  • Beach Apparatus Drill (Life-savers Reenactment) at the Old Harbor Life Saving Station, Cape Cod National Seashore, Provincetown, MA, July 18, 2024 (second part). This video shows six minutes of the later part of the reenactment. It depicts the surfmen sending out the breeches buoy along the rope (the "hawser") that has been fired to the mast of the wrecked vessel. This video (which is the second of two) shows the surfmen erecting a structure that enables the mariners to travel in the breeches buoy from the mast of the wrecked vessel over the water to safety. In historic times these structures could rescue mariners as far as 300 yards over the water. There is audio commentary explaining what the surfmen are doing. The man giving the commentary is Richard Ryder, an expert in the field.
