Five Ways to Diagnose Injector Misfires

    This episode is a slightly different to our normal track day style videos. A common problem on Clios are injectors failing and being typically hard to diagnose. We run through five different techniques to help identify which one to replace.
    Often you'll find an injector gone after your car has been parked up for a while. This set of injectors were fine, taken off the car for a few months and upon reinstalling them 1 failed. The might show their face by an engine management light. I noticed the EML flashing once or twice in a couple of months of use so was very surprised to see the effect it was having on the sparkplugs.
    For Clio 172/182s the injector resistance should be around 14.7 ohms but they usually come in at a marginally lower reading.
    As I say in the video, these techniques can be used on most petrol engine cars but do use common sense, not all will be practical on all cars. Diesel injectors work at extreme pressures and have a totally different testing process.

    Nicely done, succinct and to the point. Not too technical either, or else it's explained very well in non technical language. Hopefully, I'll get to the bottom of my misfire soon, electrics checked hence checking out injectors now. Thank you.

    Thanks for making this video, i got an engine light intermittently coming on every so often, think it might be the injectors!

      Cheers dude. If the light is flashing then that’ll be the culprit. On and off solid EML could be lambda.

    Great Video. informative and very entertaining. Don't try the spray pattern test at home LOL . perhaps that cylinder 3 injector was stuck open slightly and poor spray pattern !

    Hey, thanks for this very informational video! I have a different theory regarding the other cylinders running lean: as cylinder #3 is running rich, the lambda sensor tells the injection computer that the engine is running rich, and so the mixture gets leaned to compensate (because the lambda sensor can't tell that only the exhaust from cylinder #3 is rich). It would have to be a massive leak on cylinder #3's injector to cause the fuel pressure to noticeably drop for the other cylinders, in fact I suspect that in order to really drop the fuel rail pressure the injector would have to let so much fuel through it would hydrolock that cylinder.

      Nice theory. The only problem with it is that ecu should rely on readings from labmda sensor only when the engine is hot - isn't it?

      Diagnostic reader suggested injector 4, confirmed this using test 5 - unplugged number 4 and the engine kept misfiring, so had to be the culprit. ECP delivered me a new injector yesterday and problem solved, pretty simple in the end!

    Do injectors on renault captur have 5v going to them or 12v (year 2017)

    Hi do u no what the sensor is behind the dip stick on the engine as I have broken it when removing the injectors I have done this on my 1.2 with same problem thank you.

      I’m not familiar with the 1.2 but it’s either the knock sensor, oil pressure sensor or oil level switch.

    did it smell like rotten eggs ? I’m having multiple random misfires code and I’m wondering if it’s injector related and ht leads/coil packs, or injectors, knowing my injectors are 3 weeks old but they are bigger 330c injectors to run e85, everything was right up until it started misfiring while driving and smelt like rotten eggs, what do you think ?

    Hi could you help me I have the flashing emissions light only when the car is idling as soon as I drive off it goes. My clio sounds ruff any ideas ?

      That could well be the primary lambda sensor. Unplug it and the car will run on a safety map with closed loop. If it runs better than replace it. If not and injectors isn’t the issue look at ignition parts.

      @@TrackItYT I replaced the sensor recently with Bosch ones in the last 2 years in fact. Because of the fuel problem I ran my car really low on fuel and didn’t use it for 4 weeks . As soon as it starts driving my flashing emissions just goes off and I haven’t lost any power either

      That will be an injector. No issue running low on fuel in a plastic tank. Not driving will mean sticking injectors, has happened to me previously.

    If i could like this video a million times i would!! After loads of messin round i checked my injectors after watchin this vid and boom only 3 sprays of fuel!! Pulled the injector out but seams like something else flew out (its dark now) so not sure.. but is there a 'seat'? As the injector sits in the rail too much now? Do u know of a certain part i am describing? Cheers 👍👍👍👍 Dave

      Thanks Dave! Glad it proved useful 😀 Sounds like you didn’t have the flood of fuel I did! Think it’s the retaining clip you’ve lost as it sets the orientation and depth of the injector in the rail. Those springy things can travel miles from the car 😂 the other injectors will have them if you look closely, they’re a C shape

      @@TrackItYT ah no i got that clip, i may not have lost anything? But the injector seams to sit in the rail too much? Or when placed in correct place with that clip seams to have a gap around it? But tomorrow i shall take the whole rail off and take another injector out to see what i may or may not be missing... but atleast i wont be wasting time going to buy a coil pack that i didnt need!       Did you have any luck Dave? I couldn’t think of anything else you’d be missing other than an o-ring but that would be obvious! The c clip should ensure the injector sits in the rail at the correct depth.

      @@TrackItYT yeah sorry it was 'the obvious' (but not so obvious to me at the time) haha it was the lack of o ring that was letting it sit deeper, it was just my o.c.d of doing it at night thinking i must of lost something else (i am still to find one of the coilpacks bolts lost in the bay somewhere 🙈) but injector is en route to me so will have to wait for its arrival, but thanks again and Happy New Year! :-)

    In Honda from 99, the injectors live at 400,000 km and still work. And Renualt is a mockery ...

      Renault injectors for these engines are made by magnetti marelli.
