We bought a good amount of decent quality furniture at good prices from Big Lots (Torrington, CT location) over the years and were often times our best option to avoid having to shop out of town. We would sometimes find really good deals on food items but overall I'm not overly impressed with the prices or quality. They will be closing in November, and it seems sad and ironic that in times of inflation that a DISCOUNT store would be struggling. You'd think they would be able to survive if anyone could.

I agree with you big lots is mostly junk. I noticed at the very end of the video you showed two grey shopping carts. Those were super kmart shopping carts.

I've been through there multiple times. Far from a ghost town. I watched the Natick Mall get built as well as I returned from the Gulf War, and began my college studies at Framingham State College in 1992. I question the integrity of your data.

Big Lots was decent twenty years ago. Later they decided to focus on furniture. Cheap quality furniture. The general merchandise has been like what you see here for a long time. They did this to themselves. Stores like Ocean State have a much better selection at better prices.

Never liked Big Lots .

Such a big store, stocked up with goods, but almost zero customers. It's a waste to keep that one store open. Might as well down size or shut it down completely. The lights are all on BUT wattage probably low, to keep costs down.

JC PENNY WAS A,FAVORITE OF MINE AS A KID. OURS WAS LOCATED IN THE AUDUBON SHOPPING CENTER IN AUDUBON N.J. AND WAS A FREE STANDING JC PENNY. WHEN I WAS YOUNG I GOT PICTURES WITH THE BRADY BUNCH KIDS WHO WERE RELEASING AN ALBUM. AND ONE OF THERE STOPS TO PROMOTE THE ALBUM WAS AT THIS PENNYS.THOSE PICTURES MAKE EVERYONE SMILE WHEN THEY SEE THEM ON MY DEN WALL.

I don't think the current owner has any intention on keeping it going at this point. I've heard that Shotts wants a lot to rent space and that is the big thing that keeps other businesses from moving in. Both the GameStop and Kay Jewelers that are still local had shops in there at one point. Its sad because the Lewiston Mall across the river is dead and I do agree that the Auburn Mall is a nice space and could be better.

I didn't realize that you're from the Manchester area. I lived there for many years and I'm still amazed at how well the Buckland area is doing. I was at the Men's Warehouse last week and shocked at how busy the Buckland Mall and Target / Lowes are. Keep up the great reporting!

Ah, K-Mart in the 70s and 80s. Get up on a summer Saturday morning, go with Mom and Dad. Mom was buying clothes, dad wanted to look at paperback books or maybe the hardware department. Leaf through the Heavy Metal records I wasn't allowed to buy. Read the MAD Magazine trade paperbacks with dad. Stroll over to the Atari demo cabinet for some free video games (at 1 minute a play before you were booted out to the main menu.) Then over to the Cafe for lunch, or dinner if it was late enough in the evening. Mom'd get a tuna salad, me and sis a hotdog and fries. Dad would get whatever fish they were having. Might get a Hot Wheels car or a choose your own adventure paperback if we had the money. Later in the 80s might try and get a game on clearance for the Atari, or a little later my VIC-20 or C64. those were the days. Now they're gone.

Big Lots! used to be worth going to back in the day because they had left over items that major retailers couldn't sell off. When the items and product line were discontinued Big Lots! would purchase the left over stock the major retailers couldn't sell and they'd sell it at a handsome discount. Big Lots! used to have a very good toy selection back around the time HILLS and AMES were still active because Big Lots! would buy the left overs from those two retailers that couldn't be sold off. Sadly they have been trying to be like their competition selling all kinds of random garbage at a fake discount price to stay relevant. Because of that they have become irrelevant and rather pointless in this day and age. Especially with places like Five Below that specializes in selling cutesy nick nack stuff aimed at kids. Kind of like how Radio Shack's decline happened the moment they started becoming just another cell phone kiosk and retailer of a very small selection of over priced LCD tv's. Instead of just sticking to what they were good at which was electronics parts, rc-cars, weird devices and impossible to find adapter cables that only Radio Shack sold. I have a portable keychain Digimon that I bought at our own Big Lots! many years ago that's still in the box. I bought it around the time all portable Tomagachi's and digi-pets fell out of popularity with the youth of my age range. All other retailers stopped selling them because they lost their popularity but Big Lots! was selling off the left over stock so I got mine for cheap. I mainly bought it as a collectable rather than something to carry and play with so it's remained in the box. I'd say this was probably sometime around 2004/2005. Maybe earlier.

The Big Lots stores around my area are never like the bright shiny stores in the commercials. I go there maybe once or twice a year and will not miss it.

