The fact that MATPAT of all people could deliver a line that could give me chills adds to the extremely long list of reasons why Megazord vs Voltron is godtier.
As if there wasn't enough to like about Shredder VS Harada's ending, here's another cool thing I learned about it from RaccoonBro's video: In the other post-fight clip, Shredder puts Harada's helmet on his sword, showing that he saw Harada as a worthy opponent, giving an already great death a touch of nuance. That ending really does do a lot for an already good episode.
Another fine ending is in Naruto vs Ichigo, where Naruto is about to eat a bowl of ramen, but a rubber arm snatch it and the owner of that arm eat the bowl, greatly pissing off Naruto. It is a cool trailer for an episode that is still to come.
Another thing to point out is how that final shot of Shredder crushing the skull was a last minute thing they added. I know they mentioned such either on a Cast or in a BTS sort of deal but it is shocking that that wasnt originally intended to be there
Balrog vs TJ is something special. One of my all time favorite animations in the shows history elevated by personal experience. It came out during a rough time in my life and It just made me so happy seeing them talk about one of my favorite fighting game characters (TJ)
For Lucario, that wasn’t Aura Storm. That was Dragon Pulse. Hence it coming from Lucario’s mouth. Though, the fact that it was vague enough to confuse the two is a problem in and of itself.
Agreed. The blue is a highlight (of pink) to Dragon Pulse whereas the blue gets a highlight for it (white) with Aura Storm. So I'm fairly certain they just got the coloration of the move wrong.
Little thing about Shovel Knight vs Scrooge that I never see anyone mention is that they used the wrong sprite for Shovel Knight’s shovel drop, instead they used a sprite from his death animation so I can’t help but imagine Shovel Knight is having a mini heart attack every-time he goes for the shovel drop
Power Rangers vs Voltron is no joke my favorite Death Battle episode ever. It has this consistence high pace adrenaline that most episodes can’t even approach in my opinion. It has such fun choreography and amazing music that helps boost that adrenaline. The climax legitimately brings me to tears every single time I watch it. It’s such an immaculate finale to a phenomenal fight, with Matpat’s everything line being one of the best deliveries in the entire show, and gives me chills every single time. This is my number one favorite episode ever, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Truly an incredible episode.
As a big fan of Uncharted, the issue with Laura vs Drake is that they portrayed Drake as ONLY being lucky. Is he lucky? Yes, I will admit he is. But chalking all his accomplishments up to that is just wrong, because most of his "lucky" moments also rely on his opportunistic nature. He doesn't just fall off a cliff and happen to land on a ledge, he falls off and has the presence of mind to try to grab on to something. When confronted at gunpoint, he can stall well while looking for a way out. He does get lucky in these situations, but it still usually requires him to act on it to make them work, which is not something most could do in a stressful situation. They also portrayed him as "stumbling" into situations and not making much of a plan, which also isn't true. He has been shown to be able to make a plan before a heist, for example. It's just that these plans almost always have to go out the window due to outside factors, because of anything from betrayal to pirates to someone hiring a personal army to try to get the very thing Drake is looking for. The death battle SHOULD have been Laura's skill and technique vs Drake's improv and tenacity, but instead we got Drake barely offering resistance and a death in which he stares at the sky before a helicopter blade impales him because "his luck ran out". And that's just Drake, I have to imagine Laura is portrayed even worse.
As someone who’s pretty into Tomb Raider, yeah, Lara was done pretty dirty here too. Sure, they display her scoping the temple out, which is in-character for most versions, but after that there’s nothing that resembles Lara Croft outside of her model. Nowhere else in this animation do we see signs of her intelligence or pragmatism. She doesn’t use her knowledge of the temple’s layout to set up impromptu traps, trick Nathan into recklessly endangering himself, or even inconvenience him at all. The section in the temple depicts her as both a hard ass with no sense of humor, and a blithering idiot. A good majority of Lara’s incarnations are more willing to make wisecracks, so it’d be more in-character for her to play off Nathan’s remarks with some of her own. She also wouldn’t be stupid enough to fire her guns anywhere near a priceless artifact unless she planned to destroy it, nor would she blame someone else for her setting off a trap. The scene where she catches up to Nathan in his Jeep is also pretty bad. Her hitting him in the head with a bow can be excused as them just wanting her to use it somewhere in the animation. But if that’s all she used the bow for, why bother bringing it in at all? Seriously, she doesn’t fire off any of the multitude of arrows she has. She just uses it to whack Nathan in the head. The climbing axe had better use in the fight, and that isn’t even one of her main weapons! I also take issue with her saying “Sorry... have to do what I have to do.” Sure, there have been some instances in the franchise where Lara’s made quirky one-liners before killing someone, but most of the time those are early in her career. When she’s more settled into being a Tomb Raider, she becomes more no-nonsense when it comes to killing. At best, she might kill someone and then make a comment about it. And when she does kill Nathan, she winds up destroying her only means of escape, meaning she has effectively screwed herself over. She’s trapped in a desert with exposed wounds and as far as we know, there aren’t any signs of civilization or her having medical equipment. So unless Lara’s close to a nearby town, has a medkit available, or has supernatural luck of her own, she’s probably going to die of blood loss or infection before anyone finds her.
It's so insane how good TJ vs Balrog is to people who don't even care about the characters. I've played Killer Instinct once but it makes TJ feel like my childhood hero. Same with the Power Rangers vs Voltron and Shredder vs Silver Samurai episodes. No real interest in any of those, but my god those three hooked me. It's nice that even in a season I'm not into, they still managed some of the best moments in the show
If you want to get hyper technical, the Death Battle T Shirt one is like 15 seconds if that but it was more a shitpost to go in line with merch so it really doesn't count

Man I remember following every episode through this season back when they first came out so I have a lot of nostalgia for a lot of these. I was also so hyped for Balrog vs TJ Combo mostly cause my username is similar to TJ Combo's name lol. So having the fight be that good made me so happy. I also remember not being that excited for Shredder vs Silver Samurai but when it came out I still watched it and oh my god it was awesome
The reason as to why the foot soldiers explode upon death in Shredder vs Silver Samurai is because some incarnations (namely 2012 and 1987) had the foot soldiers replaced by foot robots, which would often explode upon being defeated. It’s mostly a way for the 1987 shows to be lighthearted while allowing the 2012 show to be more… brutal, I guess.
Batman Beyond vs SpiderMan 2099 bugs me because there's a massive mistake in the analysis. Not incorrect information, but they mention "Remember when Terry lifted a limestone boulder underwater?"...except they NEVER MENTIONED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE! It was listed on the feats page for sure, but never actually discussed, and if it's such a key factor in giving Terry the win, they SHOULD HAVE DISCUSSED IT!
5:18 I'm reasonably certain that that's Dragon Pulse and not Aura Storm; they listed it in the analysis (and didn't list Aura Storm). The pose for Aura Storm in Smash is also different too.
Really my only big gripe with Sephiroth vs Vergil looking back was how they attributed a weaknesses to Vergil that only happened because he was literally brainwashed by Mundus. Other than that it was a great finale this season
I Fucking love fighting games so Balrog vs TJ Combo is by far one of my favorite episodes of all time. As a huge pro wrestling fan and someone who always mains a grappler I’m dying for them to recreate that magic with a wrestling episode like King vs Zangief or Tizoc

