The thing with BMW interiors is that they're very colour sensitive. When the interior is all black with a smattering of silver here and there they can look quite plain but if you add some contrasting colours it really does make a difference. Plus the ambient lighting at night lifts it as well. But I take Henry's point here - for this sort of money I'm going 911
The transition at 1:00 from diesel to petrol to convertible model was beautiful 🙌🏼

It’s a good transition, I think they disguised the transition with fake camera shake which is a bit cheaty, but it’s not bad.

there are other variables that can change the weight differential, he was right to state both points
Having owned a convertible in the UK, I’d say hot sunny days are when I want the roof up. Mild spring and autumn days are better, and I have had wonderful top down winter drives when it’s frosty but sunny, so the countryside sparkles like diamonds - just crank the heat all the way up.
You can use a convertible far more often than you think in the UK. It’s so much more of a driving experience than a hardtop, especially if your car sounds decent

I'm the kind of person who'd buy this type of car. I love big GTs in which you can comfortably do long distances or even just use it for casual rounds in the city. But I am not sold on the 8 series' looks. And for this type of car (and it's price), looks are definitely important. I'd rather have an M6 or a 911 instead of this.
Agree. Starting $130K price... you couldget a nice Carrera S or M6 instead.

This car is competent but not desirable, as is most of the current BMW range.
So happy about this, I had a chance to drive the original V12 a year ago and it was so superb. Thirsty but superb. It's just a different experience to what you would think for a vehicle of the size and he is dead on it doesn't feel heavy. Wish I could drive this one.

I’ve owned quite a few different BMW’s and Porsche’s so I have no dogs in this race, but if anyone wants to buy this over a 911 gts convertible, then you’re mad. It will depreciate far too quickly and that interior is not what you expect when you pay 100k plus for a car.
It just looks perfect! Plus it sounds way better than M8.
3:23 the hood is not closed properly!!!!! It's hard to click the 8 series... Only one side grabbed the hood.

I wholeheartedly agree. The previous generation 6 series was the best. Hardtop, droptop, or the Gran Coupe, it was fabulous. I'd love to have one.
It sounds like they’ve managed to make the same mistake as they made with the old 8. Place it in a segment with tough competition and give it no weapons.
When having a convertible the rule of thumb is roof up to go somewhere and roof down to come home
This get rids of bad hair days and work etc etc but doesn’t matter on the way back home

Disappointed to see the roof doesn’t have the buttresses and vertical glass retractable window of the 6er convertible.
I’m always annoyed at the jokey notion that in the UK convertibles are just for the 1 sunny day a year, firstly we have lots of sunny days, actual summer is often way too damn hot and relentless, we have very days days of the year where you can’t have the roof down at some point with overall mild climate. You don’t need blazing sunshine to put the roof down you just need anything other than super heavy rainfall.
In fact the most fun you can have is often when it’s cold, having the roof down and heated seats on while blasting through a white Peak District at 60mph is a magical experience. My default state is roof down, only to occasionally put the roof up when needed.
I was only joking! Given that I once drove a Caterham Seven roofless for six months through a UK winter I'm in complete agreement with you that you don't need sunshine to enjoy open-top motoring. And yes, the buttresses on the six were nice.

I totally agree that the pricing of this car is just way out of bounds.
It would have to be seriously luxurious and capable to warrant that price over a model lower down BMW's range. That's before looking at other cars/brands, and I just dont think it offers enough for that price.
You're pushing R8 and Aston Martin prices for that sort of money....
It should be between 70-90k.

