Keep up with these types of videos! Current events are important but I’m so burned out after the last two years- this stuff feels so much more helpful.
Completely agree! Love this stuff Bjorn!
Absolutely..!
Completely agree, these videos help bring me back to a place of peace, motivates me to get out in my local country park and be with nature.
Sometimes you forget how beneficial being out in nature can be, and then you think "why did I stop coming outside for so long?" Haha
Agreed!
I deleted all social media many years ago, and have been bouncing the idea around to get rid of my smartphone as well. I am 28, and have been told by so many people “but you need it to stay connected with the world”. I disagree, I think it’s the opposite in a way. People are glued to the things and not actually “living”. I connect with the world by spending time in nature. That’s how life is supposed to be in my opinion.
people who walk around with their heads down stating at a light think they are connected to the worlD? its laughable. you do not even know what the world looks like. you cannot even see it right in front of you anymore.
Thank you.
You are on youtube... Thats social media...
Great for you to know this at such a young age! Blessings to you
@@daviecrocket9160 yes youtube is social media, i wish they removed accounts, reccomendation feature, and subscribe feature sonit would not be social media anymore
I am old enough to remember life without cell phones. We got along fine. Life was great. We are sold so many things that we really can live well without. Most of the things in my house I really do not need. I think people who go camping and backpacking totally understand this.
i saw when cell phones came along and all their features, people got less work done
Same here.
Im 34 and remember it.
I remember... no cell phone and no computer haha the good old times.
Camper, and cross country cycling ,no need for smart phones ,in many ways they make things worse
Bjorn: "Most people are not as busy as they pretend to be" this is absolute truth! 👌🏻
Agreed... It strokes their ego, receiving all those "important" emails/texts/calls that only they can answer....and of course, their answer requires an answer...ad infinitum.
Exactly, they are just distracted like a child that sits and watches cartoons in front of a TV.
I have a friend that starts every conversation with "I'm so busy." - All I can think of is "That's your choice." Frankly I don't buy it.
Absolute truth, even studying and searching for jobs I find myself having lots of spare time.
Sorry... Can't help myself. Isn't all truth absolute?
Recently, I watched an old recording of over 30 years ago of my Sister's sweet sixteen party. Many family and friends showed up to church, then to the hall celebration. Not one person had a phone. It was so beautiful to watch everyone in the moment and truly engaged with one another celebrating Life, Family, and Friends.
How wonderful!
Had many family parties in the present and no phones.
I miss family gatherings like that. Now everything a joke to them.
Lovely memories of real life x
I like taking photos using a really old digital camera, but the old paper photos are so much better and totally private and or secure for prosperity.
It would be great if everyone gave up smartphones. Technology is ruining the world. Too much control.
I like my smartphone. I have a long way to go to use this contraption. I want to rule it instead of it ruling me.
I agree! The world has declined rapidly ever since they've been here.
The other thing that you like me should throw out is the tv set. I threw my tv set out back in 2008 and dont miss tv at all now.
@@markfoley8582 Me too. Since 1979.
The internet is the main culprit.
No Facebook anymore, no Instagram. No mobile internet connection. Most apps deleted. Only RUclips and some Music left. After one week of addictive behavior it became better. Now, I don't miss it. The smartphone lies in the corner the most time of the day. Results: I feel relaxed, no stress and I go to sleep between 10 and 11pm instead of scrolling till late night. Life is way much better when we stop to be zombified.
You are so right! My anxiety level has all but gone sense I got rid of my smartphone about a year ago. I'm old enough to remember not having a cell phone and having a pager. LOL to me I've been trying to get back to a simpler way of life the way it was when I was a kid growing up!!
@@bigpappa642 Yeah, that's absolutely right. The old days, without 24/7 access to the world wide web. Not always only a phone call or an message away. There were time I was out with my little boy and I always had my phone in my hand. I was physically out with him but mentally I was everywhere but not in the present moment. And now? I enjoy time in the woods with my son, or at the playground or anywhere else. Only he, myself and our time. Or when we out with the whole family. I think it's much more enjoyable to let the phone away. I even doesn't wear a watch anymore. Reducing to a simpler life is the best way to become healthy. Of course, I use the modern comfort of technique too. Music, Movies, Games. But I use the multimedia instead of being used by them. Anything has its healthy dose and its right time ❤️
@@Ravntor so right, my Daughter is 16 now and even she has learned that leaving Her phone in her car when we get out together. She would much rather be riding her horse or in a deer stand even just laying in a hammock next to the pond watching her rod n real!! But I guess it's my fault ever sense she's been big enough to sit up in a saddled she's been on a horse and started hunting with me by the time she was 8. I've always tried to teach her that nature can provide everything we need if we just pay attention to the things around us. But as a 16 year old young lady I do make sure that when she's not with me that she does keep her phone on her at all times in case of an emergency or in the case I need to JUST hear her voice to make sure she's ok. Being a single Father I've tried my best to teach her common sense and to keep her eyes open to everything around her and stay away from anything that doesn't LOOK or FEEL RIGHT!!! Unfortunately it also means I'm a bit over protective, she had a guy friend who ran up to behind her in the middle of Wal-Mart and grabbed her from behind while we where walking through there and before I realized it I had reached and pulled my pistol out from my holster and she knew exactly what I was doing and had to quickly grab my arm and sat Daddy he's a friend!! Poor boy almost pissed HIMSELF and started apologizing. LOL So now all of the boys in our small rural area know that her dad will go crazy on anyone who thinks of hurting her. But it comes with being single Father and my 20 years in the Air Force as a P.J team Sgt in the Special Forces Community..
Even if you have a phone and use it a lot during the day it's best to never take it in the bedroom)))

