I bought a 2005 Powerback Gm1000 watt for 10 bucks, after learning from your videos on how to step by step try to make them work. long story short the tank hose and fuel valve were solid in nasty stuff. so I checked for spark squirted 2 stroke fuel and it ran for a few seconds!!! cleaned all that junk up including the tank, cleaned the carb, re assembled it, made a air filter changed the oil and viola it runs like a champ!!! I wanna say thank you for making this videos and inspire us viewers to do 3 things one get our hands dirty, fix something and also! keep working things away from land fills.

Love saving quality things people just throw away. My stepson worked for a bank four or five years ago. He was helping the head of bank maintenance clean out a storage room. Came across a 15 horsepower welder/generator that looked hardly used. The guy told him to throw it away, he brought it to me. It had a Briggs industrial engine. I pulled and cleaned the carburator, changed the oil and it ran fine. Used the wire welder a couple of times to make sure it worked then drained the gas, fogged the cylinders and its sat waiting for a power outage or a portable welding job to come up. Neither has, not that I'm complaining. I have a mig welder and a stick welder in my shop that gets little use anymore. This getting old can suck at times. I've scavenged things like that for years. My neighbor says I have more junk than those American pickers. Funny I guess
The gauge that shakes is the cycle gauge which should register 60 cycles per second. From the sound I can tell someone has turned up the governor speed to get more power. Problem is that increases the cycles which will burn out motors and the like. Get a hand held tachometer and look up the max output at X-RPM and turn the governor down to the correct rpm and I wager the cycles will come down to 60. It will also be considerably quieter. Honda Generators are the very best. Very expensive and I wish I owned one. I have two of those bottles and I bought them to oil my squirrel cage fan in my blower motor for my central heat and air unit. the tube makes it easy to oil the electric motors bearings. Heat and air guy told me to oil the motor every year so the bearings will last a long long time. Very interesting video I loved it.
Those little Honda generators are great. We have one of those and a battery charger strapped to a hand cart at work. We can wheel the thing out back, plug in a truck's block heater and run the charger on 10amp slow charge. Set it and forget it.

I've owned one of those EX650s for like 40 years now ; I just finished doing an almost complete tear-down because I got a larger Honda 2800W and plan to give this EX650 to my son. The EX650 is an outstanding quiet and very reliable generator.
I have owned one of these for years and years they are bomb proof glad to see ya sorted it.. Mine worked every day on a market stall for 10 years "every day" and still i use it. Better than the new ones in my opinion Toyota pick up of the generator world !!!!!!!!!!!!

Cool, I got myself an EX650 earlier this year and had to do a repair to the rotor as one of the diodes gave up so had to pull them out and replace with new (videos of the EX650 repairs are on my SanitaireC12 channel), love the thing though, so quiet and small... :)

I have one of these gens. Got it at a scrap yard for ten bucks brought it home got it up and running. Replaced the govener gear cleaned the car an a new round capacitor and works mint an very quiet. That bottle is commonly known as a zoom spout container. It's really cool you found this generator, I have the exact unit, used it to power a surround sound stereo for karaoke parties in the woods where we would have some awesome parties! That's the only hours I ever put on it. It doesn't have the gusto to even start a small fridge. I keep up on it as a classic. I'm excited to see you tear it down so if I ever had to, you can break it first. Thanks for the lesson!

