When this film first came out, I was a mountaineering instructor at an outdoor centre. I booked the day off for the movie, six months in advance and then saw it in a cinema that had a screen that was only just bigger than the TV I own these days. I love that the organic 35mm grain structure is intact in this trailer. It's really lacking from the Disney+/UHD Bluray presentation of the film, as it is an upscale of the 2K master with too much noise reduction applied, making certain shots look very waxy and pasty.

Memories of ‘99. Right before I saw the movie I went to Toys R Us, drooling over new Star Wars action figures. Literally a dream come true. Then after the show I had Taco Bell and browsed Blockbuster Video. This actually happened. What a time to be alive! ❤
I'm 35 now and man I sure miss those days. Used to leave Hollywood video on a Friday with an absolute stack of new movies to binge in HS. Playing outside too, not a lot of kids do that anymore. Good times!
This movie has such a special place in so many people's hearts, especially the young kids who grew up with this being the first star wars movie they saw in theaters. Was impossible not to tear up being in a packed movie theater after 25 years in 2024 to see it again with all of those same kids that are now adults around 30. Really beautiful experience man. I can't wait for the re-release of AOTC and ROTS
Absolutely. They definitely won't slate these movies and complain about them until a future film called "The Last Jedi" shows them what a bad Star Wars movie REALLY looks like /s
This was the very first movie I got to see in theatres. I begged my mom to let us go see it with my brother. She finally agreed and It opened the world of Star Wars for us. It doesn't matter what people say about it; this movie created special memories for a 13-year-old. It will always be one of my favorite and special films.
I love this movie and the entire Prequel Trilogy, I'm so glad these movies are getting love and recognition. Star Wars wouldn't be the same without them, they added so many interesting things to the canon. Today is also the 19th anniversary of Revenge of the Sith. I hope this film returns to theaters next year for the 20th anniversary ♥️
@@ChristianHallenbeck2002 what's wierd is that these people are giving money to Disney (who created the sequel trilogy and disregarded Anakins fate and sacrifice) to see Phantom Menace, the genesis of Anakin and the beginning of Qui-Gons view of the chosen one to destroy the sith. He's all CG in the movie, so jarring to see this poorly done puppet version in the trailer. I think the main problem is his face is too stiff. The OG puppets were much more expressive

