I have vivid memories of the mall being packed with shoppers during the 1980 - 1992 holiday seasons. It reminded me of a scene out of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation: music playing, wall-to-wall people, and lines of people waiting to have their gifts wrapped. A trip to the Newburgh Mall - during my teen years - was just as exciting for me as going to the beach, a baseball game, or a movie. A meal at the Ground Round (with free servings of popcorn); a visit to Walden Books to read baseball books, an Reese's Pieces ice cream sundae from Friendly's, and then scouring through the shelves of games and action figures at Kaybee (KB) toys was something that I always looked forward to. When I wasn't actively shopping, I would sit on one of benches and people watch. I worked at EB Games (before Gamestop took it over) for a while, and went to the florist to buy flowers for Mother's Day; rented my tux for my proms there; and even did some banking there. I am stunned by the suddenness of shifts in cultural behavior over the last forty years, but remain thankful to have experienced the mall phenomena.
I remember that!!!
There was a Friendlys restaurant in there, a Cvs, a Caldor, a Bank, game room arcade, dentist, Kay Jewlers, Howlands, Sears and so many other store fronts, now looks like they walled some of that off. My old stumping grounds sort of speak back in the day. There also was a Ground Round restaurant. Its sad to see what happened to this Mall. Also Kay Bee toys was in there along with Cosmos Pizza.
I was a kid of the late 80s and 90s in Orange County. I remember coming here and to the Middletown Galleria a lot. We usually came to Sears and Caldors there. If you're up for some more malls in this area, I'd invite you to come check out the Shops at Nanuet. It was previously the Nanuet Mall which was bought out by Simon Properties and converted to an outdoor mall. There's an old Sears building and tire center still there from the original mall. Now the main floor of the Sears building is a home decor store which is a front for the shipping and logistics company out of the back. The Sears tire center is just abandoned. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this and the state of the Palisades Mall down the road from there which is currently in foreclosure.
The At Home store is where Macy’s used to be. I think a low budget furniture store took over Sears. I warned my Manager that we were getting shut down, the day I picked up the call from Mall Management that surveyors were coming to our Sears Auto Center. He said “ don’t worry we’re the top sellers in the district”. Later that afternoon he gathered all us together to give us the bad news. That same day Macy’s announced they were leaving. I was back in Rockland this past Thanksgiving. It’s still like a knife in my heart to see that abandoned building. I remember when they used to sell gas. I’m now retired living by a Florida beach and loving it.
As a Newburgh resident of over 20 years, I can confirm this is basically a dead mall. Unless you need shoes or a cell phone case, there's nothing in that mall you can't get elsewhere
Now The Newburgh Mall Is Adding New Stores Now And Add A Wall At The Pizza Place And Casino :And Adding These Places: Planet Fitness Habior Fright And O'Reilly
@Augie_Worlds I heard this. They're basically turning it from a traditional mall to a strip mall
I used to work in this mall, in Kay-bee Toy and Hobby shop in 1981. I BELIEVE it was down at the Caldor end, but I can't remember for sure.
Yup right next to the Friendly's. That end was a setup for parents.
This is the mall closest to me! Used to have much more life in it, and I'm continually surprised that it remains open. The casino has revived the mall a bit, but not by much. From what I can tell everyone who goes to the casino stays in the casino, and it isn't doing the rest of the mall any favors. Can't blame 'em since all the good places to shop are gone.
2:13 This was indeed an FYE, and was the kind that actually had aisles worth of CDs and DVDs instead of just collectable Hot Topic style fluff
2:06 There used to be a pretzel and hot dog kiosk in the center area (was possibly a Pretzelmaker?)
4:11 Chilitos used to be The Ground Round restaurant roughly 10 years ago
4:37 The "Exotic Clouds" smoke shop is fairly recent, and used to be home to several other stores, one of them being Zales (if I remember correctly)
5:54 The small empty place on the right next to the pizza shop used to be a GameStop
8:45 You are correct about there being stores in that area. I can't remember what they were for the life of me. Think they've been gone at least 8-10 years.
The glasses place mentioned was a Sterling Optical, near one of the entrances (thought it was the one closest to Sears but I might be wrong).
