I got mine about 15 years ago. Two years ago I divided it into two plants. They are always flowerig together at the exact same days. Its so fun! This summer they produced multiple flowers at multiple times. I just love this plant
Now that I started to get into the more scientific part of plant knowledge I am shocked to get to know that many things we commonly call "cactus" are actually not cacti at all. I would never in a million years guess that this plant is in the same family as hoyas, I would totally just guess they would be in the Cactaceae family :O
LOL well what's going to blow your mind then is that technically the genus Stapelia, Orbea, Huernia,...etc. are all now Genus Ceropegia due to genetics
They’re related to Hoya??! Woah, I’d have never guessed! I’ve been completely obsessed with stapelia and huernia recently, I’ve been on the look out (they’re available where I am, it’s just hard to come by them 😔🤷🏼♀️), so far out of luck haha. I actually remembered that when I was more knew to plants (couple years ago?) and didn’t really know much yet, I bought one at a market (super cheap!!), put it in a much too small pot, low light, and overwatered it 😭😭💀I literally can’t believe myself! Anyway, I’m super excited to start again when I can! 😌💞🌱✨ Edit: I have now amassed a collection of 7 plants all up (3 huernia, 2 stapelia and 2 orbea)! They're going beautifully :)
Another great video to learn...☺️😍 All this time, i thought it was kind of cacti or succulent...mine started in one stem, & today it's like 15-18 stems. 3 weeks ago 3 flowers bloomed one by one & it's totally a huge flower though...it's bigger than my palm... Now i'm proud to say that i have a hoya in my house! 🤗
The video was worded incorrectly, it doesn't belong to the Hoya family as stated in the video, instead it belong to the same family and subfamily as Hoyas do (Family: Apocynaceae "Dogbane", subfamily: Asclepiadaceae "Milkweed family"). A small but important difference ;) And yes it is considered as a succulent
One of my favorites is Stapelia flavopurpurea :) love the little star shaped blooms plus they smell like honey, one of the rare Stapelias that actually smells nice haha But much more tricky to grow for me than grandiflora, I tried grandiflora once and it is much more robust I have to say :)
I bought both of my stapelia for the flowers and fell in love with their fuzziness. I’ll also mention I got both of my plants as beat up single stem cuttings and they rooted and grew into established plants within the first year and I even had buds (they blasted when I forgot to bring them inside in time last winter)
I do love this plant, I have quite a few but I nearly burst out laughing when you said the flowers are beautiful coz when I posted pictures of my blooms on IG, it was because I was horrified at how they look and the response to the pictures were the same ...friends said it looks like armpit hairs , some said it looked like Demogorgon HAHAHAHAHA! And another friend showed me pictures of her bloom that had attracted maggots, yes maggots. 😂
Well it doesn't really attract maggots, it attracts flies due to the carrion smell the flowers give off and they lay eggs on the flowers where then the maggots hatch from. In the ends the maggots will die because their parents had been fooled by nature in thinking there is food for their offspring where there is none.
Awesome, I could tell by the way you were touching this plant that it must be so velvety, I love plants that are soft to the touch. Still loving this series, I found a succulent today that was not labeled and it is super cool, I might have to post a picture of it on Instagram and see if anyone can identify it for me. Thanks Summer, have a great day and I will see you tomorrow.
Omg before me and my famly moved I used to have one and let me tell you it was huge and the flowers are so unique and butaful I wish I kept it it's on my wishlist now
Thank you. I always struggled with Ascleps. I think I water too little. Mine just don't thrive although many of my plants are 10+ years in my care. I mean, plus point is, I haven't killed them yet. But I'd love to see them thriving a bit more.
Mine is out on the patio here in Central Mexico in full afternoon sun. It just recently bloomed with 10 flowers all a once. The flowers were probably 4 to 5 inches across and boy do they draw the flies.
Great information and they are pretty plants. I have one that is blooming right now but I thought my dog or bunny killed something. Pretty flower but it smells horrible. 😂🤣☺️😘
I got some cutting from my friend last month and I planted in the soil. I don't see any roots, but when I touch this plant, it feels very soft and some part of this plant is brown. So I need your help or advice what am I doing wrong and what should I fix it? I had water it but not so much. Thank you.
Nadjahar, thank you, that’s a relief! I’m all for the “weird” plants, but my husband wasn’t too happy when I ordered a plant that’s supposed to smell like rotting meat. Glad to know it won’t stink up the whole house! 😂
I think there are varieties or hybrids, some don't smell at all and I've heard some who have to either cut the flower off or put it outside (they attract flies though, actually the point of the death smell). I just got a little cutling in the mail today too! The seller says this one only smells if you stand next to it.
the video was worded incorrectly, it´s not in the Hoya family instead it is in the same family as Hoyas, a subtle but important difference. The similarities are seen in the reproductive flower parts and also the seed pods and seeds
Hi, I’m having a problem with my stapelia. This year it had many buds but one by one they all died. Can somebody give me some ideias of what’s happening?!
It’s been a month, how did it go? I live in south Texas and it’s over 102, just bought one yesterday and have it in a shaded porch with morning sun. Wondering if the temp will be too much
My dad has hundreds of stapelias growing in his succulent balcony. Stunning plant. He gave me a bunch too and I'm loving them!
Rebecca, how many colors of flowers have you or your dad seen?