This was in the cinema last week for its 25 year anniversary. People clapped when the Star Wars logo came on the screen. It was such a nostalgic experience. I watched this movie almost every week as a child and I still love it. I could talk along some of the scenes (as did another guy a row behind me in the cinema, lol). It is just so much fun. The Naboo planet is gorgeous and the pod racing sound effects are insane. I think this is my most watched movie ever.
I was there too back at the cinema recently for the 25th anniversary. Even though I saw it in cinemas when the movie first came out, I was a little too young to remember the event. Seeing it again all these years later was a truly remarkable experience. One thing I never appreciated was how truly great the sound of this movie is. Not just the musical score but all the sound mixing and audio effects.
A huge thanks and congratulations to LucasFilm for scanning and releasing this trailer. It looks marvelous. It would be nice to see a new scan of a nice interpositive of the whole feature that maintains the 99 theatrical cut and quality of the original prints.
There was a web site - Apple trailers. And usually there were 3 sizes - 180p, 240p and 360p. And the "Phantom Menace" trailer was the first avalible in 480p! The resolution was outstanding! I still have those trailers burned on a CD somewhere...
Yeah I’m a lil confused. Like this probably for Disney- but it would’ve been nice to see the remastered shots for the trailer not the original trailer reuploaded
@@thefriendlygamer2221 Episodes 1-3 UHDs were made with 2K masters. Episodes 2-3 were filmed in 1080p so they can never be 4K. Phantom Menace however was shot on 35mm
I’m 32 now. I remember when this came out. I used to watch episode 4,5,6 on VHS all the time. My mom had recorded them off the tv onto blank tapes. This was the first new Star Wars movie for my generation. I was 8 I believe. I remember being POD Racer Anakin that Halloween ( or it may have been the year after that ). Either way I was psyched and my mom took me to see this a million times. Same with episode 2, and 3. Star Wars was her favorite movie saga and I was already hooked on the original trilogy. Being able to go to the actual movie theater and experience the magic was something else. I’ll never forget that feeling.
1999 was a peak time to be a movie fan. Phantom Menace, Fight Club, The Mummy, The Matrix, Office Space, The Boondock Saints, The Iron Giant, American Pie, The Blair Witch Project, Galaxy Quest, Austin Powers, 10 Things I Hate About You, Cruel Intentions, The 6th Sense, American Beauty, Disneys Tarzan, and so much more.
i remember when this was shown on movie trailers channel on our tv in florida. my mom taped it when i was sleeping and she told me the next morning she had surprise for me and it was the teaser trailer for episode one. i watched that over and over again and when the second trailer came out with the title, i got goose bumps from watching it, it had me so excited.
Because it had a good story marred by terrible execution. The prequels, coupled with the Clone Wars show, tell the story of the fall of the Republic and the Jedi, and how Palpatine deceived everyone. We don't watch these movies because they're good; we watch them because they tell an important story that makes the story of the originals that much more impactful. That's why this movie is loved.
You should see peoples reactions that are seeing the TPM for the first time in 2024, they love it, and can't comprehend the hate and disappointment from older fans, the truth is this movie has aged really well, it had the Lucas touch, specifically made for 10 year old boys, to capture a new generation of SW fans.
I was a projectionist at the time, and when these trailers arrived I strung all 7 together, and I put on a special preview screening for the cinema staff, watching it 7 times in a row on the biggest screen in the place. Magical.

I'll NEVER forget the excitement of sitting in the theater, the lights going down, and seeing that "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." come on the screen!
I worked at an AMC 30 screen theater when this movie came out 25 years ago; total and complete madness! There was a line that wrapped around the building and inside of it for two days. However the perk of working with so many big crowds of people was not just seeing the occasional sexy blonde in those crowds, or laughing at a Princess Leia camping out on the sidewalk outside or inside the theater, but we got to see it a few days early at the employee screening! For my friends they gave me money and I bought us all tickets for opening night!
I never understood all the wining of how this film was “disappointing.” It was my introduction to Star Wars and I always enjoyed it and find it criminally underrated.
Me neither. The podracing scene was breathtaking! I think people don't like it because of Jar Jar and Anakin flying the N1 with no prior flying experience... But he's the freaking chosen one, unlike Rey...
@@exe16 He said that he was a pilot and he participated in that podrace. Also, unlike Rey (aside from one instance where she crashed the Falcon and yet flew it with relative ease), Anakin struggled to get the Naboo starfighter off of automatic pilot and pushes all the wrong buttons. “I’m trying to, I don’t know where the trigger is.” “Oops, wrong one. Maybe this one.”
Man, I remember as a kid i came home from school and there it was... Star Wars The Phantom Menace on VHS.. its case standing upwards on the counter. Me and my brother were so hyped to watch it again, those were the days :')
THE SAGA BEGINS MAY 1999. still get the same euphoric feeling in the pit of my stomach whenever i see that. i remember the immeasurable excitement i had leading up to the May 19th release. i was 16 then and cut school to see it at the Sam Eric theater in downtown Philadelphia. saw it an addition 4 times throughout the summer of 1999. i just saw the 25th anniversary release a few weeks ago. same feeling. it is a great movie.
My favourite Star Wars film! I love Qui Gon, Duel of Fates, Young Ani, Pod Racing, Politics, Naboo, Queen Amidala, everything! So happy to see it get some love ❤️
Love this on film. Can't tell you how many times I saw this while I worked at a theater in '99, had to keep the reel from brain wrapping on the platter. Good times.
Man, I watched this trailer countless times when it first released. I was still in high school and this was the first glimpse of anything truly new from Star Wars since I was 2 or 3 (of course I don’t remember seeing RotJ back then, but I had some sick Star Wars bedsheets lol).
Recently went and seen this in theaters again for the 25th anniversary. I went to the original for my birthday party as a child, was incredible to see it on the big screen again. Timeless.
They’ve changed the color grading again! Release the whole movie with these colors, not with all the DNR and terrible color grading that are currently plaguing the old blu-rays and D+ versions.

