Never cut the leaves from flowering bulbs, they are the "food" source for the bulbs for next years blooms. You should allow the leaves to shrivel up entirely by either leaving them in situ or by carefully digging up the whole shebang and then storing in a dry place until the leaves have dried....the dried and duly fortified bulbs can then be replanted in the autumn.

Instead of no mow May, we just have a patch at the back of the garden that doesn't get mowed at all. I'm like you, I literally go around the garden with the back of brush sweeping through all the grass before I mow it to shoo any animals away

  • @claireangier3322

I was watching an English youguber he has a nature channel. He was saying there's no point to no mow May, unless you stop mowing altogether.
The reason being you stop mowing for the month the insects and pollinators set up home just to be mowed down come the start of June, just a thought.❤

Yes, the no mow May is allowing them the freedom for the month but then is destroyed when you finally do mow and their habitats are ruined that they've just settled in to! I think it's worse to not mow for the month and then ruin it all for them by mowing it all down vs mowing and them using their instincts and finding a place that is going to work for their survival in the long run. It's like a cruel trick on them!

Give your hydrangeas just a bit more time. Also too, you can rake in a few tablespoons of Epson salts into the soil and water a lot. Oh, and while you were talking about your bulbs, the outfit you were wearing gave off such a lovely "Land Girl" vibe (you know from WW2). Gardening is a learning curve---for life:)

Oh yes! I'm not fond of the PR practices in general with RUclipsrs, but actually seeing the items being used would be better instead of just opening them and showing them off as gifted items. Sometimes things aren't needed no matter if they're free to you or not and it seems to be wasteful imo, but to each their own! I understand some just want these items to be able to say they have them from x company, etc.

If we did no mow May, we'd need a tractor to hay the lawn in June. I mowed last week, and even though I set the mower deck to lower than usual, it didn't cut most of the dandelions and creeping Charlie and wild strawberries. A few days later and it looks like I didn't even mow! The pollinators are happy, and we can use the lawn.

Edit: watching you tour the flower beds now and i see the gutter down pipes are flowing into these beds. It would maybe be wise to get an extender on the end of these pipes to divert the huge flow of water from the gutters washing these beds out. You might be struggling to keep this soil nutrient rich bc of the overvlow of water running through the soil. Also, feeding the plants is probably necessary at this point too since the beds overflow often. Just a few thoughts.
Don't you have gutters on the house above these beds? Do the down pipes from them flow into these beds causing them to overflow with water? Just trying to think it through too. The granite pieces as edging look good! I hope it helps but if there's a reason they're flooding (other than just rain), it may be worth looking into.
Also, hydrangeas don't like the heat from the afternoon sun usually. They typically thrive with "partial sun" from ideally the morning sun. Idk if that helps at all but good info, even though I'm sure you already know this! Ha!

No leave the leaves it will let the bulbs refresh, once they are dry cut them back and place in paper bag. plant in early November and place them were they will get sun and the parfait idea is that the size of the bulb indicates the depth so largest deeper and the tiniest closest to the top. i'd be inclined to plant 3 or 4 types together to cover the waining bulbs! There seems to be bittersweet vine in with your Jasmine, I wonder if they are competing for light and water?!
