Homer Badman is a Simpsons episode that teaches us about the toxicity of cancel culture.

A movie I highly recommend: The Gospel According to Matthew (starring a very animated and engaging acting performance by Bruce Marchiano, who plays Jesus). This is a word-for-word adaptation that has a unique take on the body language and charisma of Jesus, and also makes it easier to understand and quicker to read the story. I think a lot of people have a hard time criticizing cancel culture because so many bad people use it as a blanket term to avoid any responsibility for their actions. To me, cancel culture is as you described- people being thrown under the bus for old or minor mistakes. But many politicians use the term “cancel culture” to defend some honestly horrible people.
It is honestly quite sad how many bad faith actors co-opt genuine criticisms or problems for their own agenda. Great video regardless Express.

Yeah. Every time I hear about cancel culture being a recent thing I just get reminded about that one guy who ruined many politician's lives by calling them communists without any evidence (U.S.A in the 50's I believe.) History repeats itself.
The fact that the characters in the episode never gave Homer a proper apology might be accurate to people who find out they were in the wrong but don't want to fully admit it
Truth. Most people are unable to humble themselves when proven wrong, which I think says a lot about their character.
That it self shows one of, or out right the biggest problems with us humans, our ego. It keeps us from admitting our faults. It keeps us from reconsidered our ways. It keep us from improving ourselves. It keeps us from accepting factsI. It keep us from accepting our betters. It make us stubborn and It keep us stagnant.

People cancel people for minor/old mistakes for 3 things
1. Malicious reasons
2. They are so sensitive to everything
3. They want to feel like they’re helping a problem
3 is partly whiteknighting, partly something which C.S.Lewis described as people worrying about all humanity without actively helping those whom they can.
3 is the big one. Everyone wants to feel like the virtuous Saint of woketry.
4. They have a dark past and are over-correcting.
Another is some want popularity/fame, and sadly the media, news, and internet does glamorize victimhood, and such. This is also why some real victims are afraid to come out, because they're afraid they'll look like popularity/fortune/attention seekers.
So it hurts legit victims too.
Because they're not used to struggle or to be told NO. They should learn to get over it.

A game developer whose work I loved and respected committed suicide because his ex girlfriend, a proven liar and manipulator, basically "cancelled" him the moment he made a successful game. The Simpsons might just be a cartoon, but this is why it's not even half as bad as real life.

The worst part was the guy's family and the whole developer team sided with the accuser. When the guy offed himself, his family(i believe his sister) and friends still sides with the bitch.

And the hard part about this, especially with sexual harassment things is, both sides get hurt. Women can make up stories that ruin innocent mens lives, but at the same time, speaking up about any sexual assault is *terrifying* for victims because of the fear that, since they have no technical evidence, nobody would believe them.
There's no winning, someone always gets hurt.

Also, as much as we might not want to accept it, by the legal definition, Homer did commit Sexual Harassment. Homer could've simply told the babysitter about the situation and gotten the candy back from her; by touching her pants, even with good intentions, Homer sexually harassed the babysitter. While the Crusade against him went way too far, if the Babysitter actually took Homer to court, even with that video, Homer would be in Jail and on a Sexual Offenders list.
To add to this, a big problem is that even if someone was accused of sexual harassment (or any other crime) and was found not guilty in a court of law, there will still be people who still believe that they are guilty. So their career goes down the drain and is forever lost in there. As any project they would work on will be tainted by that stain. For example OJ Simpson. He was found not guilty yet people still harass him over it (now i'm not saying he did or didn't do it, just stating a fact). Hell, even stating that fact once made some people on twitter get triggered at me, calling me the devil himself for simply stating a fact in an objective manner. Another example is James Gunn. Some old, dark humour tweets were dug up by far-right wing nutjobs in retaliation to Rosanne Barr getting sacked off her revived TV show (due to her racist tweets) and as a result, Gunn got sacked from Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 even though he apologised for those tweets years ago and has never made one of that nature again. In contrast to Rosanne who did apologise, but minutes later started it back up again (he is back on the project, thank god for that).
Here in Australia, Geoffrey Rush got accused of sexual harassment and the Daily Telegraph ran numerous stories about it, basically ruining his career. The charges were later dropped but that didn't stop the Telegraph from continuing the story. So Rush sued the newspaper and their parent company, news corp for defamation and won. It is seriously scary how one person can ruin someones life over a misunderstanding or just wants to get petty revenge over nothing so they make up stories like sexual harassment. The bigger problem is that these kind of false stories only damage the legitimate ones, as some people will start to doubt any sexual assault / harassment accusation and whether or not the accuser is an actual victim for someone who wants 5 minutes of fame by publicly destroying someones career.