Right before I saw the movie I went to Toys R Us, drooling over new Star Wars action figures. Literally a dream come true. Then after the show I had Taco Bell and browsed Blockbuster Video. This actually happened. What a time to be alive! ❤
Now only Taco Bell is left…😕
Wow, this movie sounds great.
Don't get your hopes up.
man , surely the fans will treat this film and its actors with as much respect and love as they deserve....
Mine was ALIEN. You’re lucky.
Disney does need your money, so yeah they probably will. They're good and rallying the sheep.
Actually, yes,it's very wierd from a storytelling and marketing standpoint.
@@Amp661 What’s weird is people calling these movies good.
People were RIGHT about these movies in the early 2000’s.
@@Amp661 Wahhhh

Still a blazing trailer. What a moment in time that was.
I forgot how vile Yoda’s original look was
I just don't understand how they got it so wrong. You had the top puppet master and incredible FX team, he just looks off.
@@LouGriffith hes younger here
He's all CG in the movie, so jarring to see this poorly done puppet version in the trailer.
I think the main problem is his face is too stiff. The OG puppets were much more expressive
@@xephyrxero He wasn't CG in the original release.
Gonna need the entire movie re-scanned from the 35mm negatives sans DNR.
No DNR

feels every second. nostalgia, memories, fandom, love, passion, geeking... so much language to describe it and yet it at the same time it doesn't seem complete
May 19th 1999. A day that will long be remembered. May the 4th (Force) be with you. Always.
I remember seeing this trailer for the first time in cinema, we went to watch The Matrix. Once the music started we were all in awe. We immediately said no way, star wars? What a time it was...
Wow, 25 years already? That’s crazy.
The 90s were just 5 years ago.
Search your feelings, you know it to be true.
@@pixelbat It damned feels like it! It scares the hell out of me whenever I see a TV show billed as a "period drama," or "period sitcom," and its set in the 90s! Makes me feel sick sometimes!
i was 9 years old when I saw this in 1999 theaters with my family
Same!!! We were the same age as lil’ Ani! And yet… we would be considered too old to train
Looks a lot better without DNR
I remember downloading this on Quicktime back in the day, waiting FOREVER!!
Still got chills watching this! 😊
There was a web site - Apple trailers. And usually there were 3 sizes - 180p, 240p and 360p. And the "Phantom Menace" trailer was the first avalible in 480p! The resolution was outstanding! I still have those trailers burned on a CD somewhere...
Thanks for bringing this Movie back in cinemas and for me feeling like a child again ❤
I'm surprised nobody else is commenting on it, but I love how it seems to be before we even knew what the subtitle was
I probably watched this trailer 100 times back in 1999 on QuickTime 😅
I must admit: I still really love this movie. Saw it in cinema back then, great experience!
The beauty of the prequels shall be revisited again
Cool can’t wait for the first Star Wars movie to get remastered
All the star wars films have been remastered on 4k for years
They just uploaded the remastered trailer today for the 25th anniversary
The one on Blu ray isn't the theatrical version
@@thefriendlygamer2221 They were joking. Lucas has "remastered" the first movie several times.
Insane how much better this movie is than people think. Maybe the best looking Star Wars movie
That would be The Last Jedi or Rogue One. The CGI in these prequels looks very dated.
And when the TV show: The Sopranos also first started / aired / came out
25 years... I feel old.
Very underrated movie
Was such a perfect time as a kid to be ushered into the Galaxy far far away. Ill never forget
It took me hours to download this on dial up back in the day, but I had this saved on my old NEC tower and watched it constantly.
One of the best Star Wars movies ever. Prove me wrong
Ooooh they remastered the TRAILER. Got it.
i remember when this was shown on movie trailers channel on our tv in florida. my mom taped it when i was sleeping and she told me the next morning she had surprise for me and it was the teaser trailer for episode one. i watched that over and over again and when the second trailer came out with the title, i got goose bumps from watching it, it had me so excited.

