I am almost embarrassed to tell you how many tutorials I have watched on making different journal covers. I have to say that you did a TERRIFIC job. Your instructions were clear, you speak well, and while you offered additional side info, you never got track and forced to to fast forward. NICE job! Thanks for taking the time to do this and hope I find that you have others posted. :)
Wow, thank you so much for your wonderful comments Korri! I haven’t done many tutorials yet but hope to do more in the future. Glad you found my channel!❣️
Great project. I was surprised at how much dye was exuded from the file folder. Nice faux leather product. Your little wallet/journal is a sweet treasure.
Great tutorial! I appreciate how you got to the point and showed us the most important steps and info. Your finished product looks great and I'm excited to try embossing with this technique!
Wax, what a great idea! I have horses, so I have western saddles...and plenty of leather wax! I will be doing this project for sure. Thanks for the great video. I used modpodge, and it wasn't good, cracks, and just not pliable like it should have been. Wax is perfect to use!
I watched this video months ago, and it stuck in my head. (I even bought some of the Dorland's Wax Medium, so I would have it on hand when needed). This week, I finally had a project that needed "leather" -- and I tried your technique. It worked BEAUTIFULLY! Thank you so much for making this video and sharing your technique with us! This is my favourite faux leather technique yet -- and will be my "go to" moving forward.
Hi Sharon, I just found you 1,5 year later after you made this tutorial. Great, you explain so well. I’ll keep following you from now on. Greetz from Holland
Thank you for sharing!! Love your wallet too!! I’ve made faux leather out of a paper bag and the video I saw said to use hair conditioner. It worked wonderful. Happy crafting! 💕
Oh, I’m so excited, I have those hanging file folders in my file cabinet and I have Dorland’s wax I can’t believe I have the supplies I need to try this. I’ve used the Dorland’s on pages painted with acrylic paint to keep them from sticking together, I’ve never let the wax dry for 24 hours I’ve just immediately buffed it out and it’s been fine. You’re a natural, you did a great job.
Excellent Job! You’re a GREAT teacher! I use Dorlands on sooooo many paper projects! First started using it to seal my watercolors after mounting them on birch boards. Looking forward to creating with you! TFS! 😍
I’ve been searching for this process for a long time. So glad you came up on my feed! Looking forward to more inspiration and instruction on making books/journals 😁
Thank you for this tutorial, Sharon. Modge Podge also comes in a matte finish, and in Michael's store the other day my daughter and I saw shelves of different types of Mod Podge. I was amazed at the different types there are! You did a great job on your first tutorial, and I love the little journal you made! Great job!
That was a great video! I’ve made faux leather out of paper bags, but going to try the hanging folder. Love the two colors that are produced. Thank you so much for for the tutorial. 💜😎
This looks great! I have made faux leather paper, but I have never tried a file folder. I love file folders and will be sure to try this method especially since it isn't as messy as glycerin water and paper. Thank you :) teri
Thank You for this Tutorial; As I'd never seen this done before seeing your Gardening Journal (Which was Mind-blowingly Stunning BTW! That Wallet Journal is Soo cute! It's cute, yet vintagey looking & just a really neat, well-made, beautiful & fun little Journal! I actually have TONS of those Old Green File Folders! (My Mom is a Retired Nurse who went out of Retirement to work Workman's Comp Cases for several years, & I'm a Retired School Teacher... So we definitely have LOTS of those Old File Folders! I actually have 2-big File Cabinets, full of them; With the thin piece of metal thread through at the top so they can hang.... But that's it! They're all pretty much empty; Just File Cabinet Drawers packed full of the empty Folders! (I may have a problem with not ever wanting to throw things away; Especially if I feel like the thing could potentially become or go inside of a Junk Journal! LOL!) THANKS AGAIN! ...Wanna guess what my Daughter & I will be trying out this weekend? LOL! ~🙏💙🙏~
Hi Sharron, recently came across your channel and love the stuff that you do. It’s always so beautifully perfect! I have a stack of file folders from work and am going to give this a try. Shoe polish is quite good I think but it does smell quite strong!!! Caroline e xxx
Love the technique and the wallet you made! Is the wallet die cut, or do you have a pattern for the wallet, or a separate tutorial on how you made the wallet?
great, could you make a tutorial for the wallet? and is the wallet possible to make without a sewing maching ,say by glue or/and hand stitch and what kind of hand stitch.. i so want to make one fo my hubby
Thank you! I will think about a tutorial for the wallet and other construction options. You certainly could construct using only glue or handstitching. I say anything is possible!
I realize it's been a few years since you posted this video. I just tried doing this WITHOUT soaking the folder in water. Instead, I used olive oil, as so many other videos recommend, and it worked quite well. So, skip the soaking process and save yourself some time!
Sharon, thank you for this tutorial - excellent. I tried making a sample piece earlier in the week and used the wax you recommended - it turned out perfectly! Thank you again.

Thank you Steph! I need to make more of these again. I was a bit surprised too to see that much ink in the water! 🐦

The embossing looks great. I love the whole thing.
Thank you Teri! I'm glad you enjoyed it! 💕
Great video. I can't wait to try it. I have used crinkled brown paper bags that I wax with tan shoe polish to create fake leather. 😊🤗😚😙❤❤❤❤

Thanks, I would melt the wax and brush it on perhaps. I think it would prevent it flattening too much.

That’s great! I’m wondering how the wax responds to white glue? (I tend to glue things rather than stitch them)
Hi Leanne! On waxy surfaces like these I use Art Glitter Glue. It works pretty well on anything shiny or slick. 💕
