This “transparency project” is outstanding and I hope they keep going in this direction. This is more like a podcast and the trend gives more depth and detail than the customary ‘sound bites’ do.
The description is wrong, McConnell is from Kentucky, not Arizona
I REALLY wish this kept going. I feel like Mr. Daschle was more cavalier with how things were handled re: Bork at the start, but after reflecting on what the Republicans did with Kavanaugh he seemed more chagrined. I really wish we could've heard more depth about that.
And this interview was longer than the ones with Collins and Graham. They missed questions that should have been asked such as his perspective on Cavanaugh's response to the aligations.

History shows that when legislative bodies become hyper political and winner take all forums, some form of authoritarianism is the end result. Could America become an authoritarian state in the not too far distant future?
Bork should've said something like, "if Ted Kennedy can serve in the Senate after killing a woman I can sure as hell serve on the Supreme Court as a racist". Wouldn't have gotten him nominated but would've been awesome television.
@@samueltexeira2734 Lol. Bork wasn't a "racist ideologue" just because you disagreed with him. Kennedy killing May Jo was way beyond "negligence" as was the attempted cover-up -- far worse that anything Bork did. Garland was fitting payback.

So they ask him about his reaction to Dr. Ford's testimony but fail to ask for his perspective on the rebuttal. Why? Did they have certain preconditions for the interview? Once again demonstrating bias, probably behind the scenes.
because they covered the fact that she was vetted and was found to be truthful. that simple.

@@kevinwoolley7960 sorry but... i was watching every second of the hearing in real time, and it was despicable. not only was dr. ford truthfully, her testimony brought several additional testimonies similar to this one. simply good journalism. bret, though, takes him with his toe.
RBG wasn't the only overwhelming confirmation after Bork - Anthony Kennedy was confirmed to the seat for which Bork was nominated, without a single "no" vote, I believe.
So it can't be said that Republican nominees were always getting a hard time.

Kennedy was a squish? By that, I guess you mean, that his views evolved over time. Well, it would be a pretty dreadful confession of ignorance for someone to confess that their views now were exactly the same as 30 years ago, it would mean that person had wasted the last 30 years. Maybe you mean Kennedy was influenced by the arguments he heard, or by the views of his fellow jurists - heaven forbid that a judge might be open minded!
Truth is, he was appointed by the same people who appointed Scalia, promoted Rehnquist to Chief Justice, and nominated Bork. But yeah, you're right and the Reagan team that looked for possible appointments was wrong ...🤦♂️

If there was any other Republican nominated by Reagan to the Supreme Court instead of Bork, would Ted Kennedy have been as aggressive in opposition? Was Kennedys opposition more on a personal or a professional basis?
Kennedy and Richardson were political rivals and friends from the same state. (Richardson was a former Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts. I'm thinking Richardson was part of the Rockefeller Republican wing of the GOP.) Cox was an old friend of the Kennedy family and served as Solicitor General. And, of course, Nixon and the Kennedys were "political adversaries".

Ginsburg will retire very close to the election. Too close to fill the vacancy. Ginsburg retirement in the eyes of the DNC will motivate all democrats and independents to vote. The problem for the DNC, Ginsburg does not retire in a vacuum. It will motivate the right as well. Still, Trump in a walk 2020

@@43timespersec McConnell reduced the threshold from 60 to 51 for SCOTUS in response to Reid's stupidity. McConnell promised Reid he would regret his decision to reduce the threshold for appeals court judges and he was right. We have a 6-3 supermajority to make it clear.