My husband and I might be the only 2 Americans without a smart phone, for 5 years! We stepped away from cell phones and live our lives just fine, for work, social life, whatever. We don't want to live our lives with smart phones. Our friends are stunned. Thank you, Bjorn, for being part of reality. We love living this way.
I thought we were.

I never had one and will never get one.. I always knew they are used for evil. My husband doesn't have one either..we don't even have "dumb" phones. Glad to know others don't have them either People should throw them away and that would change the world for the better
We don't have any cell phones and will never get them. It depresses me seeing everyone everywhere glued to them like zombies. Every time we pull up next to cars on the road, they are on their phones staring at them. I feel like I don't belong in society, like I'm an outcast or something. Sad times we now are forced to live in. I miss the pre-cell phone days so badly.
I've never had a smartphone, and I got off social media 4 years ago. The one sad thing is that I've lost friends because of it. People just don't seem to want to stay in touch through simple emails or phonecalls (and certainly not letters!) anymore. But still I'm glad to not be part of all that. I've noticed that people involved in smart phones/social media seem to be losing their ability to think for themselves, but there's no way to convince them of that. It's very sad.
You're spot on! No one thinks anymore... only are told what to think.
@@shellcshells2902 Yes, and it's been chilling watch people just go along without questioning.
I was invited to my daughters cabin with 4 of her friends. They spent all their time that day on their smart phones, while my daughter and I went fishing. I have been addicted to my smartphone: 3-4 hours use a day. I decided this has to stop, so I bought myself a Nokia dumbphone (with WhatsApp for communication) 4 months ago. It definitely changed my life for the better! I’m much more present now.

I can remember a time with a rotary phone, no call waiting, no voicemail. We survived and were happy. I have never had a smart phone, I waste enough time on the laptop!
When I was a kid only one family in our neighbourhood (in a small village) had a house phone, it was one of those bakelite dial phones! There were red public phone boxes if people needed to make phone calls!
@@amandaduggan9051 As I have become an old man, I realize all this technology just keeps us at a distance from each other, it separates us from life and our meaning.

