nice billet enjoyed watching
Really loved watching this! Can't wait to see the final piece!
Great to the point video
I’m excited to see the knife that comes out of the billet.
@@JasonKnightMS I’m generally anti social media but watching your videos is helping Me become a better knife maker
Thank you!!! I love these videos they are so helpful for a new smith thanks
First. I know little about forging. After you cut the end off the billet the grain on both edges were substantial larger than the center. Does that effect the cutting edge after drawing the billet out? Or does the grain get tighter as you go?
Jason your style of teaching and knife making is straight to the point, trade style👌🏼my favourite blade smith by far🤙🏼 (don’t get a big head though😂) cheers from Central Qld Australia 🍻
Awesome! Great video. Can this be done with hammer and anvil? Just take a lot longer?
Jason I am curious why it is you do not use flux. I did not hear an explanation in the video. not sure if I missed it.
I’ll do an explanation in a future video
First
I live in a elderly trailer park .50 and over, no open flames ! I'm screwed
At some point, I would really appreciate hearing some explanation of why you don’t flux, as well as pointers for those of us who are still new to pattern welding.
Thank you for putting such inspirational content for everyone to enjoy.
If your steel is clean and have a tight fit with a properly set hot forge, you can get away with not using flux. Flux is just kind of an insurance policy that can cause problems. Flux can get trapped in the layers if not vacated completely .Let alone the damage it does to your forge lining.
@@erikcourtney1834 yes, clean and tight. What baffles me are those old school smithy from those black and white films era would forge weld without flux, considering the limited tools they have.
tbhz the old days more than likely was using wrought iron. It can be welded all day without flux. All the silicon slag it possesses is the flux.
Mild steel can be welded without flux aswell like wrought. Good fire management is key.
WHAT!?!?! A THUMBS DOWN? THAT'S STUPID! Great video Jason, can't wait to see what you make out of it.
Very cool man. Would like to see you do a Feather Pattern Damascus or even though you would lose material a Peacock feather pattern would be way cool
Jason - long time fan of yours - and I’ve been glued to this channel for the past several Months. I know you are as fascinated by the Japanese katana forging methods as I am. I’ve always wondered if a Damascus billet could be made in the same way they make a Japanese blade? (I.e) no welding - just the rice paper wrapping and slurry / hay between heats? I would love to see an experiment of that. I DO understand that one reason they do this method is to refine the carbon content of the Tamahagane - but it was just a curiosity - can you make Damascus without welding?
Always love getting your notification! Keep up the amazing work! Love your videos and your knives
I'm a Pipewelder by trade and Everytime I see someone using a squirt gun instead of TIG welding a stack I cringe. Nothing wrong with it just my OCD lol
EVEVRY TIME I WATCH JASON KNITE IT GET'S THINKING OF NEW TOOLS TO MAKE FOR MY WOOD WORKING PROJECTS I WOULD LIKE TO SEE JASON.K DO A -T5-- TITANIUM KNIFE 🔪 OR A AX PROJECT IT WILL BE RWALY BAD ASS LIKE ALL HIS OTHER PROJECTS HAVE COME OUT IN THE PAST🤯🤯🤯👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you for answering my questions. I liked the video. Very informative.
Hi Jason Knight What would be your technique for forging Damascus steel ? and would I need to alter any technique with me using a coal forge ? Really enjoy watching your videos there very informative and I learn a lot 👌
Nice pattern. Love the way you just talk through your blades. You could be the bob ross of black smithing
I guess your pushing your forge hard and have the right burner so the atmosphere in the forge has a lack of oxygen and your impressive skills give you the possibility to forge without flux!? I really like your straight forward way of work. Appreciate your videos
Hello from Sweden. I wanted to ask you if you ever tried making a knife from the steel that makes the edge on a big snowplow. I have gotten a pice that I wanted to try to make a Bowieknife from but I’m not sure that it will work. To ad also I’m a beginner at blacksmithing. Best regards/ Robin from northern Sweden
Jason.... are those BI&CH MITTENS in the video? My image is shattered!
