I'm musician, i work in this theatre, i remember this beautiful Otello. If you search on youtube channel "Teatro Comunale Bologna" you can found Turandot. Kunde was singing Calaf, was in 2019 65 years old!!!
Heard him live yesterday in Ernani in Lisbon's São Carlos. Beautiful voice, enormous in volume, and puro belcanto. The other singers were all younger and you could really hear the difference between him and them.
A highly underrated tenor whom I had the HONOR of seeing in I Puritani (four performances) in San Francisco in the early 1990's. I was fortunate enough to have taped two of the performances, and the man was incredible. I saw Frank Lopardo in La Fille du Regiment around the same time, and he too was incredible. Thank goodness for RUclips.
Indeed, I agree with justaguy221. I'm French and a tenor (but not a nasal French tenor, LOL!) and the "n" is supposed to be on the high c. Otherwise it doesn't sound like French. By the way it is harder this way because it's one thing to sing a "n" on a F to focus a sound like before "d'amor" at the end of Una Furtiva Lagrima but it's risky on a high C!
He has more frequencies in his voice than Florez, which gives him more expressiveness. (On disk Florez reminds me of a soprano kazoo; in HD broadcast he makes me feel like I'm having brain surgery.)
For those splitting hairs between JDF and GK, they both have super techniques and unforced highs and both are great artists - one being "better" than the other is a subjective thing. Opinions are like a$$holes: we all have one, and they all stink.
@saagua1953 For as much as comparisons between great performances are worth, I think that what gives Florez the edge is his overall interpretation of the role, rather a simple question of his looks or being "flavour of the month". JDF injects an utterly compelling sense of youthful enthusiasm, a freshness, a "spring", which is totally appropriate to the role and which his slight frame and good looks complement perfectly. That said, this too is exquisite.
His C's are just as good as Florez's. So why has all the praise gone to Florez? I suspect it is due to his unusual good looks. That has swayed critics in his favor over other tenors quite as good as he.
@BryanLK I think your first sentence contains a contradiction: If the C's are technically as good as Florez', they can't feel more forced! You're right: They are more forced, but Florez C's are technically better!
WRONG!!! While his Hi C's may be as technically good as Florez's they feel much more forced and boring. He's got no doubt a beautiful voice, and if you listen to his La Troyens it's beautiful and meaningful, but he is definitely not as accomplished as Floerez as an artists.
One of the most underrated Tenors since the War!!
heard gregory in 2022 in bologna. Otello. Astonishing

A massively underated Tenor,a great Artist is Gregory
His high C's are crystal clear...Amazing

It would be amazing to see some of these videos of Puritani if you can manage to upload them on youtube.
One of the great Tenors...hugely underated,an incredible range and artistry!!
Solamente bravissimo.
Omg his C's are sooo secure!!! Phhwaaaaa... He's absolutely brilliant....
Beautiful rendition!!!
*Standing ovation in my living room XD
high c for gregory is like a simple breath
Chapeau, Chapeau .... !!!
King of high C
I was privileged to sing Marguerite in Faust with him back in grad school at U of I.
Wow..wow....perfect!
Incredibile. Che peccato! Dovevo asclotare dal vivo. Una perfetta rapresentazione!
Impresionante, de lo mejor que he oído
Amazing, thanks for the post.
MAGNIFIQUE
I'm in love!!!
BRAVOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bravo!
molto bravo !
LO DEJA CHIQUITO A JUAN DIEGO BRAVOOOOOOOOO!!
Eccellente !!!!!!!!
BRAVO!!!

His high c's are better then florez i think
Por supuesto
I agree with you.
Sì ...
Agreed! He has more meat to his voice as well!
What year is it, please? Incredible singing.
Da ❤️ Dio
bravissimo
What does a tenor have to do to become less ignored? Listen closely. GREAT STUFF!

You can see the start of the spinto tenor here :)
Actually, at one point Kunde mentored Florez and helped boost Florez's career. Get your facts straight.
High C seems to be so easy for him.
What year and where? Please.
He has more frequencies in his voice than Florez, which gives him more expressiveness. (On disk Florez reminds me of a soprano kazoo; in HD broadcast he makes me feel like I'm having brain surgery.)
I totally agree. His voice is so much more expressive and interesting than Florez!
Bravissimo
Eccellente
Where was this?
Flawless technique! His tongue just rolls forward for the C's which is what's supposed to happen!
exelente interpretacion, wenisimo!
This is now my second favorite aside from Pavarotti's
bravo kunde. really. but no one could sing it as Pavarotti. no doubt
He isn't Pavarotti? Is he supposed to be?
Incredible.
What's more incredible is that he sounds better than this!
if french there is the liaison so when speak we say pour mon-ame (monname)
@tenor220 Is more visceral... I agree with you