Shredder vs Silver Samurai is to this day still firmly in the top 10 for me, if not top 5 Between putting Harada's helmet on his sword as a symbol of honoring a formidable warrior to that absolutely legendary kill, this was a fight for me that still surprises me my favorite won It took until the run down for it to sink in. Like you said, the music cutting was the perfect touch. Even funnier is how that final scene was actually a last minute addition and it was stellar nonetheless
I think next season is going to be full of high highs and very 'meh' middle points. The high points are undoubtedly Ryu vs Jin and Jack vs Afro (these were back to back, by the way). Other high notes of the season include Crash vs Spyro (autism comment aside, it's fun, especially how it's like a PS1 crossover), Optimus vs Gundam (sweet animation, sweet music), Ultron vs Sigma (robot army battle to robot Kaiju battle), Roshi vs Jiraya (their tactical personalities and abilities play off well against each other), and Leon vs Frank (their character interactions were the highlight, but this really should've been the Halloween episode). The meh includes Black Panther vs Batman (forgettable), Sora vs Pit (it's fine enough, but it does have the funny Sora face), Nightwing vs Daredevil, Strange vs Fate, Jotaro vs Kenshiro (it's a little tough coming back to this episode, especially after DIO vs Alucard and Tanjiro vs Jonathan) Thanos vs Darkseid (both have nice animations, but we don't see much of anyone's abilities) and arguably Raven vs Twilight (notice how most of them include DC vs Marvel). There aren't any episodes this season that I'd call bad, just anywhere from mediocre to really good, and in the case of Ryu vs Jin and Jack vs Afro, also includes some of the best fights in the series. This season also houses the milestone episode 100. Our hosts are animated, we get mostly good gags that give us an idea of the characters's arsenals (namely Mario's gold flower and ice flower), 'So long, gay hedgehog,' an actually cool 'Let's-a go' and a powerful moon shatter with the reference to the 2016 Olympic Games cover art. Also, shout-out to the soundtrack. Therewolf and Yates really seem to have found their footing this season and gave us great tracks, namely Turtle and Toad, Wings of Iron, Chorus of Carnage, Infection Perfection, Watch Out Samurai and A Strange Fate. There may have been a few duds (namely Kings of Infinity) but the good and great vastly outweigh the not good. I'm really anticipating the review.
I find it kind of funny that when you really think about it Naruto technically didn't kill Ichigo Well not in the traditional sense , Yes he did kill his physical body but ichigo It's just going to go to soul society become a soul reaper all over again And come back for round 2 lol
I loved season 4. It had some of my personal favorites, even today. Voltron vs. Megazord was my first Death Battle and I loved seeing one of my favorite RUclipsrs voicing a character. Plus it got me into the series as a whole and lead to me finding funny channels like this one.
I'd like to think I had some influence over that number 6 transition, hehe. It's nice to know how little debate there is for the best episode of the season as well.

TJ Vs Balrog also gets points for that final uppercut feeling like it hits with the fucking might of *GOD,* I honestly can't name a single other uppercut in animation that feels like it hits that damn hard.