I had a rotary phone in my first year as a student in my dorm room. If we wanted to call outside lines we had to inform the operator of the dorm. 😅 we could ask for a morning wake up call also😂.
I only get inconvenienced by those SMS verification moments. Otherwise, never wanted for one. My last mobile phone was a flip phone. So glad you did this Bjorn! As far as the rest you: if that Covid passport tracking crap didn't make you uneasy about your mobile phone leash, I don't know what else will.

It's truly amazing that people complain about the price of things and even homeless people panhandling on the streets have smartphones..
Amazing...! there must be some sort of super glue on these phones as they are stuck to peoples hand

I've never owned a "smart" phone, always had a 'hello-goodbye' phone, aka "dumb" phone.
It's priceless the look I always get from somebody when asked, with a hint of desperation.."dude, where's your phone"!
I use a smartphone for work because I have to. When I'm not at work, it stays off. I think the most psychologically damaging thing in the past decade(s) was cutting off in-person interactions and the second most damaging one was not letting oneself take time off and enjoy nature. Great video.
It is not the technology but how you use it.
@@daviddanielstephenson2833 It's both.
Smartphone and social media addiction is a very real thing that most people have, but they don't even know it or want to admit it. One of the trends that I have observed with people is that they use their smartphone as some kind of ''adult pacifier'' to avoid uncomfortable settings or situations where they are shy. Instead of actually looking at the people around them and talking with them, they hide themselves behind their phones, staring down into their phones. And I have also noticed with both friends and family when having them over, that when having a conversation with them, instead of actually looking at the people and being engaged in the conversation, they rather have their smartphone up to their nose, scrolling through things on their phones. That kind of body language tells me that ''being on your phone'' is more important for them than being in my company, in the here and now, engaged and focused on the conversation.
Howdy Bjorn from BC,Canada: love that mention of Soi Dog as I am supporting the effort to ease the cruel way our canine companions are suffering in China , Korea, and other places in the world. Your show is so inspiring and informative, keep on hiking.
Calgary, Alberta, animals everywhere need protection.
I didn't have any SM during my PhD. Now also I don't have. Everyone asked me how do you manage, I simply told them "I just dont need to have any distraction". Last week (after thinking a lot), I switched to Nokia 110 2G. My office colleagues didn't believe that I am serious about this. I again told them I don't need anything especially smartphone. I support your efforts.
It's amazing how often people just stare at me blankly when I tell them I do not carry a smartphone. And, yeah, it's annoying that I am expected to carry one if I want to know when my restaurant table opens or my brother comes out of surgery or something like that. These businesses and services seem to have nothing in place anymore that they can use to contact me.
I said to a passer by the other day, good morning, and they looked down into their phone without answering, my next words were, everything but the kitchen sink without a reply, then carried on walking.
Ironic how I listen to this good advice and testimony on a smartphone...
Such wisdom. The last two years have made me rethink what my priorities in life should be. I've never been fundamentally chained to my smartphone, but I find myself wishing to discontinue owning one.
they are a trap why else give them out for free and get rid of all pay phones?
I loved this video! I am always on my phone watching videos. The thing with not having one is you won’t know what is going on around you and around the world. I don’t own a computer and don’t want one. I remember growing up with only one tv and it never caused any problems. Everyone got to watch what they wanted. Originally had only one phone in kitchen but for convenience got one for basement for when my mom was doing laundry. Everyone has a smartphone, Kids, teenagers, adults. I feel like we are missing out on what life and nature has to offer. I have my dads flip phone. I’ve been tempted to go to phone store to see if I can get it hooked up. I want to get away from the smart phone. I love that you always go out n nature. It’s so beautiful and magical. Thank you Bjorn for bringing that to me. I wish things would go back to how I remember. It seemed it was a slower pace. God Bless you Bjorn. There is still hope.🙏🏻🥰❤️
A Tv is a series of given avenues, you can only tune into what is on offer, the internet is quite the opposite when used in moderation and can be used for ones own benefit, if one so chooses, to deny anyone of things invaluable is like being parsimonious with the truth.
I'm completely on board with you on this. I've even disabled my vehicles gps system.... Google doesn't need to always know where I'm at.
My vehicle is so old, no GPS.
My little flip phone fell into a glass of iced tea. Was devastated.
Now I have 10 year old smart phone but it's pretty dumb, compared to the few humans I choose to interact with.
My twenty year old motorbike has no technology unless I take my phone with me, I use the old style smart phone where you can remove the battery still, new ones you cannot do this and are not truly off but in stand by.
It's been more than a year since I left my smartphone and entirely switched to the brick phone. A lot of my friends and family disconnected with me after that, even when I gave them my email and they know my number. A lot opt for convenience as well over staying connected. Surprisingly, a handful of unexpected people reached over email and we have meaningful conversation now and then. Life's so much lighter and wholesome than when having a smartphone. Bjorn, your videos are also a factor into helping me make this switch, so thank you!
They werent your friends anyway. if they cant pick up a phone and dial your number to stay in touch then you know your value to them. Better to learn it now than when you think they have your back.