I can’t believe the love for this movie. Still remember the immense let down walking out of the State College, PA theater. Originals forever.
Magical.
I hope these films never get a bad sequal
😂😭
The prequels were a bad sequel lmao
This trailer looks intriguing. Looks like Disney is getting ready to deliver the best movie they've ever made!
The podracers need to make a comeback!!!
This will be the best Star Wars movie ever! Can't wait to see it!

Step 2: Re-Release trailer when movie is out of theaters

I know right…either they’re incompetent or they HATE making money…I don’t get it.
@@josephdevens6815they're making tons of money with this. You have to think like a business. These sheep will gladly take this, give Disney money and keep the franchise going.
As long as they clean up the scenes, nothing better be changed.
This is just a remaster of the original trailer with4K footage. They aren't doing anything with the actual film.
Now with Ewoks and a new musical number performed by Gungans during the end scene!

They already butched it bad enough with the edits on the DVD version and so on I want the theatrical version
They edited Yodas puppet out for a cheap CGI character
I was 9 years old when my dad took me and my brother on a Thursday to the only cinema on my hometown in Mexico. It was one of the most exciting movies I've seen in the big screen as a kid.
For my friends they gave me money and I bought us all tickets for opening night!
that blonde kid looks so sweet! I sure do hope that he’s not gonna fall to the dark side
@@exe16 Rey sucks
Can’t wait to see this new jar jar binks character, hope he doesn’t become the idealistic reason people will potentially hate these prequel movies
Congratulation ! This is the only good trailer you released in the last 15 years Disney !

Good times.
This movie will always be special for me
I think we'll be getting a Darth Jar Jar Bings film soon..🌚
THANK YOU, GEORGE
Man, I watched this trailer countless times when it first released. I was still in high school and this was the first glimpse of anything truly new from Star Wars since I was 2 or 3 (of course I don’t remember seeing RotJ back then, but I had some sick Star Wars bedsheets lol).
Recently went and seen this in theaters again for the 25th anniversary. I went to the original for my birthday party as a child, was incredible to see it on the big screen again. Timeless.
This Rescan looks gorgeous in 4K! Please consider doing a Re scan of the Full film, I promise it'll be more money for the Mouse😂
You can watch The Phantom Menace in 4K on Disney+ or on 4K UHD Blu-ray if you have a 4K television for both.
This is a different version and was scanned in a different way :P
All the films have been on 4k for years! Lol
The 4k pf phantom menace is pretty weak. They can rescan the original negatives if they want. But i guess Disney won’t
I'm not giving the Mouse anything after they fucked up rotj ending. You dumbasses can if you want.
The young boy from Tattouine seems like a good person. I’m sure he has a bright future ahead of him!
Huh that's wierd. The title logo at the end is missing "The Phantom Menace".
I recorded this on VHS when it was originally released and watched over 100 times! I was so stoked for this movie.
25 years ago I watched this clip SOOOOOOO maniy times... watching it again brought so many emotions.... 🤩
1:57 huh.. The Phantom Menace logo is missing.
It’s because this was the first version of the teaser trailer before the name was revealed. It was added in afterwards.
They’ve changed the color grading again! Release the whole movie with these colors, not with all the DNR and terrible color grading that are currently plaguing the old blu-rays and D+ versions.
And release the original theatrical cut
