Finally, Zakaria seems to recognize that the regional powers resisting the the dying Western order are getting harder and harder to push around. And he also seems to recognize that these geopolitical orders have to be fought for in order to be maintained. But you need your own people to be willing to engage in that struggle, and the US has been egregiously profligate with its own human resources in this regard. It is precisely Zakaria's class of people who have been in charge during the dismantling of US productive capacity (in energy and materials rather than economic rents) and the abandonment of "fly over country." The arrogance of "the citizens of nowhere" towards the bulk of the US working class is palpable. Now those people are supposed to believe YOU, Fareed, that they ought to sacrifice for YOUR order? No wonder there is division and dysfunction in America!

I like what Fareed is saying and I think it would make sense to put an international DMZ of about 500 Meters all the way around Gaza as a mutual protection and have it staffed with you and troops. Saudi Arabia and the United States could pay for this. And it would be very wise then to turn around and invest heavily in Gaza and its people to rebuild Gaza into a highly educated and highly International Zone like Singapore or Dubai.

It ran as a 5000 year old culture and they’re bound together by a stagnant religious belief but at least they believe in something. We need something to believe in right now something to bring us together. I think America has an opportunity and a responsibility to lead the world out of this mess, and that, by focusing on environmental resilience, rebuilding a degraded planet from an environmental standpoint, and learning how to be of service to all non-human life we have a best chance of creating a common threadthroughout our people, and finding a way to come together to work together to live together and create a better world

Galloway argues that Israel's caualties on Oct 7 justify their response. Many more Palestinians have been killed by the IDF over the last few decades. So why not take into account their right to respond to atrocities committed against them? When you don't look at both sides as humans deserving of respect and equality, you get Oct 7. If the US and Israel had truly wanted to create more peaceful coexistence in this region, it could have been done well in advance of Oct 7.

The whole interview is a very 'western-centric' perspective on how great the achievements are of respective colonial powers; it looks at the 'winners', particularly the US and conflate victory with being right. The Middle East is testament to how horrifically perverse American foreign policy is and how it only benefits a small group of individuals to the detriment of the many. Hundreds of thousands of people if not millions have been killed by US policies over the past couple of decades across Syria, Yemen, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and other neighboring countries.

Since October 7th 400 civilians killed by Israeli military and settlers who are armed by government. Where Fareed is wrong is Israeli supremacy in ME is thanks to Western support. Technology is not enough for such a supremacy. Israel does not have enough population to keep a large military for occupation and defense, provide employees for startups, produce it's own goods including arms at the same time. The whole point is that the kill switch won't work because the AI will manage to sow disagreement among the population over whether the kill switch should be activated or not, and will keep it that way until it has figured out a way to take full control. If you see how easily humans fall prey to division and disagreement that should be a walk in the park for a hyper intelligent, super sophisticated AI system. There may be a handful of smart people who know what's going on and try to warn everyone but they will be cast aside as crackpots and nutcases that can safely be ignored. And if not, the AI will do its magic to ruin their credibility. Bottom line is it's foolish to think something less intelligent (the collective of the human race) can control something much more intelligent (future AI).

In the segment "What are the policies that can save us from ourselves?", which begins at 39:01, how does Zakaria possibly hold up Tony Blair and Bill Clinton up as exemplars in his response? The very seeds of discontent to which Zakaria attributes today's disaffection of working class Americans can be traced directly to NAFTA, which was a Clinton initiative and implementation. Moreover by glossing over this fact and harping so much on "woke" (a term that Zakaria, like everyone else who uses it, fails to define beyond meaning anything he personally does not like) he obfuscates where the focus needs to be to address the substantive issue Prof G's question raises.
Zakaria asserts that "it is all cultural and not at all economic"; well, clearly for him it is. Amazing how someone can have had such a front row seat for the world's events and still get it so wrong. He might have tried listening harder when his hero Clinton coined the aphorism "it's the economy, stupid!" It seems Clinton had pundits posing as historians like Zakaria specifically in mind.
Any wise political leader--or pundit--knows, the fact is that you have to pay attention to BOTH.

You know as well as I that Japan and Germany had ample armies to fight a war That was NEVER going to be the situation with Hamas! As far as 9/11, we were no different when we attack Iraq than the terrorist that attack us! We owed it to the world to show restrain on invading Iraq and while we had a right to attack Afghanistan. When the Taliban beg us for a peace deal, we should have created it with favorable terms to us. Israel too could have showed restrain while looking to use a much more tactical approach. This was always going to end up being a side with machine guns fighting a side with sling shots!. That is why level headed people have become less tolerant of the situation!

Yep, that was rather disappointing from Prof G., who we otherwise know to be a rational person.
This is a very asymmetrical conflict, within a nation. The actions and goals of Hamas might be barbaric, but the plight of the Palestinians is also horrendous, and their grievances are justified. Nothing like the imperialism from Hitler Germany or Japan. Can't solve this with "unconditional surrender," only makes it worse. If you're the underlying party and are being subjugated even more, that creates enormous resentment, not introspection.

Now they are more than likely just creating the next Generation of Terrorist. The proof of that fact may be seen in the lives of many. Just look at how many people now aged who you know that still carry the insecurities from events of their youth. It is things that happen in our youth that most of the time leave a lasting impression. Because of 9/11 we invade Iraq, who had nothing to do with 9/11 nor did they have weapons of mass destruction. Now a good portion of Iraq sides with Iran. As Voltaire said a catchy phase means nothing! Fight them over there so we don't have to fight them over here. That phrase cost a generation over a trillion dollar, which we got nothing for! Under Marcus Aurelius Rome conquered and then welcome those people into the Society. His view was if the people's life's he conquered improved their contentment was a pathway to peace. Be well.

This was never going to be a fair fight, and comparing it to Pearl Harbor and WWII is pure BS as those countries had ample armies to fight a war! Israel could have gone to the UN to try and create a coalition of forces , in a attempt use a plan where at least they where trying to show some compassion for the civilian society.
