Thank you for making these videos! They filled in many gaps in the memories of the most treasured games from my childhood, as well as the surrounding lore that I had always wondered about. As a long time Cyan fan, multiple-kickstarter-backer, and Traveler, it really means a lot. :)
I swear... This should be put in the bonus features of the new MYST Documentary they just kickstarted.
Wait, they did? No way! They need to hire this guy!
Amazing! You've done a wonderful job recapping it all. As someone who only ever really played Myst but read all the books, it was really great to hear how the games and the books tell a full and incredible story. Thank you for all the hard work you put into this!
Between this, the documentary and the new ages in Myst Online: Uru Live, it really is a splendid time to be a fan.
which is your fave new age?
@@TNJX The memorial age is beautiful, very evocative. But Im most excited by the potential the library age offers. Plus it reminds me of an old university building, which I dig.
These were all so cool. Thank you for making these. I look forward to the next one.
Interesting theory about the Star Fissure! My personal theory for why everything that fell into the Riven Star Fissure ended up back at the Cleft is because of the connection between the age of Riven and its Descriptive Book. Since the Riven Descriptive Book was in D'ni at the time, anything that fell into the Riven Star Fissure would be pulled back to D'ni (or as close as it could physically get, anyway.) So, following that theory, if Atrus were to take Riven's Descriptive Book over to Myst, then anything that fell into Riven's Star Fissure would end up on Myst. And of course, a Star Fissure that formed on another age would end up falling wherever _its_ Descriptive Book happened to be. But that's all based on literally nothing except my own imagination, of course, so take it or leave it.
Also, watching you recap Myst IV reminded me both of how gorgeous that game is and how dumb the story is, haha.
"I. am. Sirrus......... AND I WILL NOT BE DEFEEEAAATTTED!!!!"
Something I'd like to add to that theory: since Riven was written incorrectly and more akin to a linking rather than a descriptive book, my theory is that it works similar to one. A linking book has to be written in the age it is supposed to link to, Riven was written in the age of D'ni iirc. So it's possible that the rift is a manifestation of this contradiction, the flawed writing forcing the entire age to act as a link to D'ni.
this is fantastic work mate! you deserve way more subscribers, this is honestly one of the best lore series i've ever watched
The great reward for all your hard work on Riven was the opportunity to fall into the abyss.
I've always been fascinated by the lore of these games, but the information they give you in the games is so scant, and difficult to find. Thank you for this series
Looking forward to watching this tomorrow
EDIT: watched, brilliant and informative as always!
dude, that's awesome! I've just recently replayed all of myst series and had some questions and blank spots (honestly couldn't be arsed to read all of uru's books and journals), so these videos are very helpful. hope the next one comes out soon!)
This series is amazingly extensive and I couldn't be more entertained! I could be wrong but I thought Cyan confirmed that the stranger was Watson? Thanks for this and keep up the good work! 👍
IIRC Watson is the character that you play as in myst 5, the other 4 though you play as "the Stranger"
36:33 Actually, the link to J'nanin was gone on Narayan, Saveedro taking it with him on his trip to Tomahna the moment he took Releeshahn. This was due to him nearly being caught by Catherine last time, so he decided to take it with him when he enacted his plan, and became the book The Stranger uses to follow, and shortly burned after. This means the two were literally trapped on Narayan with no way to return to J'nanin, and given Saveedro's warning upon arriving, The Stranger realized it would be too dangerous to return to Tomahna once they found the linking book, and quickly hid it on their person to avoid Saveedro using it to harm Atrus and Catherine.
These videos are seriously amazing.. well done and thankyou for making them!
Could you please provide a source for the ravine on J'nanin with hallucinogenic fog? I was always under the impression that the fog was Saavedro's way of describing a dissociative fugue brought about by PTSD over his experiences with Sirrus & Achenar / being trapped and alone for 20 odd years...
As far as I remember, in Riven the issue with needing to power the linking books had nothing to do with Gehn's bad writing and everything to do with the composition of the books themselves being incorrect / incomplete (since Gehn was sourcing all the materials for them from Riven, as he no longer had access to the blank books he'd previously nabbed in D'ni to write Ages in), which was why Catherine needed to write the special crystal material into Tay (to make the Moiety linking books work).
My Star Fissure theory is by no means how traveling through ACTUALLY works! Just an idea I had :)
Feel free to give your own theories in the comments!
I find it really interesting and if not true at the very least plausible. Brilliant deductive work and awesome series, thanks so much for taking the time to piece all the lore together!
I like it, it's a solid theory. But then why would it only appear in Riven? (also you're still deep throating the mic, I'm so sorry but my misophonia just can't handle those really gross wet smacky sounds)
I cant stop watching these. 🍿😃
Is it Selentic? I feel like Selenitic conveys the lunar feel way better
Multiple examples have now shown conclusively that modifying an age's description book changes the actual age, rather than creating a link to yet another variant point in a multi-verse - unless, for example, Atrus' sons are in multiple versions of their prison ages.
It does seem that while Gehn was an evil person, his beliefs in the end were correct.
Bravo, I didn't know about the age of Averone
Well first of all, canonically there are no Trap Books and no one can speak through a panel because retcon.
Second, before the retcon, Sirius and Achanar did not claim that the other brother wrote the Green Book. They both claimed their father created it as another Trap Book similar to the ones they were imprisoned in.
I see Myst, I upvote
I never had the chance to play Revelation but I'm glad to know the story. Plus I can't believe how much of the story I missed from the other games. If They do make the TV show, I really hope they stick with the story. I think the story of the kings can be quickly summarized and then start with the story of Ti'ana. I'm going to have to buy the books. If I knew this story was this good, I would have read the trilogy a long time ago.
How was the stranger able to read the book?
The book that landed in the stranger's hands was a linking book, not descriptive, meaning it could have been written in any language. Since it was his first language, Atrus likely wrote most if not all of his linking books in English. Just the summary and pointers contained in a linking book still give a pretty detailed description of the age itself, enough for the stranger to be entranced by it.
@@crimocklyte4964 given the speculation about the stranger's aboriginal ethnicity, one can hardly assume they could read English. Anyway just nitpicking. Thanks for the explanation.
@@JoeArmstrongC4S I think the stranger canonically is supposed to be a player surrogate, of no particular race, gender or age, so I don't think we'll ever get a definitive description of them even if more Myst material comes out. Does make me wonder if they'll show up in any TV adaption. I think they won't, they'll be kept offscreen or not included at all.
I swear that bullshit sound puzzle which wants perfect movements on clunky controls still makes me irrationally angry thinking about it.
für so viele deutsche Spieler leider nur im Ansatz hilfreich, ich übersetze nicht gern, aber spielte gern..