The shops lasting the longest here have been Office Depot (incredible, don't know how), Bath and Body Works, Claire's, the pizza place, and the shoe stores.
The classic car exhibits are definitely recent, first time I saw them was when I visited last month.
Great video!
2:06 - That was actually a Pretzel Time! I used to work at David's Cookies in the very center across from Old Navy back in 2003-4, and we lost so much business to them.
The “Lerner” store front at the mall was a chain of clothing stores that stretched across the U.S. until they were rebranded to “Lerner New York” in 92 and then rebranded to “New York and Company” in 2004. Nice video!
Welcome to the Newburgh Floor as I like to call it... haha! I've lived here in Orange County my entire life. Sadly, the Newburgh Mall has declined tremendously over the years. I am still surprised to see it open with the few stores and small businesses it has left. Where the entire strip at the end near Sears and Personal Touch used to be was Walden Books back in the day. My mother and I used to go there all the time and spend a few hundred dollars on books. There also used to be an arcade and I do remember going to Caldors all the time. Are you from this area? I saw your video about the Kingston Mall as well and that mall is just as depressing. I love that you're visiting dying malls... keep it up!!! Newburgh used to not be as busy as it is now. I love that you also do your research about the malls, too! Makes your videos rather interesting. Keep up with the great content!!
I grew up right in goshen so for me, This really hits home 💔 Thank you for posting these videos. Upstate is such uncharted territory
Thanks! Glad you like the videos. I'm from Connecticut, so this a couple of hours from me. I'm doing all the malls in driving distance from me. I'll be hitting upstate new york and northern New England next.
@@fleabittenadventures love it!!! Keep it up!!
My family came here a bit when I was a kid. My dad would bring me to GameStop in the mid 2000’s to pick up games. GameStop would be to the left from the main entrance. It was the store just past Mister Pizza. Track 23 was Old Navy as I remembered it. Champs has been there forever it feels like. My family also came to Sears back in the day for appliances.
I was surprised to see any people in the mall to be honest. I would consider it a dead mall. My wife didn’t even know it was still open until I showed her this video. The Middletown Galleria was always the better mall to visit nearby though. Thanks for the video!
Edit: Also, that black vortex display piece has been there forever. You drop a coin down it and watch it roll around until it falls in the middle lol.
Cool. Thanks for the info.
So as of this writing (July 2024), it appears they are planning to convert this mall to an outdoor shopping mall, and add “several national stores”, according to a letter from the town posted in the mall on a wall across from the casino and from a note on the mall’s website.
Due to these plans, the wing heading towards Sears is blocked off at Shoe Encore, and the wing to the casino is blocked from the mall entrances 3 and 4 next to the casino to the bath and body works. As a result, to go from the casino to the mall and vice versa, you will need to exit out of mall entrance 3, and walk the sidewalk to mall entrance 2 (center entrance).
On another note, the office depot closed up shop as well prior to the construction.
Great timing on showing us the inside wings before they shut them down, Tom!
Devastated to see that the Kay Jewelers that was where the motorcycles are now is gone. That’s where my husband got my engagement ring and we got our wedding bands - because it was a dying mall without much traffic, the staff really took their time to help him when he got my engagement ring, and they remembered him when we got our wedding bands and took such great care of us. I hope that those employees, especially the one sweet woman, were successfully relocated.
Also that Track 23 was an awesome Old Navy in it’s time, it was huge and perfectly set up, so easy to navigate and see everything - current Old Navy stores are so difficult to find what you’re looking for.
I'll do my best here.
Looking from the entrance you came in, at the junction with the casino at your back:
- Casino space was, as you said, Caldor's, then Bon-Ton. 0:49 on left
- To your right with the brick was Ruby Tuesday's. 1:00
- Next stall up on the right was Kay-Bee Toys. 1:34
- On the left I think an optometrist. 1:34
- Somewhere in that area, in one of the entrances, was a gift shop. (1:08 on right?)
- Farther up on the left bast the optometrist was a dollar store. 1:30
- Past the Kay-Bee, I think, was The Gap. Ironically still a gap, just a different kind... (1:37 right)
- Past that, what's now a Jimmy Jazz was once a Payless.
