    Trying to make an electric truck with only batteries is silly. Battery only approach works great for small items, like phones, laptops, and small cars. However a big car, pick-up truck, and semi-truck are a perfect match for the fuel cell/battery combo.
    A battery is always needed as a middle man, getting power from regenerative breaking. And storing electricity from the fuel cell so it isn't always on, but in bursts of high output. The battery can be small, enough to drive 20-50 miles alone, as to not be too heavy and expensive.

    How is hydrogen stored in the car? Either under incredible pressure as a compressed gas or as a cryogenic liquid at 33K. As a liquid it will gas out at ambient temperatures turning the garage into a bomb, as gas under pressure it is already a potential bomb. There are alternative storage methods, such as storing it as a clathrate, trapped in between metal atoms. The problem, this is less space efficient, and the best metal to use is Palladium. I contend that until the safe storage problem is solved, hydrogen will not become the fuel of the future.

      John Bapple Not sure I understand your comment. in compressed gas form, it is calculated that to obtain 300 mile range, the hydrogen must be stored at 800 atmospheres. The gas can be liberated from a clathrate by heating, depending on the metal used this can require temperatures of 600 C. There are a number of other solid state storage methods in research, including metal and organic metal hydrides, but they seem to be a long way from volume production. I would be interested to know what storage technology Shell are using in California. I would not be happy to drive a car with a cylinder of hydrogen in the boot at 12760 psi.
      At the moment the most attractive alternative fuel might be ethanol used in an electric fuel cell. yesterday, I thought it might be methanol, but I have since learned about its toxic problems. Unfortunately, ethanol appears to be half as efficient as methanol and there are problems of crossover losses, where the fuel leaks across the proton membrane without generating power. A liquid fuel, at ambient temperature, electric fuel cell is the most attractive option, because it is easy to handle and gives a high energy storage density. Ethanol is a carbon based fuel, but in a fuel cell it does not generate NOx gasses and in can be produced in a carbon neutral fashion.

      Nigel Johnson my money is on the Fischer tropsch process and reactors to synthesise hydrocarbons with renewable energy, it would just bypass all of the bullshit of having to reconfigure transport and national grids to run off a different energy source

      Callum Gledhill The problem with continuing to use an internal combustion engine is the generation of NOx, though the injection of urea and water into into diesel engines exhaust gases has reduced this problem. I like the idea of electric cars, but how what is going to replace heavy goods diesel engines. Batteries do not offer the energy density required. Biofuel has the problem of producing it in sufficient quantity. Maybe some form of synthic diesel that burns cleaner.

      I make mine on-demand so there is never anymore than about 1/2 of a Litre of gas in the system at one time. My 4 cylinder takes about 6L per minute at 7000 RPM.

    I think a major switch from gas to hydro is gonna be a lot more difficult than gas to electric. I would buy a hydro car if I lived near somewhere that had a hydro filling station but the problem is that I don't. If I bought an electric car on the other hand, i could plug it into my wall and be ready to go the next day.

      @@Capeau no need for insults. The trouble with converting electric to hydrogen and back again is the losses. You loose energy at every step including transporting the stuff about once you have it. I guess either option beats burning petrol and diesel though especially for people living in towns. Time will tell

      @@Capeau OK well I've not seen any videos on this particular topic by tesla owners. I would be interested to see your data on the losses from fueling electric cars with hydrogen vs electric from the grid. I suspect both systems be exist going forwards as there are plenty of people with no access to charging locations at home. Hydrogen cars are a little behind at the moment cost and infrastructure wise so it will be interesting to see what happens.

      those batteries would need to be charged, which takes time. A Hydrogen powered car would only take “minutes” to refill. The charging time is one of the drawbacks of battery powered electric cars.

    What about shell killing a whole African village for oil?

    Water vapour still contributes to global warming, largely more so than Co2, just water vapour doesn't last anywhere near as long in the atmosphere as Co2 does. But if everyone is using it in their cars that'd be a different story.

      CO2 levels LAG climate temperature rise by almost 100yrs consistently since records have been recorded. CO2 does not contribute to climate change. Climate change is a religion. You've all been conned.

    You can’t run a car on water there just isn’t enough hydrogen to run off, you would need concentrations of it to run a car. Hydrogen is the most common element however most of it is out of reach just beyond the sky.

    The only way I can see hydrogen being an efficient energy source is if it were the waste product of another process.. The production of deuterium for heavy water in fission reactors, fuel in fusion reactors, or hydrogen bomb formulations.

    Hydrogen is s flammable, really really flammable. If the car crashes and the hydrogen tanks get damaged, wouldn't they catch fire and explode???

      Air is more common than fire. There is danger with petrol, yes, but one crack in a hydrogen tank and the whole thing blows up. Unless you didn't know, air is everywhere. Fire is not everywhere.

      I use the battery in my car, then I burn the hydrogen and the engine runs the alternator . Self contained. :)

      Hydrogen is only combustible with Oxygen present. There would be a medium between the two plates that would let hydrogen pass through but not oxygen because the hydrogen is much smaller than oxygen.

    Use energy to split water ; use energy to transport and distribute hydrogen ; waste resources letting automotive industry sell a new generation of vehicles. Better to have clean as possible central power generation and electric vehicles.