It reminds me of a question that was asked many years ago by a man that was cleared of charges that were made against him that were false. "Where do I go to get my reputation back?"
I remember when this kind of thing happened to Etika. The worst part is, he wasn’t even accused of doing anything wrong, he was just... harassed. He ended up taking his life too.
When you're someone as out there & jokey as Desmond, people will assume everything you do is either A) A publicity stunt or B) A meme.
The unfortunate part is that Desmond was likely within some form of manic state every stream & we egged him on having no idea he was only tap dancing because the floor was tazing him until he got shocked.
A lot of the folks spamming clown emojis bore no ill will, they just thought they were playing along with another one of his wacky stunts, it's sad, you can point the finger all you want but it's really no one's fault, it's just a really unfortunate series of events.
There was one moment where he seemingly snapped out of his trance for a bit on stream, he took a peek at the chat & suddenly looked really forlorn & simply said "Loving the clown emojis, guys..." while throwing his hand up, that couple of seconds really stuck with me. What a tragedy.
And don't forget the replica who involved etika's merchandising with people literally edending a mafia style. Seriously, Smash community is worse than LoL at times in great part because, unlike LoL, these guys embrace cancel culture, and not even Nairo was safe.

If “normal people” like us had millions of eyes watching us every single day we would probably all be cancelled tbh. I feel like people deserve a second chance and should not be automatically shut down unless they keep repeating the same terrible action.

That’s the thing I miss about The Simpsons. It wasn’t just a comedy sitcom, it had an actual story with an actual message, a message someone can learn from. Present day Simpsons will never be as good as the early seasons

Hearing about cancel culture when I was young had a bad impact on me. I always been a perfectionist, but cancel culture just made my perfectionism worse. Thinking about how people get canceled for the stupidest of things makes me fear of what people might do to me. It made me more socially anxious, cynical, and more defensive and insecure. I've always been like this, but I can't say that our social climate has no effect on it.
But in a weird way, hearing about how Chris Pratt got cancelled because he did nothing made me feel better. Because, no matter what you do there's always someone to pull you down. I know that sounds awful which it is, but it's reassuring to me at least that don't have to perfect because it doesn't matter. Also, hearing how Robert Downey Jr. was there by his side helping his friend is reassuring as well. It tells me that in bad times you'll know who your true friends are. Who'll be there thick and thin, and help support you no matter what. It helps remind me of those who'll support me even if do mess up. I guess I'm writing this so it will help me, and others who are scared of cancel culture.

Agreed, from how I see it Cancel culture had a good goal, however there are flaws in it that hinder moreso than help. By that I mean it was just about people calling out people for crud they did, this can be beneficial by having the person spend time to reflect on their past. One of the major flaws is that there are people out for the drama of it while others keep going out of their way to cancel people who already spent a year to reflect on their past. This is not to say it is entirely bad, but more often than not it just hurts creators that did mean or messed up things only a few times, creators that have changed and become better people.

Damn. It's easy to forget just how incredible (and biting) the writing on this show was. Makes me want to go back and watch the first eight seasons over again.
That line summarized MeToo perfectly, where the accusation is all the evidence the internet needs that someone is guilty long before the truth is known. Then even when the person's name is cleared they're treated like they could still be guilty or just "got away"

The whole ProJared situation really just taught me to take a backseat and wait for the story to unfold. What was maddening was, even after showing all the evidence to back himself up, there were people still looking for new ways to be mad at him.

I think another problem with cancel culture is the lack of accountability and consequences for the people that knowingly lie about the people they're cancelling. Remember when ProJared got cancelled and his accusor claimed Jared knew he was a minor and sexted them anyway? Jared cleared his name and proved the accusor lied. What happened to his accusor?

Another issue with cancel culture is the time frame. Even if the person gets cancelled once for something they did, they could still get cancelled despite apologizing or openly talking about what they did. It is essentially a giant loop and people sometimes only care more about the drama rather than the actually idea of calling the person out so that they improve and what they perceive as justice by annoying these people.

