@rmo52: The pianist is Dave Zoller, the bassist is Chris Clarke and drummer is yours truly, Bobby Breaux. We are all Dallas-based but I worked for Al years earlier when I lived in New Orleans. We all knew Rich Matteson from his connection with North Texas State Univ. north of Dallas in Denton.

Al Hirt was a Master, an Icon and a legend. If someone thinks differently, they do not know what they are talking about.

Wow, I was on that band. i remember this concert. Rich killed it all night, and so did Al. I think back to these days a lot as a student at the University of North Florida, now directing the UNF Jazz Ensemble 1, a day does not go by the I don't see or hear Rich in the room yelling, "Dump the truck" on the out choruses. He was an incredible musician, educator and person . Miss him dearly.

@Airman410-I'm the drummer in that vid. That was the Jacksonville Jazz Festival in '87. Al was very ill that night from a severe inner ear infection and almost didn't play.

I loved the audience shots; they were having a great time. To look at their reactions, you'd think it was a rock concert!

I just noticed, Rich Matteson is playing a 4-in-line valve euphonium.

This is not a battle...this is not between Rich and Al...Their both absolutely great horn players..each has something to say ...stop trying to interpret this as one is better than the other...the whole band swings and has great soloist....PERIOD!

@Airman410 So I am supposed to assume Al Hirt was not a real master? Get real.

Rich was almost as good as David Bandman. Of course, Bandman was better than all euphonium players playing jazz.
