Rocky and its sequels are often assumed to be a bunch of testosterone-fueled macho guy movies, but they're largely mistaken, particularly with this first film. It's very much a love story that uses the sport of boxing as a backdrop. It also addresses the existentialism that a lot of people go through in their lives, that desire to be more than they are and do something meaningful in their lives, even if it's just to prove that they're "not just another bum from the streets".
Same with the Rambo series. From 2 onwards they are the epitome of 80's action films but First Blood is a pretty serious movie about PTSD and Stallone's performance was spot on in that too.
Mickey does say that he never gave Rocky much of a chance because he chose to be Gazzo's hired muscle rather than focus on his boxing career. But Rocky represents anyone who had promise and potential but ended up getting overlooked for one reason or another, and that's relatable to a lot of people who feel like they never got the opportunity to live their dreams or achieve greater success in their lives. The fight didn't end in a tie. It was a split decision, meaning it was a very close fight and the winner needed to be decided by who won the most rounds of the fight as determined by three judges. In boxing, you win a round if you land more punches or score more knockdowns than your opponent. The judges ruled that Apollo had won the fight, but the movie doesn't really focus on that because by its end, it almost doesn't matter who won. Rocky "went the distance" by surviving all 15 rounds like he wanted to, and he won Adrian's love.
I completely agree. For a boxer like Rocky to last 15 rounds against the current world champion, that is a big deal and that means a lot. Even though Rocky didn't "win" the fight, he still won in other ways and had great success.
Apollo won. There was one shot inserted into the climax of Apollo raising his arm and celebrating, but it was so quick because it was so inconsequential to Rocky and Adrian as they're shouting each other's names. Rocky II, in my humble opinion, is the best Rocky film. I know it's not the one that won the Oscars and I know it's not the original, but from a standpoint of entertainment, for me, it trounces every other Rocky film.
Rocky I, II, and VI (Rocky Balboa) are tough to choose the best. But I got 1 6 2 3 5 4, as my order. But def one of the best franchises of all time. So many gems.
@@ShreeNation Then you must have someone else edit your reactions. You really can't miss it as most other reactors see it. A little criticism here but still a good video.
Apollo won in a split decision.. 2 judges scored the fight for Apollo, 1 scored it for Rocky.. Rocky was inspired when World Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali gave an unknown club fighter, Chuck Wepner (aka "The Bayonne Bleeder "), a shot at the greatest title in the world, in March of 1975. Stallone, broke at the time, went to see the fight on a closed circuit telecast at a movie theater in L.A. As a matter of fact, Ali's boxing style and personality are mirrored by Apollo. Dancing to the right, hands low, dodging punches by moving his head back and from side to side, etc. Plus, Ali was a showman, always entertaining the crowd. He was literally the most famous person in the world. Not just the most recognizable athlete..But the most famous person...in the world. The fight was supposed to go a few rounds, but Wepner shocked the world by taking Ali into the 15th round--and even knocking Ali down in the 9th round! (You can still watch it on RUclips 💖) Ali knocked Wepner out in the 15th and easily won the fight, but the fight inspired Sylvester to think: What if the fight was closer? The rest is history. Also, Ali surprised Stallone onstage at the Academy Award show in 1977. It was really funny and Stallone was shocked--and in awe🤣 It's also on RUclips. Wepner is still alive. It took years for Stallone to acknowledge his inspiration but he finally did. By the way, Rocky would have been paid the $150,000 win or lose. Judging by what Ali made in the early to mid 1970's, Creed would have made between $2 and $5 million. GREAT reaction!!!
DAVE, I GREW UP IN BAYONNE AND WAS A SENIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL IN 1975 WHEN WEPNER FOUGHT ALI. I THINK HE GOT A MILLION DOLLARS FOR THE FIGHT IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN!! HE WOUND UP BUYING A BAR A FEW BLOCKS FROM WHERE I LIVED AND GOT INTO SOME BAD SHIT!! THERE'S A GREAT FILM WITH LEIF SCHRIVER (RAY DONOVAN CHARACTER) PLAYING THE ROLE OF CHUCK WEPNER CALLED BLEEDER OR THE BLEEDER!! ARE YOU FROM JERSEY??
Glad you enjoyed the scene with Adrian and Rocky in the apartment the first time. So many people get so uncomfortable and feel like he's forcing himself on her.
