    Brent. Thank you so much for the video. I had a cardiac arrest and am not up to quilting on my sewing machine. I don’t have the strength to quit my quilts. Now you have given me a way to quilt them. I love have work and can do it for an hour or so at a time rest then start again. I won’t have to mess with getting the quilt under the needle again and again when wanting to quilt. Well I am on my way to hand quilting. Oh and I love the idea of using tape to quilt. You quilts are a huge inspiration to me. Thank you again

    Brent, your video just popped up when I went to RUclips and so glad it did. I’m somewhat of a beginner at quilting and have wondered abt hand quilting. I have subscribed and will continue to watch you and your progress on this art piece. Thank you for showing us your work, its amazing.

    I've just begun quilting, and I find your story so inspiring, and .Its especially encouraging to listen to another man's experience. I've been experimenting with hand quilting, and found using a hoop cumbersome.I've subscribed to your channel, and look forward to learning from you.

    Thanks for that.. I have just began my hand quilting experimenting. I think I am stitching similar to you which I thought was incorrect as I wasn’t holding the needle like I’ve seen others doing online, but it’s working for me. I just have to get used to wearing my thimbles. So good to see how you wear them too, it’s your way and working perfect. Thank you, helped me to feel more confident in what I’m doing too. No hoops just using a table as my wadding is a heavy wool blanket. 🇮🇪

    I just started going back to hand quilting even though my hands shake a wee bit now , I missed the peace it brings , starting small right now by doing a 4 patch square quilt , jabbed myself plenty lol , but it's peaceful as heck !

    I just now found you on RUclips and I am so grateful for you! Your work is amazing. I have wanted to hand quilt for a very long time, but I suppose I am a bit intimidated by it. Every time I've tried in the past has not worked out well. After watching you, I am definitely going to try again. I am fairly new to quilting and have been honing my piecing skills and have quilted small projects by machine with a walking foot. But I would love to master hand quilting. I've never seen anyone applique on top of the quilting...you've opened my mind to consider more "thinking outside the box." Again, your work is exceptional and I very much appreciate your sharing it with all of us. Your style is relaxed, you are easy to listen to and you are a very good teacher.

    Halelujah, this is the first time I actually understand how handquilting works. I tried it so many times and never liked the outcome, Now I understand where I went wrong. The part where you said you got to push the needle in somehow pointing backwards solved my major problem of creating stitches that were too far apart in the front but too close in the back (or good and well in the front but almost nonexistent in the back.) Thank you so much! I'm very excited to try it again with the next project.

    I prefer handquilting, but I won't say I'll never do any machine quilting again. I like using big stitch quilting with crotchet thread, or perle cotton, or even the thicker craft thread, (which must be equal to about #5 thread compared to #8 crochet threads!).
    Well, I call it big stitch quilting, but I wonder if I should call it big Thread quilting. My stitches aren't any larger than 1/4, I usually stitch 3/16 in by the time I put some in a curvy line on my quilt, and get my rhythm going.

    Thank you so much for the demo and I can’t wait to see your nails for an appliqué video. It is exactly what I needed to see. I tried Quilting without a frame and did OK but my tension wasn’t as good as it could’ve been. There’s several art quilts that I’d like to hand, Quilt and I get tired of taking My quilts to the long arm. I don’t like Price but then they’re not all mine.

I had my aha moment! I am now inspired to tackle my first project. Wishing Jae the thread, needle and masking tape. I’ll let you know how it turns out. Thank you sol much for this video. 🎉A TIP, A COMMENT AND A QUESTION🎉
    I like the masking tape idea for marking lines.
    I gasped out loud when you panned out to all 7 feet of your quilt. It is already breath taking!
    What is the rack you are using to display the quilt?
    Also, when you are hand basting, how is the quilt sandwich laid out?

    • @BrentMcGeeQuilts-ln2zy
      @BrentMcGeeQuilts-ln2zy  Год назад +2

      The masking tape has been a game changer for sure. As for the 7 feet of it all, I gasp every time I see how much is still left to do. There will be a video this week devoted to working on this quilt. I won’t be able to show you the sandwiching process because I didn’t it film back when I did it, but I will be starting another one soon, and will be filming the whole process. As for when and how I baste, it depends on the appliqué. In the case of this quilt, I dyed the background, and then immediately sandwiched and basted the design. The appliqué is on top of the quilting. So in this case the quilting is acting more like a sturdy base for all the coral. For sandwiching, I have a big 8’x4’ work surface. I lay out all three layers atop one another, then I just start at one end and work my way across and then down the length of the quilt like a type writer doing a rough baste, then I go back in and baste in my actual quilting design. I spend a good amount of time basting the design. I also turn in my edges so I don’t have a fraying quilt as I work, but also I can do my blanket stitch binding as I go as I finish sections of the quilt. Makes the piece very portable even though it’s huge. Again, a lot of explanation, but I will be showing all of this in a future video. Thanks for your comment!

    Your work is gorgeous, but do you have any other genre besides the ocean?

    • @BrentMcGeeQuilts-ln2zy
      @BrentMcGeeQuilts-ln2zy  5 месяцев назад +2

      Thank you! The ocean is an eternal fascination and obsession for me, but I also do some traditional piecing and art quilts with other subjects, which I will make videos for as well. But I would say my most “serious” time consuming quilting seems to gravitate to ocean subjects which hold my long term attention.