Just brought back a little Onan generator a neighbor gave me 10 years ago because it quit working. Fuel lines and jets were plugged, I tried to clean out the tank but its too shallow to get anything in to it. I washed it out and cleaned the outlet pipe. there is a small screen inside the carb but I think I will look for a mini filter to put in the line from the tank to the carb so I don't have to keep clearing it. Thanks again for all the great info. It's really simple stuff {unless you don't know how it works, then it's like chinese arithmetic}. Hope you are feeling better.
I love this kind of video. It's amazing what people just throw away these days. I work at a school and just came across a fancy machine they use to paint the lines on the athletic fields. They said it's the old one that doesn't work anymore. When it wouldn't start they just went out and bought a new one (somewhere around $3000) and shoved the old one in the corner. I pulled it out, checked the spark, shot a little gas in it and it sputtered, so I tore the carb apart and cleaned out all the clogged jets, put it back together and it fired right up on the first pull and sat there idling nicely. I don't get to keep it but I definitely cemented my position as Mr. Fixit and a valued employee.
fillg - Same here. Just started in a company where my functions are not even close that. But faced with a pile of scrap tools. I had to give it go... It¨s in my blood. LOL :-) Well 6 of them are back to life and working 100%.!!! Even a compressor dumped into the scrap pile due to one (1) broken pipe! Unbelievable. :-)

epic little generator spent many nights at my friends family camp on the far side of the lake when we was kids her dad got it brand new in the late 80s haven't been up there in probably 10 years seeing this makes all sorts of crazy memories come back, he would put just enough gas to go till bed time for the parents had it to a exact science lol far as i know i can still walk up to the little shack on the side of the outhouse pull the cord a few times and it will go its hardly come out of its shack its whole life no more then carb kit and a pull cord or 2
This little Honda will power quite a bit for its size.....like half a city block ........cool vids Gary....now ive found me a gasoline squeeze bottle with hose
major score...that vent is actually the air supply to the filter box, there's no other opening when the cover is on. I think that long tube is just a drain, routed to bottom of case like you put it. I got a non-running one at an auction and cleaned it all out, soaked the carb in cleaner, etc...and started right up and works great. Japanese make great machines.

Great video I just got the same thing for 50 bucks today in excellent condition...apparently it sat in a shed for over 20 years and looks hardly used. The carb was absolutely packed with dried stuff...after trying for a long time the fuel inlet finally blew out along with a ton of debris, reassembled and it started right up.
Another good find and repair. Nice thinking on the air filter. After doing the donuts I thought for a second that you were showing us a white Ford pickup that you had run into.

Great video`s. I love watching the yard sale find video`s. I learned the same a long time ago, if an engine has spark, compression, and fuel, it will run. You inspired me to look for an old VW bug, my parents used to have a 1971 Karmangia , don`t know if I spelled that right. I learned VW`s are popular again, anyone who has one, even junk they want too much.
With small generators I find that normally it is always the carburetor that needs seeing to. With the fuel gumming the jet holes or the float valve does not work so well. If the jet is gummed up it is best to soften the gum with some carburetor cleaner but sometimes it is stubborn gum and I have to run not only compressed air but a pair of fine twisted wire to get the gun off. It is surprising how great difference a smaller jet hole will make to the petrol passage. This Honda looked like a good buy . I have a very old one with side valve engine producing about 500 watts.
Having had the same one stolen from me in Mexico a long time ago, I could tell the running RPMs were way too high... It must have been running around 70+hertz. Hell of a score! Love your videos.
I pick up every non working Honda Generator like this I find, it's called a suitcase model. 99% of them ave the same thing wrong bad gas that has fouled the carb. All I do is disassemble put the parts in the ultrasonic cleaner and reassemble and that typically is all it takes. The one you got there the EX650 cleaned up and running good can fetch upwards of $400 they are that good. The one thing you can't do is store them with gas in them. You have to run them out of gas.
Love these whisper 650s I've had mine over 25years and it runs perfect ,change the oil regularly and run it empty of petrol for periods of non use. Cheers mustie i now know how to clean n remove the carb.
Lots of folks either have no access to a small engine repair place, or have no way of finding out who does this work locally as they won't be advertising. I doubt there is any real cash in small engine repair, so I am guessing there is usually no advertising at all. What do you think Larry?