- Across from the Payless was, I think, Walden Books. I might be wrong on that placement. There was definitely a Walden books on that left wall somewhere though. Most recently I believe it was a Christian bookstore. 1:56
- Pamela's Express was a Pretzel Time. 1:47
- Beyond Payless with the triangle marquee, FYE 2:17
- The Motorcyclepedia booth was a jewelry store I believe. Kay Jewelers? 2:32
- The smoke shop was a candy store at one point, and may have been a Disney store for a hot minute. 2:47 right
- As you said, the Track 23 was an Old Navy. 4:02
- The Chilitos was a Ground Round. 4:23
- Moving up a bit, the pizza place was Cosmo's. 5:42
- Past the pizza place was Game Stop / Software etc. 5:53 right
- Past the Game Stop was Olympia Sports. 7:01
- Past that in the Martial Arts space was a sort of variety discount store where you could buy things like cassette tapes and school supplies. 7:10 right
- Across from that, near the GNC was (I think) a shoe store? 6:30 right
- GNC was a Radio Shack. 6:57
- Somewhere down on that side, to the left, was the arcade. It was quite small. 7:15 maybe?
- The areas to the left of Sears had been walled off for as long as I can remember, at least since the mid 90s.
- And, of course, Sears.
- Somewhere in the parking lot was (maybe still is) a McDonald's.
That's more or less how I remember it, but keep in mind that this was through the lens of a child and I may have misplaced some things. Final note: before the more modern motif you see inside, the mall once had a very 80s neon motif, but it's been at least 25 years since they changed that.
Thanks for all the info!
Did this mall used to have a lower level or am I confusing it with another one? There wasn't much down there from what I recall.
I think it was the Middletown Galleria that had a Filene's Basement.@@dorkistry
@@BokBarber Was there something before Crystal Run? This would have been late 80s/early 90s. I’m trying to remember what store was down there that I would have checked it out.
@@dorkistry My wife, who grew up in the area, said that there was some sort of small plaza around a Caldor's. It was a little more than a strip mall as it had an indoor area, but wasn't a full mall.
Maybe similar to The Poughkeepsie Plaza (where Dragon's Den used to be) if you've ever been in there?
Edit: she says not even that big. so really just a strip mall with a vestibule.
Lifetime resident. It's a mall being brought back to life. Used to be a very popular place and died years ago. Grew up in the 1980s as a teen going to this mall. The casino is bringing it back to life.
A lot of childhood memories in that mall that's for sure. Growing up in the 90s early 2000s.
I’m new so excuse me if it’s been mentioned. Look up the Massapequa Mall on Long Island NY. Thanks
Yes. I'll be doing the Long Island malls at some point. It's a long drive for me though, so it may not be too soon.
So trippy to see this. I grew up there. Walden Books. KB Toys. Zales was where the bikes were. Sbarros. GameStop. That weird section by Sears was always like that they didn’t wall of stores. But they did wall off a bunch of stores by the casino. Hallmark used to be there. Just crazy to see this.
Actually that was Kay jewelers were the bikes were. it was there from 1980 to 2020 then moved to another location further down NY 300. I don't remember sbarros, But futher down by Sears was Listening Booth records and tapes, Radio Shack, Spencer's, Space Port arcade Wilson Suede and leather and on and on.
I could write a dissertation on the Hudson Valley changes. In the 1970's the Hudson Valley was still an isolate area not impacted by NYC. You had regional malls in Middletown (Orange Plaza), Newburgh Mall, Mid-Hudson Mall and Shorts Hills Mall in Wappingers Falls. In the late 70's early 80's NYC wealth started to encroach and become a commuter hotbed. People with money that wanted to shop higher end brands and didn't think twice about traveling to Danbury CT, White Plains, or Garden State Plaza, NJ to shop. So Malls like Orange Plaza, Middletown, Newburgh Mall, Mid-Hudson Mall and Short Hills Mall which offered the same standard stores such as Spencer's, Orange Julice, Walden Books and Thom McCann couldn't compete. What did happen was new malls opened Poughkeepsie Galleria, Crystal Run Galleria, Garden State Plaza became bigger and more high end, and Palisades were built with higher end stores which became the death blow to the Mid-Hudson regional malls. There is one additional factor and that is Woodbury Common, the largest Premium Outlet in the world, with direct bus service from NYC, It is the most famous shopping outlet in the world. I won't get into the politics of Albany trying to save Newburgh and its mall with the casino license as it was a stupid decision.