How can you call it nitpicking when it's his opinion, especially given that Catchpole has spent time each of the cars he mentioned?
His job is to convey his opinions, including what he thinks of this car compared to others. Just because of what he says doesn't align with what you believe, don't mean he's nitpicking or wrong.
How much time have you spent in all of these cars?
Pretty sure he didn't mention anything about the colour of the interior either.
Follow The Grow The 8 series does not use 12 cylinder engines anymore, so less fuel and more fun ! As for performance, wait until the M8 comes out ! That car will be both lighter and faster than that big heavy monster from MERCEDES BENZ !
I'm not arrogant, I'm just better than you. He said the interior was boaring or bland, but that’s an option thing because the one he drove had all black interior ! You can spec it as you wish making it much more exiting ! And for the record i have spent alot of time in the all new M850i xdrive coupe allready ! However not so much the other brands and with good reason ... i don’t have to !😁

The interior colour doesn't equate to layout, practicality, tech, value or how it compares to other cars.
I think someone who has Catchpole's experience wouldn't dismiss the interior of a car just based on the colour spec.

I actually think the M850i convertible is a great looking car.
BMW's - and most particularly recent BMW's - have always left me a bit cold. I get that they are hugely capable but so are a lot of other alternatives and they would have heaps of soul for the expense, perhaps, of a couple of tenths here and there. They're great cars - I just don't 'desire' one...
Do you have any tips for getting into filming car videos? I'm a TV Graduate and working in a kitroom, training to be a camera op. It's always been my dream to film cars, but I have no idea how the industry works or how I could get started in it. Any advice would be hugely helpful!
Check out the grille opening as the roof opens at 3.11 - cool, but im not sure why its cool!
It sounds pretty bland to me for a V8. BMWs recent ones all sound ve to synthesied, compared to a V8 S560 for example, and obviously the S63.

@@yapyap544 yeah but listen to all the bi turbo AMG engines, from the 43's V6 to the 4.0 V8 M177. They all sound sick . M division on the other hand, need artificial speaker noise!
Nice summer vid specially with the - looks like - canola fields background . Nice piece of kit but , everything which is nearby 911 territory turns into 911, like the matrix agent’s smith. Well done !
The interior is definitely a let down, especially after the glory that the old 6 series interior was/still is. Don't really know or see what they've changed about besides the name to justify the extra £25k it costs over the old 650i cabrio.
For the money I'd definitely much rather have a 992 4S cabrio instead. May not be as comfortable in a GT sense but it would be much more fun to drive and has 2 equally useless rear seats

Love convertibles, I was in love with the car, everything simple, perfect for someone like me. But after hearing the price...nah. Disappointing pricing.
The claimed 0-100kmh stats are bs on this car i think. If it was 3.9 seconds it would be faster than BMW M6. I seen videos of the M850i getting smoked by literally every car it was drag racing against
it is 3.9seconds to 100km and go do your research before you say it is bs and don't know what videos you watch were the M850i gets smoked
If it looked more like the original 8 series it would have been special and more liked , this car looks too much like a 3 series or x2 , not bespoke enough . Shame because mechanicaly i think its close to best in class. A missed opportunity by bmw current designers again . Going by recent form like the new 1 series we will have to go through more pain before there is gain .

I wasn't sure BMW was going to be able to improve on the looks of the 6 series. Parts of it are perfect. This car is amazingly beautiful. How can they possibly improve this?
And I find it strange that car journalists keep saying they can't figure it out. It's too big for a sports car, too nimble to be a GT. It's a big beautiful, extremely fast luxury convertible with enough room in the back for your dogs bed. What else does it need to be?
I'd like to see a real GT 2+2 convertible comparison test. Drive across Europe with what you deem to be the competition in the approximate price bracket.
I agree, BMW interiors are losing soo much ground for Mercedes... look to simple and cheap and all the same. Mercedes interiors you feel luxury and special
And yet the BMW's have better quality interior then the Mercedes, fur coats and no knickers so to speak.
Mercedes interiors are flash, if you like that sort of thing you should get one.
Clearly it is the usability(or not) of rear seat space that will sell(or not) this vehicle.

Absolutely, or being able to recline the seat and take a nap. Couldn't do that in a Merc.

Just same as all the other reviews on RUclips. Why doesn't anyone check the space in the back. I'm interested in a 4-seater convertible but there are not many reviewers that focus on this. Not with MercedesBenz reviews, not with BMW reviews, not with Audi reviews.... And they call them selfs automotive journalists ans car reviewers….tsssssssssss.