@@bill8383 I believe you may have misread my last point, but basically my point is that almost all of the time cancel culture I essentially useless because a person could keep getting called out despite apologizing or if they just don't care The person that is being cancelled could actually improve from it, but most of the time other people are in it for the drama rather than actually making any actual criticisms that are valid. 7:07 I think to answer your question as best as I can, it depends on the situation... if someone made a mistake but admits they’re mistake and they’re flaws, and even possibly tries to change for the better of themselves and people. Then they don’t deserve to have they’re entire lives ruined.
But, if they don’t learn from they’re mistakes and are too scared to admit that they’re not perfect, and keeps making the same mistakes or even worse mistakes. Then I would say that having they’re lives ruined is a form of karma.

This is far from exaggerated. It immediately reminds me of the situation with Slazo, where a girl accused him of abuse, and everyone turned on him in the blink of an eye. Even his friends threw him under the bus with no hesitation. Then he made a response where he proved the girl's statements wrong and suddenly everyone just went quiet about it, not many people apologized either.
It also sucks because if you say "we should wait to hear the other side of the story" people are quick to jump on you and call you an "abuse sympathizer" and that you're in favor of those awful things. Theres no room to give anyone the chance to explain their side first because you should immediately side with the victim, even if they're not telling the truth. It hurts everyone in the long run. I think the Simpsons did an amazing job of portraying what it's like to be canceled when you've done nothing wrong. In the same vein, it's chilling that an episode from such a long time ago could perfectly explain what society is like today.
The ironic part is that if people actually waited for an apology, then the victim’s testimony would be far more credible if it was true. Waiting for a response helps whichever part is innocent in the end.

There's also one episode of Icarly where Sam takes revenge againts Freddie by saying that he never had his first kiss during livestream. Everyone in school and internet made fun of him to the point that he stopped talking to his own mother and went to stay all day on the emergency stairs of the building, not even going out to work on Icarly. During the end of the episode Carly eventually confronts Sam and yells at her "Even if you apologise to him you can't undo what you say, people will keep making fun of him, you ruined his life and you aren't even sorry."

The problem with different values and opinions is that to some people, these values are part of their identity, if you are against gay and/or trans people, or like those "western chauvinists" your opinion directly attacks those people, having different values is ok in some situations, this situations are not when we talk about human rights and family rights, those differences are not acceptable when you are arguing that some people should live in a body that makes them feel horrible about themselves when they are asking and are able to receive the treatment they need to feel better, those differences are not acceptable when you are arguing that some people are "indesirable" because of what they are.
Cancel culture is dangerous in its own right because people change their ideas over time, that does not mean though that they shouldn't be held responsible for what they say or do. False accusations are a problem but so is the fact that real accusations get thrown out because they don't fit the widely accepted facts until they do, just see what happened with weinstein and other Hollywood personalities that nuked the careers of sexual assault victims, when this is happening and the public gets angry, the public starts attacking everyone that is accused of the same thing, even if it's not yet been proved or disproved
@@giordanocoresi2934 it's something interesting about humans, when we see something portrayed a certain way so much, we begin to lump together every case of that occurrence and automatically place it with the proven cases. A decent analogy would be a cat who sits on a hot stove on accident. Once that happens, the cat will obviously feel pain and get off, now lumping every second of the stove's existence with that incident because, even if the stove is off and shows no signs of being on, the cat won't sit on it again for that one bad experience they had without any signs of that same situation being at play.

You've really brought this to light. For a long time, I've despised "cancel culture" and have never and do not plan to hop on that bandwagon any time soon. There are even people who have ended their lives due to this kind of hate we see on a daily basis every where we go. I aswell hope this someday will change, and society gets better. But until then, it's crashing and burning.
Its funny how the Simpson make an episode about how false accusation can ruin someones life yet decide remove the Michael Jackson episode after that stupid documentary came out. You know a guy who aquitted and was still ridiculed despite their being evidence that proves/ suggest that he was innocent. This is especially sad considering that he is not here to defend himself. If you want to watch a good documentary that give actual facts I recommend Danny Wu's Square One which talks the 1993 allegations, Its on RUclips and Amazon Prime.

The problem is that people put their favorite celebs on a pedestal which is why they are disappointed when they are let down. Also often times people who have committed horrible crimes get away with it. I was a victim of sexual assault and the man who assaulted me got away with it and I was accused of lying and trying to tear a man down.

