PSA: Swimimg in the toilet bowl is extremely dangerous! Swam into it today and the water currents in the bowl are pretty strong and push you away from the exit under the waterfall. This can tire you out and leave you with little energy left for the escape swim

It is spring fed and the same temperature year around. You can drink the water at the source. Unfortunately everything in this video burned in the 40,000 acre Backbone Fire in the summer of 2021. It’s still closed and likely very different now.

Fossil creek no longer looks like this due to all the floods in 2020. We definitely would not recommend anyone go there now. Great video of what was once, however.

you can get to Fossil Creek through Camp Verde area off the 17 fwy, exit 287. Need a good vehicle with clearance for the 14 mile drive down, get a $10 permit beforehand online, then enjoy the water. Planning on going back to hike back to the Toilet bowl next.

Agreed, and this is just one of many swimming holes and water falls at Fossil Creek. There’s even hot springs where Fossil Creek meets the Verde River. Unfortunately, it will be closed for a while due to the Backbone Fire in the summer of 2021.

Fossil Creek requires permits from April 1-October 1. The Toilet Bowl and these upper falls require a 4 mile hike in (down) on Bob Bear Trailhead. Remember this also requires a 4 mile hike out and up. There is a spring up creek from the waterfall you can refill your water but it can be difficult to find for the first time. The Bob Bear Trailhead is access via Strawberry whereas the rest of Fossil Creek is accessed outside of Camp Verde. Below is the link for permits.