But at this time it’s where I get all my news that I can choose to watch or not stay safe my friend
Yes, I don't have wifi either so I use my phone as my main computer, plus as a hotspot when needed, for example, when watching a film on my laptop, I don't own a TV. I also use it for international calls via Telegram, something I couldn't do with a simpler phone. The camera is useful too. I use flight mode often to cut myself off completely, don't set the location tracker on and will never load any tracking apps.
I remember seeing a news report a few days ago about how people in their 20s are ditching smartphones for brick phones to enable a relief from anxiety. It is supposedly a growing trend in some big cities.
In the big cities there used to be public phones everywhere, contacting anyone was a doddle, like parking meters today.

Its all I have and I'm surviving just fine.
People seem to forget that their smartphone belongs to them, not vice versa and not to anyone else. There's no obligation to use it, there's no requirement to answer it, it's just a potentially very useful device. I use mine for a variety of things but I don't use social media at all, don't always take it with me and often go days/weeks without using it.
Big tech doesn't need you to "answer it". It's a device to data farm YOU - people are the new cotton. Where you go,, what you buy, what you read... all for sale to advertisers and marketers. If we applied these standards to a bookstore of 40 years ago, the equivalent would be a clerk checking your id when entering, then following you around the store with a clipboard taking notes on every book you picked up [and for how long] along with what you did buy. After that, your name & address gets sold to those on lists having declared interest in specific books so they can do their own marketing.
Turning off data sharing? In some cases, the manufacturer collects even MORE data - it caches and posts later, instead of feeding real time. I cannot recall the demand origins for even 10% of what they do. Altimiter? Nobody asked for those etc. Think about these devices in a ww2 setting for example: mere posession would garner espionage charges. That... should make us do some thinking about need vs want, perhaps?
@@flinch622 That's not because of the technology, that's because too many people don't care about their privacy at the moment. Heck, not only do they not care, they actively throw it away - constantly using certain Big Tech companies because it's convenient & popular, even though they're infamous for selling data, personalised ads, etc. Talking to some members of younger generations, they just don't seem to understand why privacy is something they might want to care about. There are things you can do to mitigate a lot of this invasiveness but so few even think about it, let alone make any effort
The scary thing is, the smartphone doesnt belong to them, it belongs to Apple, microsoft, et al.
The smart phone is not the problem, it is who controls the avenues we use with it.
That’s because it’s a drug. It’s addictive. You can say that people seem to forget that your body belongs to you and not a certain drug, but people still use the drugs because it’s addictive.
"Until we have begun to go without them, we fail to realize how unnecessary many things are. We’ve been using them not because we needed them but because we had them."