To your question, Yes Newburgh Mall is dead.
Spencer's is still doing well at a thriving mall in my city, but across town,a newer mall is half dead.
Used to be a Weis Market on the property many years ago, I went here when going to college decades ago in Newburgh. Last time I was here it was not the same, and that was years ago. Bon-Ton and Sears were still open.
Wow, there is a casino in the Newburgh Mall? Didn't know that. Need to check it out for that and the old motorcycles. Good video.
Thanks for watching!
The casino just opened either earlier this year or at the end of last year. For what's it's worth, it has brought a lot of life back into the mall. The parking lot right in front of the casino always appears to be full. I have heard that the mall owner is planning on building a covered parking garage in the back side of the mall right behind the casino to accommodate additional parking. The downside to the casino (asides from the ills associated with gambling) is that the casino has no restaurant associated with it. From what I heard, the plan is that the casino owner wants to attract other restaurants to come and set up shop in the mall.
Grew up there in 80s as a kid. Worked at McDonald's and hung out in the mall as a teenager. And Cinema 10 down the road
I remember Caldor, Cosmos Pizza, the Arcade (I think it was called Time Machine), Ground Round, and Kay Bee Toys. Last time in live in Newburgh was the early 90s
I went to that arcade a few times back in the mid-1990s. It may have been called "Dream Machine" because the South Hills Mall in Poughkeepsie and Dutchess Mall in Fishkill both had these arcades. I won the coloring contest several times and received an Easter basket and card for 50 tokens.
The Newburgh Mall is located in the Town of Newburgh , it’s often confused with the city of Newburgh. Two totally separate municipalities.
The last time I was at this mall was over a year ago. They were still working on the casino. Judging from your video, I would say the activity has picked up at this mall since I saw it. I really like the mini car show there. I think malls have to do things like that if they want to offer people something different than what Amazon does.
Also that Jennifer furniture store was there before the casino but it was so expensive.
I had an ex gf that used to work at Rainbow (small clothing store) some 15 years ago, can't believe what it has become of newburgh. Super blessed to have made it out of there
i miss going to software etc in 1998 hyped about the Dreamcast coming out and the initial pokemon card craze! It's where i got pokemon yellow!
I was there at its opening and remember great stores like ....Sears...Orange Julis....Space Port arcade...Chess King...Spencers Gifts...Deb...Cosimos Pizza...Kay Jewelers ...Hannoush...Kaybee Toys....Radio Shack....Listening Booth Records. ...GNC...Corinthians Hair Salon...Shoe Repair Shop...BonTon...Landers Florist...Caldors...Ground Round....Friendlys Restaurant...Bath and Bodyworks..Things Remembered gift shop...Sport Locker sneakers...Manchesters Clothing...Vision Care...office Depot....a Dollarstore...Gamestop...etc. The casino was the anticipated shot in the arm to get the mall moving again. So far....I only shop at the office depot and pizza place. 😢 The casino is also a great place. The mall will die due to our inflation no doubt.
I moved to Orange County in the early 2000's and even back then this mall was in the decline. In the 2010's, the land right across the street from the mall started being cleared and the rumor was that an outdoor mall was going to be built there with Costco being one of the anchors. But I suppose with the decline in brick and mortar stores, the plans for another mall fell through. Construction for four warehouses on the site just recently completed, with Tesla signing on to two of the four buildings.
Nice video 😊
Thanks!
I grew up in this mall and still visit for the casino and mexican restaurant (which is delicious). This mall died around 2015 horribly as more and more stores began to close and the surrounding area got poorer and poorer. Sad fate, and I think the Casino kind of cements that eventually it will take over the whole thing one day.
