Stargate's "HEROES" Was Going To Be Very Different (Dial the Gate)

- STARGATE SG-1 fans often cite "HEROES" as the show's best episode. The 2-parter aired late in the show's seventh season, showing the people of Stargate Command as real people - vulnerable yet brave soldiers and scientists who put their lives on the line every day.
The episode was written by Robert C. Cooper, who talked about "Heroes": in this recent appearance on "Dial the Gate." Cooper talks about the original inspiration behind the episode, working with Saul Rubinek (who played documentary filmmaker Emmett Bregman), and how what was meant to be a single hour turned into an emotionally stunning 2-parter.

I still watch SG series. Sometimes I just leave my TV or laptop playing when I'm doing chores around the house. This show will never get old to me. I even put up with SGU
I don't understand the hate SGU gets.. those same people enjoy 'Origins' though, even though that crap isn't canon

@@michaelpalmer1580 That's a big problem too. Back in the day, the news was considered by TV networks as a "loss leader". You don't make money directly from the news, it just gets people to tune into the network so they are then watching other things. These days, there's so much profit motive it's hard to really trust that they are operating in the full interest of the public good.
@@Arkalius80 It's now a couple of years later and even worse. We've gone far past the idea of having any trust that the news is operating with any interest in the public good. Trying to imagine what it will be like an another 2 years. It's so sad.
I am a long time SG fan, please keep up the good work.
SO I decided to watch this in 1.75 speed. Made me wonder what an episode of SG would be like where they go to a planet where the ' people ' there talk that fast.
If you spend a year or two in Georgia or one of the Carolinas and then go to either California or New York, you could get that same feeling.
These two were hard to watch. 😥 Another one was "Sunday" on SGA. Real tough. 😥

This remark about"no awards or accolades" also reminds me of Daniel in S7, newly returned to earthly life and the SGC (for the first time), asking Jack, "we do get paid for this, right?" 😊
lol I just commented on one of your video about this episode yesterday. Such a great episode. Loved that interview with Walter. The ending was also very moving. Great acting all round.
I loved to watch sg1 since i was 12 or 13.
My brother used to make fun of me for it. I never disputed his opinion or challenged him on it.
Lately he has become a fan of the series and told me he really enjoys it.
It s one of my favorite shows and am glad he finaly gets it.
Ps : bring back sg1 but don't ruin it for us fans with modern writing . Please respect the hard work of all the cast amd crew, and do their legacy justice. I m worried but hopfull.
I guess I’m the only one who didn’t like Heroes except for the Jack & Sam moments, and I hated that they killed off Fraiser.
Same here. Janet's death was also poorly written/executed and she was just killed off for the sake of killing her off, making it completely irrelevant outside those episodes and she was pretty much just forgotten. This makes killing her off even worse. They should have never have done it, only makes a show lose viewers.
I enjoyed the reporter's bits. He was very good. Started a bit antagonistic, but turned out to be good reporter just trying to do his job. His comments about a free and fair press were great. 😎
You are not the only one Tracey. Janet was and still is my favourite character and, if you havent watched it already, i urge you to watch the interveiw conducted with Teryl on Gateworld. When asked about who told her that the character was going to be killed off and when, she replies, with instant clarity, Robert Cooper in January. He asked her how she felt about it, and she says, "not good Robert, not good at all". The sadness in her voice is heartbreaking, even after all these years, the emotion of that moment is still raw, i just do not know why you would do that to someone who was a beloved member of the cast, a beloved character and a friend, he didnt have the balls to tell her to her face, it was done over the phone, Teryl was clearly upset, imagine how she must have felt at the time.
@@elisabethjones8377 Couldnt agree more Elisabeth, please see my reply to Tracey. It didnt make any sense to kill her off, i have heard various reasons, it shows the reality of war. No it doesnt, they didnt kill off a main character did they, look at Star Trek DS9, war storyline, millions had already died, every episode started with the latest cassualty lists(every body either knew, or had served with the deceased), but they were never going to kill off a main character, what did it bring to the episode? The character of Janet Fraiser, should have been expanded and developed, what abot poor Cassie for example? The poor girl loses her family, an entire civilillisation is wiped out, she is then used as a living bomb, why bother running with a plotline, but not develop it to a greater extent? So many missed opportunities, fans devastated and the actress wgo potrayed her equally devastated.

Yes, RDA is also a big fan. Dan's appearance on Stargate came after RDA's guest spot (as himself) in an episode of The Simpsons -- which was a dream come true for Rick!
Its weird to read comments from people stating they don't like these episodes. As they are among my favorites, definitely top 10. I love how the first half is a comedy episode but the second half takes on expected dark turn. I love the interviews and the part where Daniel sees if the guy would chase him.
As for Janet's death, I feel that it is actually well written and gets me every time. I would hardly say the characters don't react. Daniel is visibly upset and doesn't want to review the footage that he caught of her death. It really shows how a doctor in the military can die. It wasn't a space battle or sci-fi in anyway. She wasn't on the front lines but the frontlines came to her. It brings real consequences to what they are doing and since she wasn't a redshirt her death has a significant impact on the audience. Sam's speech at the end gets me too, as she talks about the number of people (including herself) that "did not die" in combat due to Janet.
It is also the only example I can think of where they introduce a team (sg-13) and make you care about them. You see their dynamic and they aren't shown as unconfident and it wasn't there fault that they got ambushed. Plus on a personal note I always love seeing "Casey" go on a rant about having kids ;).
Not even "no more taxes for life".
Or "can you tell us who shot Kennedy?".
Wait... So Frasier's death was basically an afterthought? Wow.