"The flowers are to die for." Ironically they smell like someone actually died for them.
MrLyvik its not that bad at all
Oh, but it does though
They really don't smell at all in my experience
this is a very interesting plant, cant wait to see this in my nursery, (I can't wait to touch this plant), thanks for the video Summer.
The red tips mean that the stems are growing

Thank you for highlighting this genus!

Some of my favorite plants☺️
Didn’t know they were in the same family as another favorite
great video! Picked up one of these today -- never had seen it before and so excited to add it to my collection! maybe even it would be happy inside!
Love this succulent! 🌞
The flowers are so pretty and different from other plants 🌿

I really want to get into these and their close relatives. I love the stems. They are so unique. Thanks for the video. Love your channel.

I suppose this is where "beauty in the eye of the beholder" comes in!! haha!

Mine just has a half open bud right now, but I've waited a long time for this.
Omg before me and my famly moved I used to have one and let me tell you it was huge and the flowers are so unique and butaful I wish I kept it it's on my wishlist now
I have one of these and they look so cool like a Kracken coming out of the dirt.

I just bought my first one!!!!💝💝💝💝

Great information and they are pretty plants. I have one that is blooming right now but I thought my dog or bunny killed something. Pretty flower but it smells horrible. 😂🤣☺️😘
Very beautiful succulent thanks for sharing
I wrote the name of this down. Hope to get one some day!🌿👍🌿I googled and the pictures showed some of the flowers bigger than your hand 😲!

my mom had these in her garden when i was growing up.
I heard that, this plant can makes herbal?
Thanks for sharing 👍🏻🙏🙏
I’m so glad you uploaded this, because I literally have one showing up in the mail any minute now!
How strong is the fragrance of the blooms?
Mine only smells if you come really close with your nose!
Nadjahar, thank you, that’s a relief! I’m all for the “weird” plants, but my husband wasn’t too happy when I ordered a plant that’s supposed to smell like rotting meat. Glad to know it won’t stink up the whole house! 😂

Cool. How can there be so many and SO different Hoyas?
it's not a Hoya, from the same Family but not same Genus so not a Hoya.
the video was worded incorrectly, it´s not in the Hoya family instead it is in the same family as Hoyas, a subtle but important difference.
The similarities are seen in the reproductive flower parts and also the seed pods and seeds
I was planning on buying a oil cactus and saw one of these fuzzy guys... guess which one I got lol
So since its in the hoya family can I use orchid spray as a fertilizer on it?
This plant is so easy and fast to grow. Mine gets full afternoon sun.
Will this thrive in an East facing porch? Morning sun afternoon shade?
Hi, I’m having a problem with my stapelia. This year it had many buds but one by one they all died. Can somebody give me some ideias of what’s happening?!
i have stapelia n video in my chanel

It’s been a month, how did it go? I live in south Texas and it’s over 102, just bought one yesterday and have it in a shaded porch with morning sun. Wondering if the temp will be too much
Sorry to say, bot mine is cooler. Love this video❤️
My stapelias refuse to flower 😓
Looks like a cactus tho xx
we use to just call these cacti,
This looks more like a stapelia leendertziae not a grandiflora.
The flower of that plant is so🤣🤣🤣🤣 😆😆😆😆😆 hahaaaaah