It's an underdog story as well. Those turtles Stallone has today (cause turtles can live very long) and Buttkus was actually Stallone's real dog. Even though Stallone did movies in the 70's, mostly small roles, he was also broke and he was so broke that he had to sell the dog. But when Stallone sold the script for Rocky (in which he wrote in only three days), he bought the dog back (for a higher price than what he sold the dog for originally) and the dog is in the movie. Originally the studio wanted Ryan O'Neal (Love Story, What's Up, Doc? and Barry Lyndon) in the lead, but Stallone insisted he play Rocky or they wouldn't get the script. Did you know what Stallone also did in the 70's? Porn. No kidding, he was in a porno movie called Party at Kitty and Stud's (which was later re-named The Italian Stallion just to cash in on Rocky's succeés). Believe me, it's a good thing he didn't stick to porn cause Stallone isn't exactly...well equipped, if you know what I mean ;P XD =P
It wasn't an outright porn. It had a little bit of fellatio and S&M. It was more of an art-house experimental movie with sex mixed in, which several other actors have done.
Rocky is one of the most consistently good movie series out there. They get a bit strange as time goes on and the quality has its ups and downs like any franchise, but overall, almost every entry has something of great value. You're gonna enjoy this ride.
I did like the others, except Rocky IV. Too much Cold War propaganda and brash patriotic drumbeating. I even liked Rocky V and Balboa. And to my pleasant surprise, I enjoyed the Creed movies too.
Burt Young nails his character Paulie. I believe he is essential to the story as he is in direct contrast to Rocky. By putting a character like Paulie in the movie it raises Rocky’s character even higher. I also believe Paulie wasn’t just out to exploit Rocky. They are truly friends. They just have extremely different personalities.
The scene where Rocky was punching the sides of beef should be terrifying which is why Tony "Duke" Evers (Apollo's training/manager) is concerned cuz Paulie said Rocky was breaking the ribs which are far more dense than human ribs. That scene where Rocky is talking with Adrian about going the distance and proving that he wasn't just some bum from the neighborhood that's no longer Rocky Balboa talking it's Sylvester Stallone pouring out his concerns & hopes
The Italian Stallion is a little joke in there, too. Stallone translates as Stallion. Before Rambo and Rocky, Stallone starred in a soft core movie called The Party At Kitty And Stud’s. It was his first film and he starred as Stud. It was re-released after Rocky as ‘The Italian Stallion’ to capitalise on his new fame.
Adrian getting in Paulie's face and yelling "I'm NOT a LOSER!" is one of my favorite moments in film. The great thing about the Rocky movies is that every character develops, not just the main protagonist. Adrian, Apollo, Mick, and even Paulie (some, eventually).
There's a movie that I've seen that I've heard promoted with the words "It's like _Rocky_ on Ice." It's called _Cool Runnings_ and it's about the first Jamaican bobsled team. I think that's the main reason they've never made any sequels to it which is unfortunate, because _I_ think it's a pretty good movie.
Wow you reacted exactly what Sylvester Stallone wanted people to react like. We all felt this back in the 70s (us old people) but to see beautiful young people still feel this way all these decades later is just amazing! Thank you for uploading this.
I really loved it when you were talking about Paulie and you said, "I like this actor because he's doing a great job making me hate him." The actor, Burt Young, is like the complete opposite of Paulie in real life; he's an artist, a playwright, a novelist and has written two screenplays, on top of being an actor. He's like a renaissance man.
Micky is played by Burgess Meredith. He's an actor from an _earlier_ time. He _also_ played the Penguin in the 1960's _Batman & Robin_ and Grandpa in _Grumpy Old Men_ and _Grumpier Old Men._
You had very refreshing reactions to certain elements...two in particular... Your finding Mickey's personality amusing is what mine was. So many other reactors were horrified by how "rude" they thought he was. His abrasive manner was extremely entertaining to me. Also, your realization that Rocky was gently desiring Adrian's kiss in the apartment was right on-point. Other reactors' impatience with the scene had them looking in with horror. "Oh, he's forcing her..." Your take was very unusual and appreciated.
Fun facts: Rocky was Stallone's second attempt at a sports themed film. The first was "Paradise Alley"; a film about a wrestler, trying to make it big. -The rounds were shot in reverse order because it was easier to start with the fighters, all beaten up and then remove makeup for every earlier round. -This film had a 1.1 million dollar budget and made over 220 million. -The street singer is Frank Stallone, Sylvester's brother.
I really enjoyed how effortlessly you picked apart the real meaning and message of so many scenes... This is such a heartwarming, touching, tender and uplifting story, and you just seemed to get it right from the start like you'd seen it a bunch of times already. Of course the way you described it was much better than my simple explanation. I'm not doing a very good job of finding the words to say what I was feeling watching your reaction, so I'll just say this..... Yo, you did real good, I really enjoyed watching this with you
I'm pretty sure Mickey was talking about sex (or climaxing) weakening the legs. I've heard that before, but I don't know how true that is. The love story is probably the best part of the entire series. Also, Paulie's an asshole 🤣. Apollo won, but the story continues...
