This content is from my previous video. Some people were interested in the real-time footage of how to make a wooden crimp.
The following tools were used:
Band saw
Belt sander
Angle grinder with a carbide disc (King Arthur's Tools)
Carver’s vise (Veritas)
Drill with a sanding pad
Detail sander
Filmed and edited by Tobias Wurft.
Thanks for all your support!
Nice job. I find a router with a number of different diameter rounding bits really useful tool to make holds pretty quickly too.
Thanks!
Yes routers and trimmers are really useful tools. But with a big router it's a little bit sketchy on small holds. Not something I would like to share on RUclips... :)
@@wurfttobias fair enough, they are a dangerous tool in inexperienced hands. In case you're interested, if I'm making a bunch of holds, I like to rip a 15 or 30 degree angle along one side of a decent length of timber (with a board thickness and width of the holds I'm after), then round off both sides with the router. After that I lop it up to the hold size I want with the circular saw (incut or sloping edges depending if I want multiple pulling angles) followed by a quick run of any sharp edges over the sander, a triangle of countersunk screw holes (2 on the hold edge) and they're done. Not as professional looking as yours but they still look ok and are functional for climbing. Keep up the good work
@@khakicam5400 Sounds like a very efficient workflow!
Nice cubes in the background👍
Really awesome job. You inspired me
Thanks! :)
Excellent!
Man I love these...I went out and grabbed an angle grinder. Can’t wait to try some bigger holds this weekend. Thanks for the vids...would love to see your wall Brother.
Very nice work ! Thank's for sharing your tips
I would like to see your wall, And how you build your problems.
nice video!
Thanks! Will make a video about my wall at some point!
Thanks a lot man !
I was your 1000th subscriber
Hehe :) That's awesome! Thanks Josh
Thoughts on glued-up hardwood lumber for making larger holds? Getting slabs is kinda pricey. Also, really inspired by your videos - just bought the veritas vice yesterday. Looking forward to improving the holds I already made.
Thanks.
Awesome! The Carvers Vise is really useful. So far, I've only glued up plywood for bigger holds. Don't have a plainer to achieve perfectly plain hardwood lumber surfaces that can be glued together. But used to do that in my dad's workshop.
how is that tooñ that you hold the holds with called bro? and what wood you recomend me? your a beast best video ive seen by the moment on wooden holds :)
Thank you bro! That's the Carver's Vise from Veritas. In one of my other videos, I do explain the simple attachment that I made to attach the climbing holds to the mounting plate. I would recommend using softer hardwood (e.g. poplar, tulip, maple) to start with. At first, you will learn more quickly if you use softer wood because you spend less time with sanding. Beech is really great when it comes to durability, availability, and texture but it's a little bit harder.
Enjoy the journey! :)
Hi what kind of tool are you use for holding the hold any link where I can buy one please thanks
That's the Veritas Carver's Vise with the 2" mounting plate. Tools are also explained in my latest video upload.

Do you use any metal inserts for the bolt hole?
No, you don't need them when using countersunk bolts. But I would recommend using them in combination with normal bolts.
Very Nice! I wanna try too. What kind of holder are you using for the end shape? You can fix the the climbing hold in every position?
Thanks!
That's the Veritas Carver's Vise with the 2" mounting plate.
Could you shares link for the sanding pad you use in your drill please? I can’t find one.....
awesome holds! Can’t wait to get started
It's something like this:

I glued a velcro discs on top of the foam in order to use the velcro sanding pads.
what is the best wood for holds? and how do i find that tree? i live in spain, madrid...
In my opinion, a medium density/hard hardwood with small pores is ideal for climbing holds. My favorite, when it comes to the wood properties, is beech. I would definitely recommend working with dried wood (lumber), not fresh cut wood because otherwise you will most likely have issues with cracks and warping.
@@wurfttobias so should i chop a good tree and then let it dry on a wooden house for example for how long?
What kind of wood is it??
In this video, I used Matai.
@@wurfttobias thank u and nice work!!
Great holds! Shaped my first a few weeks ago out of cherry.
Great work bro...can u pls tell what wood do u use.... or recommend to use for making these holds
Thanks!
In this video I'm using Matai. In general, I can recommend all hardwoods.
Wonderful work! Thanks a lot, it helped me a lot to start that addictive hobby! :D
(Maybe you should use protective glasses though) -> Paternalistic, i'm sorry
Thanks man, that's awesome!
You're right, should always wear my safety glasses but having issues with my normal glasses fogging up (bad excuse, I know! Will work on it!)
@@wurfttobias I won't blame you, I have the same fu*k**g issue...But @8:21 when I see the wood dust the proximity of your head and your eyelashes, it hurts me a lot for your eyes! :D
Anyway, keep rocking like that, it's awesome work!