Tranquility of mind has never been that important at this point in my life living in this strange upside down world and constantly getting bombarded with nonsense. Still having a smartphone, but only for managing my finance and the necessary contacts. I've banned most of social media and regular television for many years. It is so good to stop and to live in the moment. Really enjoyed your video and reading the comments. Thank you, Bjorn.
I still have my original Nokia 3310. Some 18 months ago, like Bjorn, I decided to bring it back to use and ditch a smartphone. Closed all my social media accounts except for YT, which I mostly watched on a PC or laptop anyway. The only thing I miss occasionally is convenience of WhatsApp to communicate with my children faster, but not having it is more of a nuisance for them than for me. I also went back to writing notes, letters and greeting cards by hand, doing basic calculations on paper or in mind, and remembering phone numbers, just to exercise my brain and cognitive capabilities. My adult children think I'm going nuts, and regressing as I'm getting old. They can't understand how a PhD engineer can consciously choose to live that way. Sad thing is, I have more energy, physical strength and stamina now in my 60s than my IT-career preoccupied, sedentary, take-out eating children in their 30s.
That is how I felt without a computer for 6 years. I didn't miss it and I felt much better.

@@pchlaszachrajka666 Don't need a smart phone for RUclips. Plus you can more easily avoid political drama by watching other things you enjoy like Bjorn, instead of everyone you know posting drama and BS on your feed 24/7
@@pchlaszachrajka666 The same system throughout, same way of paying folks with the feel good factor, IE, donations, because you like what you hear but do not practice it for real.
I deleted all social media last September, (8 months ago) with the exception of RUclips. This has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in regards to personal well-being. It’s funny I ran across this video as I have been kicking around the idea of going back to a dumb phone like I had back in 2004. Thanks Bjorn, I love your videos!
I don't have a phone as well. If people could see how dumb they look and addicted. They are always staring at an 8 inch square. They are watching sports through a tiny hold in phone. They can't interact during a movie or dinner or anything! Its charming you mentally and physically not to mention tracking your movements. It's taking pictures of you when you dont even know it through your phone and cameras. It's very sad.
It's a good feeling to live without a smartphone, you look at the world instead of a phone!
You just contradicted yourself, the entire world is at your finger tips with a smart phone, why waste one of the most valuable tools ever made because you think it makes you feel good and or control your mind, and then have to tune into the same W's3 to interact.
I don't have one and everything is ok. No TV either, since 1999.
You are not alone. I also got rid of my smartphone, the freedom and quietness is just awesome. Blessed be.
It's wonderful seeing you outdoors, and living as man is supposed to live. In areas where I sometimes am in my state, not having a signal is a blessing. As you say, you are present and evaluating the terrain, trees, and even potential dangers around you. The sun, and your natural ability to navigate.
I did give up a lot of applications this last year, but kept the phone. Mostly I like using it for a clock, and alarm. Email is too full to even work.
Hi Bjorn, i've just subbed . You inspire me in many ways. I notice that you talk and think in a relaxed, slow, measured way. You allow yourself to pause. I notice everyone with smartfones are so impatient, talk so fast, expect replies too fast i almost feel choked up. I'm fed up with it. And as you say the surveillance issues are shocking, offensive, intrusive. And the constant blocking i have to do of unwanted calls etc. I'm so glad for you, embracing a more natural life.
Safety is my main concern as a female. (Roll my eyes). Such a never-ending worry. 😊🌄👍💙
Reject smartphone, return to life 💪
The same life is still there with one.
My wife and I are going off grid as soon as we're able. I will not miss people, progress or phones. Thanks for your video and cal demeanor
What will you do when you need the things you cannot make in house that come from the on grid paradigm.
@@daviddanielstephenson2833 hopefully by then I will be prepared for that. I grew up in maine with grandparents born in the early 1900's that taught us all how to make stuff at home for example candles, sausage, processing your own animals, wild edibles you can forage like dandelion greens, fiddleheads etc. Whatever I don't have we'll have to learn to live without. Her saying was use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without. I also spent 4 years in the Army, trained as an EMT and grew up in outward bound. I'm more comfortable in a wilderness setting than I am in any city
@@francisbennett5965 I am of a similar ilk, a man from the land and capable of making many things in house, shoes, boots, rebuild engines and many more, however many are devoid of these real life skills that are needed.
Some have enough money to throw at projects like this and make lots of money doing it on the internet which has become their only bussiness as the world begins to slow down.
What I am saying is, what if that window of oppertunity is closed or is taxed in such a way as they loose over half of their energy doing things this way, basically they are back to square one again and also denied a true voice.
This is how many will end up, without a true voice and without a way of making what they could if they were true off grid minded.
