I agree with the comments below. This is a truly impressive account, sensitive to all the changes of mood, but never losing momentum or direction. It is also incredibly powerful and resonant. I once heard Berman play this live (along with all the other Transcendental Studies) - it was a truly memorable occasion.
You won't find a better interpretation. The grand challenge of Liszt is that behind the flamboyance and flare there usually lies a truly great composition.
More powerful louder than Lazar Berman=Mikhail Pletnev(Prokofiev piano concerto no 1 by Pletnev!) The Second Loudest ever was Lazar Berman! The 3rd Loudest was Erwin Nyiregyhazi!! More colorful beautiful piano sound than Lazar Berman=Wilhelm Kempff Emil Gilels Radu Lupu Artur Rubinstein Vladimir Ashkenazy Grigory Sokolov! More genius than Lazar Berman=Sviatoslav Richter Solomon Cutner Grigory Sokolov Maurizio Pollini Stanislav Bunin Maria Grinberg! Horowitz his technique better than Lazar Berman's technique!!
@@RaineriHakkarainen Well, I beg to differ... There's no more heartbreaking lyrical middle section of the 'Mazeppa' Etude - than that of L. Berman💔 As for the tinny sound of the piano - well, that's not Mr. Berman's fault, but the recording engineer and equipment used. And where's the great Cziffra (top interpreter of Liszt's piano works) among all the names you've mentioned? 🤔
This is from the once well known 1963 Melodyia set, stereo. He did an earlier set in 1959, mono, and a few years before that a selection of the T-etudes, which were especially extraordinary.
@@theonehappyorc1235 Before write this please play mephisto waltz S514 like Cziffra or shut up! It's simple to offend beeing not able to play the piano! So where is you version of the Mephisto Waltz?!?
I was lucky enough to find a JVC import of this very same album some 20+ years ago on CD! I haven't found this stereo version otherwise commercially available anywhere... Arrau and Bolet are fundamentally different. Both grew on me over time.
Fantastic piece - a masterpiece of composition and an incredible performer. Lazar Berman was born to Jewish parents. His mother was Anna LAZAREVNA Machover was also a piano player.
Was Liszt a Russian? I associate this performance with iikons made of gold, the bells ringing everywhere in Moscow, and the terrible Siberian storm. Very unique approach.

Wow the most powerful version of this piece I've ever heard

Yes I llike Lazar $so much. He lived in my hometown Florence and I consider him the best underated pianist ever. His Rach#3 is only chills!!!
INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This one is the best mazeppa interpretation.
LAZAR Berman has been one of the best Listzian interpeter ever!!!
:'' ) questa esecuzione dona delle emozioni veramente grandi!!
Grazie Berman" non morirai mai.Le tue esecuzioni vivranno in eterno!
Beman
NO Kidding... He OWNS all Twelve of these...!!!

Viene dopo Berman senza ombra di dubbio!
@@stefaniavirgili697Cziffra's is mediocre at most. How can you compare? This one is top 3.

I am moved to tears.Bravo!!!!!!!!!!!!
best mazeppa in my opinion

Love this interpretation. So beasty!
Grande Lazar!
Fabolous❤❤

@17pianoNW Its the transcendental version, not the grand.
SO THAT'S WHY HIS NAME IS ALL CAPS IN THE TITLE!!!
Was Liszt a Russian? I associate this performance with iikons made of gold, the bells ringing everywhere in Moscow, and the terrible Siberian storm. Very unique approach.
he was hungarian
I'm afraid to say ,I was hoping to appreciate Mr. Berman's characteristic performance. Of course I know Liszt was born in Hungary.:-)
aki Ishi Liszt was more a european than a russian .. because you asked if Liszt was a russian...
does anyone know to which recording belongs this ?
N.1

@aardvaark069 Bolet became overly cautious with age. His earlier Liszt recordings on Everest better represent what he was capable of.
don't forget how many people died to write it down
bu adamı kıskananlar çatlasın
Catharsis
In some circles he has an undeserved reputation for technique minus poetry.THis performance should dispel that.
too hardcore to my taste
@iguarni idk Cziffra's giving me a good run for my money there.
@FranzLisztian Berezovsky's is up there easily in my opinion, check him out :)
MI SPIACE MA DOPO AVER SENTITO QUESTO DEVO DIRE CHE E' SUPERIORE A BEREZOWSKY
Berezowsky fa ridere i polli come tutti i russi degli ultimi decenni.
Quello che fa ridere i polli sei tu e i poveretti come te
Too much pedal! Listen to Cziffra's version. - the best of them all!
With very little banging.
NO, MINE WAS BETTER
@CD122344 OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! THANK YOU!!! Cziffra is the best!
