2 lines in to Goodbye Evergreen, I was crying
I love it when people just feel an album in its entirety. Sufjan has been the most present artist in my life this year. Even though I've been listening to Illinois songs for years, I never took the time to explore his discography beyond that. By accident, in January of this year, I stumbled upon Carrie & Lowell. At that time, it just so happened that I lost my cousin to cancer. It had been a very tough battle for her and I just felt a lot of regret for many things. Things I left unsaid, the way my social anxiety prevented me from talking to her and giving more support. I felt guilty for living when she passed, and C&L was just... there for me. That devaastating sadness, the regret, the self-destructiveness, everything I felt was there. It was healing in a way because I felt so seen an understood.
Then I heard Sufjan was about to release a new album. On the same month of its release, my dog, my best friend of 12 years and light of my life, passed away. And once again, I felt like Sufjan's voice was there to guide me through my grief. It was different from the type of grief that I felt at the beginning of the year, just like C&L and Javelin are very different, but both still amazingly touching. I don't feel sad for not knowing about C&L earlier. It reached me when I needed most. The ending song of Javelin, the Neil Young cover, somehow managed to give me hope. Hadn't felt that in years. I truly believe Sufjan is a special type of human. His voice, words and songs reach people in a marvelous way and I'm thankful for his existence.

Sufjan really is a special person and his music affects us all differently in many ways. this album got me bawling every single song. this has been such a painful year so full of lost but also so much love. death teaches you so much about love in a way you could never imagine. he was able to capture so perfectly and beautifully all that mess of feelings grief comes with. it's comforting and heartbreaking at the same time.

since you asked for feedback at the end of the video, I will give it. Sufjan is my no.1 artist so I'm basically watching every single reaction there is of this album on YT. This is the first I've seen of your content. And I loved every second of this video; and I love you dude. You're so likable, so funny, so sincere. I have instantly subscribed because any Sufjan fan is a friend of mine. I hate to be a spoilt little bastard but if you haven't already checked out Black Country, New Road, I would like to request that you do a reaction to Ants From Up There and then all of their other albums please. And maybe Sufjan's All Delighted People if you haven't already heard that one because sometimes people miss it as it's technically an EP (even though it's basically an album). Oh my god yes Vito’s Ordination Song (acoustic specifically) is one of my favorite Sufjan songs ever-I love how much this album feels like a sort of reincarnation of Greetjngs from MI and All Delighted People with a new story and context
"theres a world" is a cover but it changes every feature of the original song except for the lyrics. The melodies and harmonies are completely different. Javelin (the title track) may be short but I really appreciate how important it still seems. I dont know what the tracks meaning is but I know its important.
Oh really? I was shocked when I read ‘Neil Young’😂 & i totally agree it was a beautiful short track and fit perfectly into the album!
To me, Javelin (the track, but also the album) is about love, it being a javelin in itself. Love comes also with pain, some fights, some struggling, but it's still beautiful and worth experiencing. To love someone is to target them, to maybe hurt them, to change them. It's losing a bit of yourself to give it to someone else.
Complementing this feeling that the song itself gave me, Sufjan's essays for the album have titles that connect to form the phrase "My love is a weapon thrown onto the oblivion of your body".
I love this album so much but it's so sad! But hopeful?

I think it's a mistake to expect artists to suffer in order to then create their best pieces. When it works out well, we should appreciate it as in this case, but it's a cruel standard to set. Love the review, thanks!
