    Think the RD was suffering from a little clutch slip up the rev range.

    • @TheThunderwars
      @TheThunderwars 4 года назад +20

      When your machine has a lot of torque and you want to preserve the clutch life, shift without clutch by just repositionning the throttle on its lowest position. On a fast twist throttle, you won't loose much time. This is basically what those so expensive "shifters" do, they cut ignition so that power is no going through the gearbox for a certain amount of time in order to enable the dog teeth to slam into another gear. You can do that with any motorcycle since they are all dogbox.

    Great vid! I owned and raced three RZ350s, 83, 85 and 86 models. Ran them till I killed them, yours needs a motor from between 84 and 86, they were the weapons grade series. Congrats on being the first RUclipsr I've seen who let's their RD engine rev through the powerband. I don't know if the others don't understand two stroke characteristics or are afraid of damaging their vintage engines, but they always shift too soon.

      @@RacingSM what are your thoughts on joining two Yamaha IT250 engines, gutting one gearbox and running them on a common shaft? You could shove it in a little CBR Babyblade frame with RD 250 expansion chambers. I'd be thinking 78' ignition timing for a dynamic crank.

    I've old enough to have seen 4 stroke then 2-strokes then the advancement of 4 strokes.
    Most think the 2-strokes were the older engine, no 2-strokes came after 4 strokes.
    In my opinion a modern injected 2 stroke is not only cleaner but considerably more powerful than a 4 stroke equivalent.
    As for reliability, I'd say as long as you're not over tuning a 2 stroke it is just as reliable as any 4 stroke
    Okay, you will need a rebuild, but this said it is likely to cost the same as a major service on a 4 stroke or there about's.

  • @theblytonian3906

    From what I witnessed and heard, and as a two stroke owner and rider for over 40 years and having ridden both of those bikes, I suspect the RD/RX rider was more aggressive and experienced. The RD/RZ (country prefix dependent) is the easier of the two to to ride, which is a plus. The Aprilia RS250 like it's lower compression engine stablemate the RGV250, is more challenging to ride fast than larger capacity two strokes. The RD/RZ will also change line faster (faster rate steering). If I had to choose between the two to ride for fun on the road, I'd choose the RD/RZ (bias ply, steel frame, less brakes) although it doesn't look as cool. On the track, Aprilia RS250 (radial rims, uber rigid alloy frame, much better brakes etc). I currently own an RG500G and RGV250T BTW.

    Always wanted a RD as a teenager, never got one, which is probably good because I would have crashed horribly. Eventually got one in my 30s and even then I still crashed, not horribly but enough to make me realize that the bike is an addictive drug, a blast, but ultimately no good comes of it. I'm a nice safe 4 stroke rider now.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but a afaik, in a comparison of stock bikes between the Aprilia RS250 and the Yamaha RD350, the Aprilia is a bit faster in all aspects, also more agile/effective, mainly because of the modern design, also this is kept with minor tuning (pipes, carburation and few), but with proper tuning the Yamaha, while keeping the displacement, could match the Aprilia and then even surpassing it, then some upgrade would require the rest of the bike to handle such increase of performance accordingly.

    It looked to me like the RS started this "test" below the powerband in every single test. You could see the RD's rpm and the RS's rpm. The RS doesn't even start pulling till 9000rpm and the redline light was set very low.
    It also looks like (and sounds like) the RD has a fair bit of work done to it?

    • @RacingSM
      @RacingSM  5 лет назад +2

      Only for 1 time the RS was bellow 9000rpm, on all the other situations the RS was on the powerband zone
      The redline is set for 12 500rpm @ RS 250, not low :)
      Our RD 350 ( the Aprilia RS is also ours ), like the engine specs on the video description says, the cylinders are OEM ( no porting, nothing at all ), only the OEM cylinder heads were modified ( more CR, different squish and uses O'rings ), it has HPI Ignition, TDR 250 28mm carburetors, modified OEM Airbox ( no sponge inside ), Boost Bottle, JL exhausts and 15 - 39 instead of 17 - 39
      That's not much work at all .. comparing for example with the TDR 385 project we are building at the moment ( based on RD 350 engine ), that one has a lot work .. ( OEM cylinders bored to 65mm, very agressive portmap with huge areas, 34mm carburetors, custom boost bottle, will have custom made exhausts etc ) .. that one is what you can call a " lot of worked engine " :)
      If this RD 350 had more work we would say what was done, no problem telling at all, but it only has what I've mentioned before :)
      But I agree, the sound of the 350 is really incredible, we are also surprised by the overall good result and sound based on the small mods used.

    • @fastr1red
      @fastr1red 5 лет назад +1

      @@RacingSM Ah ok. Yes understood. Very well done I knew the RD was modified. You've done a fantastic job on it.

    • @RacingSM
      @RacingSM  5 лет назад +2

      @@fastr1red Yes, it has some mods, but the engine "internally" / cylinders is stock :)
      Both bikes are ours, but we know that the Aprilia overall is galaxies away better than the this RD 350 since it has OEM wheels and suspensions ( only RD 500 brakes and stiffier suspensions springs )
      But we prefer the 180º ignition sound of the 350, each one has their good and bad stuff :)

    • @RacingSM

      @@PaoloD2R2 ours has 15 - 39 instead of stock 17 - 39 so probably it would not even reach 200 kmh even @12 000rpm
      On the other side, with slim wheels and suspensions and without a steering damper speeds above 180 kmh are dangerous 😱