I have a bottle similar to yours that you prime carburetors with. My bottle had refined turbine oil in it. Had it for 30 years in my tool box. Very handy. 👍
AmazinChannel now you're just being silly with the it won't even turn on. i run 2 stroke bikes (street and dirt, 2010 KTM 300XCW and 1972 Yamaha RD250B) and will not hesitate to pour gallons of premix in any of my vehicles. ducati 749s fuel injected, toyota tacoma fuel injected, 69 baja bug with carb, nissan maxima injected. zero performance issues. if your engine doesn't start is is most definitely NOT due to premix. i really don't want to argue but if you insist on telling folks premix hinders performance and especially sometimes engines won't even start with premix then i will have to continue to tell you you're very simply wrong. sorry man.
Wehad a few of these same Honda's here for repairs, over filled whit oil, the clog the exaust system,, had a few here whit that problem, cleaned them out, clients happy! lol, those honda's are nice quiet sets!

amazing what some people throw away. my 12 year old son wants to become a mechanic so i do a bit like you do, buy/get cheap or free grassmowers and fix them together with him. most run just fine after carb cleaning and new plug and a service. well, he gets to learn about engines and makes some money doing so. :)
I've got one of these. Had it for years. It stiĺ works briĺiantly. You can tell how well it's been treated by looking into the exhaust box. If it's nice and white you know that It's ok.
to keep it from clogging I put a gas filter in line with the gas tank and shutoff valve. I also found out to burn all the gas in the carb when shutting down you almost shut the valve off with hitting the electric shut off switch and it will run until the gas in the carb is gone then just turn. it off the rest of the way. also you can turn the little bowl screw and the bowl will drain thru that little piece of hose.
I have a pair of tail gators. Love them, call them alpha , and beta. Only thing that went bad was a ignition coil . V power took care of my needs. Good show om
hey Mustie1, I just tried a new mixture of ultrasonic cleaner with great success. 1quart of water, a cup of vinegar, a tablespoon of dish soap and a tablespoon of salt. works great on dirty carbs. the brass jets get cleaned in minutes. try it and let me know what you think. greetings, Heiko
I'm guessing here but I would imagine your shop meter has the ability to read the frequency (Hz) of the generator head output in addition to the voltage. Just hook your meter up to the generator's 120 volt outlet, set the meter to read Hz and adjust the governor so the meter reads 61-62 Hz with no load. Nice find! and an interesting video as all yours are.
It's blower motor oil for squirrel cage bearings and electric motor bearings, you can buy at most any mechanical or refrigeration supply. i never throw the bottles away as they are very useful for many other fluids like what he's doing with his.
When I was a kid, we flew model airplanes And we had little primer bottles kinda like what you have. We squirted a little fuel in the exhaust port, hooked a 9V battery to the plug and gave the prop a flip & Rotate..Crash!
Great idea to get involved in small engine repair. I do a little but not to the level you do. I had a flooded lawnmower that I got running when we flooded in 2016.
I have a smaller bottle exactly like Mustie has - I got it with light oil in it, and it was intended to put lube into the oil reservoirs of the big (expensive) older Hunter ceiling fans. I still have two of them (fans), and the plastic bottle w/nozzle is an excellent way to add oil.
That gas bottle is a Sid Harvey's bottle from a plumbing supply house or a hvac supply house it comes with oil in it so you can oil circular pumps that are on home heating systems and to oil the motors in hot air units

I have one just like it. It burns oil so bad that after a while the low oil shut off will turn the unit off. Now that I have seen yours I might get back interested in it and see if I can replace the rings.
The SD is Sid Harvey. SH was an oil burner service, parts outfit. They probably licensed the oil bottle fro Zoom oil. The Zoom Oiler was popular to add lubricating oil to electric motors because of its telescoping spout
I have an em650 honda. it clogs frequently every year from the crappy gas we have these days. to clean the passages and jets I use guitar strings . the bottom jet in the float chamber doesn't have to be removed just run a a bare e string thru it and then the tube it connects to has a hole in it you clean with a string as well as the other jets and passages
Mustie you have rhe midas touch! I have enjoyed seeing the the last few videos seeing the trees turn gold then no leaves and now snow. I am in Australia and we have just had a week of 90+ degrees. A bit of coolth would be nice!
Still a kid at heart I see, out doing some snownuts, LOL. The local Fast&Furious ricer club had the same idea. Gotta say the yuuuge rear spoiler made that ricer rig much more epic and look way, way faster

