was it 417 drive? or did it get measured on the hole as he did cut a big chunk of the corner. if the hole was straight then it would not acheive that distance. having said it was a well controlled drive but i dont think it was 417.
it was a 603 yard par 5, but since he went straight at it/cut the dog leg, he made it into a 489 yard par 5. It was around 417 drive, I measured it on google maps. 489 - 72 = 417

Pete Dye designed it and I believe he’s still alive. BDC’s drive is all about high risk - high reward. Besides, the pond is a hazard that dares the player to play safe or bite off as much as one thinks they can chew. And BDC has screwed up a fair number of holes bombing drives like this cuz at these speeds, if it’s bad, it’s really bad.

In Long Driving, you can still win even if you hit the fairway only once in 6 shots. With his club head speed and the wind direction, 50/50 on it landing some place on that line he can even get a decent hit on it for his next shot, and 25% chance anywhere in the fairway. The US is so far ahead now that even if he whiffed that drive the outcome would likely be the same. Choosing a driver off the tee and going for it was a no brainer.

It was 417 yards straight from tee. It's a 600 yard par 5 with 70 yards 2nd shot left so you can work it out...