16. Venom vs Bane is one of the worst Death Battle episodes of all time, and that includes season 1. Venom's analysis was pretty generic, but not that bad, and Bane's was actually pretty good. But the fight is absolutely horrible and the fact that it used to be my favorite sprite Death Battle of all time is somehow the worst versus take I've ever had. I genuinely have no idea what I saw in this to be honest. Almost everything about this fight is terrible. The camera is going batshit insane anytime they start fighting and its almost impossible to even tell what's going on. The action itself is pretty weak even without the dim lighting and constant motion blur and the animation constantly cutting to random shots like Bane's green water just makes it even more of a nightmare to watch. The only good thing about this fight is the death, other than that, this animation is awful and I hated it. Easily the worst comic book fight in the series. 2.5/10 15. Sub-Zero vs Glacius is one of the most boring episodes in the series. I enjoyed Glacius's analysis, but the fight just has nothing going on. Even back in 2017 when it first came out I was disappointed and I thought "Wow I waited 3 weeks for this!? Time to watch some Cartoon Fight Club!!!!" The fight isn't awful, but it's the Beast vs Goliath of this season with how barebones and bland it is. This episode gives me almost nothing to talk about. 4/10 14. Nathan Drake vs Lara Croft is the Death Battle equivalent to eating a plain piece of white bread with nothing on it. The analysis was actually pretty good in my opinion, but the animation is so boring! Honestly even more mid than Tracer vs Scout. The fight is just absolutely forgettable and hardly anything of interest happens throughout the whole thing. The backgrounds at the start of the fight looked really bad and the fight has so many dumb moments like Lara somehow catching up to Nathan after she fell down a pit and Nathan was already driving away, and the chalice somehow teleporting off of Lara and Nathan somehow teleporting into a helicopter. The hand-to-hand combat is fine but its pretty much whitenoise and overall this is easily the most mediocre season premiere Death Battle has ever done. 5/10 13. Lucario vs Renamon is yet another painfully average episode in this season. The Renamon fetish art was one of the worst jokes in the whole series and the animation itself is yet another Beast vs Goliath. Its fine, the action is decently fast paced and the fight is fairly watchable. But it's just so basic and uninteresting aside from the death. 5/10 12. Batman Beyond vs Spider-Man 2099 is somewhat decent I guess. The fact that I gave this episode an 8/10 and placed it above so many other really good episodes this season is genuinely insulting, especially since I was only judging it on the fight back then. The analysis was actually really good surprisingly and I really enjoyed learning about both of these characters, but the fight is literally Beast vs Goliath but instead of a Gargoyles character its a DC character. Visually the fight looks pretty great and the little action that happens is solid, but its short and over before you even know it. This episode probably would've been a 4 or 5, but because of how much I enjoyed the analysis, I'll be nice and give it the lowest 6/10 I've probably ever given aside from a season 1 Ben Singer fight. 11. Natsu vs Ace definitely happened, but it wasn't bad. The analysis and fight were pretty alright but nothing too crazy. The animation is pretty short and not much happens, but there's still some great moments that can at least make me like it. The shot of them fighting as silhouettes was great and the death is phenomenal. I don't have much to say about this, but at least it aged better than some of these others. 6/10 10. Android 18 vs Captain Marvel is okay, but it really disappointed me on a rewatch. I remember this being one of my favorite sprite battles back in the day and rewatching it somewhat recently, I loved it a lot. But really this is about as generic as a capeshit matchup can get. The analysis is pretty lame and the fight is good, but nothing too crazy. The action is solid but it's very generic and not nearly as fun as I remember it being. Overall a pretty basic episode, but I still thought it was fine and I have a bit of nostalgia for it. 6/10 9. Metal Sonic vs Zero isn't great, but I still have a bit of a soft spot for it. The animation has some really dumb stuff like the goofy sound effects and the constant spamming of those weird 3D shots. But the action itself is honestly kinda great and compared to all 7 of the episodes before it, it has way more going on. The animation is really fast paced, the choreography is solid, and the death is quite good as well. This may be half out of pity for this season, but I'd give this episode a pretty low 7/10. 8. Shovel Knight vs Scrooge McDuck is genuinely really solid! I don't think it's quite as amazing as others, but I still enjoyed it all throughout. The fight isn't anything super crazy until the ending, but its still got a really nice aesthetic and the action is pretty fun even if its a bit repetitive. Overall this episode doesn't have much to say about it, but its still a solid 7/10.
7. Smokey Bear vs McGruff the Crime Dog holds up surprisingly really well! The analysis was great, unique, and honestly one of my favorites of the whole season. The fight itself is pretty alright, but what actually happens is nothing that crazy. It's still entertaining, but what really stands out about it is the introduction of hand-drawn episodes. This animation style was so cool to see and it lead to us getting so many great episodes like the legendary Samurai Jack vs Afro Samurai. Overall this episode isn't amazing, but I still really like it overall. 7.5/10 6. Thor vs Wonder Woman is one of the most underrated episodes in the series. Compared to so many other episodes that aged like milk, I was shocked by how much I enjoyed this. The analysis was really enjoyable and the fight honestly gets way too much hate. Visually it's not the greatest and I get that a lot of people don't care for it because of that, but I feel like people are a bit too harsh on the fight especially since those same people say that season 1 is good. In terms of what actually happens, its fucking great! The choreography isn't some of Torrian's best, but its still a really solid showing from the greatest animator that Death Battle has ever hired. Compared to Wonder Woman vs She-Ra, this fight has so much more going with them fighting inside a tornado and then blowing up the moon! The fight is just super entertaining all throughout and I really don't get why people say its mid. My only big problem is the death which has some Venom vs Bane tier editing. Other than that this episode is a low, but still solid 8/10. 5. Naruto vs Ichigo was absolutely done dirty in my old ranking and the fact that I placed it lower than Batman Beyond vs Spider-Man 2099 is embarrassing. The analysis is fantastic and one of the most in depth in the whole series. It really makes this episode feel like a big event, along with the awesome fight scene. I wish it could've been a bit longer to match the analysis, but its still great for what it is. To get my other problems out of the way, it's kind of hard to telling what's going on because of the high color saturation and the constant flashing lights and strange camerawork. But the animation still looks amazing and it has such insane amounts of energy that I can't help but love it. The death especially goes hard aside from Naruto pulling a Po at the end. Overall this episode is one of the few this season that was better than I remember, it's not as good as Madara vs Aizen (Don't kill me JC), but its still a really solid 8/10. 4. Sephiroth vs Vergil isn't one of my favorite finales, but its still a fantastic episode with a solid analysis and an amazing animation. Torrian once again did a great job, the choreography is absolutely on point, and the sound design is great unlike a certain other finale! The death is great as well. My only major problem with this fight is the lackluster conclusion where they say that destroying a metal door is as strong as 20 Hiroshima bombs, but overall I loved this episode so damn much! 9/10 3. Shredder vs Silver Samurai is not worse than Android 18 vs Captain Marvel you literal Michelangelo! This episode is truly amazing. The analysis is super solid all throughout and the animation is easily the best sprite fight of the season. I loved the gimmick of these two only needing one hit in order to kill each other and it really helped keep you on the edge of your seat wondering who was gonna win. The action itself is super fast paced all throughout and has some of the highest amounts of energy in any sprite battle. Especially that one scene before the Super Shredder transformation where they keep dodging each other's attacks, that was stellar! Speaking of Super Shredder, he gets a pretty solid combo on Silver Samurai and then we get an awesome scene of Silver Samurai deflecting a lightning bolt. Then the animation somehow goes even harder in the amazing death scene. Easily my favorite death in any sprite battle aside from Goku Black vs Reverse Flash. Overall this episode aged incredibly and is an absolute standout of this season. 9/10 2. Power Rangers vs Voltron is a masterpiece and its been one of my top 10 favorites ever since it came out. The animation looks beautiful aside from the ugly human models, and speaking of the human models, my only major problem with the fight is how much it jarringly cuts to them getting shaken up inside the mechs during the fight. It's pretty distracting in the moment, but then the fight continues going absolutely hard and I forget about it. The action is absolutely incredible and unlike the previous kaiju fights in the series, it doesn't feel slow at all and has some of the greatest action in any episode. The ending is also absolutely stellar and the amazing track helps it go as hard as possible along with how they somehow made MatPat sound badass. I don't like the first half of season 4 at all, but this episode was an absolute standout in every single way. 10/10! 1. Balrog vs T.J. Combo is Torrian's greatest episode aside from the legendary Hulk vs Doomsday. The analysis is great, but what really makes this episode one of my top 5 favorites is the godlike fight scene. The choreography is amazing all throughout and after the referee gets knocked out, the fight goes absolutely hard! The music choice was absolutely flawless and for the last episode to use a non custom track, it was a great one to end on. The best part of this episode though, is the ending. T.J. Combo gets an Endosym Ironman tier comeback, one of the most high octane beatdowns in the series, and then an amazing death with a fun shot of Balrog's head breaking the camera. Overall this is about as good as Death Battle episodes can get. 10/10!

My Personal Best & Worst Of The Season WORST: Beyond Vs 2099. Two of my favorite alt versions of my two favorite comic book characters come together for cataclysmic disappointment. Far from the worst of the series, but on sheer wasted potential alone it's the weakest of the season BEST: Scrooge Vs Shovel Knight. Such a fun fight and man that final death is brutal in the best of ways! Honorable Mention: Naruto Vs Ichigo. Very well done, but man I wish Ichigo got to win for once.
Honestly, Shredder vs Silver Samurai was fantastic. It fast but strong, much like both characters. Rewatching it makes me BEG for TMNT to come back with a Non-Leo returner (Old Man Logan vs Last Ronin or Splinter vs Shifu please!)
It’s depicted as a club in the fight as well. It didn’t go through because it was sharp, it went through because there was that much force behind the final attack.