I wouldn't be surprised if there comes a day when Resorts World Casino engulfs the mall and what's left of the mall (the food eateries and small shops) just because a part of the casino.
from what i read thats the plan. their suppose to add more stuff a hotel and some stores for the casino.
So my x girlfriend and I walked the mall Sunday GNC is now closed. Last time I was there Game Stop was still open and so was FYE. I remember there use to be a Namco arcade where Office Depot is now. She grow up going to the mall as a kid and said there was a KB Toy store as well.
This is sad…my wife grew up about twenty miles away in Ellenville and we’d come here on weekends when we were dating in college in the late 80’s-it was pretty decent, if small back then (more often we’d head across the bridge to the Poughkeepsie Galleria)-visiting in the early 2000’s after relocating to Southern California, the place was dying even back then! Shocked it’s still “open”(??)
From my own experience, once you start seeing martial arts schools and numerous cellular stores taking over storefronts, it's typically a death knell for most enclosed malls.
When I went there as a kid mightve been early 2000 they had Friendly's, Sears, Kb-Toys, Payless, GameStop, Fye also at one point there was a arcade room to with games like duck hunt and pac-man good memories
Reminds me of Broadway Commons here on Long Island which is a dying mall which is closer to being a dead mall. Though Broadway has a Target and Ikea, they don't bring much foot traffic into the mall and it's hard to consider them anchors. Once Macy's (formerly Sterns, and Gertz) closed in 2020 the mall's fate was sealed.
I’m actually, really good at identifying tenants by their store design.
2:14 was an FYE
2nd empty store front used to be a FYE with the empty gray signs
I often go with the wife to the casino. I used to go to Sears for tools, children's clothing, tires, and such. There's a motocycle museum about 10 minutes away, and Orange County Choppers was down the road. There used to a few really good family restaurants and good pizza. Kay Bee toys was there, and my kids loved that place. Dr Shoe has been there for quite some time. I grew up in Brooklyn and the first big indoor mall was Kings Plaza. I think I spent most of the 70's there. I'm upstate now and wonder how Kings Plaza is doing. Might be worth a trip for you.😅
I agree Office Depot isn’t an anchor store. In my opinion anchor stores are department stores.
It gets decent traffic for a dead mall. Back only in 2013 this mall was doing fairly well and even 2013 had a lot of dead malls. But Sears,The Bonton , FYE and OLd Navy closed and killed most of it off.
Wow. I went to this mall back in 2022ish, maybe 2021, and it was DEAD. There were like 3 stores and it was so sad, a furniture store that had been in the old sears was going out of business. This mall looks downright alive now in this video.
Oh I guess it was the old JCPenny that had the furniture store, because I do remember going into the actual sears, I had totally forgot about that. My family lived at West Point in the 90s and we went to sears there many times and it was like a blast from the past, because it looked exactly the same in 2021-2ish.
That orange car, with the dome, looks like then futuristic car Endora whipped up for Darren in a 3rd season ep of “Bewiched” (from 1967).
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do the Jefferson Valley mall in the Mahopac area
Already did. I did a video a few months ago
I remember this mall in 2010 when I was a kid and it was fun from what I remember. The olympia was pretty cool and the gamestop had the demo games you could play and there was a pizza shop and an old navy from what I remember and the sears too. Shame it's dying
Subscribed ❤
Thanks!
Office Depot just closed in possibly January
I was there recently. The chilitos mexican restaurant was amazing! Worth a try if you love mexican. Side note: I'm not affiliated with the restaurant, I just like food.
Good to know!
Caldor made it to Westfield + Chicopee Mass. Stand alone in Westfield. The old Fairfield Mall in Chicopee. Now, knocked down.
The area to the left near the old sears where in fact all store fronts. When office deopt came in they combined all of them and made that entire area office depot. The space to the right of dr shoe was a dinner. The space by the door in that hallway was a Chinese food restaurant but its probably been at least 30 years since that was open. I could probably name a lot of the spaces. Worked there all through college at a David's cookies near the entrance in the middle of the mall.
i remember that diner when i was a kid growing up
Nicks diner
Honestly if most of the stores leave, the mall has the opportunity to turn itself into a resort for the casinos with shops and restaurants to match. Based on other casinos/resorts I've seen, although I'm not sure if zoning laws could allow for that.