@@daviddanielstephenson2833 unfortunately we then go to the Darwin theory. Only the strongest and most prepared survive. I know this sounds harsh but what We're our friends and peers doing when we were learning these skills? My friends were drinking and having babies way to young. Not my fault. I have known the big bad one was coming for a while and made decisions based on that knowledge. Now my son is a united States Marine who I may never see again. He was told he can't come home for Christmas and to get his life insurance updated. Kind of scary. But I taught both my kids how to be prepared and how to survive. It now rests on them as it does for all mankind. The best way to describe it is the cite mouse and the country mouse story. As horrible as it sounds only the strong and prepared will survive what's coming. I can go without my cell phone indefinitely if necessary but can our youth?
@@francisbennett5965 I don't buy the Darwin MO, I opt for the smartest to survive not the strongest.
I too did several years in the military and learned a whole bunch of medicl skills that have already saved several lives my young son for one.
Being prepared is only one factor, being skilled is another, and knowing how to use them together is the key.
If the inevitable does happen and the minds of men loose their composure it is those real life skills that will eneable the individual to thrive.
There is also an old Yorkshire saying by a highly skilled cabinet maker, it many be a living making furniture with a mouse carved on it, but we are still as poor as church mice.
The MO of not having a cell phone is a mere distraction in the fulness of time, I say use it for ones own benefit, don't hide away from it and lose out the value it is capable of bringing to the trained observer.
All we can do as adults is teach our children well, crosby steel and Nash.
I have no phone at all at the age of 26, by choice, been like 2 years since i've had one. I've never felt this free.
Hope the world didn’t brought you back
I do have an iPhone, but I hardly use it. Except to sending a message to my two grown kids. More often than not I’ll walk out without it.
We try to live our lives the way others think we should. This makes us uncomfortable and unhappy. So live your life the way you want to live it and ignore the others.
First I love your RUclips CHANNEL. I do agree with you that we as a society are way to much involved with our smart phones but(ALWAYS HAS TO BE A BUT)!
I am 77 years old and now bed ridden because of a broken leg that never mended correctly. I have been a Amateur Radio Operator (HAM) for over 40 years. So communication is in my blood. My smartphone allows me to turn on lights, fans, televisions adjust the thermostat for cooling and heating and even open the front door for me while in bed. I feel that a smartphone allows me to post my opinions on social media (which probably makes no never mine to anyone but myself). I believe that these social media platforms are the new TOWN SQUARES of today.
But I don’t like the censorship that most employ. So thanks for letting me share my views with you and others and please keep up your wonderful videos I really look forward to them. May GOD bless you and your family and I pray for WORLD PEACE instead of war🙏
PS I LOVE YOUR VIKING MAN CAVE👍And I look forward to reading your novels…for some reason I think of you as a modern day Earnest Hemingway who is one of my favorite authors.
I've been going out now for 2 years leaving my smartphone at home. It's amazing how much more you get to be in your own thoughts without one. The smartphone is all about dopamine hits, and it's a great feeling to leave all that to one side. I think desktop computers are better. It gives you a bit of leeway.
We don't have any cell phones and never will. In fact, I despise them with a passion. We also don't use any wifi devices or wireless internet. Everything we do is wired since wireless is bad for human health.
I feel ya brother, im about done with my smart phone as well. Its like a bad drug filling you with hate!
I never had a smartphone... and I barely ever use my old phone. Never needed it and will NEVER NEED IT!
A wonderful post Bjorn! Just signed the petition for English publication of your novels!
I've never felt a need or purpose of one of those telephones, and I'm 85 this month. I find them annoying and insanly expensive. I do enjoy your swell videos!
That sounds amazing Bjorn! I imagine that there are many reasons that we choose to carry a smartphone. For me, it is the only access that I have to the web. So I always have it nearby when I want to something with it. I have no social media other than YT.
However, I maintain digital discipline and some privacy via airplane mode and data on/off. I realize that a smartphone, even when off, is still recording sound, movement, nearby towers, etc for logging metadata.
However, as I see it the Spirit is watching the watchers as well. They have no monopoly on that! 👍
Great video. Being 'present' can't be understated. It is really important. I personally really dislike social media like Facebook and Instagram. I think these places are just toxic for thee mind so I've quit Facebook for good, never been on that other site. I have not thrown away my smartphone however, I really do appreciate GPS and Spotify. But I am all for limiting the usage or even completely getting rid of the thing. People are zombified and sometimes even wound up to do some terrible things becausee of the over usage of social media, which is very easy to do with a computer in one's pocket.
I saw a comment under a video which showed just some street views in NY year 1988. I quote "I feel the late 80's to early 00's was a golden time. A good mix of technology without compromising human interaction." I feel like the guy really hit a nail there.
I went most of my life without a smart phone. It is possible. The new generation have no idea what life is without one. It’s sad.
I have no cellphone at all. My son is 7 and he wont have one until he is able to pay for one himself.
Nah my life before having a smartphone was actually really great and 14 years old.
@@derceral2682 I was 14 back in 1974 and life was a blast, now I am 64 and much better with my smart phone.