I think it's an old school thing about basically if you've ever had weak knees after you've had sex and an orgasm then that's what they're talking about!! I'm not sure whether it has any long-term effect that to me seems like something that's temporary for example if you have sex the night before the fight then maybe it's an issue!!
Great reaction & analysis! I absolutely love the Rocky and Creed series, there is nothing like it in cinema, where we get to follow a character( Rocky ) from age 30 to 74. ( 6 Rocky movies & 2 Creed movies) and Stallone wrote 7 of the 8 movies: all the Rocky movies & Creed II.( Ryan Coogler director of "Black Panther" wrote the original "Creed" movie) Everything that happens in Rocky's life mirrors something that happened in Stallone's life. Stallone couldn't break into being a mainstream actor just like Rocky couldn't break into Big Time professional boxing. Stallone had always gotten small parts as a bad guys usually with no lines and even had a soft porn. When Stallone tried out for a roll for the movie "The Godfather" and couldn't even get a role as an extra, he decided to start writing movie roles for himself. After watching the fight between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner he was inspired to write the script for Rocky. The studios loved the script, but didn't want Stallone to star in it. Finally he got a movie studio to produce it as a low budget movie starring Stallone. he got paid for the script but acted in it for free. The small movie written and starring Stallone who was almost an unknown a year before, won the 1977 academy award for best movie of the year and propelled him into stardom. I think all the Rocky and Creed movies are great except I think Rocky 5 is just okay. I think the 2021 director's cut of Rocky 4 ," Rocky IV the Ultimate Director's Cut: Rocky verse Drago" is much better movie than the original 1985 theatrical cut of Rocky IV. Can't wait to see your reactions to all the Rocking & Creed movies! Ps Apollo won, since there was no knockout it was in the hands of the judges. Each judge scores who won each round and at the end of fight each judge tallies their points and gives a score. One of the judges scored Rocky as the winner and two of the judges scored Apollo as the winner.
To me the genius of this movie which Shree experienced is at the end most people don't pick up who won but then they have that same moment of "it doesn't matter". So smart and intentional. They tell you who won but it is very subtle and kind of in the background which is how the whole movie is. It's a story about a boxer, but that is almost in the background, it's the people and the relationships and life journey that is up front.
Ironically, the Paulie actor (Burt Young) was the only main cast guy with a boxing background. Everyone else pretended to be a boxer, whilst he pretended to be a non-boxer. 😆
Sorry for being away so long. Hope you're feeling well. Great reaction, I love the Rocky flicks. If you wanna watch the absolute best Stallone movie I've ever seen, watch Copland. His best acting is on full display. Take care, be safe!
Wanting to go to the distance means wanting to go off 15 rounds where the judge is make the decision rather than getting knocked out. But today championship fights are only 12 rounds. Creed one by split decision two judges gave it to him one judge gave it to Rocky
I'M ONLY ABOUT 15 MINUTES INTO YOUR REACTION BUT I THOUGHT I WOULD JUMP ON HERE AND COMMENT THAT YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE THE ROCKY SERIES I BELIEVE IF YOU ARE ENJOYING THIS FILM!! I THINK THAT MOST FOLKS WOULD AGREE THAT ROCKY 1 THROUGH 4 WERE GOOD ROCKY 5 EHH, NOT GREAT, BUT ROCKY BALBOA WHICH WOULD BE THE SIXTH FILM IN THE ROCKY SERIES MADE UP FOR IT IT WAS ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT AND I CAN'T WAIT FOR YOU TO GET TO IT!!! ALL I WANT TO SAY IS REMEMBER THE LITTLE GIRL THAT SAID "SCREW YOU CREEPO" WHEN YOU GET TO ROCKY BALBOA!! ENJOY THE ROCKY RIDE!! THEN THERE ARE SEVERAL CREED MOVIES TO ATTACK ONCE YOU'RE DONE WITH THE ROCKYS!
Apollo won by split decision, meaning two of the judges scored the fight for him and one judge scored it for Rocky. But the way it's filmed underscores its importance because all Rocky is concerned about is finding Adrian and having her by his side. He went the distance, and that's all that mattered. So you were spot on to miss who won, and it absolutely didn't matter.
The actor who played " Mickey " was also in " The Twilight Zone " & "Batman " the original tv show as the 🐧. The actress was also in " The Godfather " . I'm also left handed , but I play a right handed 🎸.
In fighting back then they said women weaken legs because when you ejaculate you lose testosterone. So during training you don’t want to lose that. I think it’s been scientifically proven false now. But this is the 70s they had their theories back then.
