  • Track 8 from their fifth album "The Joshua Tree" released in 1987 copyright Island Records. It was recorded at Danesmoate House in Rathfarnham, Ireland, the Edge's house named "Melbeath" in Monkstown by the sea and, of course, Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin, where they had recorded parts of every previous album. The band chose to write songs that were more direct in their message and influenced by the roots music of America and Ireland. The album's theme was America and the wide open spaces and desolation that can be found, particularly in the western deserts. They again used Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno as producers having worked with them on their previous, more experimental album "The Unforgettable Fire." They also brought in Steve Lillywhite, who had produced their first three albums, to produce the final mixes of the songs, partly in an effort to make them more radio-friendly. To say the album was successful is a slight understatement since it's currently listed at No. 44 on the list of the world's best-selling albums. It's sold 25 million copies worldwide, taking the band from heroes to superstars. The album received unanimously excellent reviews and won the Grammy Awards for "Album of the Year" and "Best Rock Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocal" the following year. In 2014 it was inducted into the US National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress for being culturally and historically significant. It reached the Top 40 in seventeen countries, including No. 1 in nine. Among its numerous certifications, it has achieved Platinum or greater status in sixteen countries, including 10X Platinum in the U.K., 14X Platinum in New Zealand and Diamond status in the U.S. and Canada. Written by Bono & U2 and produced by Daniel Lanois & Brian Eno. Featuring:

(In the distance she saw me comin' round)
I was (callin' out, I was callin' out)
Still shakin', still in pain, you put me back together again
I was cold and you clothed me, honey
I was down and you lifted me, honey
    (Angel, angel or devil?)
(I was thirsty and you wet my lips)
    You, I'm waitin' for you
(You, you set my desire, I trip through your wires) woo-hoo, yeah
    Yahoo
I was broken, bent out of shape
I was naked in the clothes you made
Lips were dry, throat like rust
You gave me shelter from the heat and the dust
No more water in the well, no more water, water
    (Angel) angel or devil?)
(I was thirsty and you wet my lips)
    You, waitin' for you
(You, you set my desire, I trip through your wires) oh
Oh I need, oh, I need
Oh, I need, oh, I need it
Oh, I need, oh, I need
    All I need, yeah, yeah
    (Thunder, thunder on the mountain)
(There's a raincloud in the desert sky)
(In the distance she saw me comin' round)
(I was callin' out, I was callin' out)
