Sikhs are devout to their faith not their institutions. SGPC has failed the community and has done nothing about rampant conversions. Instead, SGPC choses to legitimize Bhindrawale.

Centralizing a religion is always a bad idea. SGPC was bound to fail. However, you should not be hasty in judging Bhindranwale. You should read his full history. I know he did many bad things but even at its peak, Punjabi Hindus did not suffer like the Kashmiri Pandits. Bhindranwale was a product of Congress. The INC created him to dim the rise of Akalis. It was also during the era of some the dirtiest politics orchestrated by Congress against Punjab and particularly Sikhs. India was hosting Asian Games at that time and Sikhs were humiliated and searched on Punjab-Delhi road. Congress did not follow through on promises made to Punjab. Bhindranwale became a symbol of resilience against Delhi's oppression.

    • @libshastra
      @libshastra 6 месяцев назад +27

@@sankalp6872Every revolutionary chose to give up their life rather than sacrifice others lives. Bhindrawale, deliberately chose to sacrifice others lives rather than his own. He was a terrorist that the Congress incubated and SGPC choses to legitimize him despite his terrorism. No amount of “oppression” can justify the rampant Anti-Hinduism Bhindrawale was spewing especially in Vancouver, Canada.

    • @sankalp6872
      @sankalp6872 6 месяцев назад +9

@@libshastra I take your point and I agree that there is no "justification" for Bhindranwale's act. The man was a terrorist. I do not sympathize with the "legend". However, I have a problem with the fact that the Punjab insurgency ends with a full stop on Bhindranwale. Congress was his partner in crime. In fact, he was their "Frankenstein's monster". This should be added to the "legend" of Bhindranwale. Congress should NOT get a free pass over this. Only a selective narrative is paddled over Bhindranwale because it suits his followers and absolves Congress of its role in the insurgency.

I really appreciate the fact that the British and Nehru didn't establish an SGPC-like organization for Hindus. Decentralization is the only reason, Hinduism is now progressing. Caste as an identity might remain but the negatives aspects like discrimination are likely to dissipate over the next few decades. Economics+Migration+Urbanization+inter caste marriages have really blurred the caste lines.

British definitely did try to centralize Hinduism (HRCE), heck even Hindus tried it (Arya and Brahmo Samaj etc.). They all failed because each time, they excluded the most devout abandoned their own community.

I will hazard a guess. BJP was a minority party dependent on NDA partners for its survival in the Lok Sabha. Politicians of Shiromani Akali Dal had a great influence and in the true sense of tail wagging the dog, they got Vajpayee government to issue notifications that helped SAD and SGPC such that both became more inter-dependent and both had greater influence over politics of Punjab. In state assembly, BJP was just riding piggy back on SAD support and helped in diverting urban Hindu votes to the SAD-BJP alliance. SAD-BJP alliances turned Punjab into a den of short-sighted corrupt politicians and land of drug runners. No industry prospered. People of Punjab, disappointed by their elected leaders, tried Congress, which continued to disappoint. There being no traditional alternative, people of Punjab are presently experimenting with AAP. Let us see if there is hope yet for Punjab. So to answer your question, self interest and short-sightedness has pushed Sikh electorate away from SAD and BJP.

    Sikhs are an enigma !.
Congress under Indira Gandhi desecrated the holiest of the holy shrines yet they Voted and continue to vote and support the Congress.
Sikhs were massacred by the Congress goons in 1984 in Delhi and elsewhere in the country..
Yet the Sikhs in Punjab and across the country vote for the Congress.
Sikhs are the most close knit religious group in India, yet a large number of them convert to christianity ; the largest conversions amongst any religious group !
Sikhs are much more liberal, and have the concept of equality and brotherhood built in within the religion, yet there are a sizeable number of SC Sikhs amongst the community and who feel as aliensted as other SCs feel amongst Hindus in general, if not more !
Sikhs as a community loved Indian Punjab, (particularly after they lost West Punjab to Muslims and Pakistan after Bharat was partitioned in 1947 and Lahore and Nankana Sahab were lost to Pakistan) the most amongst other religious groups loved their areas of concentration.
Yet we see the immigration out of Punjab to other States and abroad is highest amongst them !
Sikhs are the most patriotic community among all other communities in Bharat, yet the separatist tendency for a separate State of Khalistan is the highest amongst this nationalist group !
Punjab and the Sikhs were, and still are, amongst the most prosperous states in India, yet inequalities and grievances amongst them against the system are highest in India ?

DAO wins nothing else. learn from Hindus. Christianity particularly church based and its attendance has declined sharply in western countries. Once Modernisation comes to Islamic countries same will follow. DAO wins (Decentralized Autonomous Organization). Thats why Hinduism will win.
Have multiple strands, multiple gurus, no 1 entity to control. Each guru is authority onto himself. Yes there will be decline and change in purity of pratices and the best will emerge but ur overall faith will win

    • @akhiljames8807

That is quite a big generalization. DAO wins only if DAO has a supporting central political power to control the chaos. There is no growth without centralization. Hindus have been late in this business i would say. Hinduism is in vogue because of BJP which is a centralized political power holding authority. Take out BJP and then your theory of DAO will collapse.