Not sure if you heard it; since you were curious about the result of the fight, but it was announced that Apollo won the fight by split-decision. It meant that two of the three judges scored the fight for Apollo, one judge scored for Rocky. Great reaction. I hope you’ll continue with the other Rocky films; as well as the Creed spin-off movies.
Shree, I'm so stoked that you're reacting to one of my favourite franchises and characters of all time. I loved your reaction to this and can't wait for you to get to the others. Rocky and Adrian are one of the best on-screen couples. I love the way that Rocky asks Adrian to the basketball game. Did you notice he can't look at her while he asks because he's afraid of what she might say? The franchise has so many great supporting characters though. Mickey is amazing, and I found I've warmed to Paulie as the series has progressed. He was truly loveable in the Rocky Balboa movie. I love how you picked up on Adrian’s trauma so early. It wasn't a boyfriend, just the way Paulie treats her, and maybe she expects Rocky would do the same. The scene with Rocky in the bar though, talking about how the bartender never took a shot, I think Rocky is upset because he called Apollo a "jig clown" which is an insult. Rocky wasn't taking things out on random people. Gotta say though, as much as I love the franchise, I'm somewhat upset that Buddy (Gazzo's driver) never got a beating for the things he said to Rocky. I really loved your analysis of the scene with Adrian in Rocky's apartment after their first date. A number of reactors seem to think Rocky is a bit too forceful. He seems to push a little (because if he didn't they'd never get together), but never enough to make her feel uncomfortable. The whole asking and telling thing you spotted was such a great observation. Adrian could've said no (and I feel Rocky would've accepted that), but she didn't. Crikey, I love how you picked up on Rocky venting to Mickey after he left his apartment, but never to his face. From all my years of watching this I've never spotted that. The "Why don't you just make the meat, okay?" scene is amazing too. I love how Rocky is man enough to realise he screwed up here. That's such a lovely scene. Adrian expects Paulie, but that's not who Rocky is. I may be wrong here, but the scene when Rocky walks out for the fight, I believe Paulie says "look at my face, it cost me $200", and not look at my date, which to me sounds so sketchy! One thing I've noticed with reactors is that when Creed gets knocked down for the first time, they think he's either pissed or his ego is bruised. I read it differently though, he's on another planet for a little while because he took such a huge punch. The guy seems dazed to me. For a few seconds the guy doesn't know where he is. I love how you picked up on Rocky's temper as well. I don't think anyone else has ever done that. I thought the same thing myself after Rocky took that headbutt in the first fight. He went from someone who was dead on their feet and could hardly breathe, to a complete monster. That's an important spot, and shows how Rocky can dig deep when he needs it, which is something he does a lot in the franchise. The final scene where Rocky and Adrian meet in the ring. The first thing he says is "where's your hat?" The guy is so into her that he spots everything. And then they say they love each other, Christ, what an ending! Shree, I can't wait for you to get to the other movies. You've got an instant subscriber here. I even clicked the bloody bell! That guy at the ice rink though. "8 minutes!" "3 minutes!" "Time!"
Yayyyyy!!! Time for Rocky 2 ! You won’t be disappointed .. Best sequel ever!! I saw this in1976.. I was 8. This movie was amazing since Day 1 . Academy award nominated . The Best
The Rocky movies are a soap opera about dealing with and overcoming life’s challenges. BTW, there’s a connection with Star Wars. Talia Shire is the daughter of the director of Apocalypse Now, Francis Ford Coppola. George Lucas couldn’t get plans to come through for Apocalypse Now, so he put some of the themes into Star Wars. Han Solo was modeled after that Coppola.
By the way here is the recommendation since you both like Stallone and Schwarzenegger I could recommend escape plan to you and maybe the expendables series which are held by Stallone having those two icons in the same movie was a dream for many four decades
36:55 -- I don't know if it's still the same nowadays, but back then boxers would abstain from sex during training to keep their testosterone levels up. That's what Micky meant when he told Rocky, "Women weaken legs."
43:46, a scene that almost didn't make it in the movie. The producers didn't think they needed it as the meaning of the story was already there but Stallone begged them for it and they finally said yes if it could be done in one take and one take only. Became a #1 scene in the movie.
Adrian's character arc in this is just as good as Rocky's. And Burt Young does a great job playing Paulie. If you liked Burgess Meredith playing Mickey you should watch Grumpy Old Men. He only has a small part but steals the show.
*When he says "women weaken legs" there's an old superstition to not have sex during training leading up to a fight as if orgasm mean weakens the body*
"More than a boxing movie" heard that a lot from reactors when they watch Rocky. In fact, "boxing movies" are often more than just about boxing : Million Dollar Baby, Cinderella Man, Southpaw, The Champ, Poor Boy's Game... PS : Great comments/analysis.
