Swing Thing

- Tim demonstrates a number of toys that use the same mechanism - a piece of string with a weight at the end, that provides a kind of timing mechanism. Here we initially show a mass produced example of a toy using this mechanism, and we then show a number of craft toy versions that Tim has acquired over the years.
We believe that this mechanism was sometimes used in the Middle Ages as part of a clock escapement mechanism. Наука
OK. Tim has lots of pens in his collection. We will dig some of them out and make some videos. Thanks for the suggestion.
Swing thing pen :0
Thanks guys
Wel hello thear
Hi
I'm dropping a reply for no reason. This could probably serve as the proof of my existence.
the camera work in all of your videos is always fantastic. whoever is filming knows exactly when to zoom in and out, and they never mess up! very well done, as always! i love your channel.
One and two-post string-winding escapements have actually been used in very old clocks. They are included in large collections of escapements in books and museums.
Do you know of any examples I could look up?
@@aWOLtrooper There used to be an exhibit of 15 or so of operating escapement models at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, which I used to visit weekly as a child. I doubt that it is still there, for it is not flashy as suits the modern public taste.
On my way home from school in the 40's, it was always a delight to stop by the horologists shop window, when he had a clock with one of these working on the top.
ok thats it. ive been watching these for 2 hours
Still watching?
Still?
Still
Lol so are all of us 7 years later!
Still?
These seem like elaborate ways to get thwacked every time you accidentally enter the kill zone of the machine
In this house, we obey the laws of thermodynamics !
Dude you took my comment! XD
can you explain? don't understand this! like physics tho :(
It seems that it is a reference to The simpsons I don't know what episode is but I'm pretty sure a google search would bring the answer
sSunbeamM the first law of thermodynamics is that energy can't be created or destroyed.
Anyone from 2020
I enjoy your videos, Tim. Your video inspired me to make some of these. I made a video of the process that I think you might enjoy. Mine turned out great. I actually churned out a batch of 40 after my initial prototype. Thanks again, Tim!
Also, I mentioned this video in my video's description. Hopefully it'll steer even more traffic your way. Sharing the love.
Very nice! I really admire your craftsmanship!
Mrs. Yellow_Ledbetter - Thank you very much!
Can you post your video link here?
my girl friend loves pens, she collects a bunch of different kinds. it would make her day if you did a video on pens.
The titles.. they attract us. That's why we're all still here D:
The technical term for these is "flying pendulum", used in a clock it's a "flying pendulum escapement".
this is my excuse for not going outside
Fantastic! As a lover of all things novelty, I'm genuinely excited to see more of Tim's collection! I wish Tim was my uncle. xD
The first toy, I thought the penguin was fishing, then I read the sign which said that the empty cans are to be put into the garbage bins.
Very informative, nice extra! 😉 😘
I love tims passion, its so inspiring
I have made these and they are great toys mostly for adults, because kids are not content to just watch , they want to touch and play. I love these.
Thanks
I don't know why but watching that toy makes me so happy
Great toy collections. Thanks for doing demo.
sure - what is the request?
0:50: Does it in fact speed up as it winds up? I'd say that it only appears so, but can't really explain why.
Great video!
Give this guy 5 more cups of tea.
3:10 with subtitles
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha good one hahah
Zac Rosamond lol
yy
this is why is watch these videos with captions...
When you type in grandfather clock but forget the "L"
This channel is awesome
-911, what's your emergency?
-I hit my self in the eye with a swingy thing
-you what?
-I was making a RUclips video, and I hit myself in the eye with a steel ball
-okay then
-*hangs up
Why did the person calling for help hang up? because That's what your writting suggests while context says it'd be otherwise.
I saw a clock in Italy made by DaVinci that worked on this principle. The wrapping and unwrapping around the pole made it so that you could wind it and it would take much longer to unwind.
I had a Lego set that made one of these. I played with it for hours
I kinda want that Japanese toy. Wonder where I can find that one...
PC>PS4>String Thing>Xone
PC>Potato>everything else
braden8361 wii>
String Thing>PC>PS4>Xbone
you mean allen and heath audio mixer?
Ps4 is trash. I'll take the swing thing anyday
How big is this table?
Me encanto esto! Gracias!
What's that bear thing holding the yellow ball?
Beautiful!)
That penguin is the key to the energy crisis
Ok, we're juts gonna ignore the bear thing? Ok..