Not really unrealistic, things don’t need to be sharp to be able to pierce things, and since they didn’t use a specific Lucario there’s not much of a character there to mess up to begin with
I remember hating Scrooge vs Shovel Knight when it came out, not even sure why, and now I fell kind of bad about they not using any indie game characters since then Anyway, what are your thoughts on the matches that got picked for the Champions Pool?
I'm honestly surprised no body talks about the rest of the voice cast in Power Rangers VS Voltron. I mean there was Alejandro Saab (Kaggy Films), Space Hamster, and Peanut Butter Gamer just to name a few sure they didn't say much compared to MatPat, but I remember being shocked at the these casting roles when the episode dropped especially with Jeff and Austin (Space Hamster and Peanut Butter Gamer respectively) as they are some of my favorite youtubers.
I mean they were good and I did grow up watching some of their content, but the vast majority of them have so few lines that they leave zero impression
Once again I feel like Season 4 is just an example of the question of if you'd rather have a season where half are bangers but the other half is nearly unwatchable, or if you just want a season that remains in a painfully middle ranking. I dunno, anyways you know the drill here is my list I guess: 16: I could easily just say Sub-Zero VS Glacius is just the usual bland episode, but for how much I wanted this episode to happen I was absolutely disappointed. I can even say that this is one of the most disappointing episodes for me, there's just nothing that I can say I really enjoyed besides the analysis, but even then it wasn't particularly amazing. I won't go into the results but yeah they missed a LOT of things regarding Glacius, so yeah. This one was an ouchie for me. 15: At least Venom VS Bane had things I could talk about....still this was some terrible filler. Not as bad as Batman VS Black Panther (oh we will get to that once your Season 5 ranking is out), but there are so many confusing things in the script. Like some of the shots did not need to be there or felt absolutely incomplete. At least the death was good....that's all I got. 14: Lucario VS Renamon used to be a 5/10 for me, but that disgusting decision of including NSFW Renamon art is enough for me to give it a 4/10, how the fuck did I not remember that? Fight was also another example of just...existing. episode kinda bad. 13: Lara VS Nathan still has some of the worst dialogue and writing in any episode, my opinions haven't changed on that. Okay it's not the absolute bottom of the barrel, but as someone who actually knows these characters I was pretty unhappy. Nathan was...fine, but still disappointing considering the character. But my god Lara was such a fucking idiot, she shoot the cup but then calls Nathan a dumb fucking cretin and a dumb fucking fool, she lets Nathan pull out an AK, and don't get me started on that awful Jeep scene. Also why was the whole helicopter escape even a thing??? My god I continue to get frustrated over this episode, however I will say the death isn't disrespectful to Nathan. You could just say that his luck ran out or idk....irony??? 12: Beyond Batman Burger VS In 2077 Spiderman definitely happened weeeeeeeee, that death still confuses me. I will note that I friggin' love Beyond 2099, is it underrated? I don't really see anyone talk about it so sure. 11: Remind me why Android 18 VS Captain Marvel happened again? Overall the episode just...exists for me, it's a whatever 6/10 but still. Action was fine enough but there are also a lot of things holding it back. I still find it hilarious how Captain Marvel has had like 2 Ls in this show despite Marvel wanking her so much like lmao- 10: The sound design in Zero VS Metal Sonic continues to horrify me, like what even happened??? Much as I want to say this episode is good there are so many parts where I can't tell what's going on. The 3D shots are....inventive but not needed. I mean I dunno I still think this one was alright but it's aged horribly. 9: I feel like the reason why people used to say Natsu VS Ace was so forgettable was because the outcome was obvious. But hey, there's a lot of good stuff even if a lot of things still aren't working for me. The scene where their shadows are fighting in the fire (I don't know how to describe it) is good stuff and yeah, the hand drawn death manages to beat out some of the hand drawn moments in modern death battle. That says a lot. 8: Thor VS Wonder Woman is....something I'm mixed on. I still think it's good enough but ouch it has not aged well. I mean yeah it's serious business when the animation breaks Torrian's computer, but it doesn't change the fact that it's still not visually amazing. Voice actors did great, but some moments don't work for me like Thor going berserk since he sounded really dumb at times. The death is also bad in almost every aspect....so normally this would be enough for the episode to really drop in the rankings, but I still enjoyed it enough. I dunno, there were just a lot of cool moments, still really sad that this is Wonder Woman's best episode. Thor already got his redemption arc, but in all seriousness PLEASE do not bring WW back for a fourth fucking time. 7: Nowadays Smoky VS McGruff isn't nearly as impressive, but I cannot deny how much of a milestone it was for being the first truly hand-drawn episode. And just in general it's a surprisingly good time, analysis was unique and interesting and the animation, while again, not as impressive today, is still pretty decent. There are flaws, yes. McGruff is...really out of character at the start, which unfortunately kind of hurts the death a bit, and the choreography has very little going on. But at the time I was still really enjoying myself watching the episode. Kind of interesting how this match-up was a shitstomp- 6: I really like Scrooge VS Shovel Knight...sadly it's dropped a bit for me. While the unique style and animation are fun some parts are....eh. It feels like Scrooge didn't get to do much even if the way he killed SK left a huge impact, also Shovel Knight is kinda out of character at the beginning. At this point though those are sort of nitpicks, this was still a pretty enjoyable episode for me. 5: I don't know why 14 year old me got so weirded out with the conclusion for Naruto VS Ichigo conclusion, not that I disagreed with it...I think younger me just disliked some of the stupidly overpowered feats both characters had. But honestly....is that anything new? I loved the analysis and the animation, while it felt kinda oversaturated or I didn't get what was going on at certain points, it was quite the adrenaline pumper. The trade-offs between abilities were pretty good, as I said the action was really fast and the climax was great. 4: Sephiroth VS Vergil is still a pretty excellent episode for me, the animation was way better than I remember. The action is really solid and the ending was surprisingly shocking to me, I thought Vergil was going to win purely because he won the One Minute Melee episode...young me was so naive. Though there are flaws, like Wall Level Vergil.....I have never seen more of an utter curveball than that, also Vergil do be kinda w i d e in the animation. One Winged Devil is also pretty great, not finale material but it's good stuff. 3: Holy heck Silver Samurai VS Shredder goes off hard, while it was short it doesn't feel like a single second is wasted. It really depicts the idea that both contestants only need a single good hit....and then Super Shredder happens. Similar to the analysis, you kind of get the idea that Super Shredder beats the shit out of SS, and the animation depicts it perfectly. He is large, imposing and absolutely terrifying. The final shot seals the idea that Super Shredder is an unstoppable horror to Silver Samurai, and the death does not disappointing.....I had a lot to say about this hm. Shredding Silver is also a banger track, please please please listen to it if you haven't...though the version used in the episode isn't available. 2: Power Rangers VS Voltron, against all odds, manages to only be the second best episode of the season. Wow. Analysis was pretty good, but the animation is excellent stuff. It really feels like an episode out of either franchise with all of the dialogue, action, etc. MatPat doesn't bother me too much, the only thing is that he just sounds like himself, so now I think MatPat is piloting Voltron, not the actual character. Still, this is overall a consistently excellent episode with an especially amazing death that highlights the best of the voice acting, animation, and writing team. 1: Yeah Balrog VS TJ Combo is still one of my all-time favorite episodes, just about everything in it comes together for me. The only issues I can point out is that Balrog's cape clips through his model that one time....and his arm breaking looks weird. That's it. Everything here is great to pitch perfect, the analysis is really interesting and managed to make me more interested in sports than, welp, actual sports TV. It's also amazing just how close this fight was, at that point it ultimately just came down to their skills and abilities, I absolutely love match-ups like that. And the animation truly feels immersive, I mean yeah TJ's theme is pretty much blasting through out the entire thing but stillllll. The action is well choreographed and TJ's comeback is one of the best in the show and just adds to the immersion. Overall it's definitely no surprise to me that this is one of my favorites and it's probably going to stay that way. i do agree that Season 4 is definitely one of the weakest seasons of the show but honestly I'm glad that we managed to still get a few bangers...ok bye-

Naruto vs ichigo had a buncha wasted potential. They did the same sin the anime/manga did with ichigo mugetsu and had ichigo blow it in 1 attack dispite being able to fight in the form indefinitely. Having both characters fight in their final forms instead of just blowing through transformations like it's dbz is so annoying.
The fact that MATPAT of all people could deliver a line that could give me chills adds to the extremely long list of reasons why Megazord vs Voltron is godtier.