True. I think the name is Butkus, as in the football player. Also he had to sell the dog before making the movie because he was broke. He ended up buying it back.
Also the actor who plays Adrian's brother was in a movie with Rodney Dangerfield called " Back To School " . Sylvester Stallone was also in another movie before this with Henry Winkler called " The Lord's Of Flatbush ". I saw a recent interview on the actor who played the brother Paulie , and he said his favorite Rocky was the 1st one . It was Creed that won , but by a split decision . All Rocky wanted to prove to himself is that he can go the distance . And this movie is actually a love story of a couple . The boxing is a very small part of it .
Todays 2022 prices Rocky made $220 (adjust from 1975s $40) and Spider Rico made $90 bucks for $17 - so for a fight it still sucks.... but 200 is 200. In the early 1970s rent was $100 to $200 (roughly)
Rocky's $40.55 he gets for winning the opening fight of the movie in 1975 would be the equivalent of just over $200 today. Still chump change for amateur boxing, but sounds a little better. I imagine that rundown apartment he lived in couldn't have been more than $150 a month.
You should get Rocky on DVD as it has a commentary track of most of the actors, from Talia Shire who played Adrian, Burt Young who played, Paulie, the director John G. Avildsen and Carl Weathers. Probably the best commentary ever. Lots of insightful things, like Talia Shire, how she was to develop her character including picking her own clothes, which she got at a thrift store, and her glasses, all her choices. In the kissing scene she and Stallone did. She had the flu during that scene. Carl Weathers was roommates with Burgess Meredith (Mickey). The scene where Rocky was yelling at Mick, they had such a small budget, they filmed in some of the worse places. The little room Rocky was in really stunk of the worst smells. Tons of great info. You should try to find it.
To answer your questions about the outcome and some boxing terminology: "split decision" means the three judges didn't all have the same winner. In this case (with Apollo winning) two judges chose him, one chose Rocky. "Unanimous decision" is where all judges agree. Back in this day championship fights were scheduled for 15 rounds (they've since been shortened to 12), so the "8-7" you heard was one judge's score, 8 rounds to 7. Any fight that doesn't end in a knockout or with the referee stopping it goes to the judges. Hope this helps.
I know this is pretty random and off-topic to this reaction video, but that banjo sounding music playing at the start of the video reminded me of the Chocobo Farm that the characters visit in Final Fantasy VII after leaving Midgar. It brought back some fond memories. 🐥
Mickey is the great, great Burgess Meredith. He's got a career that goes back to the 1930's. And he's like bacon - he makes everything he's in, better. He has THREE amazing Twilight Zone episodes, TWO Oscar nominations and One Emmy award. He died in 1997 but two of his last performances (Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old Men) are legendary. Those movies will make every reactor's list eventually.
Creed won. 3 judges- 2 went with creed and 1 for rocky but when the movie cut it was supposed to capture the highest moment in his life. He went the distance which in his mind was his measure of knowing he wasn’t a bum and he was in the arms of Adrian, the woman he loved and that’s where it cut. It was the peak moment in his life at that point.
Rocky is about getting a chance. A lot of people can do great things when given a chance. And when you get your big chance, you give it your absolute all. And then, win or lose, you'll be standing tall at the end of the day. Stallone wrote Rocky after watching a clunky, no-name fighter, Chuck Wepner knock down Muhammad Ali, who was arguably boxing's greatest fighter of all time. Wepner almost went the distance, losing in the 15th and final round.
You can hear in the background (as Rocky and Adrian are saying “I love you” in the forefront), that it was a split decision in favor of Apollo Creed. So it was the judges decision that Apollo won. It was purposely done in the background because it’s not the most important thing in the scene. 🙂
You're right, it doesn't matter who won the fight. This was a love story about Rocky and Adriane, and they won. As for the fight, there were three judges; two thought Creed won, while one judge went for Rocky, meaning Creed won the fight by way of split- as opposed to unanimous decision.
