- 3-07-1996. Refurbished and extended gm from a dozen yrs back, the audio on the prior version was turrible. Important game history wise for containing Magic's 10,000th assist. On 3/07/96, he was still only the second player ever to reach the 10,000 reg season assist mark. He retired in 1991 with the record of 9921, after breaking Oscar Robertson's previous record of 9887. Magic added 220 more during his 1996 comeback to end up with 10141 total. That number reflects both the early retirement and that he also split point guard duties for 4 seasons w/ another true point (Norm Nixon) who averaged about 8 apg himself.

It was a fortunate thing that Mag overtook Oscar in the 78th game of his final full season of 1991 against DAL at The Forum or he never would've reached #1. As it was, Stockton eventually took the #1 spot in 1995, but had Magic failed to reach #1 in 91, Stockton alone would've simply overtaken Oscar instead of Oscar and THEN Magic. Magic's FINAL, final 10,141 tally shows how much those 4.5 years meant towards the stat race. I think had he never contracted HIV that he would've played until the 93/4 season and maaaaybe the 94/5 season or part of it. The 94 Lakers were depressing enough tho that they might've encouraged him to retire in 94. Either way, he missed out on 3 or more seasons of 10-12 assists a game. That's a 12,000 figure. Спорт
I really miss NBA basketball from the 90's 😢😭💗🏀🏀🏆
hard to believe 1996 was almost 30 years ago . Unreal
Really is
Nice to see young Brian Grant here, NPZ. I always liked him. He played hard, and he played tough. He didn't have a good year in LA, but it makes more sense now. He said he would feel weak on his left side and not be able to jump off his left leg, and team docs said it was normal NBA wear and tear. Of course, it turned out he had Parkinson's. God bless him.
I always liked him too. His basketball cards used to be worth a few dollars in his early years for some reason.
I watch the NCAA tourney and wish the NBA was like that, former NBA fan here but like the old videos of what the NBA used to be like.
No, Kobe era muy egoísta y en su afán de imitar a Jordan iba a irrespetar a Magic.
Magic con Ceballos, Jones y Van Exel jugo bien en 1996.
This is beautiful, NPZ.
A clean intro indeed Jason! A lot of the fun watching these vintage Laker videos is listening to Chickie call the game! He will always be missed.
Fun story, or maybe not about this game. I was a senior in high school, and I had skipped several days of school leading up to this game. My dad bought tickets to this game, knowing the Lakers are my favorite team, and Magic was my favorite player of all time. I had never seen him play live and assumed this would be my only chance.
As luck would have it, the school called him this day to inform him that I'd missed several days. The first thing he told me was we weren't going to the game that night, devastating me. Looking back, and even then, I knew it was my fault. I was so pissed. Blew my only chance to see the legend in person.
I remember being excited that I'd be able to see his 10,000th assist, too. Still irritates me that I fcked it up. Good to see the Lakers won the game, though. I couldn't remember if they did or not.
For someone who had been out of the NBA 4 and a half years, Magic looked amazing. He was older, slower and heavier but his playmaker and instincts were still intact.
Lucas, would you agree with me that Magic at point guard is the clearest winner of any “best player at his position” contest in NBA history? Mike and Karl have far more competition at the 2 and 4 respectively than Magic has at point guard.
@@DavoBirmingham2 I would say so. Mike is a clear #1, but the gap between him and Kobe is smaller than the gap between Magic and Stockton? Oscar? Karl Malone and Tim Duncan is debatable. KG is up there too for me @ 4.
@@lucashenderson2775 that’s exactly it. I never got to watch Oscar, but his crowning achievement is averaging a triple-double when teams routinely took 115 shots a game. As for Stockton, he was never the best player on his team, never even averaged 18 ppg, and was a playoff let-down in the earlier years. I think Nash and Kidd have a better claim at the No. 2 spot than Stockton, and they clearly weren’t fit to lace Earv’s Converse Weapons. He is in a class of his own.
@@DavoBirmingham2 Yeah, Kidd was special.
Magic Johnson was a great player.
The fastest guy to 10,000 assists in NBA history.
AND,…that is with 5 YEARS out of the game due to forced early retirement in 1991
Yes...and think of where the assist number would be had he never retired...also, when he retired, it took years for John Stockton to catch him and pass him
@@randybutler1697 Magic would have had 18k maybe 20k all-time. But Kobe and Shaq probably dont go to LA if he stayed.
That Elden Campbell interview was so awkward 😆
That was a clean intro by Chick!
It's strange to see Vlade in this arena playing for another team.
mitch richmond great player
Magic would have obliterated the assist record the way Barry Sanders would have shattered the all-time rushing record, if both did not retire early.
Also, It's a shame that Mitch Richmond wasted his prime with that sorry Sacramento franchise, in which this (95-96) was the ONLY year during his tenure there, that they made the playoffs, barely scooting in as an 8th seed, only to be quickly bounced out in 4 games to the Sonics. Sucks that the overrated Don Nelson traded him away from an emerging playoff Golden State squad, abruptly ending "Run TMC" in 91. Should have come as no surprise that he would play a role in another HOF caliber player being traded right after making the playoffs, 3 years later.
Love seeing your input, Phil. Richmond really does seem one of those players who was far more than a good stats, bad team guy. Whenever I see footage of him, he makes winning plays. The shooting, the post-ups drawing double teams, the inexcessive usage rate. Not a true superstar, but a tough matchup for any team (just ask Mike). He just never had any help in his prime. Let's be real, his best teammates were Brian Grant and Olden Polynice and he got this team to the playoffs. That's some feat. Are you telling me if you switched him in for Reggie on the '90s Pacers squads they would do any worse? I highly doubt it.
@@DavoBirmingham2 if Richmond could only be with the Kings from 1999-2004 he would be that piece that gets them over the hump. 2002 should have been that year, I'm not going into conspiracies, because I think the Lakers did legitimately win it, although I wouldn't be surprised if silver's NBA is rigged.
Curious if you have any highlights from the kings vs Lakers 11/24/95 and 1-3-97? Thanks in advance

39:37 The free throw swish in real time adds some authenticity to the ball going in the basket via instant replay.
1:38 - Chick going with the V-neck jumper as well as the suit jacket, a combo that can only be pulled off by a man of his brilliant stature. Stu, not so stylish.
Stu is stylin’ too! And his barber did what he could with what was left of his hairline too 😂
Imagine if Magic had stayed 1 more year to play with Shaq and Kobe.
Booby Hurley looked great, too bad his career was cut short by a car accident… poor guy
Do you have 95 dec 13, Lakers@Pistons, Van Exel 30pts vs Hunter ?
No.
@@DavoBirmingham2 Do i know you ? Am i talking to you ? here is the proper use of no Davo
Watch your mouth talking to Davo like that you silly little prick.
@@adebolabloke8691 😆😂
@@adebolabloke8691 haha, don’t worry about him, AB. He’s just another harmless ignorant teen who doesn’t understand, appreciate or deserve access to NPZ’s greatness.
1:47 - Sacramento.

@@swissbeats2k Dude, just stop
They got Kobe the season after this right? Would have loved to see kobe and magic play together
Yeah this was the '95-96 season so this wasn't the year Kobe played but the 96 '97 season instead but yeah that would have been cool if magic played with Kobe just one year
The Point Man
Magic was stat padding…😂