As if there wasn't enough to like about Shredder VS Harada's ending, here's another cool thing I learned about it from RaccoonBro's video: In the other post-fight clip, Shredder puts Harada's helmet on his sword, showing that he saw Harada as a worthy opponent, giving an already great death a touch of nuance. That ending really does do a lot for an already good episode.

Another fine ending is in Naruto vs Ichigo, where Naruto is about to eat a bowl of ramen, but a rubber arm snatch it and the owner of that arm eat the bowl, greatly pissing off Naruto. It is a cool trailer for an episode that is still to come.

Another thing to point out is how that final shot of Shredder crushing the skull was a last minute thing they added. I know they mentioned such either on a Cast or in a BTS sort of deal but it is shocking that that wasnt originally intended to be there
Balrog vs TJ is something special. One of my all time favorite animations in the shows history elevated by personal experience. It came out during a rough time in my life and It just made me so happy seeing them talk about one of my favorite fighting game characters (TJ)

Agreed. The blue is a highlight (of pink) to Dragon Pulse whereas the blue gets a highlight for it (white) with Aura Storm. So I'm fairly certain they just got the coloration of the move wrong.
Little thing about Shovel Knight vs Scrooge that I never see anyone mention is that they used the wrong sprite for Shovel Knight’s shovel drop, instead they used a sprite from his death animation so I can’t help but imagine Shovel Knight is having a mini heart attack every-time he goes for the shovel drop

Power Rangers vs Voltron is no joke my favorite Death Battle episode ever. It has this consistence high pace adrenaline that most episodes can’t even approach in my opinion. It has such fun choreography and amazing music that helps boost that adrenaline. The climax legitimately brings me to tears every single time I watch it. It’s such an immaculate finale to a phenomenal fight, with Matpat’s everything line being one of the best deliveries in the entire show, and gives me chills every single time. This is my number one favorite episode ever, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Truly an incredible episode.

As a big fan of Uncharted, the issue with Laura vs Drake is that they portrayed Drake as ONLY being lucky. Is he lucky? Yes, I will admit he is. But chalking all his accomplishments up to that is just wrong, because most of his "lucky" moments also rely on his opportunistic nature. He doesn't just fall off a cliff and happen to land on a ledge, he falls off and has the presence of mind to try to grab on to something. When confronted at gunpoint, he can stall well while looking for a way out. He does get lucky in these situations, but it still usually requires him to act on it to make them work, which is not something most could do in a stressful situation. They also portrayed him as "stumbling" into situations and not making much of a plan, which also isn't true. He has been shown to be able to make a plan before a heist, for example. It's just that these plans almost always have to go out the window due to outside factors, because of anything from betrayal to pirates to someone hiring a personal army to try to get the very thing Drake is looking for. The death battle SHOULD have been Laura's skill and technique vs Drake's improv and tenacity, but instead we got Drake barely offering resistance and a death in which he stares at the sky before a helicopter blade impales him because "his luck ran out". And that's just Drake, I have to imagine Laura is portrayed even worse.
As someone who’s pretty into Tomb Raider, yeah, Lara was done pretty dirty here too. Sure, they display her scoping the temple out, which is in-character for most versions, but after that there’s nothing that resembles Lara Croft outside of her model. Nowhere else in this animation do we see signs of her intelligence or pragmatism. She doesn’t use her knowledge of the temple’s layout to set up impromptu traps, trick Nathan into recklessly endangering himself, or even inconvenience him at all.
The section in the temple depicts her as both a hard ass with no sense of humor, and a blithering idiot. A good majority of Lara’s incarnations are more willing to make wisecracks, so it’d be more in-character for her to play off Nathan’s remarks with some of her own. She also wouldn’t be stupid enough to fire her guns anywhere near a priceless artifact unless she planned to destroy it, nor would she blame someone else for her setting off a trap.
The scene where she catches up to Nathan in his Jeep is also pretty bad. Her hitting him in the head with a bow can be excused as them just wanting her to use it somewhere in the animation. But if that’s all she used the bow for, why bother bringing it in at all? Seriously, she doesn’t fire off any of the multitude of arrows she has. She just uses it to whack Nathan in the head. The climbing axe had better use in the fight, and that isn’t even one of her main weapons!
I also take issue with her saying “Sorry... have to do what I have to do.” Sure, there have been some instances in the franchise where Lara’s made quirky one-liners before killing someone, but most of the time those are early in her career. When she’s more settled into being a Tomb Raider, she becomes more no-nonsense when it comes to killing. At best, she might kill someone and then make a comment about it.
And when she does kill Nathan, she winds up destroying her only means of escape, meaning she has effectively screwed herself over. She’s trapped in a desert with exposed wounds and as far as we know, there aren’t any signs of civilization or her having medical equipment. So unless Lara’s close to a nearby town, has a medkit available, or has supernatural luck of her own, she’s probably going to die of blood loss or infection before anyone finds her.
It's so insane how good TJ vs Balrog is to people who don't even care about the characters. I've played Killer Instinct once but it makes TJ feel like my childhood hero. Same with the Power Rangers vs Voltron and Shredder vs Silver Samurai episodes. No real interest in any of those, but my god those three hooked me.
It's nice that even in a season I'm not into, they still managed some of the best moments in the show

The reason as to why the foot soldiers explode upon death in Shredder vs Silver Samurai is because some incarnations (namely 2012 and 1987) had the foot soldiers replaced by foot robots, which would often explode upon being defeated. It’s mostly a way for the 1987 shows to be lighthearted while allowing the 2012 show to be more… brutal, I guess.

It was listed on the feats page for sure, but never actually discussed, and if it's such a key factor in giving Terry the win, they SHOULD HAVE DISCUSSED IT!

