Seemed to take you a while to figure the title out. Tull has so many great songs over their catalog that people never hear. I am glad you are reviewing these deep cuts.
Merry Christmas! Happy New Year!!! I've been enjoying your journey with Jethro Tull! I'm 74 and an avid fan since 1969! Two albums I'd love for you to react to! Roots to Branches, and their Christmas album!!! Peace my friend!
Yes, "4.W.D. (Low Ratio)" is pretty catchy but wasn't the album's single (that was "Working John, Working Joe" with "Fylingdale Flyer" on the B-side in the UK and the reverse elsewhere). I really like Dave Pegg's fretless bass part on it.
Dave Pegg's bass makes this track for me. That and the off-kilter time signature(s). An advert? Maybe, but a very tongue-in-cheek one, though Ian has almost certainly used four-wheel-drive vehicles while getting to his fish farm in the wilds of Scotland. Catchy as hell, too - an earworm for the ages.
4WD - 4 wheel drive. AWD - All Wheel Drive. 4WD typically can be disengaged to power just the back or front wheels alone. Typically found in trucks and some larger SUVs. Some Subaru's too. AWD is normally full-time and cannot be disengaged. Typically found on cars and smaller SUVs.
Ian Anderson never cared much about people's expectations. He had to carry on and made something completely unexpected at that time - especially because it was meant to be a solo album first. Catchy music with no deeper lyrics, but still refreshing to hear even today.
Cool song I’m glad you reviewed it but protect and survive from this album as a much more interesting song. They played incredibly well on the slipstream live DVD and CD from the tour for this album.
This is another one I jammed with Mark Craney because I loved the half time shuffle. He proudly declared that he recorded it prior to Babylon Sisters and Rosanna.
This track came together already during the Heavy Horses recordings. On the Bursting Out set they released a run through they played in Ludwigshafen during the soundcheck. Love it like I love the whole album.
Ian Anderson was running a major fish farming operation in the Scottish islands when he wasn't being the frontman for Tull. And he has a farm in England. Although, famously, he doesn't have driving licence, maybe he did drive off-road.
I’m pretty sure he must have driven off-road. I know that he was very much into his motorbikes and I saw a documentary with footage of him riding cross-country on his estate, so I see no reason why he couldn’t do so in a four-wheeled vehicle (or even a four-wheeled drive vehicle?)
I remember buying this album and sitting there listening to songs about batteries and four wheel drive thinking “ this from the guy that gave us Thick as a Brick, Aqualung, other thoughtful masterpieces. I realize not every song can be profound. That’s a hard accomplishment that I feel Rush got trapped in. That every song should be deep and must have a moral to the story. So I’m sympathetic. But really….even being sympathetic I could not believe alot of what was dished out on this album.
That may be true, if my memory serves me right I think I saw a picture of Ian Anderson with a Land Rover decades ago..but It must be a Land Rover Series III, because this piece dates from 1980, so there was no Land Rover Defender yet!😉
Yeah, not bad. Probably my fave off the album, largely due it being more 'Tully' than the prev tracks. This was supposed to be a change of direction, solo IA album remember :)
Glad you liked this one. The 'A' album isn't their best and at the same time is under rated. You've got a couple decent tracks yet to go. I suspect you will like them.
Four Wheel Drive, low gear ratio. How you get unstuck, or pull through the mud. You know, if you go off road. I think a Cybertruck might qualify. but from what I've heard it might still get stuck in the mud.

Took me a bit ;)

Swagger is the word. It's also got an edge of sarcasm to it about folks who are easily sold the new big thing.
An album highlight, for sure. Swagger indeed!
Love this track. I will be singing it all day. :)

This track isn't about much, but it rocks! Understated with splashes of flash and a hefty dose of that swagger. I love this album...
This is my favorite post classic lineup album by Tull. Didn't much care for anything after that
Agreed. “Broadsword” has a few good tracks. After that I lose interest.
From start to finish 'BATB' is a fine album. It was after that things went awry!

Sheer fabrication! 🎅
Love it😊.

Now you caught an earworm!
Great prog song 🎶
Methinks the last verse perhaps gets a little naughty? Just a thought.
Of course! 😅
Sounds more like a Land Rover Defender than a Jeep.

@@a.k.1740 I'm not well-versed on various models so I probably said the wrong model. I meant the old one, I guess that's the Series III.
❤❤❤❤

4 wheel drive, possibly.
Much better than Chinatown.