Smartphones are really like having a Middleman (a very slippery one at that) involved in every moment of your life constantly Spying on you. It doesn't make you more connected. It makes you more Dependent & Distracted.
Well done Bjorn.
Not true, simply remove battery and only use it when needed on your travells, the battery last way longer doing this.
Technology is not our friend, the internet is not our friend. The cheese in the rat trap is free for a reason. Keep up the Good work.
I've never had a smartphone but when I flew to Narvik, in your country, a few years ago , and then took the train to Abisko in Sweden, I learnt that there are in fact several disadvantages to not having a smartphone for a traveller in your part of the world. One of these was not being able to book train tickets in northern Sweden and consequently having to pay more for a ticket bought from the conductor on the train ( though only in theory thanks to an Anglophile conductor who gave me a cheaper ticket than everyone else and free coffee and sandwiches, Tusen takk Kristian) But I'm with you Bjorn. I still have no intention of getting a smartphone.
That's how it's done. Connecting, personally.
Good job, great comment.
I used to be so productive. I had the first Android phone the G1 and have been glued to one ever since. It has stolen 15 years of my life and potential. I am turning it off. It's like electric crack.

I’m 30 and a first child on the way. Not using social media for 4-5 years. Had a smartphone until last week. It was few weeks ago and my fiancée mentioned upgrading since the phones are a bit over 3 years old. While scrolling for phones, I realised I don’t need one and told to myself, you know what, I don’t need one. So got rid of it and I bought my favourite phone ever, a Motorola V3, like 30 pounds on eBay. Doesn’t have any internet, just call, text (barely do it, more of a call guy and not fussed to type since takes forever), calendar, time and alarm. That is enough for me. I don’t scroll stuff when I wake up or before bed, I don’t randomly take it out of my pocket to check literally nothing, more productive. For maps I use a car GPS, for anything else like researching something or emailing or news I open my pc in weekend while have a coffee.
Won’t ever return to a smartphone, is not for everyone but if you try it you won’t regret it, trust me.
I remember growing up without cell phones, and we had to remember phone numbers growing up, was pretty easy. The only things I use my smart phone is for video shoot picture taking, minor photography, and business. Only app I have installed is a stock market ticker, otherwise my phone is not often used.
I have also been without a smartphone for almost 1.5 years. I'm more productive, I sleep better, my emotions stabilized, I read SO MUCH MORE my memory has drastically improved, and I feel more.......ME! I take little trips with my pup and we watch the world spiral into confusion with their face locked into a little screen. I used to open my phone and just randomly scroll until i found something interesting. Now I open a book to random page and the same thing happens, try it! Your brain and soul will thank you.
You give me strength. Thank you Bjorn.
I only ever got a smartphone because I moved across the Atlantic and wanted to stay in touch with my family. That was about 5 years ago and I'm now thinking about ways to go back to what I had then. Problem now is I might have to uproot again, with my wife and two kids this time, and possibly switch countries. All while trying to do something here on RUclips. A smartphone makes some of those things a lot easier.