I am curious. I understand your background a bit and love your work. I am a retired soldier and I'm looking for a good solid knife. One that is a cross of a fighting knife and a bushcraft survival knife. Somthing that will fit on my belt or vest and will function well in a tactical role, but will also function in bushcraft. Baton wood and the like. Strong and durable for hard use and abuse, light enough enough for combat. Suggestions and or could you do a video making one. Thank you sir.
Got my furnace complete, Scored a Peter Wright 117 lb anvil so time beat some metal. Can't wait for you to smack that into submission and see what comes out !
You are making my knees hurt. If I'm down on the floor it's because of my clumsiness or alcohol maybe also a combination. Also shop policy no alcohol before or during power tool use. Thanks two finger Kenny for the new rules.
I am about to attempt damascus for the first time. So far my tool list is minimum. My question is, is there any benefit/drawback to folding rather than cutting each peice?
Nice to see you making layered steel again. What happened with you not being on Forged In Fire any more ??? Why not use a carbide blade instead of the abrasive wheel cutoff saw ???
Nice "bitch mittens", Jason. Jk, lol. Thanks for the upload.
love the videos keep them coming. Helping me keep from getting stir crazy during this quarantine.
Jason, is there any advantage or disadvantage to using wider plates on the press or power hammer, Will it take away from the PPSI force thus resulting in a long processing time?
What size stock you usually use for your handles for your billets? I tend to go to thin and they bend way to easily.
Great video, I have always thought that one would need to use flux but you proved that’s not the case. Thanks for showing me and other’s this information.
I'd like to see you forge a Damascus billet by hand just to see the technique, but you don't need to since you have a press and power hammer.
Looks like wood grain....Beautiful thing.....Thanks jason...!
Awesome video. I am new to blacksmithing and trying to learn. Thanks
It's not a good practice to grind on the side of the chop saw blade. That can cause the blade to fly apart, and the results can be devastating. As a welder for 41 years, this is a huge safety violation. I respect you and your knife skills, so please don't show that on you videos
Did you build your gas forge, if so then it would be great to see a video on it. If you purchased it, then were can I get one? Thanks.
Enjoyed the video and the simple straight forward explanations
Looks good. I do like your videos. Have you ever thought about getting a band saw and getting rid of the chop saw.
Hey thanks for sharing that, I can never seem to get my metal hot enough in the propane forge, still trying to figure all this stuff out and having a blast doing it, thank god for RUclips and people like you who share and inspire!!!
Awesome informational educational video experience Y'alls
You also had a camera man that didn't know how to use the chop saw. Or the angle grinder. That is why all schools should be required to have a shop class.
Love Damascus & watching you working!!!
Just getting back in forge after multiple sclerosis treatment.... missed it so much
Looks great maybe you could do a video on different types of Damascus and how to basically do those
Great video. But no flux, I would be afraid to try. My luck I would have a bad weld
I was thinking big toe print, but thumb print works. LOL
Great job 👍 is it possible to forge weld mild steel together? I do have forge flux powder
Awesome 🤙🏼
Look forward to the next video! Absolutely love your knives!
So after you set the welds and your ready to start making the blade do you turn the billet to where all of the layers are facing up and down and flatten it out that way? I haven't seen anyone talk about that. I understand stacking to get layers but if you forge it flat the same way you set the welds would that hide all the layers?
You’re a credit to smiths! I get super stoked when I see a new vid from you!
What will happen if you just fold the flattened billet instead of letting it cool and cutting it into sections and welding it into a block again? Will scale get into the folds and ruin it?
It’s always incredible to me how those press dyes suck the heat right out of the metal....
Again, awesome videos!
Mister Knight I love Fordged in Fire and made fixed blade knives in metal shop back in the 1970 in school I caused my teacher nightmares
Can you do a video showing how to get the sharktoorh Damascus pattern?
love watching you work keep up the educating thanks
It just keeps getting better and better! Thanks for the video!!
