- Capturing the Handicrafts of Sri Lanka" is a heartfelt project that began in 2019, conceived by Inoka Dias and Mahesh Wanigasooriya. Together, they embarked on a journey across Sri Lanka to document some of the country's lesser-known artisanal treasures. Their travels took them to meet traditional craftsmen and women whose skills have been passed down through generations. As they explored, they became acutely aware that many of these crafts face the risk of fading away with time. To their delight, some of the crafts featured in their book, such as Dumbara design and Puppetry, have now been recognized on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Driven by a shared passion for travel, photography, and a desire to give back to their country, Inoka and Mahesh created this book not as an academic text but as a visual and emotional journey. They believe photography is the most powerful medium to convey the beauty and intricacy of these crafts, allowing the images to tell the story. The book showcases 18 unique crafts, each featuring the people, the process, and the final creation, ending with a reflective write-up on their personal discoveries along the way.
Their goal with this book is to share Sri Lanka's rich heritage of handcrafted art with the world. They hope it serves as an educational resource for anyone interested in the dedication and artistry that goes into these creations. Measuring 170mm x 200mm and spanning 335 pages, the book is thoughtfully designed to be accessible to readers of all ages and backgrounds. It’s a versatile piece, ideal as a travel companion, a thoughtful souvenir, or a cherished coffee table book.
Inoka and Mahesh envision this book as a timeless tribute to Sri Lanka's artistic legacy, a one-of-a-kind publication that will be passed down through generations-something that doesn’t currently exist in Sri Lanka’s literary landscape.
