“Im just glad I was able to grow my wife’s favorite vegetable” girls get you a man like jun who will plant your fav veggies. That was honestly so pure I loved it
Next time you have super long stems, do not hesitate to plant them a bit deeper. It makes for a sturdier plant that way. The plant will be less sensible to drought and wind and will spend less energy making the stem all study. Also, don't hesitate to plant them a bit tighter. Having too much space between plants can be detrimental (allows weeds to grow, water to evaporate more etc...). You mentionned the need to have better drainage (wich makes sense since your climate seems quite humid) but since your soil seems very sandy, you should be fine.
This is exactly what I wanted to say to Jun. Especially with cabbage (and its family) you not only can, but should plant deeper than the level it was at as a young plant/seedling.
I find it interesting that Japan (or at least that region in Japan) also has acidic soil. I live in the US, and I was surprised when a youtuber was adding sulfur to his soil to help his vegetables grow, when I have always added lime in my region. It turns out that where he lives has a lot of limestone, so the pH of the soil is very basic and sulfur will take it closer to neutral. Geology and the way it affects horticulture is just fascinating.
I bought a kid to test soil alkalinity and rocked the test tube gently [my father was a chemist and used to take us to the lab] and BAM. That's Arizona 4 u.
It makes sense that Hawaii has acidic soil since it was formed from volcanic activity. I guess Japan was too. Peat moss makes the soil more loamy. Where I am has lots of clay and not much else, I suspect Hawaii has very sandy soil. I could see very sandy soil in Jun's garden. We add peat moss and sand to amend the soil so it's easier for roots to penetrate, then we lime everything down to bring the soil closer to neutral.
Possible Romanesco hack: Harvest only the edible bit and leave the plant as is - my broccoli instantly regrew, so it might work for romanesco as well! It gives you a few harvests from the same plant, without having to wait for a new plant to mature. :)

what a guy; cook and gardener , everything done gracefully and well: that’s why i like this channel so much. i like watching people doing things well with their hands
My fiance and I planted a garden last year and we made so many mistakes and hardly got anything out of it but we learned a lot. This year we should do a lot better but the weather has been crazy.
I wish you luck! Even the most experienced farmers make mistakes but get better each year. The first year is really learning about your land and any trouble spots you may have, or figuring out how much maintenance certain plants take. There's no way to know for sure if it will work out until you just try it. I work as a gardener, so when my clients tell me they want to start a vegetable garden, and if I have any suggestions, I always tell them to start with cherry tomatoes, beans, kale, parsley, chives, and basil. I think those are the easiest, while also producing something that's pretty easy to cook with, and you get a good yield.
Look into adding (used) coffee grounds and egg shells into the initial holes when planting. They add slow release nitrogen and calcium and phosphorus all season. And the shells have an added anti-slug benefit. Lookingforward to more about your garden adventures!
Thanks for the update! If the cabbage head doesn't form, I think you can still eat the younger inside leaves in things like stir fry and as a salad. I failed the first time I did cabbage too.. but my failure was I didn't protect it from bugs :( Those paths are really ideal for walking in. Are you allowed to put something in them to keep your feet above any mud or wet, like stepping stones or pieces of wood? Also, to keep the roots warm maybe a paper, grass or cardboard mulch? It would keep weeds down, keep your topsoil there, and encourage good microbial balance in the soils. I know Japan gets lots of rain, and it's cold in the north, but that's about all I know of your climate
That's so sweet to be growing Rachel's favorite vegetable! I can't wait to see what you do the rest of the year and next year. You've learned (and taught us) so much!!
Thank you for the video, it is very helpful to widen my view of making a food film in Seoul. These days due to COVID-19, many people have a difficult time. Stay safe and healthy. Let's hope this is contained and over soon.
Beetroot needs similar growing conditions to Romanesco, and is one of my favourite vegetables to cook with. You can eat the leaves (they're chard with skinny stems) as well as the roots. I imagine the rich purple-red colour would make the root an absolute dream for a Japanese chef. My favourite way of cooking it is Borscht, an eastern European soup that is packed with shredded root veg, mostly beetroot. I sometimes do an Anglicised version by cutting the veggies chunky and adding venison or beef, red kidney beans and red wine. Perhaps you could experiment and figure out a Japanese take on the original recipe?
Jun, man... I've gotta tell you that all your hard work makes for one of the most relaxing and enjoyable videos I've seen. I really appreciate you sharing it with us! Good luck with the veggies!!!
Yay a update on this! Edit: I just watched the whole video and I’m so glad you were able to make so much progress on the garden and get some vegetables you can use! Anyway Great editing and content as usual
What a cute garden, it's interesting how climate and the weather affect the planting period. Living in a place with no natural disasters and a tropical climate, I can plant almost anytime I want in the year.
It’s always interesting to me to see what people can grow in different places. I live in North Alabama (USDA zone 7b) and I tried a bunch of different “winter vegetables” this year (kale, beets, cabbage, and broccoli) and my only vegetable that did anything was Tuscan kale. Now I’m just waiting for March to begin so I can experiment with early spring vegetables. I’m trying arugula (rocket), carrots, snow peas, and an edible flower seed mix my aunt sent me for Christmas that has nasturtiums, pansies, snapdragons, basil, lovage, and a bunch of other varieties. Most of these are spring here because by June temperatures can get well over 30 degrees Celsius and stay that way until September sometimes into October. So I have a whole list of heat-loving veggies I grow every year, but spring and fall are unpredictable so often we don’t get a lot. It’s either too hot or too cold.
Been waiting for an update on the garden since you and Rachel cleared the weeds out, glad you at least got the Romanesco to grow properly, the Cabbage looks more like the way Mignonette lettuce grows (open leaved and not a ball), not sure if that's lack of sunlight or not. P.S. Haku and Poki look super cute having a bro hug lol.