Fantastic work! I do woodworking and custom engraving but I also absolutely love forging (from a spectators point of view). Some day when I have a big enough shop, I will get a forge in there but as you know... equipment is $$$ and perfecting the craft is lots of time. So I'm happy watching the pros! :)
What did you mean when you said you wanted to get more activity out of the Billet?
Do the mig welds cause any soft or hard spots in the billet?
Would it be possible to make that many layers without the power hammer or press?
That’s “Dope”. Can’t wait to see what it looks like finished
Is there an advantage to setting your welds with the hammer versus the press?
What are your thoughts on log splitter conversions into forge presses?
I'm always to worried my billet will fail if I don't use flux! Lol
I really like the end pattern, and can't wait to see what that billet becomes
about how long did you leave the billet in the forge for heat before you moved to the hammer?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a chop saw versus a hot cut tool?
learn so much watching your vids
I'm really learning a lot from you, thank you sir
Pleasure watching your work sir , uk fan
Jason, I’ve always wondered why use the power hammer when you have the press? Couldn’t you just use the press right from the get go? Love your videos!!
#RideLife both
This is awesome! Nothing beats Damascus.
Is there anything wrong with using Flux?
I love to watch a master in action i have been forging for several years myself by the really learn a lot by watching you thanks
Thanks again for your willingness to share
Damascus is the most beautiful steel in my opinion
Always my favorite judge on forged in fire... great to see you on here!
Gonna do a ladder or twist. I like the twist patterns.
Why not fold the stack instead of cutting?
Push your GMAW, instead of dragging it like it’s SMAW. It will yield much better results. If you’re right handed, you should travel right to left.
Trevor Lee like that’s just your opinion man (The Big Lebowski) 🤪
Thanks for the great vid Jason. I had so much trouble using flux while forge welding-I hate the stuff. After watching your videos I quit using, clean my steel well, weld the plates tight, give the forge a gas rich atmosphere and I can weld all day with great welds and 0 flaws. Thanks again!
patriotbladesmithing_ironworks
Are you having success hot cutting and welding as well with no flux?
Reminds me in this end cut of a clam shell very cool
When forging your blade from a Damascus billet , do you forge “ with the stack” or “against the stack” ? hope you know what I mean. I’ve not yet forged anything but I’m completely obsessed with Damascus patterns. I’m in the process of building my first forge similar to the same style you use. (Obviously not same quality .)
Curtis Smith You can forge it anyway you want as long as you have a good well I won’t come apart
I am still forging by hand! I watch this and drool over your tools! I am working to get there, I took your advice about shifting tous around and now I have several nice shop tools! Thanks Jason!
Any good smiths in los Los Angeles area to learn from
OK, I have some questions about this. What type of welder do you use for this? How much should I expect to pay for one? Is there a 'no welder' method of making a billet for pattern welding?
Nathan Cawley you won’t do it anyway
Great opening to the series! Camera angles are perfect and lightning is great, I like a dim shop for forging.
this was absolutely fascinating. Thank you
I discovered you when you were a judge on "Forged in Fire". I didn't much care for you on the show. I thought you were an arrogant jerk. Then curiosity got the better of me and I watched a couple of your videos here on RUclips. Boy what a huge difference between here and the show. They do some serious editing to make people seem like they're nothing at all like their true selves. I'm glad that the portrayal of you on the show isn't very accurate. You seem like a very down to earth guy here on your RUclips channel and I've definitely changed my opinion of you.
I felt the same way. Glad to hear I wasn't the only one. Now I feel like he has the best educational videos out there.
Cool video i like the live feeds better than voice over tho.
so the main thing is keep it clean and get it hot enough!!
Does each of the pieces have to be the same thickness?
Hey Jason, I know you don't believe in flux but if working with a coal forge would it be an advantage? Thx for the educational content!
Manu Vander Avort Yes it’s probably an advantage in working with a coal Forge however in charcoal I found that it is not necessary
Nice video , thanks Jason !
Loved watching it !!