This is one of my favorite episodes. Watched it on Disney + recently, it is both relevant and pretty funny.
If anything wasn't the point also illustrating looks aswell. men who aren't model level attractive or rich and are accused of something by something considered beautiful by society. its easy for them to not be heard. it also points at how powerful and dangerous the media are in painting a negative or extreme picture of an innocent person based on one side of a story.
If anything none of the media organisations assumed any responsiblity or paid for their actions. that endangered homer's and his family's lives.
Apologizing is the last thing you should do when you go up against cancel culture. It's supporters take it as a victory, and when they are given an inch, they take a mile. Actual criminal should be punished, sure. The court of public opinion just isn't the place for it. Cancel culture needs to be egnored if it is ever going to go away. Don't reward the bad behavior and those doing it will stop.
Agreed, apologizing is more of a last resort. The best way in my opinion is to ignore them until they find someone else to cancel.

Exactly. That raised a huge eyebrow with me. Most people who cancel others are those who are 1. unhealthily engrossed in all the injustice there is in the world and 2. Know there is little to nothing that they as individuals can actually do about it, and that's why they will frenzy anyone who seems vulnerable enough to actually take down a peg. They know they can't cancel Trump, so they'll instead cancel Lindsay Ellis, or Noelle Stevenson, people who are sympathetic to their cause but will still get the axe because the mob doesn't care who it's lynching, just that it CAN lynch them. Apologizing when you didn't actually do anything wrong is a surefire way to tell the mob that they can get you. If you become rich and famous through legitimate means, and people try to cancel you, if you give it no attention whatsoever, even to defend yourself, you'll eventually get it through their heads wordlessly that "I don't NEED to defend myself to you. I'm one of the ones you can't touch." Let them feel powerless to stop you, and they'll find someone else in the name of running from that all too familiar feeling, meanwhile you can keep enjoying your life, content in the knowledge that you didn't actually do anything wrong. Their powerlessness in the grand scheme of things makes them unaware that they are in fact bullies, and there's nothing a bully loves more than a reaction.

The toxicity of the internet mainly comes from mob culture. Cancel culture is a perfect example of this. The thing is, if some 12-year old, gullible kids find a meme that says somebody did so and so, they will hate on this person because of the nature of memes and how you get the feeling you have to participate in it to be a part of it. Now, I have reddit and every now and then, I see the most random trends popping up like for example disliking one particular Morgz video for absolutely no reason or googling "Why is my pee red" to "mess with the Google algorithm" or something like that. And people do that kind of thing. They participate although they probably don't even find it funny. They just feel the need to find it funny because "it's a meme, right? Memes are funny." They're like sheep, following the herd whereever they go. I think, this sort of mob mentality in the internet is the most toxic. It's similar to how only one opinion is accepted on Twitter and stuff like that. The internet is ruined by peer pressure
In a sense is like a box, full of people who are too close-minded to realize they might hurt someone in their actions, but the worst of all is that when they jump in to the cancelation of someone they believe they are doing it to save someone, to aid, to be a hero for that one who is acussing.
They'll believe they are right and any oposition leads them to dismiss oposition since they feel treathen.
How many times we have seen someone able to prove that they are innocent and yet have their future be taken?
How many times a person who is just starting to gain traction to be accuse of sexual harrasment?
How many times we have seen someone lose a job just for having different political views?
Memes in a sense just represent that portion of life of jumping into the hate train like a mob, a medival mob that refuses to see the bigger picture, that wants to be RIGHT no matter the consecuences.
If we want to defeat Cancel culture we have to learn how it works, because no matter how evil is one. They always deserve redemption, an opportunity to change and pick up their lives once again.
The last part about twitter is what always makes me take breaks. I'm really only on there for some friends, but it can be a real grind because of that. I havent seen anywhere start fights like they have on there.
Friends turning against eachother over a joke(?) accusation, people defending someone solely because theyre trans(that one school shooter) or a black woman(gorilla glue hair lady), and everything has to be twisted to suit that sides attack and defense.
In those two examples, the trans shooter had a whole trending tag because people were focusing on saying they must have just been a kid bullied for being trans, when there was no evidence of bullying at all, and put the entire focus on that instead of the only person who died being another student who got the gun away from them. They didnt get any recognition for that brave, selfless act, because twitter wanted to talk about trans bullying. Even the shooter themself asked people to stop encouraging them and admitted they deserved jail and were in the wrong and not to turn it into a trans problem.
The recent gorilla glue one, I mostly ignored that until earlier today when I found out she and her apparent defenders were making it about how shes not getting empathy and is made fun of because shes a black woman, not that she left gorilla glue in her hair for a month and then demanded they pay for her hospital bill because "it doesnt say 'do not put in hair' on the bottle". What part of that exactly is about her race or gender? "If it was a white woman she would have more empathy" I sincerely doubt that. And now twitter is of course making it a "you either defend her or be racist" ordeal. Until apparently she said something about gay people idk what it was but NOW shes losing support over it, so it almost always goes both ways like that.
Neither of those cases had anything to do with their race or genders, but thats how you support your beliefs on there, you have to have a very clear moral highground by calling any challengers racist, sexist, etc and making it easier to cancel not only the original people but now anyone you know who doesnt side with you.