A couple of the loading doors for the old Sears are open, so there's evidently some work going on inside.
I've never heard of a dojo in a mall before. Strange
I wonder what they are going to do with those sweet motorcycles there.
I remember going here as a kid and being excited to go the KB Toys, the Fye and Gamestop. KBToys was the first store to go which was more cause og KB Toys went out of business. Then FYE also closed up and Gamestop was the last real major reason I had for going in the mall. The mall WANTED to keep Gamestop but they couldn't afford it. I still remember when that Gamestop had a store closing sale. I wish I went earlier cause there were new $70 games dropped down to as low as $30. I got a copy of Star Fox 64 3D and Pokemon Sun for $20 before they closed.
That motorcycle thing used to be a jewellery store. There also USED to be a book store here. It got replaced with a small public library but then it just got shut down. I still remember hearing rumors that they were going to put a casino as a last ditch effort to make the mall profitable again. I didn't believe it at the time but a few years later and there it is. Now all that's left is a karate place and the casino for the most part. I remember when the Office Depot finally closed. I wish I had more money when it did cause their sales were insane.
i go here for glasses now and nothing else, used to be fun when i was a kid.
Sad to see this mall go to waste i remember how packed and lively it used to get during the holiday seasons back in the early 2010’s😔😔
Radio Shack, Tom McCanns, Sears, Kay jewelers, New York and Co, Walden Books, A shoe repare place, Sterling optical, Bed Bath and gone, There was a perfume place by Sears, a camara place by Sears, a pizza place, a florist by Caldors, a bank by Caldors, a hair cutting place by Caldors and Sears, A toy store that I can't name by Caldors, that place that sells soaps and stuff was by Caldores, a record store that I can't think of the name at the moment. There was a resterant on the corner next to the shoe repair place. CVS was where the karate place is I think. I'm old. This video makes me feel old. Thanks.
Perfume For Less it was the last store on the left hand side before you reached Sears ..
@@nicks1266 I forgot Thom McCann

Damn, to see it with that many empty stores and it being so empty from how I remember it is pretty sad to me.. So many childhood memories in there...I grew up maybe 5 mins away from that mall, very close to Winona Lake Firehouse in The Town of Newburgh...My Dad and I used to go there a lot..I remember back when the Old Navy in there had a 1950s GMC pickup as a centerpiece of the store..Probably around 2005 or 2006 I wanna say.. Went to Kay-Bee toys a lot when I was a little youngster when they were still open..My dad liked going to FYE and Gamestop...The FYE is gone now...Gamestop too...The pizza place in there..I remember back in the day it was Cosimos Pizza if I remember correctly..I also remember there being a Friendly's Restaurant in there for some time..Where all of those motorcycles are, next to Claire's..That used to be a Kay Jewelers..My parents would take me clothes shopping for school at The Bon Ton and Sears when they were still open...I haven't been there is so many years..Driven past a few times not long ago..I ought stop in one day for old times sake
I used to shop there years ago my kids love kbee toy and hobbies my favorite was bath and body works my husband loved Sears
(GMS) says, This Mall could be great again with the right stores in it!
The GNC has closed since your visit
The Galleria in Poughkeepsie is about 20 min away, and I'm presuming it's most of the same crowd and most of the same stores, and it's not even CLOSE to being dead as some of the Hudson Valley malls you showed. Why do you think that is?
2:19 Its Now A Barber 💈 Shop
2:19 It Used To Be A Fye
I think it won't get any better with store shopping most people order online. shit you don't have to food shopping anymore; you can have your food delivered to your house in few hours
I’m shocked they moved from Middletown and opened that CBD store here.
Galleria rent prices probably became cost prohibitive compared to rent at the Newburgh Mall.
Motor cycle place is new from when I visited
I think it might have been a temporary exhibit, but I'm not sure. Thanks for watching!
Ha ha that’s our mall, and the gnc has closed I’m guessing right after this was filmed .
Bon Ton actually stretched from NY/PA in the east to the Dakotas in the west and as far south as West Virginia. They essentially did the opposite of Macy’s where they kept their regional nameplates in favor of a unified brand. The chain went bankrupt in 2018.