Jat or khatri sikhs. Even Sikhs had large land holdings, big business so lower caste Sikhs were well accomodated. But After 1947, state patronize and wealth of Sikhs declined. In 1960s , 1970s due to mechanised farming SC Sikh labour become unemployable and dependence of lower and upper caste declined resulted in more caste discrimination in Sikhism. Even Govt of India, sponsored Deras like Radha swami, Ram Rahim Sacha Sauda, Nirankaris, Namdharis, Nanaksaris etc at least 2 thousand Deras so Sikh population is further divided.
Christianity is increasing in Punjab especially Dalit/ majhabi/chamar Sikhs as gurudwaras don't accommodate them. Neither given them entrance to community kitchen to cook, yes they can eat langar but not cook in many village gurudwaras nor gurudwara gave utensils to dalit Sikhs for family function as Gurudwara manager jats think that these lower caste Sikhs will not return their utensils back😅. Christianity is taking advantage of that, Christian missionaries provide free education health care to dalit Sikh and Hindu Punjabis, even if main bread winner dies, last rituals r performed by Christian missionaries along with widow children receive monthly allowance.
Only thing I am not able to understand that from where money is coming. All the foreign aid to India, I think is diverted into such missionaries work.
I also feel that Higher caste Sikhs should understand seriousness of situation and act responsibly.

It is a phase all religions have their ups and downs. Religions reinvent themselves as an organic living organisms.
Hinduism has three different categories like Bhakti movement of Kabir Mira adi shankara chariya when it was loosing ground to Islam, Brahminiculture helped Hinduism rediscovered and overthrow Buddhist kingdoms in India while Tantaric Hinduism/ tuna totka/ kala jado also helped adhiwasi lower caste Hindus to organise as they can't pay heavy tributes to Brahmins for Puja archana. But over the time, Hinduism keep evolving now it has 100s of different dimension. One Hinduism form is Nirgun Nirankar that oppose idols like Arya samaj while other do idolatry. Swami Narayan is almost become seperate religion along with Lingayas and Nagas in South India who don't think they r Hindus anymore.
      Similarly, Sikhs will evolve
Rich educated will have course correction in Sikhism.

First i would like to appreciate Shekhar Gupta and his team for fact based reporting on issue of Punjab and likewise appreciation for those who have put their thoughts in comment section. In these days, comment sections are full of abuses and cut- paste messgaes except of the print.
Many have criticised SGPC for not defending Sikh religion and being indifferent to religious conversion and validate Bhindrwale as a Saint.
Though they are right in their assertion however problem is far more complex and nunaced.
    1. First, we should not forget that SGPC is controlled by a political party i.e. Akali Dal and like every other political party, their prime goal is survival and getting into power. So if there is overwhelming concern regarding conversion in sikh community they would be forced to react on it willingly or unwillingly. However in Punjab , there is no real apprehension regarding conversion to christianity in Sikh community.
    2. What is the reason behind having no concern for conversion in sikh comminity? To explain it, we have to delve into caste equation of sikh community in Punjab. Jatt sikhs are at least half of population of Sikhs in Punjab and their dominance may be felt everwhere in Punjab. Traditionally , they were land owner and filled ranks of British Army. Being loyal supporter of British, they managed to get hold of Gurudwaras. ( By Gurudwara prabhandhak Act) . After formation of Punjab in 1966, they are able to dominate Punjab politics. Thier dominance may also be felt in cultural spehere like Music ( most of songs have Jatt reference), movies etc. Caste system is prevalent in sikhism though sikh scripts says otherwise and Jatt Sikh consider themselves superior to sikhs belonging to Schedule caste.
So sikh political, religious and cultural elite ( most of them are jatt sikh) dont consider SC sikh as their own and they are not bothered much if they leave the religion. One more aspect is important that christian preachers in punjab have modelled themselves according to dera cultute so for a average Punjabi, they dont seem so different. Hitherto, Christian are unable to form as political bloc so political parties are not so worried.
    3. As far as SGPC/Akali Dal's soft approach towards khalistan issue is concerned , again it is catering to its vote bank. The analysts are wrong to say that there is no taker of khalistan in Punjab. However the truth is that there is considerable population of Jatt Sikh who have sympathetic approach towards khalistan issue. Victory of Simarnjeet Singh Mann in Sangrur bypoll is evidence of it and mark my work, Amriptal Singh will also win from Khadoor Sahib. So instead of seeing SGPC as a villain, i see it as a saviour who hitherto able to kept khalistani issue in check through democratic means. This is the reason that every separtist like Akali dal ( Maan) or Amritpal Singh keep abusing Badal family.

Add to it the economy doing very badly in the past 25 years. Punjab slipping from no. 1 to no. 13 in the per capita income state ranking of large states. And a big belief of the leading Punjabi thinkers and trader community that the closing of trade ties with Pakistan is one of the major factors behind it. Probably rightly so. And not getting any support from the Modi Govt on that front. This is the linchpin that can popularize Modi in the Punjab Politics but they feel he won't do it as it doesn't suit his politics in the UP-Bihar areas.

@@ThePrintIndia I would like to bring a very important point in light - Improving ties with Pakistan for the benefit of a small state like Punjab is the last thing Modi govt would want to pursue. And you can't blame him, at the end of the day getting elected is the foremost important thing for any politician. But he also can't live with the fact that he lost 2 elections in Punjab. Until the Pakistan option is out of the question, He is using Hindu polarisation in Punjab as well to see if he can galvanize the Hindu votes in city dominated Constituencies like - Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Mohali etc. you should try to cover the work that is being done by ABVP and the way student organizations like ABVP are promoting his narrative in the college campuses like - DAV College Jalandhar, Chandigarh. The thing he and BJP are not realizing is that by doing so he is igniting a fire that has horrible consequences in the past. Something that was extinguished in 90s with the efforts of Congress, Akali and BJP combined. And it is indeed very dangerous. The dominant division of Pendu and Shehri (urban or rural) in the college campuses is transferring into a Hindu/Sikh divide.