Yes these people have a victim mindset and are searching for victimisation, seeing it even when it simply is not there. Then cloaking their outrage in virtue signalling to gain followers they will demand vigilante justice immediately against the accused to complicate the issue rather than seek the truth.
Thing about cancel culture is that it is the literal representation of the saying "Road to hell is paved with good intentions".
Me2 and acceptence movements are my favourite cases:
At one point, someone somewhere had an actually good and noble idea and started out with a small crowd, but as it grew more and more extreme people who just hated someone or were petty all around slowly twisted the movements.
I don't think I can ever say I met a person who supported those two movements before that still supports them.
When people say power to the masses, it sometimes feels ignorant just due to the fact how many people will crawl out of the woodwork just so they can hzurt someone who "wronged" them.

I think cancel culture reflects a lot about our society. We use a lot of social media, anyone can know who we are.
For a time, i've noticed a trend in people often adapting or mildly changing their tones or attitudes, because they seek validation from other people, or seek some kind of belonging with people.
There is a phase of narcissism, Bitterness and self loathing in people, that the best way to accompany their needs, is to tear down the status of someone, and defame them for even mild reasons, because as long as enough delusional people are enraged and vocal, the chameleons will shade up in support to avoid the backlash from radicals, and perhaps join in the witch hunts to absolve themselves of any guilt or responsibility over past transgressions.
These kinds of people try to deflect any suspicion of their past transgressions by targeting the latest trend, and and as a result, they virtue signal for petty things like "im anti bad things, I'm so pro good things", which becomes a competition to conclude who is the most righteous, through fake activism and participation.
And of course, the real victims are people who've likely moved on from their bad habits, and just want to do good things, or enjoy something harmless.
Cancel culture, does reflect how people are becoming so primitive, reliant, tribalistic, and frantic. Our age of humanity is looking rather grim.
You think people are only becoming like this now? They've been at it for hundreds, if not thousands, in fact probably tens of thousands of years. The most obvious example that I can think of is the real life witch hunts that used to happen.

I'll just clarify, I'm not saying humanity has never been this way before. Of course, mob mentality and such have always been a thing. However, I was simply saying that the Internet and social media have amplified people's capacity for violence, as well as the willingness to dehumanise other people, because everything is digital, and broadcasted on a screen.

What people don’t know is that when anyone can get cancelled for a minor screw up, they can get cancelled too. And when everyone can and will get cancelled, what’s left? Them? They can’t entertain or be funny like the people they hurt and the lives they ruin. Nobody will be good and funny on the internet when those good people are exposed for mistakes they apologized for. And eventually, karma will come to ruin them too. They get no sympathy since they ruined everything. There will be nothing left to criticize when you criticize everything. You can’t speak up and out about things that you have no business talking about. Capitalizing off of a lie isn’t good in real life. With real stories. This isn’t a cartoon, it’s not an anime, it’s not a fantasy. Pointing fingers will get fingers pointed back at you even if you’re just someone with time on their hands. Do something more productive than cancel people making others happy. Unless it’s a real issue that hasn’t been addressed or apologized for, don’t make a big deal from it. Don’t make yourself the everyday man’s callmecarson because you call out people like him. People make mistakes and say they’re sorry, but if you can’t say sorry for twisting words and lying for a couple of likes, then you’re just as bad as the people you ruin. You can be worse, as time goes on, but we don’t complain, do we?