As for the mall? I’d lean dead. As proactive as it was to get Resorts World in there, it doesn’t seem to be benefiting the other tenants. Although frankly I’m honestly surprised the casino isn’t considered an anchor.
Bon Ton's rapid expansion through acquisitions saddled it with a huge amount of debt and eventually kiboshed it.
Orange County Choppers was up I-84 a few miles. Once on a road trip around Christmas I stopped at the Mall to stretch my legs. OCC had a kiosk set up with a couple of their bikes. Junior's GF at the time, you got a few minute of TV face time now and then was manning the booth trying to sell merchandise. Senior after the show ended and everyone hating everyone's guts opened a white elephant of a showroom about 1/2 - 3/4 of a mile south of the mall.
Do they have a food court their I did see any
Nope. They had a restaurant in the center area, but not a food court.
No food court sadly… back in the day, there used to be a Friendlys near the new Casino (that used to be Bon Ton)… there’s also a pizza place, too… it’s on its way out
You should come to The Poughkeepsie Galleria, or to the other place that used to be called South Hills Mall, tht's right next door to the Galleria that i just mentioned. I was there recently taking pictures of the backside of the building for a photo spread called. Urban Desolation.
I have been back to the Poughkeepsie Galleria this year and it sadly has become a dying mall. I was there at 5:00 PM on a Friday and you barely walked by another person during the whole length but the food court was fairly busy. The only original locations that remain are Taco Bell and the Japanese place. There was a deli next to the Japanese place that was there from the beginning and survived for so many years until around 2015. The South Hills Mall no longer exists as a mall. It flipped inside out to where it is outdoor entrance stores like Bob's Furniture, The Christmas Store, Hobby Lobby, etc.
Stay tuned....
Okay, so you did get to see both places, but there's Still the old Dutchess Mall, thar is all but abandoned m and looking something like a post Pocalyptic ghost town out of a sci fi movie.
@@markmcnary1785 I mentioned the Dutchess Mall in another comment for this video. We went there occasionally during the 1980s to go to the arcade and KayBee Toys. There isn't much left as it was demolished to make room for Home Depot. Yes, I drove in the parking lot last year to take photos to show the abandoned structure that used to be Service Merchandise and dead shops to the left of it where one was a liquor store. Lost and gone forever.
The Middletown Galleria mall was on the decline as well, but it seems to have reinvented itself. Rather than relying solely on retail, it is trying to turn itself into an entertainment destination. They added a Round One (arcade with bowling, pool tables, karaoke), added a kid's adventure playground, which was ground floor of the old Sears store (a Gold's Gym takes the second floor). There is also word that the mall owner is working on building condos and apartments next door to the mall in the future as well.
Do 1 on the fish kill mall not far from Newburg. It died About 20 years ago. has a Home Depot and McDonald’s and a bank left the bank and McDonald’s are in the parking lot but really wasn’t a part of the mall. A lot was torn down but the old grocery store is still standing in the far end. I forgot that was the anchor store and I’ll be damned if I can remember what it was I think the sine could still make it out. There was another anchor on the other end, and I forget what that was. And there was a ace hardware in there for ever but now it’s all gone except for Home Depot, which was not there when they tore it down, they built up the Home Depot.
I agree Office depot is a fine store but too specialized to be considered an anchor.
Office Depot is now scheduled to close the end of January, if not Sooner.
All malls are dead. I remember back in the prime of malls, they were bustling with people at all hours of the day, they were warm, cozy, had greenery, and personality. Now... malls are cold empty shells, most of which have been reduced to community centers. Check out the Jefferson Valley Mall in Yorktown Heights if you haven't already...
There was a KB Toys and also a arcade
Who ever owns this Mall is Actually Renovating it as we Speak Where Sears used to be they put an O’Riley’s Store in there which is a Hardware store and right next to the Casino they are putting a Planet Fitness in there as well and which comes to where Office Depot used to be I heard rumors they are putting a Restaurant in there but I don’t know how true it is so we will see but at least they are Trying to save the Newburgh Mall Compared to Hull Property group trying to Kill the Hudson Valley Mall that was already dead from the damage they caused instead of trying to save it
@fleabittenadventures Clearly a dying mall, not necessarily a dead mall yet.