      Stephen Maddalena Not necessarily. If hydrogen fuel can be better (e.g can drive for longer) then it is justified as it is pretty much the same thing. So I wouldn't waste money making in available everywhere. It'd still be useful in some places.

      Hydrogen can be transported by pipeline (mainly for safety reasons).

      Joseph the issue is hydrogen can escape any container, so will leak over time, it makes metal brittle over time meaning pipes (or engine components) will need replaced.
      my issue is, nowhere has shown servicing costs for hydrogen cars. as the fuel cell will need regular servicing or replacement and the tank will need pressure checked as you wont want one of them rupturing... (much like scuba tanks)
      you don't get any of that with electric. but I do see hydrogen useful for construction or exploratory vehicles

    Cool but I don't like the idea of having hydrogen tanks in a car. Seems like a recipe for explosions. If one of those tanks ruptures, everyone is dead.

      It’s extremely buoyant - 14.4 times lighter than air (natural gas is only 1.7 times lighter than air). Hydrogen is four times more diffusive than natural gas or 12 times more than gasoline fumes, so leaking hydrogen rapidly disperses up and away from its source.35 If ignited, hydrogen burns rapidly with a nonluminous flame that can’t readily scorch you at a distance, emitting only one-tenth the radiant heat of a hydrocarbon fire and burning 7% cooler than gasoline. Although firefighters dislike hydrogen’s clear flame because they need a viewing device to see it in daylight, victims generally aren’t burned unless they’re actually in the flame, nor are they choked by smoke.
      Hydrogen mixtures in air are hard to explode, requiring a constrained volume of elongated shape. In high-school chemistry experiments, hydrogen detonates with a “pop” when lit in a test tube, but if it were in free air rather than a long cylindrical enclosure, it wouldn’t detonate at all. Explosion requires at least twice as rich a mixture of hydrogen as of natural gas, though hydrogen’s explosive potential continues to a fourfold higher upper limit. Hydrogen does ignite easily, needing 14 times less energy than natural gas, but that’s of dubious relevance because even natural gas can be ignited by a static-electricity spark.36 Unlike natural gas, however, leaking hydrogen encountering an ignition source is far likelier to burn than to explode, even inside a building, because it burns at concentrations far below its lower explosive limit. Ignition also requires a fourfold higher minimum concentration of hydrogen than of gasoline vapor. In short, in the vast majority of cases, leaking hydrogen, if lit, will burn but not explode. And in the rare cases where it might explode, its theoretical explosive power per unit volume of gas is 22 times weaker than that of gasoline vapor. It is not, as has been claimed, “essentially a liquid or gaseous form of dynamite.”

      Michael Edmond when I mean battery, you don't have to recharge the battery and wait 4 too 8 hours or something. Basically when you run out petrol you got to the station. When you run out of hydrogen you got to the station. Also what happens to the batteries one there broken? More recycling ect. Bad for the planet.
      TBH i would rather drive my v8 Land Rover. Because I know that it's not causing the planet any harm. Considering how these new cars are made.

      BP PH it only takes that long to charge if you plug it into a wall socket to charge. my mate has a leaf and he gets 80% charge in 30 min from the local fast charger.
      what happens if a battery fails... the same thing if an engine fails, broken bits are replaced. but it's already shown that the batteries are far more resilient than the manufacturers expected.
      and batteries are 98% recyclable, and unlike car engines can be used for second life energy storage long before they are dismantled and recycled. as for bad for the environment, your v8 uses oil and fuel, electric cars don't. and lithium is not environmentally bad to mine, and less than 3% of all lithium is used in vehicle batteries anyway. nobody complained about it when mobile phones use it!

      Michael Edmond at least I can go 400 miles on one tank lol them five minutes to re fuel. My tools use lithium batteries and they are all flat and it takes 1 hour and half to re charge them. The energy used to recycle those batteries is stupid. You could build and Run 2 cars for 5 years and they will use as much energy as recycling those batteries. Also using the fast charge points at Nissan dealers shortens the length of the battery
      Anyway how do think the wind turbines which are a waster of time btw, power stations and solar farms cope with more demand for electricity. They won't they will burn fossil fuels for the demand. Pointless.

      BP PH actually, the grid here says they could easily cope with over 2.5 million evs right now with no further expansion, and true, you could go 400 miles on one tank, but I very rarely ever have to do that, and if I do, I like to stop half way and have something to eat!
      as for the energy to recycle batteries, that's an over estimated figure based on end of life recycling, as I said, batteries can and will be used via second life programs, and your tools take how long? I have lithium power tools and they take 30 min tops to charge and have lasted me years!

    they are clever but have they got the car on the wrong side of the road or have they got the wrong car as the steering wheel is wrong, lol, talk about correct information. How can they be trusted if 'they' haven't seen it, yes explosions in the tanks and so on but a better way for cars in the future, would rather this than petrol or diesel.

    Hydrogen fuel had a chance to shine in the 90's but failed. Now its time to tell the big oil companies to get lost. Electric/battery is the future. We don't need you anymore. Byebye

      Nah, if you use a medium like Hydrite to aid the storage in a tank, if released against an open fire through a puncture of the tank or something, it will smolder not explode.
