College has been shoved down everyone’s throat since the late 70’s it seems. High schools used to teach drafting, wood working, metal shop, mechanics, etc… These classes would give young people a chance to see if they might like something, or be good at something, and could then peruse it upon graduation. But teachers, school counselors, etc began pushing college, college, college…and slowly these classes were done away with in school districts all across the country. This led to a downfall in skilled workers. For example we need plumber’s, carpenter’s, mechanics, and such who are highly skilled and can do many a job, more than we need unskilled people with college degree’s in nothing physical.
If you're in college... you need to have clear goals. The cost is growing; focus is important. The most important thing I learned in college... was that jobs taught me a lot, also. What job do you get with a social science, psych, commo degree? Uhhh... none. I saw a lot of students in college who drank, partied, and played their time away. I worked 3 jobs, when I was in college, in addition to full study.
My grandson has a home school diploma who went to HVAC trade school in Texas making $21 an hour, to start, while attending school hands on training. After 5 yrs he rec'ed his Journeyman's degree and now makes $86k annually at 40 hours a week. That doesn't include average 10 to 15 hours overtime weekly. With a Jdegree he can also get an LLC and have his own company. He did go to junior college HVAC to get certified. Which was a waste of time he should have enrolled in a trade school right off the bat after school. The highest paid trade in trade school is Electrical Engineering $120k with no college degree. Trade school repts should go to high schools and share the options that are out there. College is not the only option out there.
When I was in school which was over 30 years ago they pushed college so hard that if you didnt have a plan to go to college you were looked down upon.
