I will never forget that race. I was fortunate enough to see the greatest racehorse of all time in his final race. Drove up from Cleveland to see him. My God what a great memory. There are hardly words to describe Secretariat. Simply, the best ever.
Kennedy Road was no slouch either and was on his home race course in defeat. Face it folks, Big Red did just about it all whether dirt, turf, 7F or a mile and a half. Horses like that come around about every 50 years or so. Finishing 2nd to Secretariat may seem like a loss to some but if I owned Kennedy Road I would have been proud of his performance.
Between "moving like a great machine" (the Belmont) and "there he goes, there he goes" (Canadian International) I can not think of a more exciting, fantastic performance of courage, spirit and heart than what Secretariat showed to all of us. Thanks for the memories, Big Red..
Although you can barely hear it because of the crowd noise, the announcer had one of the all time greatest lines - 'He's in the stretch in a blaze of glory'.
TOTALLY APPROPRIATE...SECRETARIAT DOIN' HIS OWN THING...."IN A BLAZE OF GLORY". THE ONLY RACE HORSE 🏇 IN HISTORY ...THAT WHEN I WATCHED HIS LEGS COVERING GROUND..."ESPECIALLY IN THE BELMONT....HIS LEGS TURNED INTO A BLUR. I COULD SEE THE OTHER RACE 🐎 HORSES LEGS AS THEY RAN . BUT, SECRETARIAT WAS PHENOMENAL....HE WAS AIRBORNE. THANKS FOR THIS TRIBUTE LAST RACE VIDEO. ❤ GOD BLESS ALL FANS & RACE 🐎 HORSES, OWNERS, TRAINERS, AND JOCKEYS...WHO HELP MAKE HORSE 🐎 RACING WELL WORTH WATCHING. LOVE AND PRAYERS.
The same thing happened to Kennedy Road in this race as it did to Sham in the Belmont. They both tried to outrun the greatest race horse of all time it was just impossible
0'58s walking with style alongside his exercice trainer, he saw something and stop! ears goes up, the red light is somewhere, his majesty has to pose... at 1'14, you see why he make a stop. yep the red ligth is for him.. what a genius beautiful smart animal. BIG RED thanks for your legacy, fly high
What A Monumental Life-Long Memory For Myself, All Woodbine Attendees, Canadians And The World Who Were Graced With Seeing, Secretariat Run His Last Race. We Saw The Greatest Horse Of All Time. I Will Never Forget That Day In 1973. Thank You Penny Chenery For Sharing History With Us.
It’s like Pegasus taking off into the air. He soars like eagles. To me he is perfection. He is mind boggling, awe inspiring, astounding, and I cry whenever I watch the videos.
My God I love this!! "THERE he goes.. Penny moves forward in seat, roar of crowd increases, and when the camera ZOOMS in on bleacher crowd AT SAME TIME as that guy stands up and lunges forward, wow!
I love the Belmont the announcer says 28 Lanks and still charging, this horse was three years old and was said the feeder been a four-year-old he'd even been faster he never did reach his full potential what A magnificent horse
❤ IT'S LIKE SECRETARIAT WAS JUST WAITING TO TAKE THE LEAD.....I BELEIVE HE COULD OF DONE ANOTHER BELMONT LEAD.....MAYBE HE JUST WANTED TO PLAY WITH THE OTHER HORSES 🐎 IN THIS RACE . STILL HE FINISHED EXTREMELY WELL ❤. THANKS FOR SHARING THIS EPIC SECRETARIAT'S LAST RACE. GOD BLESS. LOVE AND PRAYERS.
What a call by the announcer....."and the crowd is cheering because this is his last race....he's into the stretch in a blaze of glory-Secretariat, ladies and gentlemen he's all yours and he's coming to the wire........
He was just kind of coasting along, not really trying too hard, then Maple asked him to run and in the space of a furlong or so he was ten lengths in front. There'll never be another like him.
YEAH, I BELIEVE "BIG RED" AKA: "SECRETARIAT" KNEW THE CROWD WAS CHEERING FOR HIM......WINNERS KNOW WHEN THEY ARE WINNING. ❤ HE WAS ALL HEART AND LEGS....AND NEAR PERFECT...OF ANY RACEHORSE IN KNOWN HISTORY. HE MADE ME WISH I COULD OF BECAME A JOCKEY. YET, JUST CHEERING HIM ON WAS AWESOME TOO.❤ MAY HE" RUN IN PARADISE "....AND TEACH FUTURE RACE 🐎 FROM HEAVEN TO 🌎 EARTH. GOD BLESS. LOVE&PRAYERS.
@Tazzy5 Well said, I agree - Sec was a better athlete/strategist than Maple - It's a shame R turcotte couldn't run Sec in this final race; it would have been a stellar ending. Turcotte & Secretariat understood each other - A Great Team!
He had an ancestor who was called the Big Train! I was surprised to discover Secretariat had Man O War relations! Sö tomorrow can Big Brown who has our Dancer as a gg sire win the triple crown? We sure could use something good! I was 11 when I watched Northern Dancer win the derby and preakness and we all cried about the Belmont. Smarty Jones too made us cry. History we hope is with us tomorrow.
are you kidding me last race greatest horse ever and this is the best video an absolute disgrace!! please woodbine forward the complete race and great call by daryl wells rip
In this final race, Secretariat ran the longest distance of his life: 1+5/8 miles. On grass, no less - a surface that was still new to him. WHAT A MARVEL HE WAS!
The closest for many years now, would have to be considered Zenyatta. Undefeated from 7 furlongs to 10 furlongs. On dirt and synthetics. She hasn't ever raced on Turf, but I suspect that as good as she's been on synthetics, that she'd be dynamite on Turf as well. JMO.
gfn02, around 3:26 it does look like he was whipped. He did not flash it in front of Red's eye, he went for his bum. I can see where that person is coming from.
Why you would make it personal in the first place is beyond me. You too have my information and could have simply messaged me. I had no intention of making it personal. I just wanted to point out to you I could see how people would think he was whipped.
Ahh! Some words of sense starz. I don't know what the hullaboo is all about. Of course I know carly's little comments can get under one's skin. If I had my copy of Ray Woolf's book out I'd find the passage which says Turcotte talked at length with Eddie Maple before race and surely Eddie knew he didn't have to whip this horse. I agree w/you. I've watched this race over many times and never thought I saw him whip S. Looks like was just exhuberant heading for finish and nothing was bothering Sec
I don't believe Kennedy Road came in second place here good buddy. It was Big Spruce 2nd & Golden Don 3rd. Where Kennedy Road finished I don't know.(smile)
@MelC54 Its obvious you cant read Mel ive always said Secretariat was the greatest race horse of all time but the most important race horse was Northern Dancer because over 80% of the horses all over the world carry his bloodline not once but 2 or 3 times in some horses. He is considered thr greatest sire of the 20th century not only in North America but in Great Britain France Japan India Australia as well as many other countries,So its obvious you no nothing abouy TB race horseing. Case Closed
Secretariat needed Ron Turcotte in this race. I couldn't believe how Eddie Maple mishandled him at the end...what a shit jockey on the greatest horse of all time. He was using his whip and the reins. He's a disgrace. He didn't deserve to ride him in his last race. It's unfortunate that Ron wasn't allowed to..he would have allowed the horse to run the race the way Secretariat wanted to...He understood...

