Nonsense: hyacinth seeds can lie dormant for 25 years. This physical removal is a way of managing the issue but short term. What is needed is a totally lateral approach to the challenge. Such as killing the plants with harmonic frequency vibrations.
The need to start tackling the problem upstream. The water systems in Benoni which feed into Hartbeespoort dam and the Vaal system need to be cleared first.
Please bring them to Benoni and Springs. We used to spend Sunday afternoons at Murray Park (Presidents Dam) but that has been impossible the last few years

The dam is not the only problem in Harties. The state of the roads in Schoemansville, Meerhof, Melody, Ifafi is shocking. Rates are charged, but the roads remain potholed.
Early yesterday morning I watched a Carte Blanche video showing how the anc collapsed the Knysna municipality. This morning I learned that the anc is a MAJOR contributor to the destruction of the Haarties dam. Seems like, wherever the anc goes, in some shape or form destruction follows down its path. And that, to me, sounds like a big problem. A problem that must be resolved on 29 May 2024, in the elections!
Another problem with hyacinth is that it increases evaporation 3-fold by means of evapotranspiration through the leaves. We need to conserve our water resources. The hopper is not the only insect that feeds on hyacinth. I have tried a weevil and a moth as biocontrol agents. Both unsuccessful. Maybe with the breeding programme in place, the hopper will be more successful.
Coming from JHB…. Where they use the rivers as toilets, distbins and washing. This is seen as normal behaviour and that needs to change. Remove people squatting next to rivers amd you will not only help fix this issue but several others as well
This is a very easy issue to fix... The problem is who they going to tender the solution to...and how much public funds they gonna use. There is a undeniably easy engineering solution to get these plants out before they spread.
All fine, but the dead plants sink into the water and rot underwater, and the sewerage problem will be just as bad! The plant should be mechanically extracted for fertilizer. The plants have a cleansing effect, extracting polluting nutrients.
double its size every 2 weeks? exponential? Hmm... DOUBT. You likely mean every two weeks it grows back to the same levels it was before they removed half of it. Exponential doubling every two weeks would have long had that hyacinth reach the moon and back! Another question, what happens when there is no more hyacinth? The insects will just die off?
The hyacinths are an excellent animal and ostrich food. Animals in drought areas are dying of hunger and thirst. Carotenoids in flowers. Herbicides killed the plants...then the toxic mix sank to the bottom...fish died by the millions, the clear water was no longer filtered by the roots... WE LIVED AT HARTEBEESPOORT DAM AT THAT TIME..changed from fishing paradise to a large developement around a sewerage system. NB..what will the hoppers eat when the hyacinths are gone? Pelindaba Uranium plant also contributed to massive multiplication of algae..witnesses reports...plus Jukskei river pollution from surrounding settlements.
Before pointing fingers, we must first start at the root of the problem and first address the real cause of this is because someone liked an exotic plant, they’re to blame for this
The plant that is the focus of this video is the common water hyacinth (pontederia crassipes), native to South America. The hyacinth that you can buy in shops and nurseries is hyacinthus orientalis, which is native to the eastern Mediterranean, and is a different plant altogether. It does not grow on top of water and is not invasive
The problem starts with the law. The law should state that no house should be built less than 100 m from rivers. I believe there was a rule like that many years back. Now they built houses and estates on islands in rivers below flood levels etc. although environmental impact studies had been done obviously with money under the table. Things done wrong will never get right. The pollution of the Rhine river was such an example. Maybe we should learn what they have done.
City of Tswhane (DA since 2017) and in 2022 it was DA in the City of Johannesburg. In Springs, a DA ward, the residents put their OWN water pipes in last year. In Tswhane, people died from Cholera. In False Bay, sewerage flows into the ocean (with NO distaster cause). Nelson Mandela Bay? Knysna? The DA is TERRIBLE at water management - historically! I mean, as far back as I recall, people had to throw their sewerage in Cape Town International Airport to get services..
I did research with hyacinth and Pekin ducks. The ducks refuse to eat anything else. I had to protect the hyacinth from the ducks, but I couldn't. The ducks find a way around, through, under, over, every barrier. They completely finished the hyacinth. Here's the solution: floating Pekin duck farms.
The sad reality and results of a failing leadership party that provided minimal to no budgets to control the invasive species with in the borders of our amazing country. The water hyacinth is only one of to many invasives being ignored and forcing proud private citizens and establishments to stand together to rectify the failures of the same entities we trust to govern our laws and protect our basic human rights, not only for us residing currently but for the future generations to come.
Megamelus was introduced to South Africa in 2013. Other insects have been around since the 70s and they contribute to the reduction of the water hyacinth as well. Because of how heavily the plants were sprayed historically the insects could not survive in high enough numbers to damage the plants. Now, between mass rearing and the cessation of spraying the insects are having an impact. The records do exist.
Indeed that is a major concern. The short lifespan and the inablity to reproduce (which sadly wasn't covered in this expose), makes this an effective solution without harmful long term effects to the local bio system.
In a healthy land, birds, especially ducks, could have assisted in controlling the hycintas, but our wildlife has gone unprotected and exterminated for human expansion purposes, leaving more harmful components to run rampant without any natural control.
South Africa has used biological control for well over 100 years. the same insect is being used in the USA and elsewhere as well. It's not just Harties.
Why is mechanical removal controversial? Physical removal is the only way of removing the nitrogen. The bugs don't remove the nitrogen. Huge scale compost plants could be feasible? They can mix the compost with other sources to lower the heavy metal content.
Dredging that soil like the Aztecs, maya and inca did wil give you thee best fertilised soil for growing. Build a little island in the middle with that to farm food for all the houses. Do that and you help the environment.
The best thing about a politician is they are biodegradable, and sadly, politics is like social media, makes politicians spineless and unable to act, for fear of upsetting someone, something or whatever!