Really my only big gripe with Sephiroth vs Vergil looking back was how they attributed a weaknesses to Vergil that only happened because he was literally brainwashed by Mundus. Other than that it was a great finale this season
I Fucking love fighting games so Balrog vs TJ Combo is by far one of my favorite episodes of all time. As a huge pro wrestling fan and someone who always mains a grappler I’m dying for them to recreate that magic with a wrestling episode like King vs Zangief or Tizoc

It took until the run down for it to sink in. Like you said, the music cutting was the perfect touch. Even funnier is how that final scene was actually a last minute addition and it was stellar nonetheless
I think next season is going to be full of high highs and very 'meh' middle points. The high points are undoubtedly Ryu vs Jin and Jack vs Afro (these were back to back, by the way). Other high notes of the season include Crash vs Spyro (autism comment aside, it's fun, especially how it's like a PS1 crossover), Optimus vs Gundam (sweet animation, sweet music), Ultron vs Sigma (robot army battle to robot Kaiju battle), Roshi vs Jiraya (their tactical personalities and abilities play off well against each other), and Leon vs Frank (their character interactions were the highlight, but this really should've been the Halloween episode). The meh includes Black Panther vs Batman (forgettable), Sora vs Pit (it's fine enough, but it does have the funny Sora face), Nightwing vs Daredevil, Strange vs Fate, Jotaro vs Kenshiro (it's a little tough coming back to this episode, especially after DIO vs Alucard and Tanjiro vs Jonathan) Thanos vs Darkseid (both have nice animations, but we don't see much of anyone's abilities) and arguably Raven vs Twilight (notice how most of them include DC vs Marvel). There aren't any episodes this season that I'd call bad, just anywhere from mediocre to really good, and in the case of Ryu vs Jin and Jack vs Afro, also includes some of the best fights in the series.
This season also houses the milestone episode 100. Our hosts are animated, we get mostly good gags that give us an idea of the characters's arsenals (namely Mario's gold flower and ice flower), 'So long, gay hedgehog,' an actually cool 'Let's-a go' and a powerful moon shatter with the reference to the 2016 Olympic Games cover art.
Also, shout-out to the soundtrack. Therewolf and Yates really seem to have found their footing this season and gave us great tracks, namely Turtle and Toad, Wings of Iron, Chorus of Carnage, Infection Perfection, Watch Out Samurai and A Strange Fate. There may have been a few duds (namely Kings of Infinity) but the good and great vastly outweigh the not good. I'm really anticipating the review.
I find it kind of funny that when you really think about it Naruto technically didn't kill Ichigo Well not in the traditional sense , Yes he did kill his physical body but ichigo It's just going to go to soul society become a soul reaper all over again And come back for round 2 lol

I loved season 4. It had some of my personal favorites, even today. Voltron vs. Megazord was my first Death Battle and I loved seeing one of my favorite RUclipsrs voicing a character. Plus it got me into the series as a whole and lead to me finding funny channels like this one.
I'd like to think I had some influence over that number 6 transition, hehe. It's nice to know how little debate there is for the best episode of the season as well.
I remember being really excited for Venom vs Bane when it was announced since it was one of my most wanted matchups and now I don’t even remember it most of the time

I remember back in the day I watched Sub-Zero vs Glacius on the bus ride home from school and it used my favorite Mortal Kombat character that was neat
TJ Vs Balrog also gets points for that final uppercut feeling like it hits with the fucking might of *GOD,* I honestly can't name a single other uppercut in animation that feels like it hits that damn hard.