$40 in 1976 (the amount Rocky won for the opening fight of the movie) is about $208.30 in today’s money; so it is not as pathetic as getting 40 bucks nowadays for getting your face smashed in but it is still not that impressive either (The 70s was the first decade when inflation really started to broaden the gap between cost of living and average wages) And the $150,000 for the Apollo fight is $781,136.20... So yup: Not too shabby! For more Stallone greatness, I highly recommend: - Assassins (1995) - Demolition Man (1993) - Cliffhanger (1993) - Tango & Cash (1989)
Rocky won the Oscar for best picture. The story of the southpaw is what Rocky used as the inspiration for this movie. The south paw is a retelling sort of. As long as the eggs are cold he’s fine. He hast to keep his testosterone up for training until the fight. Sex will drain him of that and make his training much more difficult. Mickey died the same day as Princess Diana so there was not much respect given to Mickey who was played by Burgess Meredith. It was really sad. That meant more to people than princess di
All the Rocky films are really good and it does a good job of incorporating a lot of good aspects such as emotion thrill romance humor I mean it had a lot and it worked 😊
as you said it a few times now, he didn't buff up for rocky, he slimed down for First blood, as that was some years later, the dog was his dog, that he sold before he made rocky, and then got him back after some sucess in movies , the guy he said get a job you bum was his brother frank stallone and paulie was a boxer in real life before he turned to acting
A lot of people has given Mickey shit for telling Rocky to "stay down". Mickey is there for Rocky, not the money. He wants Rocky to win sure, but he loves and cares about him above winning or losing. Rocky's health is on the line, Mickey knows this and that's why he said to "Stay down". He didn't want to cut Rocky's eye, he wanted Rocky to stop the fight but he knew Rocky's heart would not allow it so he had to let Rocky do what he felt he had to do. Rough spot to be know. Letting someone you love and care about do something that can effect the rest of their life cause deep down you know it is their call, not yours. "Damned if I do, Damned if I don't" is probably how Mickey felt.
*WOMEN DO WEAKEN LEGS 100% TRUE* ESPECIALLY WHEN FIGHTING TRAINING BUT THEN AGAIN YOU WOULDN'T KNOW ANYTHING BOUT THAT..LOL 😂🤣 THAT JUST WENT RIGHT OVER UR FKN HEAD 🤣😂
AND I'M PRETTY SURE THAT THIS WAS STALLONE'S FIRST FILM AS AN ACTOR OTHER THAN PROBABLY SOME UNKNOWN STUFF BUT THAT'S WHY HE LOOKS BULKY HERE AND SKINNIER IN RAMBO AND ALSO IN THE NEXT FEW ROCKY FILMS!! HE GOT PAID GOOD FOR ROCKY SO HE WAS ABLE TO HIT THE GYM PROBABLY MORE THAN HE HAD BEFORE AND ALSO PROBABLY ABLE TO AFFORD BETTER NUTRITION AND EATING HABITS TO ELIMINATE MOST OF HIS BODY FAT!!
35:02 "Eh. Eh. Come on. No foolin' _around,_ durin' training, alright? I wanna stay _strong."_ A curious misconception we were under, in the US, at the time; that being intimate, during athletic conditioning, somehow _detracted_ from athletic performance. Now we know, actually, it's quite the _contrary._ That being _celibate,_ during athletic conditioning, detracts from athletic performance.
Yes! It's really a character study, and the character studied just happens to be a boxer
Same with the Rambo series. From 2 onwards they are the epitome of 80's action films but First Blood is a pretty serious movie about PTSD and Stallone's performance was spot on in that too.
“Women weaken legs” simply means no sex during training. Whether or not it’s true, Micky isn’t saying anything about not having a relationship.
Thanks, yeah i definitely missed that scene... can't wait to watch Rocky 2!
Totally agree Frankie about part 2
While there are some nice moments in some of the other Rocky films, to me Rocky I and Rocky II will always be head and shoulders above the rest.
(You can still watch it on RUclips 💖)
Ali knocked Wepner out in the 15th and easily won the fight, but the fight inspired Sylvester to think: What if the fight was closer?
Thank you for this :) I'm glad to hear that this was somewhat inspired by true events👏
Glad you enjoyed the scene with Adrian and Rocky in the apartment the first time. So many people get so uncomfortable and feel like he's forcing himself on her.
Those people are idiots
Buckus is Sylvester's actual dog
Haha! I had no idea😃
It wasn't an outright porn. It had a little bit of fellatio and S&M. It was more of an art-house experimental movie with sex mixed in, which several other actors have done.
"Pauli" and "Adrianne" are so well written. They are clearly victims of parental abuse that manifest as polar opposites.
So true!
Rocky is one of the most consistently good movie series out there. They get a bit strange as time goes on and the quality has its ups and downs like any franchise, but overall, almost every entry has something of great value. You're gonna enjoy this ride.
I can't wait :)
Agreed!
@@ShreeNation wait tell you see Rocky 3 and 4.. paulie sticks with Rocky like a true friend
Hehe smart
Just an additional bit of background, a boxing round is three minutes long, so that was 45 minutes of two guys just beating the shit out of each other
Ooooooooof
Adrian getting in Paulie's face and yelling "I'm NOT a LOSER!" is one of my favorite moments in film. The great thing about the Rocky movies is that every character develops, not just the main protagonist. Adrian, Apollo, Mick, and even Paulie (some, eventually).