Henry - please leave UK weather out of it. It's a cliché, unworthy of you. I've a few convertibles, one of which I use most weeks splendid out of fear that if it doesn't get a run, it will die. Hasn't had the roof on for years...

It almost looks like the hood is only latched on one side for the rolling exterior shots. Compare the area just above each headlight on either side...

Why does BMW always lend the media black interior cars? To me black interiors are so boring and let the cars down.
I get what you mean, it looks nice and all but it just looks a bit boring on they interior. Most open roof cars have a very fresh interior, and this looks like an interior you find on any other bmw. But it still a great car nonetheless.
@R A I don't know in my opinion audi makes the best quality and looking interior in the car industry. Mercedes interior is fine except for the 2 big screen they just threw in there. And i didn't say bmw interior is bad, its mostly that i think an open top vehicle should have a more lively interior. Same happens with audi and mercedes, but could also be because this M8 had black interior in this vid. And if you buy an Convertible you should never ever buy black interior or you should get shot.
I dont get the point of this car. It's too big and heavy to be a proper sportscar and it's too small for 4 passengers. So it loses to both the 911 and the S Coupe.

@@Arman-nl6mg Well the cars look boring, but I guess that is quite a subjective thing. But what's even worse is that they are no longer best in class when it comes to driving dynamics. A BMW 5-series is no better than a Mercedes E-class. The 1-series is has become FWD, the M cars are no match for the AMG and Porsches, and what is even worse there is no halo sportscar, no intent. Instead we get this. An overpriced, heavy, and well, quite boring car neither here nor there. If BMW stopped producing the 8-series tomorrow no one would care. The ultimate driving machine? Not anymore.

I’ve ordered a 2022 BMW M850 I . My dealer doesn’t have the allocation for my build. I’m a little disappointed that I don’t know when it will be built and delivered.
Is it just me, or does the exhaust noise sound a little... I don't know... Fake, I suppose?
The 8 Series has always been a bit like the outsider trying to infiltrate an already perfectly operational club. Is it needed, given the current range? No, no it isn't and BMW have made it very obvious that the 8 is a total after-thought within the range. The market is not there. They should simply cut it now once the statutory initial production run is complete. Fabulous film as always though and Henry continues his wonderful standard.
Is BMW going soft, or are they afraid of putting in things that make it truly worth the money? As much as I like the droptop, the interior looks pretty sparse, considering someone who would pay well over 100K for it. Just my opinion but with reservations.

Now when you want to spend Bentley or Aston Martin money on something a lot duller and a bit pointless, you don't have to get what's become of the Mercedes SL.
This is a beautiful car, but I would def take the Mercedes AMG GT over this. This 8 series isn’t even an //M car, and it’s in the price range of performance AMG flagship cars. 🤔
way to pricey
As much as I enjoy a convertible, I'd love to see BMW make an 8-series shooting brake in the style of the beautiful and much missed Mercedes CLS or fantastic Porsche Sport Turismo. But £107k is nuts. It looks ordinary, inside and out.
As much as I normally enjoy these videos, the way you turn to camera for that bit longer than necessary makes me cringe. I get it, you have to engage your audience, but it is unnerving all the same.
I had a Saab 95 convertible; I think this one will be my next purchase.
I think bmw should have targeted the 8 Series as more of a sports GT, say more AMG GT or 911 than a softer GT like the S Class Coupe/Convertible.
The 8 is still an excellent car, but at £107,000+ options, I think I’d find myself in a Porsche or Mercedes dealer instead.
I agree on pricing. I wouldn’t wanna see this car falling victim to the pricing policy of BMW.It’s a great car,but 911 for the same money is a big deal.

I'm sure it's a nice car in a lot of ways, you'd hope so for the money. It looks good in your video too. But in person I find the new 8, coupe or convertible, to be absolutely hideous looking!