Sarmagophilis *just
your videos are cool
What are these things officially called?
It hides in the shadows, it is only known at "the swing thing".
Wow.
I like it!
you should do a video on key chains assuming you have some.
same priciple as the Jerome trapeze clock
0:25
That optical illusion right there had me tripping
If you wind the toy in the proper direction it works with less wasted motion. The last one shown was wound backwards and is quite obvious just watching it. You should be aware of this, but I don't think you were.
very nice
love your videos. can i make a request?
the cat loved this toy video kept trying to grab the ball!
*_YOUR GREAT IDEA FOR A NAME OF A TOY_*
*_"THE SWING THING..."_*
I just tried to make one of these with ice cream sticks and clothes hangar wire. I get too much friction for it to turn properly so I give up.
Who else wanted him to zoom out and shows us all of them at once?
I wonder if it tells time
this is the principle used for the escapement on the Horolovar Ignatz Flying Ball Clock. Terrible timekeepers, but fun to watch
I love it.
i'd be impressed if it'd charge itself and cause the next spin without the need of elastic bands.
i love them all
Creative name. Now I shall call my computer, computing thing
Dear sir if I want to purchase any game then?
And you filled it out! You are definition of awesome, sir or madam!
was expecting something a little different when i saw the title of this vid
I made a video on how to build one out of cardboard on my channel. These are so simple, yet so kewl!
would it be cool if someone made a clock with the same idea
01:38 is analogous to free rider employees existing in every organisation
Extraordinary
By watching this video makes me go ride a swing
wow, thank you
I saw a version of this at the Da Vinci Museum gift shop, they made it so that it could be used as a clock.
I just wanted to write the same! :-D In Vinci? Have been there in 1996. But I guess the clock was too expansive for me. (I was 13.)
cool toy
How old is tim
Kinda reminds me of tether-ball. Perpetual self playing tether-ball toy maybe?
アキカンはくずかごにすてましょう
Let's throw the empty cans in the wastebasket.
+Siren Hound Thanks. You saved me a comment. lol
The red penguin's sign at 0:12 reads that. 😊
1:28 one didn’t work properly bc it was shorter than the other from being wrapped around the horizontal moving bar
Does this device come close to a perpetual motion machine?
There is no attempt at perpetual motion here, since the pendulum is swinging off of energy from a rubber band. As soon as the band is unwound, it will stop. Perpetual motion is more based around the fact that you can't get any machine to work forever due to entropy, friction, imperfect parts, etc (such as an imbalanced wheel). This just "runs out of steam".
Jsidhu762 A perpetual motion machine is most likely impossible, in this universe at least.
+Jsidhu762 there is a rubber band that needs to be wound each time you start it... each round unwinds 1 turn...
It would be theoretically possible as long none of the energy exits the system. sadly theory and practice don't like eachother very much and it's imposible for us to build a 100% efficient machine.
Swing Thing - Maybe a Swing Crane would be a nice name?
Same idea as a clock escapement, dividing a steady rotational force into 'chunks', so to speak. I've seen a Meccano clock with this mechanism as an escapement, on RUclips.
I have a german clock that uses this escapement.
Cool!
Wow extraordinary
With a little bit of tweaking, maybe we can generate an electric current from this contraption.
mito bom,muito booooom!!!!
He loves it
The penguin one is cute
2:23
Its called a Tennessee Time Killer, I'm pretty sure
Better than my physics and math..
The first one is from plub cenguin i swear it is
Quick facts, the longer the string from the center of gravity (a.k.a stick ) , the more drag it creates where more speed is generated
2:29 elastication?
+Spoder Man Yes, that is the correct word.
now i feel like making one
my father has a clock, which has this kind of swing thing on the top instead of a pendulum
very curious
Did anyone else get queasy from worrying the ball was going to hit the camera??
the title should be tim the swinger
I made one of these in 2nd grade.
Сделал дочке за 15 минут ))) Спасибо)
I believe it's called the Tennessee time killer
I'm soo gonna make one
Ok um um I love it
I am going to make this swing
wish i had that penguin one...it would look amazing on my desk
00:08 probably came out in the middle ages ;D
How is IT possiblr for you to eran Moby and not call out the inventiry name
I might try to make one out of Lego.
I dreamed i had one of these.. WHY!?