I hope this inspires other people to grow their own produce and give them confidence to try new things. Your videos always bring a smile to my face and I get excited every time you upload one. I wish the absolute best for your vegetables. I know that you will have success Jun. Recently I started growing a bonsai tree. It’s gradually getting bigger and I hope it will last awhile, I’ve been doing my best to care for it wish me luck.
I've been having a really tough day today but watching this instantly calmed me down, from to music, to your voice, to the wonderful pureness of your gardening. Thankyou so much Jun, warm wishes from England
That is a beautiful romanesco. Give the red cabbage a little longer, it looks like it is just starting to head. Then again it might just bolt (flower and go to seed) before the head fully forms. Now it’s time to work on the summer crops! Nice of your plot neighbor to share a little of their harvest.
If the cabbages don't become balls that's ok, you can still eat the leaves. It takes time to iron out your gardening techniques to something that works for you. Your garden is doing wonderfully. 👍
As for being late in planting your garden, I would not worry as it still looks very nice, the vegetables are in healthy shape and still edible. I can just imagine what next season's bounty will look like. 🙌 for nurturing Rachel's favorite vegetable.

you can plant closer & off-center (alternating left & right side of the mound) to fit for more type plants in your row. Their roots and leaves will still be far enough not to compete with one another. Good Job on your first one!
jun, when you take the plant out of its pot, make sure to "tease" the roots, by that i mean break up the brick of soil, this makes it easier for the roots to expand into the other soil around the compost it was initially potted in
How interesting. It looks like a soil with a lot of sand in it, the kind of soil that's perfect for carrots. It will be interesting to watch things grow.

Nice to watch this as I’m planting seeds tonight to get a jumpstart on my own summer vegetable garden!! Every year I swear I’ll start my seeds by mid Feb... and every year I find myself paying thru the nose for seedlings in early May that other people grew. NOT THIS YEAR!!!
The cabbage looks like it is flowering, to me. Don't know much about gardening, don't know if planted too early or too late, but flowering on approach of Spring might say late. As you said, they ball up with the cold. Anyway, thank you so much for the update! Garden looks lovely. Can't wait to see more.

Jun, try using a post hole digger when you are planting. My wife saw me using my post hole digger when I was fixing my fence and started using it to plant her flowers and found it to be very useful.
You can harvest some of the outer leaves of the romanesco and make lots of tasty dishes with them. As long as you leave the inners leaves it’ll be fine. It may also help the plant put energy into growing the bulb the center “romanesco” part of the plant instead of the leaves.
Really good first attempt. I would still look at the "No Dig" method, RHS trails show much less prep time, fewer weeds and better cropping. We both work have a garden and a 10 pole, (250 meter square) allotment. Without No Dig we wouldn't have the time to work it.
Since our climates are so different (I want to grow cabbages in January!) the only thing that came to mind was that your soil seems really sandy, so give it all the compost. And then more compost. Also... I need to get some romanescos. If only for the aesthetic value...
I've still got a few more months before i can grow anything in my garden. But i tried cauliflower once and they didn't stand a chance against cabbage loopers. I couldn't figure out what was eating them until it was too late. Cabbage loopers are so small and they camoflage PERFECTLY with the plant!
I loved these videos!!! Please teach us more about Japanese gardening techniques, maintaining the garden, growing staple vegetables, etc... it was really interesting!!

Nicely going Jun!!!!
Gardening ain't easy and it doesn't always work out
But I'm glad Rachel is gonna get her favorite vegetable!!!
I love your soil! Its so sandy