I've got a couple of spark testers one I use the most is an Actron inductive type with LEDS that show how much voltage the coil is putting out. It's way easier to just clamp around the wire much faster too. I think I got from advance years ago it would be good for when your out yard saleing to see if there is a spark.

most kids dont turn a wrench anymore but work a computer at age 5, so its a dying trade for sure.

Great video`s. I love watching the yard sale find video`s. I learned the same a long time ago, if an engine has spark, compression, and fuel, it will run. You inspired me to look for an old VW bug, my parents used to have a 1971 Karmangia , don`t know if I spelled that right. I learned VW`s are popular again, anyone who has one, even junk they want too much.
With small generators I find that normally it is always the carburetor that needs seeing to. With the fuel gumming the jet holes or the float valve does not work so well. If the jet is gummed up it is best to soften the gum with some carburetor cleaner but sometimes it is stubborn gum and I have to run not only compressed air but a pair of fine twisted wire to get the gun off. It is surprising how great difference a smaller jet hole will make to the petrol passage. This Honda looked like a good buy . I have a very old one with side valve engine producing about 500 watts.
Having had the same one stolen from me in Mexico a long time ago, I could tell the running RPMs were way too high... It must have been running around 70+hertz. Hell of a score! Love your videos.
I pick up every non working Honda Generator like this I find, it's called a suitcase model. 99% of them ave the same thing wrong bad gas that has fouled the carb. All I do is disassemble put the parts in the ultrasonic cleaner and reassemble and that typically is all it takes. The one you got there the EX650 cleaned up and running good can fetch upwards of $400 they are that good. The one thing you can't do is store them with gas in them. You have to run them out of gas.

I have a 5 hp gokart so I like to watch things about small engines.
Love these whisper 650s I've had mine over 25years and it runs perfect ,change the oil regularly and run it empty of petrol for periods of non use. Cheers mustie i now know how to clean n remove the carb.

Lots of folks either have no access to a small engine repair place, or have no way of finding out who does this work locally as they won't be advertising. I doubt there is any real cash in small engine repair, so I am guessing there is usually no advertising at all. What do you think Larry?

I have a bottle similar to yours that you prime carburetors with. My bottle had refined turbine oil in it. Had it for 30 years in my tool box. Very handy. 👍
running 2 stroke gas in a 4 stroke engine wont hurt it, a little upper lubrication is good, on an unknown engine :D

now you're just being silly with the it won't even turn on. i run 2 stroke bikes (street and dirt, 2010 KTM 300XCW and 1972 Yamaha RD250B) and will not hesitate to pour gallons of premix in any of my vehicles. ducati 749s fuel injected, toyota tacoma fuel injected, 69 baja bug with carb, nissan maxima injected. zero performance issues. if your engine doesn't start is is most definitely NOT due to premix. i really don't want to argue but if you insist on telling folks premix hinders performance and especially sometimes engines won't even start with premix then i will have to continue to tell you you're very simply wrong. sorry man.
it will however multiply carbon build-up or 'sut' in the carburetor

Wehad a few of these same Honda's here for repairs, over filled whit oil, the clog the exaust system,, had a few here whit that problem, cleaned them out, clients happy! lol, those honda's are nice quiet sets!

amazing what some people throw away. my 12 year old son wants to become a mechanic so i do a bit like you do, buy/get cheap or free grassmowers and fix them together with him. most run just fine after carb cleaning and new plug and a service. well, he gets to learn about engines and makes some money doing so. :)