16. Venom vs Bane is one of the worst Death Battle episodes of all time, and that includes season 1. Venom's analysis was pretty generic, but not that bad, and Bane's was actually pretty good. But the fight is absolutely horrible and the fact that it used to be my favorite sprite Death Battle of all time is somehow the worst versus take I've ever had. I genuinely have no idea what I saw in this to be honest. Almost everything about this fight is terrible. The camera is going batshit insane anytime they start fighting and its almost impossible to even tell what's going on. The action itself is pretty weak even without the dim lighting and constant motion blur and the animation constantly cutting to random shots like Bane's green water just makes it even more of a nightmare to watch. The only good thing about this fight is the death, other than that, this animation is awful and I hated it. Easily the worst comic book fight in the series. 2.5/10
15. Sub-Zero vs Glacius is one of the most boring episodes in the series. I enjoyed Glacius's analysis, but the fight just has nothing going on. Even back in 2017 when it first came out I was disappointed and I thought "Wow I waited 3 weeks for this!? Time to watch some Cartoon Fight Club!!!!" The fight isn't awful, but it's the Beast vs Goliath of this season with how barebones and bland it is. This episode gives me almost nothing to talk about. 4/10
14. Nathan Drake vs Lara Croft is the Death Battle equivalent to eating a plain piece of white bread with nothing on it. The analysis was actually pretty good in my opinion, but the animation is so boring! Honestly even more mid than Tracer vs Scout. The fight is just absolutely forgettable and hardly anything of interest happens throughout the whole thing. The backgrounds at the start of the fight looked really bad and the fight has so many dumb moments like Lara somehow catching up to Nathan after she fell down a pit and Nathan was already driving away, and the chalice somehow teleporting off of Lara and Nathan somehow teleporting into a helicopter. The hand-to-hand combat is fine but its pretty much whitenoise and overall this is easily the most mediocre season premiere Death Battle has ever done. 5/10
13. Lucario vs Renamon is yet another painfully average episode in this season. The Renamon fetish art was one of the worst jokes in the whole series and the animation itself is yet another Beast vs Goliath. Its fine, the action is decently fast paced and the fight is fairly watchable. But it's just so basic and uninteresting aside from the death. 5/10
12. Batman Beyond vs Spider-Man 2099 is somewhat decent I guess. The fact that I gave this episode an 8/10 and placed it above so many other really good episodes this season is genuinely insulting, especially since I was only judging it on the fight back then. The analysis was actually really good surprisingly and I really enjoyed learning about both of these characters, but the fight is literally Beast vs Goliath but instead of a Gargoyles character its a DC character. Visually the fight looks pretty great and the little action that happens is solid, but its short and over before you even know it. This episode probably would've been a 4 or 5, but because of how much I enjoyed the analysis, I'll be nice and give it the lowest 6/10 I've probably ever given aside from a season 1 Ben Singer fight.
11. Natsu vs Ace definitely happened, but it wasn't bad. The analysis and fight were pretty alright but nothing too crazy. The animation is pretty short and not much happens, but there's still some great moments that can at least make me like it. The shot of them fighting as silhouettes was great and the death is phenomenal. I don't have much to say about this, but at least it aged better than some of these others. 6/10
10. Android 18 vs Captain Marvel is okay, but it really disappointed me on a rewatch. I remember this being one of my favorite sprite battles back in the day and rewatching it somewhat recently, I loved it a lot. But really this is about as generic as a capeshit matchup can get. The analysis is pretty lame and the fight is good, but nothing too crazy. The action is solid but it's very generic and not nearly as fun as I remember it being. Overall a pretty basic episode, but I still thought it was fine and I have a bit of nostalgia for it. 6/10
9. Metal Sonic vs Zero isn't great, but I still have a bit of a soft spot for it. The animation has some really dumb stuff like the goofy sound effects and the constant spamming of those weird 3D shots. But the action itself is honestly kinda great and compared to all 7 of the episodes before it, it has way more going on. The animation is really fast paced, the choreography is solid, and the death is quite good as well. This may be half out of pity for this season, but I'd give this episode a pretty low 7/10.
8. Shovel Knight vs Scrooge McDuck is genuinely really solid! I don't think it's quite as amazing as others, but I still enjoyed it all throughout. The fight isn't anything super crazy until the ending, but its still got a really nice aesthetic and the action is pretty fun even if its a bit repetitive. Overall this episode doesn't have much to say about it, but its still a solid 7/10.
7. Smokey Bear vs McGruff the Crime Dog holds up surprisingly really well! The analysis was great, unique, and honestly one of my favorites of the whole season. The fight itself is pretty alright, but what actually happens is nothing that crazy. It's still entertaining, but what really stands out about it is the introduction of hand-drawn episodes. This animation style was so cool to see and it lead to us getting so many great episodes like the legendary Samurai Jack vs Afro Samurai. Overall this episode isn't amazing, but I still really like it overall. 7.5/10
6. Thor vs Wonder Woman is one of the most underrated episodes in the series. Compared to so many other episodes that aged like milk, I was shocked by how much I enjoyed this. The analysis was really enjoyable and the fight honestly gets way too much hate. Visually it's not the greatest and I get that a lot of people don't care for it because of that, but I feel like people are a bit too harsh on the fight especially since those same people say that season 1 is good. In terms of what actually happens, its fucking great! The choreography isn't some of Torrian's best, but its still a really solid showing from the greatest animator that Death Battle has ever hired. Compared to Wonder Woman vs She-Ra, this fight has so much more going with them fighting inside a tornado and then blowing up the moon! The fight is just super entertaining all throughout and I really don't get why people say its mid. My only big problem is the death which has some Venom vs Bane tier editing. Other than that this episode is a low, but still solid 8/10.
5. Naruto vs Ichigo was absolutely done dirty in my old ranking and the fact that I placed it lower than Batman Beyond vs Spider-Man 2099 is embarrassing. The analysis is fantastic and one of the most in depth in the whole series. It really makes this episode feel like a big event, along with the awesome fight scene. I wish it could've been a bit longer to match the analysis, but its still great for what it is. To get my other problems out of the way, it's kind of hard to telling what's going on because of the high color saturation and the constant flashing lights and strange camerawork. But the animation still looks amazing and it has such insane amounts of energy that I can't help but love it. The death especially goes hard aside from Naruto pulling a Po at the end. Overall this episode is one of the few this season that was better than I remember, it's not as good as Madara vs Aizen (Don't kill me JC), but its still a really solid 8/10.
4. Sephiroth vs Vergil isn't one of my favorite finales, but its still a fantastic episode with a solid analysis and an amazing animation. Torrian once again did a great job, the choreography is absolutely on point, and the sound design is great unlike a certain other finale! The death is great as well. My only major problem with this fight is the lackluster conclusion where they say that destroying a metal door is as strong as 20 Hiroshima bombs, but overall I loved this episode so damn much! 9/10
3. Shredder vs Silver Samurai is not worse than Android 18 vs Captain Marvel you literal Michelangelo! This episode is truly amazing. The analysis is super solid all throughout and the animation is easily the best sprite fight of the season. I loved the gimmick of these two only needing one hit in order to kill each other and it really helped keep you on the edge of your seat wondering who was gonna win. The action itself is super fast paced all throughout and has some of the highest amounts of energy in any sprite battle. Especially that one scene before the Super Shredder transformation where they keep dodging each other's attacks, that was stellar! Speaking of Super Shredder, he gets a pretty solid combo on Silver Samurai and then we get an awesome scene of Silver Samurai deflecting a lightning bolt. Then the animation somehow goes even harder in the amazing death scene. Easily my favorite death in any sprite battle aside from Goku Black vs Reverse Flash. Overall this episode aged incredibly and is an absolute standout of this season. 9/10
2. Power Rangers vs Voltron is a masterpiece and its been one of my top 10 favorites ever since it came out. The animation looks beautiful aside from the ugly human models, and speaking of the human models, my only major problem with the fight is how much it jarringly cuts to them getting shaken up inside the mechs during the fight. It's pretty distracting in the moment, but then the fight continues going absolutely hard and I forget about it. The action is absolutely incredible and unlike the previous kaiju fights in the series, it doesn't feel slow at all and has some of the greatest action in any episode. The ending is also absolutely stellar and the amazing track helps it go as hard as possible along with how they somehow made MatPat sound badass. I don't like the first half of season 4 at all, but this episode was an absolute standout in every single way. 10/10!
1. Balrog vs T.J. Combo is Torrian's greatest episode aside from the legendary Hulk vs Doomsday. The analysis is great, but what really makes this episode one of my top 5 favorites is the godlike fight scene. The choreography is amazing all throughout and after the referee gets knocked out, the fight goes absolutely hard! The music choice was absolutely flawless and for the last episode to use a non custom track, it was a great one to end on. The best part of this episode though, is the ending. T.J. Combo gets an Endosym Ironman tier comeback, one of the most high octane beatdowns in the series, and then an amazing death with a fun shot of Balrog's head breaking the camera. Overall this is about as good as Death Battle episodes can get. 10/10!
Megazord vs Voltron being as good as it was makes the fact that it was pushed back from being Season 3's finale feel worth it.

My Personal Best & Worst Of The Season
WORST: Beyond Vs 2099. Two of my favorite alt versions of my two favorite comic book characters come together for cataclysmic disappointment. Far from the worst of the series, but on sheer wasted potential alone it's the weakest of the season
BEST: Scrooge Vs Shovel Knight. Such a fun fight and man that final death is brutal in the best of ways!
Honorable Mention: Naruto Vs Ichigo. Very well done, but man I wish Ichigo got to win for once.
Honestly, Shredder vs Silver Samurai was fantastic. It fast but strong, much like both characters. Rewatching it makes me BEG for TMNT to come back with a Non-Leo returner (Old Man Logan vs Last Ronin or Splinter vs Shifu please!)
Voltron vs megazord makes me hyped for some more mecha fights like mazinger Z vs Getter Robo and Unit 01 vs Wing gundam

I'm honestly surprised no body talks about the rest of the voice cast in Power Rangers VS Voltron. I mean there was Alejandro Saab (Kaggy Films), Space Hamster, and Peanut Butter Gamer just to name a few sure they didn't say much compared to MatPat, but I remember being shocked at the these casting roles when the episode dropped especially with Jeff and Austin (Space Hamster and Peanut Butter Gamer respectively) as they are some of my favorite youtubers.
I mean they were good and I did grow up watching some of their content, but the vast majority of them have so few lines that they leave zero impression