Was actually a fun mall to visit and work at back in the day. Worked there in the late 90s.

I've never seen a dangerous elevator sign at a mall, but the past year or more, I'd seen some non-working broken escalators at Roosevelt Field Mall here on LI. They do eventually fix them, at least. I was in Bloomingdale's there last week, and at least their interior escalators and elevators all work fine.

One thing I cannot fathom lately is why Superdry never opened a single store on L.I. NY in any of the malls. I think there are some in NYC, and there is one in Queens Center Mall, supposedly.

We used to have some Bradlees back in the 70s and 80s down on LI NY. I didn't realize it was based up in Braintree MA in the first place. They went under around March 2001 apparently. There was that huge, four floor Bradlees/Mays Dept. store at Union Square #4 in NYC on the SW area of the square, for a number of years, which opened in 1993 or so. Of course that went out just after 2003 or so.

I use to buy dog pee pads and some camdy at mine. But then the pandemic hit and the prices got crazy. Now I go to Burlington for them. Burlington is like the new mini kmart 😆

The glass elevator is definitely a Westinghouse. Westinghouse’s in malls have a button on the side sometimes.

they closed few here in NY in my area then opened a massive one about 2 yrs ago....there is never anyone in it...but I love going in for there is no lines and their summer patio deck stuff is good and really cheap......

Big Lots used to be a great store. Then they turned into a mini Kmart, with the terrible customer service to match. I used to shop there all the time. Now it’s been years since I stepped foot in one.

This was my Dads fav store before he passed. Ours closed about 8 or 9 years ago.

Shame I used to like to get herr’s chips and snacks there they are sold normally in PA where I am from but you could get them there. Guess now just Amazon now.

I live fairly close to that Mall, and pass it daily on my way to work. Like most Malls throughout the country it's dying a slow, miserable death. I only stop in because Newbury Comics moved there, and that's where Hot Topic is located. Otherwise, I'd never enter that place. I remember in the very early 2000's in the summer you could barely move in that place. The food court was always completely full, and every store was near full capacity. I stopped in this summer for the first time, in quite a few years, and realized that the Mall was almost empty on a Saturday afternoon. I was able to park within the first two rows. Pretty close to the food court entrance. Which would have been nearly impossible a decade ago. The only busy part of the Mall was the Round One Game Lab up on the second floor where the old Sports Authority store was located. I was kind of sad to see the Mall that empty in the middle of the summer. I was a mall rat there back in the late '90's early 2000's. The absolute worst part was the disgusting prices stores are charging. I stopped into a shoe store and happened to see a pair of sneakers that I thought about buying. Why not? They were right there in front of me. Yeah! That didn't happen when I realized the store was charging $120 for the same sneakers I could get on their website for $80. I checked a few different stores and it was the same everywhere. If it wasn't for two stores in that place I'd probably never step foot in the Maine Mall ever again. There technically isn't any reason for anyone to shop there anymore. You can go onto company websites and buy the same exact stuff they have in their stores for nearly 1/2 the cost of shopping at their retail stores. There is no incentive to retail store shop anymore. You'd have to want to throw away money to actually shop at a store. 😔

The Big Lots in my city was short lived maybe 2006-2010? I never went there because at the time I thought it was just furniture. I agree most of this stuff looks like junk. Id much rather pay a little extra for items that will last and not break instantly.

The signs look an awful lot like the liquidation company signs. I know Big Lots sold a lot of overstock, etc, but I wonder too if a bunch of even lower grade junk was brought in for the closings. Also it is really sad and kinda scary to see the economy in such a mess. SO MANY retailers and restaurants shutting down. Thanks Tom!

My local Big Lots is closing soon too. I never really shopped there much.

New England is opening up too many discount chains. Ollie’s reminds me of a scaled down Big Lots.

For a time, Big Lots! used to have stuff you couldn't get anywhere else. But, with the coming of the internet that became a thing of the past. I knew they were in trouble when they spent a lot of money to bring in frozen food coolers so they could sell ice cream, tv dinners and the like, only to take them all out less than two years later.

Portcon Maine, Maine's biggest Geek Con happens right across from the Maine Mall at Double Tree too. So they get a lot of people from there going to the mall, they're super supportive of the Con with some of the stores and even food places giving discounts for us.

That ceramic figure you picked up we used to make in ceramics back in the 1970s. They were called 'Smileys'. They came as different people like cheerleaders,policemen,baseball players and many others.

Good store for cleaning supplies. I won’t miss it but I do miss the Christmas Tree Shops. 😊