Agreed! That was an epic moment.
Thanks for the recommendation :)
Wow you reacted exactly what Sylvester Stallone wanted people to react like. We all felt this back in the 70s (us old people) but to see beautiful young people still feel this way all these decades later is just amazing! Thank you for uploading this.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed 🥲
I really loved it when you were talking about Paulie and you said, "I like this actor because he's doing a great job making me hate him." The actor, Burt Young, is like the complete opposite of Paulie in real life; he's an artist, a playwright, a novelist and has written two screenplays, on top of being an actor. He's like a renaissance man.
That's the thing a lot of folk don't realise about this, at its heart it is a love story. I know you're going to really enjoy this!
Thank you 🥲❤
The bartender didn't need to box to take a shot in life.
Winner of 3 Oscars including Best Picture.
"ADRIAN!"
"ROCKY!"
"ADRIAN!"
"Rocky, I love You!"
"I love you."
🥲
LOL. You HAVE to record your workout to the Rocky Theme!
I definitely will😎
The actor who played Apollo Creed, Carl Weathers, would later appear in "Happy Gilmore" as Chubbs Peterson, the golf pro.
Thank you 🥲
I've trained with guys like Mick. You eventually learn they mean well and care about you, even if you don't care for the way they show it
Rocky has a good soul. After he vented he's aware of getting this once in a lifetime shot so he'll give Mick his once in a lifetime shot.
Apollo was dressed up like George Washington when he was coming to the ring, then he dressed up like Uncle Sam with the big hat
The bum from the dark and street singer, is Sly's brother
Haha awesome!
Thank you for the info :)
apollo won. a "split decision" means that not all three referees voted for 1 boxer. in numbers: it was 2:1 for apollo.
In Rocky 3 and Rocky 4 he gets really "skinny" 😂
1976 won the Oscar for best picture.
You need to watch Rocky 2 and Rocky 3.You won't regret it
I really enjoyed how effortlessly you picked apart the real meaning and message of so many scenes...
Yo, you did real good, I really enjoyed watching this with you
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed 🥲
I'm pretty sure Mickey was talking about sex (or climaxing) weakening the legs. I've heard that before, but I don't know how true that is. The love story is probably the best part of the entire series. Also, Paulie's an asshole 🤣. Apollo won, but the story continues...
I think it's an old school thing about basically if you've ever had weak knees after you've had sex and an orgasm then that's what they're talking about!! I'm not sure whether it has any long-term effect that to me seems like something that's temporary for example if you have sex the night before the fight then maybe it's an issue!!
@@bernardsalvatore1929 it definitely feels like it does lol. I just wasn't sure if the effect lasts long enough to affect training or the fight.
It's still a thing where people believe semen retention makes the testosterone levels higher and makes you stronger
In fairness, I thought Paulie did redeem himself in Rocky V.
Rocky was nominated for 10 academy awards, and won 3 including best picture in 1977. it's a pretty good movie.........lol
This is so inspirational! I'm in tears just reading about Stallone's incredible journey into making Rocky happen🥲 thank you.
Beautiful 🥲
Ironically, the Paulie actor (Burt Young) was the only main cast guy with a boxing background. Everyone else pretended to be a boxer, whilst he pretended to be a non-boxer. 😆
Haha that's epic!
"I'm seventy-six years old..." (toilet flushes.) Genius...
Adrian is the heart and soul of these movies!
Agreed
Two judges ruled for creed. Round scoring 8 rounds Rocky 7 rounds. So apparently a close split decision.
Sorry for being away so long. Hope you're feeling well. Great reaction, I love the Rocky flicks. If you wanna watch the absolute best Stallone movie I've ever seen, watch Copland. His best acting is on full display. Take care, be safe!
Thank you Mick :) Hope you are well, and thanks for watching!
I AGREE STALLONE'S ROLE IN COP LAND WAS FANTASTIC! VERY GOOD MOVIE!!
Wanting to go to the distance means wanting to go off 15 rounds where the judge is make the decision rather than getting knocked out. But today championship fights are only 12 rounds. Creed one by split decision two judges gave it to him one judge gave it to Rocky
Paulie is such a troubled character and Burt Young (who was a boxer irl funny enough) plays him wonderfully
Thank you! I can't wait to go on this Rocky journey 😉
@@ShreeNation don’t forget the Creed films!
Old Mick was one of the great actors of his day. He was the penguin in the Batman tv show and many movies and several twilight zone episodes
*$150,000* in *1976* is equivalent to *$780,000* in *2022*
Apollo won by split decision, meaning two of the judges scored the fight for him and one judge scored it for Rocky.
