- Do Irons go further off the ground or the tee? #golf #distance #gapping
HAVE YOU DISTANCE GAPPED YOUR GOLF CLUBS OFF THE GROUND AND OFF THE TEE?...
I got asked the question, does the golf ball go further off the tee with irons?
This lead me to question my distance gapping?... There must be a difference in distance between hitting irons off the tee and off the ground!
Why have I never considered this with when distance gapping?
HOW MUCH DIFFERENCE in Distance is their between irons off the fairway and tee?

Like I said Gary, no idea why people tee irons up so high 😀, it makes no sense for Iron delivery, the sweet spot for irons is only a couple of grooves up not at the top of the club like it is with a wood. An iron should only be tee'd up so it looks like a stunning lie on a perfect fairway in my opinion.
I think this test should have be done outside because of that hard floor Hope to see the same test outside 👍
The pros say off a tee, when you can, is more controllable and therefore more consistent. At their level its those crucial things that make a difference
would like to see the same test done outside buddy as turf interaction could make a huge difference or none
Interesting results. I wonder if high handicappers would have more mishits off the deck?
Tried this today myself when playing a couple off par3's, both shots off the higher tee came up short.
I've always played low tees, better compression I think.
It's always good to know those differences. Par 3 that's between clubs, off a tee or off the deck can make a difference for sure.
I can’t believe I’ve played all this time and never really knew the difference.
@garymartingolf I find it can make a huge difference in launch angle as well, so my tee habits will also change depending on wind and whatnot
Great video and interesting results. Just shows, you should listen to your subscribers...and you do! Bravo Gaz!
Class again big man
Well done gaz 😊
Another great experiment video Gaz, I forgot to try a higher tee height last night when I played mate so I still don’t know what the difference will be for me, I have always teed the ball up low with my irons because for me it makes me hit down and compress the ball better
I have found the same perhaps thats why I use a green tee, maybe the small height difference off the tee keeps the gapping closer
Yeah, all I can guess, is the ball speed lower in the face is more consistent.
I use orange/green with irons as I feel they’re the lowest I can get but enough to just take the ball off the deck and especially with bad tee boxes
Interesting, now go out to the course with James and test on the grass and check back spin on the green. There has to be a big difference in taking a divot after the ball vs hitting off a mat. 🤷♀️
Very interesting I thought I hit the ball better off a tee than the ground I’m off to the range to try this 👍👍👍👍
I did 😆 I’m also going to test it outside 🤙🏼
I tee irons low in any event, just use the tee for consistent ball position. I tend to tee up immediately behind a previous divot, so teed down tight, this encourages me to squeeze the ball away, the only difference i find off the tee, is a slight left flight, which might give more distance. My teaching professional says my swing doesn’t differ, the club face data is the same, so we are confused as to why there is a very slight pull
A lie is a lie. A tee is a smooth bowl, whereas turf is a cushion. Maybe try different tees with different textures?
I'm starting to think I'm better off the ground than the tee with irons. The tee tells my dumb brain that there is more forgiveness off a tee due to the better lie, so I can swing at it harder, which, more often than not, causes me to overswing and pull the shot left. I will be IOD (iron off the deck) for the next couple of months to see if I keep getting more consistent tee-box shots. So far, so good. I have to hit irons off the ground anyway so why not just stick with it? I think if you are brand new to the sport, stick with an iron tee at the correct height. Also it saves you a step in the tee box: just toss your ball down and then hit it with some swagger since you skipped the tee, like a boss! I also did that with my 7 wood last round on a narrow fairway and just causally ripped it a very straight 227 yards down the fairway. Was the easiest tee shot of my life cuz I gave no effs, and stayed loose.
If you want to carry this further you should test how far you hit it off grass not a mat. I've found a noticeable difference in distance between the two without even considering tee use.
The mat is a big factor. It effects the club more than grass. Love your videos tho!
What do you mean? Thanks bud
Hey Gary, I just watched your video and I must say that it was really informative and well-made.
I was wondering if I could help you edit your videos and repurpose your long videos into highly engaging shorts? I can also make high CTR thumbnails for your channel
With that result it would be worth adding a green tee back in to compare also and doing the test on grass into a par 3 green?
100%. I’m going to do this test on the course in real conditions ⛳️
This is crazy cause I literally just switched to ground only. Due to bad strikes and inconsistent carry yardages off the tee. Seems like the ball doesn’t have the same strike location on the iron when teed up.
Since doing this video, so many people have said they don’t tee up Irons. Am bamboozled, I thought everyone did.
Watch out. The mat will jump the ball up before the club hits it for a slightly "heavy" strike.
"Remember there are two types of golfer.
Those who use tees and idiots" (Poorly quoted)
Needed to be outside, matts are terrible to hit off.
need some bargain sales again Gary
I’ll have a look what we’ve got.