Once again I feel like Season 4 is just an example of the question of if you'd rather have a season where half are bangers but the other half is nearly unwatchable, or if you just want a season that remains in a painfully middle ranking. I dunno, anyways you know the drill here is my list I guess:
16: I could easily just say Sub-Zero VS Glacius is just the usual bland episode, but for how much I wanted this episode to happen I was absolutely disappointed. I can even say that this is one of the most disappointing episodes for me, there's just nothing that I can say I really enjoyed besides the analysis, but even then it wasn't particularly amazing. I won't go into the results but yeah they missed a LOT of things regarding Glacius, so yeah. This one was an ouchie for me.
15: At least Venom VS Bane had things I could talk about....still this was some terrible filler. Not as bad as Batman VS Black Panther (oh we will get to that once your Season 5 ranking is out), but there are so many confusing things in the script. Like some of the shots did not need to be there or felt absolutely incomplete. At least the death was good....that's all I got.
14: Lucario VS Renamon used to be a 5/10 for me, but that disgusting decision of including NSFW Renamon art is enough for me to give it a 4/10, how the fuck did I not remember that? Fight was also another example of just...existing. episode kinda bad.
13: Lara VS Nathan still has some of the worst dialogue and writing in any episode, my opinions haven't changed on that. Okay it's not the absolute bottom of the barrel, but as someone who actually knows these characters I was pretty unhappy. Nathan was...fine, but still disappointing considering the character. But my god Lara was such a fucking idiot, she shoot the cup but then calls Nathan a dumb fucking cretin and a dumb fucking fool, she lets Nathan pull out an AK, and don't get me started on that awful Jeep scene. Also why was the whole helicopter escape even a thing??? My god I continue to get frustrated over this episode, however I will say the death isn't disrespectful to Nathan. You could just say that his luck ran out or idk....irony???
12: Beyond Batman Burger VS In 2077 Spiderman definitely happened weeeeeeeee, that death still confuses me. I will note that I friggin' love Beyond 2099, is it underrated? I don't really see anyone talk about it so sure.
11: Remind me why Android 18 VS Captain Marvel happened again? Overall the episode just...exists for me, it's a whatever 6/10 but still. Action was fine enough but there are also a lot of things holding it back. I still find it hilarious how Captain Marvel has had like 2 Ls in this show despite Marvel wanking her so much like lmao-
10: The sound design in Zero VS Metal Sonic continues to horrify me, like what even happened??? Much as I want to say this episode is good there are so many parts where I can't tell what's going on. The 3D shots are....inventive but not needed. I mean I dunno I still think this one was alright but it's aged horribly.
9: I feel like the reason why people used to say Natsu VS Ace was so forgettable was because the outcome was obvious. But hey, there's a lot of good stuff even if a lot of things still aren't working for me. The scene where their shadows are fighting in the fire (I don't know how to describe it) is good stuff and yeah, the hand drawn death manages to beat out some of the hand drawn moments in modern death battle. That says a lot.
8: Thor VS Wonder Woman is....something I'm mixed on. I still think it's good enough but ouch it has not aged well. I mean yeah it's serious business when the animation breaks Torrian's computer, but it doesn't change the fact that it's still not visually amazing. Voice actors did great, but some moments don't work for me like Thor going berserk since he sounded really dumb at times. The death is also bad in almost every aspect....so normally this would be enough for the episode to really drop in the rankings, but I still enjoyed it enough. I dunno, there were just a lot of cool moments, still really sad that this is Wonder Woman's best episode. Thor already got his redemption arc, but in all seriousness PLEASE do not bring WW back for a fourth fucking time.
7: Nowadays Smoky VS McGruff isn't nearly as impressive, but I cannot deny how much of a milestone it was for being the first truly hand-drawn episode. And just in general it's a surprisingly good time, analysis was unique and interesting and the animation, while again, not as impressive today, is still pretty decent. There are flaws, yes. McGruff is...really out of character at the start, which unfortunately kind of hurts the death a bit, and the choreography has very little going on. But at the time I was still really enjoying myself watching the episode. Kind of interesting how this match-up was a shitstomp-
6: I really like Scrooge VS Shovel Knight...sadly it's dropped a bit for me. While the unique style and animation are fun some parts are....eh. It feels like Scrooge didn't get to do much even if the way he killed SK left a huge impact, also Shovel Knight is kinda out of character at the beginning. At this point though those are sort of nitpicks, this was still a pretty enjoyable episode for me.
5: I don't know why 14 year old me got so weirded out with the conclusion for Naruto VS Ichigo conclusion, not that I disagreed with it...I think younger me just disliked some of the stupidly overpowered feats both characters had. But honestly....is that anything new? I loved the analysis and the animation, while it felt kinda oversaturated or I didn't get what was going on at certain points, it was quite the adrenaline pumper. The trade-offs between abilities were pretty good, as I said the action was really fast and the climax was great.
4: Sephiroth VS Vergil is still a pretty excellent episode for me, the animation was way better than I remember. The action is really solid and the ending was surprisingly shocking to me, I thought Vergil was going to win purely because he won the One Minute Melee episode...young me was so naive. Though there are flaws, like Wall Level Vergil.....I have never seen more of an utter curveball than that, also Vergil do be kinda w i d e in the animation. One Winged Devil is also pretty great, not finale material but it's good stuff.
3: Holy heck Silver Samurai VS Shredder goes off hard, while it was short it doesn't feel like a single second is wasted. It really depicts the idea that both contestants only need a single good hit....and then Super Shredder happens. Similar to the analysis, you kind of get the idea that Super Shredder beats the shit out of SS, and the animation depicts it perfectly. He is large, imposing and absolutely terrifying. The final shot seals the idea that Super Shredder is an unstoppable horror to Silver Samurai, and the death does not disappointing.....I had a lot to say about this hm. Shredding Silver is also a banger track, please please please listen to it if you haven't...though the version used in the episode isn't available.
2: Power Rangers VS Voltron, against all odds, manages to only be the second best episode of the season. Wow. Analysis was pretty good, but the animation is excellent stuff. It really feels like an episode out of either franchise with all of the dialogue, action, etc. MatPat doesn't bother me too much, the only thing is that he just sounds like himself, so now I think MatPat is piloting Voltron, not the actual character. Still, this is overall a consistently excellent episode with an especially amazing death that highlights the best of the voice acting, animation, and writing team.
1: Yeah Balrog VS TJ Combo is still one of my all-time favorite episodes, just about everything in it comes together for me. The only issues I can point out is that Balrog's cape clips through his model that one time....and his arm breaking looks weird. That's it. Everything here is great to pitch perfect, the analysis is really interesting and managed to make me more interested in sports than, welp, actual sports TV. It's also amazing just how close this fight was, at that point it ultimately just came down to their skills and abilities, I absolutely love match-ups like that. And the animation truly feels immersive, I mean yeah TJ's theme is pretty much blasting through out the entire thing but stillllll. The action is well choreographed and TJ's comeback is one of the best in the show and just adds to the immersion. Overall it's definitely no surprise to me that this is one of my favorites and it's probably going to stay that way.
i do agree that Season 4 is definitely one of the weakest seasons of the show but honestly I'm glad that we managed to still get a few bangers...ok bye-
