In my opinion, this film was much harder to follow than the first one, having watched both back to back for the first time last week. Thanks for this summary.
Thank you so much for this concise recap...there were so many names of characters being tossed around in the first hour or so of this film that I missed some key points--specifically that Pentangelli's assassination was not ordered by Michael and how Michael connected the dots and figured out it was Fredo who ultimately betrayed him.
Brilliant synopsis!! I was always confused with all the names and faces. You explained everyone’s parts very well. Thank you for all the time you put into your videos!!
As great as this film is, it's a bit hard to follow since so few chara ters are properly introduced. This video does a great job clearing everything up
I am confused 😕 so please explain 2 things: the reason Pentangeli commits suicide, and who killed the girl in Senator Gearys room and why? Please advise. Thanks 😊 in advance.
Oh I found the answer 2 one of the questions. It says it in this vid… “Tom pays a visit to the imprisoned Frank Pentengeli on a military base and suggests that he take his own life in the manner of unsuccessful ancient Roman conspirators who in return were promised that their families would be taken care of after their suicide”
I believe the girl was killed by the Corleone family to set up the senator to force him to cooperate with the family. He wouldn't want his extramarital affair to become public and lose the support of his constituents
@@johnlane5704 cool 😎. Is this a fact or is it your interpretation. It’s cool either way. I’m just wondering. Also, could they not have just threatened to out him for his affair & maybe film him in some precarious situations etc rather than going to the extremes of killing the girl? 😂
This is my take on it. He certainly off as an arrogant , but still worried about his image, kind of guy. As to why the extreme measures of killing her, she may have fell out of favor with the family. It's hard to say when dealing with people from the mob. This family did place a horses head in bed with that movie producer in the first movie after all
I watched part 2 first on some bad advice. It was very hard to follow and rather hollow without already having an interest in the characters. Having just watched part 1 and now this recap, it makes much makes sense! I wish I had seen them in the correct order.
@AlexRN Yes, it wasnt exactly advice, but on the Shat the movies podcast Gene suggested it might be great to watch it this way around. I can't remember his exact phrasing. I wish I hadn't taken that on board though. It totally spoiled the experience. I plan to wait a few years to try and cleanse my memory and watch it again from the start.
Thing about this movie is, it is a long movie, and the characters names are hard to memorise and they kind of start a scene from ending till beginning it’s like the method where they begin a scene by how it ended and then tell u how it happened which doesn’t really compliment the film length imo.. it was really hard to follow, thank you for the video
I wasn't fully clear on what exactly was going on in that sequence of events either - AFAIK Michael tells Roth that he believes the traitor is Pentangelli and he's going to have him killed, which I guess is a lie - and then he tells Penta that he knows Roth is the true traitor, and that his plan is to stay close to him so he needs Penta to settle with the brothers in New York that are supported by Roth, rather than continuing to fued with them - Penta goes to meet them and then they have him killed whilst saying it's Michael??? Which is really bizarre if they're planning to kill him either way. So maybe it's the case that Michael did know it was Roth all along, and was basically arranging to set Penta up and have Roth's men kill him, in order to destroy any sense that Michael was onto Roth and plotting against him - OR - Michael had no idea it was Roth at this point, and he only said that to Penta to lull him into a false sense of security and go ahead with the meet where he was to be killed. If neither of those theories stand true, then it means that Roth went behind michael's back to have Penta killed, doing so on his behalf, hence having his men send Michael's regards. Either way this part of the film (and perhaps a few others) are kinda sloppy and hard to follow. Edit: I Just had a google and someone suggested that the assassination attempt on Pentangelli is supposed to fail, and Roth set it up to seem like Michael had orchestrated it, in order to turn Penta against Michael - this would seem to make the most sense considering how the rest of the film plays out - what still doesn't make much sense though is the Cop who interferes on the assassination - hard to say whether that was part of the plan and he was on Roth's payroll, or if he just happened to interrupt naturally, and they were counting on someone randomly interrupting (would be a really dumb plan if so.)
Yes. They’re from when Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) was a child (the little boy who managed to run away when his mum got shot) and as he was growing up in New York (Robert De Nero).
Coppola wanted Richard Castellano to reprise his role for Part 2 but his outrageous demands saw the studio refuse. Coppola killed off Clemenza & replaced him with a new character Frank Pentangeli. It's a shame Castellano doesn't even appear in the final flashback scene.
Godfather 1 and 2 are good movies but they are far too long and convoluted. Unless you pay attention for the entire length of the mobue you'll miss everything because they're not good at explaining the plot
I watched them just because they are rated highly and I have to say, even though they are ok movies, alongside Apocalypse Now these are two most overrated movies ever

So was fredo the one who was responsible for the attempted murder on Michael in the beginning of the movie ?

Yup. I just finished watching the film and knew i needed a recap because I missed these details too.
Same, I love these movies but the influx of information at times makes it kinda hard to follow/remembers so i always gotta rewind and watch recaps
This was a summary i couldnt refuse
Thank you, I didn’t understand a lot of this film before which restricted my enjoyment of it and thanks to this video I do like the film now :)

I still don't fully understand this film....specifically when they try to kill Pantangeli in the bar

Where did you get the date of Vito's birthday? I thought he was born on Dec 7th, Pearl Harbor day.
Puzo is a great author. "The Sicilian" is one of my favorite books.
Are those flash backs to before part 1 happened ?
Yes. They’re from when Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) was a child (the little boy who managed to run away when his mum got shot) and as he was growing up in New York (Robert De Nero).
don Ciccio, not Siccio, awesome work anyway
Godfather part 2 is the best godfather film.

Had to watch this because the piracy site I watched this movie on didn’t have subtitles for the Robert De Niro scenes.
This plot stunk shit honestly. I cant believe this movie is so acclaimed

The names are so confusing and some of the characters look alike. 😅
The only thing I didn’t like about the Godfather 2 was too many flashbacks to the past and all about Vito Corleone.

But he already returned from the army in the first one how could he be going back? Why does it go back in time I don't get it
It was Michael's memory of when he first joined. Notice Sonny and Carlos are alive when both men died in the first movie
I almost forgot Fredo was still alive and congratulated Michael's decision to join the military when everyone else was extremely poed at him