But, I guess the main thing is I have no social media presence, and that's definitely huge. Talk about an algorithmic swamp, eathing away at whatever feeble ability you have left to just be, without that urge to distract yourself from your immediate surroundings. I miss the old days.
I’m waiting for my last smart phone to die…then no more.
I have only had this one and when it dies- RIP I use it to keep in contact with the taxi service. I have a PC to do my online business. And guess what - I turn things OFF!
I just got back on using a smartphone after going one month without it. I don’t have a computer, so it’s sadly my main device to the world. With work and all. I loved not using it again, just having silence and not feeling chained to it with notifications and all that crap.
If you work in IT, you are expected to use the tools of the trade. No addiction necessary. It’s still up to you what you do or don’t do with a smartphone. Some people also refuse to use credit cards or order stuff online. It’s also a generational thing, as you get older you don’t care about these things and you tend to focus on what matters to you. There is nothing wrong with that, it’s just part of being human. Live and let live.
Yes, exactly! Porn and murder are necessities, that are now becoming a reality.
Through augmwnted realities of course!;)
In 2011, I had no smartphone, no computer, and no wifi. It reached the point that I couldn't conduct lifes business without a wifi connections. I forced myself to acclimate to technology. I got a laptop, a wifi connection, and a smartphone. I could live without the smartphone. But wifi is necessary. Many companies will not do business with me without establishing an online account.
Never had one and i love tech. Once i seen after a couple of years of observing others with them , the complete addiction to them, i knew i would never get one. People got by just fine (as in much better) before these devices came out.
As with anything in life though if you do have one balance is key. Use it only if you need it for something not to distract yourself.
My opinion on smartdevices of any kind is that it is NOT doing anything good 4 you, young kids grow up with this shit, and dont know what it means to be a human with a fantasy, play outdoors, think 4 themselves. This ediction 2 "smart" stuff is only making humans into robots.

I only had a smartphone for 2 years when I got it because I loved the camera. When the contract ended, I took out the SIM card. I use it only at home when I watch TV just in my living room and only take it on longer trips (in case I need 911) and it travels in a Faraday bag. It isn't utilized as a cell phone anymore. I know they can still track, so I turn off location and use a VPN. I also use my browser to check my FB and not the app. Cellphones are the DEVIL! I will never get another!

People can be addicted to many things: food, monthly pay, games/tv shows, nicotine... But the the worst addiction in the world is comfort.
Nobody wants to feel cold, try a strict diet, exercise hard and regularly. They want to click a button and have all their needs satisfied.
But all growth happens with discomfort. Our society has made everybody soft and weak.
Woa, has Bjorn lost weight ? Great message here on smartphones btw I have fallen addicted many times with things like reddit and youtube on the phone. I try to keep it somewhere and walk away from it so I don't get distracted all the time.

How you do that, when do you do that? Do you sit in a specific office and go through information you want to follow up on, like all the politics, topics you talk about on your channels, or research fir your books, or friends you got and like to see how it is going for?
where, when. How and by what device do you do all that Björn?
