- Like many games of that era, the story of King's Quest is not fully told in the game itself. Instead, you must read the manual to find the entire backstory, which I do in this video.

This lets play was made 10 years ago. Im now watching it for the third time. I love dilandau's style.
I really loved the voice of king Edward at the end of the video. nicely acted.
Thank you for this reading of the manual!
Thanks, Sven, for your impressive work and for inspiring me to make an intro for my own Let's Play of this game.
I'll also play King's Quest 1 in my native language, since I'm spaniard, and I was not able to find a direct translation of the manual with the magnificent drawings, so I had to make my own translation of the prologue and arrange it with some images from here and there.
I've sent my intro as a video response, in case you might want to take a look at it.
Interesting to finally know the backstory :) Thanks for reading and uploading it :)
I am picturing the Wind Waker intro music going along with this.
After watching game grumps kings quest play through, this lore is filling in the gaps so well.
King Edward the thick headed, more like it. Still I get the feeling that, being standard fantasy, this sort of blindness is par for the course.
Best Narrator EVER!!!! :)
Love the voicework Sven :) It really does add alot to the story.
Jeez King Edward is being punked by everyone!!
That was epic, hehe. Nice to start a medieval fantasy game now after all the sci-fi from Space Quest. :)
They should have turned to the Fairy Godmother to give them a baby. She lives in Daventry and is true of heart.
I can't tell you how excited I am that @8bitdame recommended this to me! This brings back some great memories.
@thetopcrusader2 It's Prince Rostislav, by Rachmaninov. I forgot to add it to the credits. :(
Man, Edward the Incompetent, nothing like selling out your people for a son, and it just went down hill from there, :P . He should have taken a page out of King Henry VIII's book.
Wait, Wait, taken, I think the senile king forgets he gave the first two treasures away, for his own selfish wants, thus dooming his people. You can't blame the Wizard and that little guy.
There's an edit function
Well actually the wizard promised them a child which they never got so that's fraud right there and the dwarf promised a cure for the queen which he didn't deliver, so that was fraud as well. So yeah, taken is pretty correct. All three individuals screwed him out of his most valuable posessions without giving anything back. I agree with the incompetence part. And the Henry part. That's what a sensible king would've done.
The little-known secret is that the chest actually holds a large but finite amount of gold, and whenever it runs out, some of the gold teleports back into the chest. So it's more like stealing.
Where did you learn that?
Even if it were an infinite amount of gold, wouldn't that be a cause for hyperinflation?
King Edward is both very daft and very unlucky...
A magnificent intro! ^_^
Mind if I ask you how did you manage to record that?
He reminds me of the story of the kind traveler...
Nice background music - what is it exactly if you don't mind my asking?
Nice narration!
Ah, more a let's read so far, but a nice start.
@Mewzard That's why it's part 0, not part 1. :-)
You should play A Knight to Remember
Gods, Daventry can't operate for five minutes without in infinite source of wealth, infinite knowledge, and infinite power?! Daventry deserves to shrivel and fade!
Yes!!
I think I have a new intro story for King's Quest that makes somewhat more sense, its only a rough but here it goes. (It picks up after Edward gives away the mirror).
Hearing that their king had arrogantly given away Daventry's most scared treasure, the Lords of Daventry were outraged and began to call Edward incompetent and demanded that he step down but he refused.
This lead to a civil war in the land led by the lords against King Edward. As the King saw his forces losing to the rebellious lords. In spite, He had the last two remaining scared treasures:
A shield that allowed it's wearer to be invincible and win every battle, he gave to a dwarf to hide.
and a Golden coin box which was always brimming with gold, which kept the Daventry's coffers full, which he gave two a witch to hide.
Once the King had finally been deposed, the Lords were dismayed to find that the remaining treasures were also lost, they feared their beloved Daventry falling into chaos and invaded by outside entities.
Suddenly, Brave Sir Graham stepped forward and vowed that he would find the treasures. The lords knew Sir Graham to be true in heart and a servant of the people and offered to him the crown should he retrieve the treasures.
oh dang, that's a great intro. It would have been interesting to see if that would have carried on in the game itself. Having to prove to the citizens that Sir Graham really was worthy of the crown.
I'm sorry, but in Sierra games, logic usually is left at the door.
@thegameulost I was thinking the same thing.... but alas! Ye olde fantasy kingdoms knew little of modern economic theory hehehe
just link to a world filled with hot bikini ladies and a beach with martinis and lots of food, boom vacation, screw this world in kings quest and making the game unwinnable xP
May I ask for your comment's hand in marriage?X3