Dying: Low but not negligible foot traffic, anchors dwindled to 1 or 0, only things bustling are food court or nothing
Dead: Not keeping lights on/dark corners, leaky roof, homeless sleeping inside => negligible safety/foot traffic
I would suggest that a dying mall could still do something to revive with some capital infusion. The antique car displays are a fair shot but you could also do raffles for coupons to remaining stores, central playground for small kids, etc. which might eventually help build traffic back up.
The casino seems to be the first part of a potential rebound. Owners have other plans in place like a renovation, new dining options, reopening the library, and bringing in a new tenant in the former Sears.
Dude i havent been to that mall in a year, wtf what happen to half the stores
It’s a dying mall. Too many closed stores and no anchor stores. The local mall near me has Nordstrom, Macys Women’s Store, Macys Men’s Store, Macys Home Store, and a large Old Navy. Those are anchor stores not Office Depot. So sad seeing so many malls going away. So far that hasn’t been the case in my neck of the woods. Malls are doing well and a few new ones popped up and they are doing well. I guess it also depends on demographics. I live in an affluent part of California and people like to shop it appears 🤷🏼♀️
i worked at chess king in this mall when it opened. i could probably identify 80% of these stores
Who remembers nicks restaurant back in the 90s tho???
I’d maybe call office depot a jr anchor.
I've had so many memories of this mall before the casino was there you're correct there was a caldor but there was also a dentist office along that one wall was a friendly's and a KB Toys. Where the cars were used to be a Kay Jewelers and there used to be an FYE as well across the way the office Depot covered up one of my favorite places it was an arcade called time out
And that serious I used to work in a shoe department making 325 an hour that was with commission and the biggest reason I got let go I'm pretty sure had to be for my ex-girlfriend who worked at the David's cookies in center Court where those cars are now she locked the register three times in an hour and then went to me to complain about it dead no dying definitely it's a shame to see this mall that I used to go to constantly look the way it does now
it is sadly a dead mall but there is hope as it is going to be remolded into a entertainment mall.
Resort World is waiting for the the mall to close, so they can build a high rise hotel from the rest of the mall. Why else would you locate in a dying mall. Cheap real estate. Cha Ching$$$
So what are some stereotypes of a dead mall? I noticed the martial arts place, but what else?
Eyeglass stores
withgo casino for an Anchor It far from dead it need to find something other than retail to fill some spaces like doctor offices Clinics banks so on In Canada they are turning malls in to Condo's awith restaurants, Banks Clinic hearing center place to get eye glasses Super market like self contained housing Wiith its own built in Down town
imagine being the person who sold the mall for $10 then watching the people you sold it to resell it for $7million
**boostmobile is still in biz!!!! WOW!!!!**
****PLEASE DO THE JEFFERSON VALLEY MALL DOWN ON RT6 , right when you get off the taconic state parkway, you make a left.... and then its on the right hand side....

SO PLEASE DO THE JEFFERSON VALLEY MALL ON RT6!!! - 650 Lee Blvd, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598
He actually went to the JV mall recently, look back at his older videos
I Know Where The Children's Place Is Now Abandoned And Over There Is Now Abandoned Over There And The Ninja Place Is Still Open
The Poughkeepsie mall is way better
It isn't a mall it is a casino and boardwalk
When it was poppin it wasn’t a good mall. It’s in a hood ass area where stuff happens all the time and lots of stealing.
With the monstrous property tax in NY, even with tax breaks, it's hard to figure how these empty malls have survived as long as they have. They will fall in the hands of the taxman eventually if not repurposed quickly. That casino is very unusual, and hope it works out.
How can the mall WIHT A CASINO be dead? That will keep it alive.
The casino will probably be fine. Not so sure about the mall though.
Dead mall
Have you ever been to Newburgh ?
Well, then you would understand why it’s dead and never coming back.
No, never been, other than when I went to this mall.
Look at the city of Newburgh racial demographic….all you need to know.
