The band's predecessor was a band that Mashima formed with his classmate Sugiura when he was in junior high school. They started performing as THE BREAKERS in high school. At that time, Mashima played bass. Otsuki, who was in the same junior high school as them, temporarily joined as drummer. Otsuki introduced Shinohara to join as drummer (originally a bassist). Later, they welcomed Yomota, a junior at Shinohara's high school, as drummer, and Mashima was replaced by Shinohara on bass, with Mashima taking on guitar, making the band a four-piece. Yomota left the band, and Otsuki, an old friend, joined. With Sugiura's departure, the band became a three-piece. They continued to perform live with a support keyboard and guitar, but disbanded in 1985.
They performed mainly at live houses in Shinjuku and Harajuku, and performed with bands such as The Courts, The London Times, and The Shamrock, and gained popularity as heroes among the Mods. They were pioneers in bands performing in the pedestrian zone of Harajuku. Videos of their appearances at rock events and at the pedestrian zone can be seen on RUclips. They belonged to the music agency "Ribbon," which also represented Sheena & the Rockets and RC Succession.
Later, Mashima released solo songs such as "Andalusia ni Yorakute" and "Chimney no Aru Machi" that were originally performed by THE BREAKERS. Songs such as "Curry Rice Nyakanai," "Sasurai no Nicotine Yaro," "Yoru no Naka wo," "Rolling Jet Thunder," and "Okamoto-kun" were also originally based on songs performed at the time. Many of these songs were originally from the time of THE BREAKERS and later became the basis for THE BLUE HEARTS, THE HIGH-LOWS, and solo works.
Mashima's hairstyle hasn't changed much since his debut with THE BLUE HEARTS, but during his time with THE BREAKERS he had a variety of hairstyles, including a pompadour (influenced by 1960s Merseybeat bands) and a mohawk (influenced by Joe Strummer of The Clash), and his nickname was "Maccy" instead of "Marcy."
Later in his book, Mashima recalled that he named himself after an electrical breaker.[1] He said that the breakers would often trip in the apartment complex where he lived at the time.

真島が中学生の時、同級生の杉浦と組んだバンドが前身。高校の頃からTHE BREAKERSとして活動を始めた。当時は真島がベースを担当。中学が一緒だった大槻は一時的にドラムで参加していた。大槻の紹介で篠原がドラムとして加入（本来はベーシスト）。その後、篠原の高校の後輩である蓬田をドラマーとして迎え入れ、ベースの担当が真島から篠原に替わり、真島はギター担当になり4人編成となる。蓬田が脱退することになり、旧知の仲であった大槻が参加した。杉浦の脱退により3人編成となる。サポートのキーボード、ギターを入れてライブ活動を続行していたが、1985年に解散。
新宿、原宿のライブハウスを中心に活動し、ザ・コーツ、THE LONDON TIMES、ザ・シャムロックなどのバンドと共演し、モッズ族のヒーロー的存在として人気を集めていた。先駆者的に、原宿の歩行者天国でのバンド演奏を行っていた。当時のロックイベントに出演した映像や歩行者天国での映像はRUclipsなどで見ることができる。シーナ&ザ・ロケッツやRCサクセションが所属していた音楽事務所「りぼん」に所属。
後年、真島のソロで発表される「アンダルシアに憧れて」、「煙突のある街」は当時、THE BREAKERSで演奏されていた。「カレーライスにゃかなわない」、「さすらいのニコチン野郎」、「夜の中を」、「ローリングジェットサンダー」、「岡本君」なども元々は当時演奏されていた曲がベースになっている。元々はTHE BREAKERSの頃の曲で、後のTHE BLUE HEARTSやTHE HIGH-LOWS、ソロ作品の下敷きになった曲も多い。
THE BLUE HEARTSでデビュー以降、髪型があまり変わらない真島であるが、THE BREAKERS時代の髪型はリーゼント（1960年代のマージービート・バンドの影響）や、モヒカン（ザ・クラッシュのジョー・ストラマーの影響）など様々であり、ニックネームも「マーシー」ではなく「マッシー」だった。
真島は後年、自身の著書で、電気のブレーカーから命名したことを回顧[1]。当時住んでいた団地でブレーカーがよく落ちたとのこと。