I believe it was released, that's why it was a two part episode.
So what episode replaced Heroes within the first half of that season?
I'm assuming they just scooted a dozen or so episodes back one spot.

Ask some of the writers if Jack and Sam ever got together! Over 20 years later, and I'm dying to know!
A long time ago one of the writer (I don't remember who) said for them it was "obvious" Jack and Sam where together, and they even put an easter egg in Season 4 of Atlantis. When Sam arrives on Atlantis, in her package she has a framed picture of Jack. In another episode of season 4, when she is in her office, in the background you can see (a little blurred) a framed picture of Jack and Sam. So yes they are together! Basically since the end of season 8 of SG-1!
I think even in season 9 of SG-1 at one point Agent Barett from NYD ask Sam if she wants to go on a date with him, and she says she has someone else (and it's way after Pete).
So yeah, it's very subtle but they definitely are together :D
@@bumpymary3769 Oh, believe me, I've searched the ends of the internet to find evidence of Jack and Sam getting together. In my eyes, yes there's confirmation, but I need someone who worked on the show to straight out say it

they could only be together if one retired since Atlantis is linked to the SGC and the pentagon he would still be a commander of her. And you cannot have relationships within the same chain of command.
There is a deleted scene in SGA where Carter is talking to Keller in Trio. She confirms that she's in 'a very long range relationship with someone in Washington who is older ("h-he's not THAT much older....") and going to retire soon' and the director/writer also confirms she's admitting to being in a relationship with Jack. Unfortunately the scene was made to be really all about Keller and since the whole episode was about her they snipped it.
Are there books continuing the story of SG1?
There are lots of tie-in novels set at various points in the show's continuity, but AFAIK nothing that is a continuation after the series' conclusion and the two movies.

Beautiful work the Heroes episodes. I like the ending where Hammond comes around and we get to see the patriotic part with the music. Makes me tear up every time because I’m sad about doc Fraser.
These episodes ruined Stargate, so it's the work is the opposite of beautiful. Worst written death episodes EVER!

"Heroes" is one of my absolutely favourites in SG-1. I normaly see it in german, so I don't know the original englisch phrase, but every time Daniel screams: Fraser was shot, she needs a doctor!
I dont know why but even Daniels death wasnt so sad for me, like Frasers oder Carson Beckets deatg in Atlantis.

And Carson Beckett dies in the episode Sunday of Stargate Atlantis. Later he appears as a clone created by michael.
And fraser appears in season 10 as a part of an alternative SG-Team.
I was on DXM and tripping when I first saw Daniel die and ascend and it was like I was watching a documentary of real events. I felt his death happen. I also saw it early because at that time Europe got the 2nd half of the seasons before the US and I downloaded it and watched it on my computer.That and the next episode were outstanding while tripping.
They're the worst written death episodes ever, and it ruined Stargate. All it did was unfairly kill off a character for no reason and made it irrelevant for the rest of the show. They removed my favorite character, who deserved to be upped to main instead. The rest of the show makes me miserable.

Sgu sank the franchise. Nobody was kind, friendly or happy to work together. I watched but hated every episode hoping it would turn back into stargate

Why does the writers hate Janet Fraiser fans so much?
Bring her back in the new series or I can't watch it. Bring her back and I'll finally finish season 10 and stop watching to 7x16 every time I watch it. Bring her back, then I'll watch. Heck I'll even buy it if you bring her back. Her death was poorly written and there was no purpose outside these episodes, just please fix it. Please! NEVER kill of important characters just for the sake of killing them off just to forget about them. That's just cruel to fans of said characters.
Even when they replaced her with Michael Shanks wife Alexa (Android Andromeda). Of course the writers left such a large thread left out with Jacks child on another planet.
Mate it's not that deep. The character's death is actually perfect for the episode. And the episodes are written perfectly. How's she important? In her 7 seasons she had maybe one major storyline which was Cassandra, her death certainly didn't 'ruin' the show in a way that you're describing.

And for a major character death that part was way too brief, and the 'trying to make it look like Jack and then "don't worry, it's JUST Janet" is so lazy, cheap and insulting. If you think that's perfect you're certainly blind, so why bother explaining anything about the potential she has to you? You wouldn't understand since you haven't understood how bad and unfair that was. They destroyed the show, if not then explain to me why trying to keep watching made me feel miserable, depressed and upset.

Janet's death was by far the worst written of all my favorite characters and all my favorite characters in my favorite shows were killed off.
I liked her character but they barely used her. If they were going to kill someone off (not sure why they felt the need...) she was a big enough character to make an effect, but so big as to alter the show that much. Kind of the same reason they killed Carson in Atlantis. In his case I think they just wanted another cute young woman for better ratings... Odd that both shows killed their doctors, but both doctors were not utilized much anyway. I thought it was a cheap, lazy move to make us think it was Jack - oh just the doctor - no worries. The filmmaker was more upset than anyone of the SGC...
I despise this episode, it ruined Stargate.