Moving like a TREMENDOUS machine
Perfectly said!

Such an amazing Horse...I don't know where he gets that burst of energy from after running so long already in the race.
It’s like Pegasus taking off into the air. He soars like eagles. To me he is perfection. He is mind boggling, awe inspiring, astounding, and I cry whenever I watch the videos.
Most breathtaking creature i have ever seen.
elizabeth smith xx c
Secretariat's great great great great grandson Justify is a very close second in the beauty department.
Thank you for this! I was there at Woodbine .. a thrill I will never forget. Secretariat was breathtaking to watch.
Listen to the crowd as he hits the stretch, and look at that horse. He was built like a Greek God.
My God I love this!! "THERE he goes.. Penny moves forward in seat, roar of crowd increases, and when the camera ZOOMS in on bleacher crowd AT SAME TIME as that guy stands up and lunges forward, wow!
@0:35: great close-up of the sprinting power of the GOAT.
Thank you for this video. I was always sorry that we in the US never got to see Secretariat in his last race. This was great.

Kennedy Road swung out a little and bumped Secretariat. Eddie said, "He took off!.He just took off!"
The greatest to ever grace a racetrack in my lifetime. Frankly, Zenyatta is the closest I've seen to perfection since "Big Red." IMO.
The king and queen of the track, Secretariat and Zenyatta
" And there he goes! There he goes!!!!!!
a spectacular horse....
LISTEN! to that crowd as he heads for the final turn !! "they're standing and they're cheering because this is his last race..."
Man , BIG RED was something else. ❤❤❤

@MelC54 How could Northern Dancer beat a horse that was a living locomotive?
He had an ancestor who was called the Big Train! I was surprised to discover Secretariat had Man O War relations! Sö tomorrow can Big Brown who has our Dancer as a gg sire win the triple crown? We sure could use something good! I was 11 when I watched Northern Dancer win the derby and preakness and we all cried about the Belmont. Smarty Jones too made us cry. are you kidding me last race greatest horse ever and this is the best video an absolute disgrace!! please woodbine forward the complete race and great call by daryl wells rip
@chakadoodledoo I think Eddie Maple said that Kennedy Road accidently bumped Secretariat or something, and then Secretariat just took off.
In this final race, Secretariat ran the longest distance of his life: 1+5/8 miles. On grass, no less - a surface that was still new to him. WHAT A MARVEL HE WAS!
Secretariat got Laminitis. That's the same thing that ended up killing Barbaro.
Awesome!!!!!

Who here goes to Carlyidiot's videos and makes comments? How is it that she just does not go away?
Why you would make it personal in the first place is beyond me. You too have my information and could have simply messaged me. I had no intention of making it personal. I just wanted to point out to you I could see how people would think he was whipped.
It is reported that Man O' war once dated Sir Barton. I read it in People.....or Horse.
Okay. That is not the situation, here. But whatever. I wont talk you you anymore, ever.
...the big red breathing locomotive...
Way to make it personal.

Secretariat needed no whip. I agree, disgraceful. You don't whip nobility.
Because I don't follow orders by someone who is on the internet.

I see the young lady is up to her usual.
Just go way kaiser...it's that simple.
el bello caballo visa a buelo de mi caballo bello cosahui
It's simply agitation. Refer her to her high school football team. They can deal with it.
Nah, I'm good. :D