Thank you for the info, will definitely watch more Rocky movies :)
He gets the $150,000 whether he wins or loses, which is why Paulie is glomming onto him.
*$70* in *76* is equivalent to *$365* in *2022* for an underground fight
Thank you so much, I'm so glad you enjoyed 🥲❤
Yayyyyy!!! Time for Rocky 2 ! You won’t be disappointed .. Best sequel ever!! I saw this in1976.. I was 8. This movie was amazing since Day 1 . Academy award nominated . The Best
Definitely watching Rocky 2😍
If you want to have some fun, go look up Burgess Meredith playing "The Penguin" on the old "Batman" T.V. series. Really funny lines.
Will do ;)
My favorite recurring guest star of The Twilight Zone.
Thank you for the recommendations :)
"It's like someone from reddit in real life" LOLOL amazing!
you really nailed all the character's motivation and viewpoint it's great!
Through Adrian's shyness and Paulie's character
Thank you :)
36:55 -- I don't know if it's still the same nowadays, but back then boxers would abstain from sex during training to keep their testosterone levels up. That's what Micky meant when he told Rocky, "Women weaken legs."
OMG!!! THE THUMB THING HAS ME ROLLING!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤭😃
43:46, a scene that almost didn't make it in the movie. The producers didn't think they needed it as the meaning of the story was already there but Stallone begged them for it and they finally said yes if it could be done in one take and one take only. Became a #1 scene in the movie.
Adrian's character arc in this is just as good as Rocky's.
And Burt Young does a great job playing Paulie.
If you liked Burgess Meredith playing Mickey you should watch Grumpy Old Men. He only has a small part but steals the show.
I will, thank you :)
*When he says "women weaken legs" there's an old superstition to not have sex during training leading up to a fight as if orgasm mean weakens the body*
"More than a boxing movie" heard that a lot from reactors when they watch Rocky.
In fact, "boxing movies" are often more than just about boxing :
Million Dollar Baby, Cinderella Man, Southpaw, The Champ, Poor Boy's Game...
PS : Great comments/analysis.
Thank you :)
Apollo won, just at the end, as Rocky an Adrian hug the voice in the background announced Apollo Creed as the winner
Fun Fact: The Dog Butkus was actually Stallone's dog in real life.
True. I think the name is Butkus, as in the football player. Also he had to sell the dog before making the movie because he was broke. He ended up buying it back.
You'll enjoy the rest of the Rockys as well
Can't wait!
@@ShreeNation at least the first 4
Also the actor who plays Adrian's brother was in a movie with Rodney Dangerfield called " Back To School " .
I would love to own a copy. I'm planning to build a DVD collection of the best films from every decade❤
Thank you for the information :)
Thank you for your great reaction. Rocky 2 is a must see as well but after that, so so.
Thanks for watching :) Can't wait for Rocky 2!
Mahayana Ghandi noticed when the announcer said Apollo Creed, there are 'No Ties' in boxing
'I wonder how Apollo was training'
He thought the fight was a joke. Doubt he trained much at all (but his trainer was super worried)
Talia Shire/Adrian is Francis Ford Coppola's sister, and aunt to Nicolas Cage (his real last name is Coppola).
Damn!😍
I liked him with John Wayne in "In Harm's Way", especially in the scene in the head with Kirk Douglas.
Prepare os lenços, continue a série, as lágrimas vão cair sem dúvidas! Rocky e Adrian um dos maiores casais do cinema se não o maior
Great reaction. Glad I found your channel. Also I’m a southpaw and my thumb does the same thing as yours lol
Awesome! Thanks for watching 🥰
Going the distance means he wants to go all 15 rounds without getting knocked out. That's what going the distance means in boxing.
Well now it's 12 rounds. Lol
You can hear in the background (as Rocky and Adrian are saying “I love you” in the forefront), that it was a split decision in favor of Apollo Creed. So it was the judges decision that Apollo won.
It was purposely done in the background because it’s not the most important thing in the scene. 🙂
Love it :)
You're right, it doesn't matter who won the fight. This was a love story about Rocky and Adriane, and they won. As for the fight, there were three judges; two thought Creed won, while one judge went for Rocky, meaning Creed won the fight by way of split- as opposed to unanimous decision.
So glad you enjoyed it. Fun film series 😁
For more Stallone greatness, I highly recommend:
- Assassins (1995)
- Demolition Man (1993)
- Cliffhanger (1993)
- Tango & Cash (1989)
Thank you for the info, and for the recommendations :)
You're very likeable, wise and kind. Lovely reaction!
Thank you 🥲
Rocky won the Oscar for best picture.
Lol Paulie is the best character in the entire franchise😆.
I agree 💔