Good video. A friend got an EX000 for free that wouldn't stay runing. I cleaned the jet and it's perfect. Amazing what people throw away.
I've got one of these. Had it for years. It stiĺ works briĺiantly. You can tell how well it's been treated by looking into the exhaust box. If it's nice and white you know that It's ok.
to keep it from clogging I put a gas filter in line with the gas tank and shutoff valve. I also found out to burn all the gas in the carb when shutting down you almost shut the valve off with hitting the electric shut off switch and it will run until the gas in the carb is gone then just turn. it off the rest of the way. also you can turn the little bowl screw and the bowl will drain thru that little piece of hose.
Wish I could find scrap like you do!

One type of bottle is a Zoom spout oiler. Used alot in the HVAC field to oil the motor on the squirrel cage fan

i have fixed a few gens myself, i use a kill-a-watt meter to check the voltage and hertz.

hey Mustie1, I just tried a new mixture of ultrasonic cleaner with great success. 1quart of water, a cup of vinegar, a tablespoon of dish soap and a tablespoon of salt. works great on dirty carbs. the brass jets get cleaned in minutes. try it and let me know what you think. greetings, Heiko

I'm guessing here but I would imagine your shop meter has the ability to read the frequency (Hz) of the generator head output in addition to the voltage. Just hook your meter up to the generator's 120 volt outlet, set the meter to read Hz and adjust the governor so the meter reads 61-62 Hz with no load. Nice find! and an interesting video as all yours are.

It's blower motor oil for squirrel cage bearings and electric motor bearings, you can buy at most any mechanical or refrigeration supply. i never throw the bottles away as they are very useful for many other fluids like what he's doing with his.
When I was a kid, we flew model airplanes And we had little primer bottles kinda like what you have. We squirted a little fuel in the exhaust port, hooked a 9V battery to the plug and gave the prop a flip & Rotate..Crash!

Great idea to get involved in small engine repair. I do a little but not to the level you do. I had a flooded lawnmower that I got running when we flooded in 2016.
I have a smaller bottle exactly like Mustie has - I got it with light oil in it, and it was intended to put lube into the oil reservoirs of the big (expensive) older Hunter ceiling fans. I still have two of them (fans), and the plastic bottle w/nozzle is an excellent way to add oil.

That gas bottle is a Sid Harvey's bottle from a plumbing supply house or a hvac supply house it comes with oil in it so you can oil circular pumps that are on home heating systems and to oil the motors in hot air units
all this stuff is happy memories for me I loved fixing stuff like this but can no longer do it due to my wifes illness taking up all my time now...

I have one just like it. It burns oil so bad that after a while the low oil shut off will turn the unit off. Now that I have seen yours I might get back interested in it and see if I can replace the rings.
That main jet looks like a Holley carb jets. Funny to see that in a Honda.

They probably licensed the oil bottle fro Zoom oil.
The Zoom Oiler was popular to add lubricating oil to electric motors because of its telescoping spout
I have an em650 honda. it clogs frequently every year from the crappy gas we have these days. to clean the passages and jets I use guitar strings . the bottom jet in the float chamber doesn't have to be removed just run a a bare e string thru it and then the tube it connects to has a hole in it you clean with a string as well as the other jets and passages
Mustie you have rhe midas touch! I have enjoyed seeing the the last few videos seeing the trees turn gold then no leaves and now snow. I am in Australia and we have just had a week of 90+ degrees. A bit of coolth would be nice!
Still a kid at heart I see, out doing some snownuts, LOL. The local Fast&Furious ricer club had the same idea. Gotta say the yuuuge rear spoiler made that ricer rig much more epic and look way, way faster

I've got a couple of spark testers one I use the most is an Actron inductive type with LEDS that show how much voltage the coil is putting out. It's way easier to just clamp around the wire much faster too. I think I got from advance years ago it would be good for when your out yard saleing to see if there is a spark.
