  • I was gonna wait a couple of days to publish this so i could space out my uploads... but I just could not wait, i loved this video too much!
    Hope you enjoyed this wild list of giallo subcategories/subgenres and my heartfelt recommendations! When I say I "came up with these" I know I didn't invent these terms and I'm not the first to decribe gialli with any of these categories. But I'm saying I did whip up this list without referencing any other subgenre list (if one exists!).

    I would add the jet-set giallo. Glamorous rich people in exotic locations.
    Those Carroll Baker ones, especially. 👍

    This is a fantastic video Katie. As a practical guide it is invaluable - your knowledge and tastes within the genre are impeccable. And as always, the plug to my top 5 rural giallo vid is much appreciated!
    Since your recommendations for each category are so on point, my picks are going to be along the lines of "if you've already watched the ones recommended in the video and are still looking for more, try these":
    80s gialli: Nothing Underneath (1985). A giallo set in the world of 80s fashion, featuring Donald Pleasance. I know it sounds like it'll be crap - but it's actually one of the best 80s entries in the genre.
    90s gialli: Body Puzzle (1992). Lamberto Bava's last film. Not brilliant but has some very interesting ideas and memorable scenes. An effective 90s giallo - if only they could have kept making them like this.
    Psychological gialli - Footprints on the Moon (1975). Our gal Florina having her mind messed with in a big way. Lovely cinematography in the EUR district of Rome and on location in Turkey.
    Soap opera gialli: I call these ones "Gaslighters". Perversion Story (1969). Fulci's first giallo. Jean Sorel plays a prickish doctor whose infirm wife (gorgeous Marisa Mell) dies. He then encounters an erotic dancer who is her spitting image. Mindgames ensue.
    Slasher gialli: Body Count (1986) by Ruggero Deodato. Look, it's not brilliant. But it has an impressive cast, and it's Deodato's attempt at an American slasher. There are worse ways to spend your time.
    Rural gialli: The Bloodstained Shadow (1978). Antonio Bido watched House with the Laughing Windows and thought to him self - nice, I want to try making one of them.
    Destination gialli: Crimes of the Black Cat (1972). It's a great film, if a little derivative of Argento. And it's set in beautiful Copenhagen!
    Gothic gialli: Death Smiles on a Murderer (1973). Joe D'Amato's first film. A period piece giallo! Set around the turn of the 20th century, I reckon. Creepy.
    Supernatural gialli: The Psychic (1977) by Lucio Fulci. Name says it all. Psychic powers feature.
    I'm really interested to hear more about your own unique custom categories - bring on the seaside gialli! Maybe another video in future featuring them, perhaps?
    Here are some recommendations from two of my own categories in the meantime:
    Sleazy gialli: Giallo in Venice (1979). Really slimy and disgusting. Lots of disgusting sex that is surely intended to repulse the viewer as much as the gore is. And it is very gory.
    Sad gialli: The Pyjama Girl Case (1977). This one is a supreme downer. Guaranteed to cry at the end. Based on a real-life case. Set in Australia so could also be considered destination gialli.
    And yes everyone come and join us on the Discord! The giallo and Italian film community are genuinely the best people. Past few weeks I've had so many good recommendations and had such great discussions about these flicks. Long may it continue.

      So glad to have found a place where others appreciate my terrible taste! 😁😁
      And thank you for your wonderful recommendations!! I appreciate the time you took to do that. Some on here I’ll definitely have to check out. And how did I forget about Footprints?! Yeah psychological is RIGHT!!!
      Death Smiles on a Murderer is so gothic, you’re right! Also you got me thinking about “period giallo” as a category - though right now all I can think of is Death Smiles & Hotel Fear.
      The Psychic was a great rec as well. We need to publish these in a book or something!
      I love the extra categories you came up with. How could I forget sleazy gialli! When I rewatched Forbidden Photos this week, I thought to myself, that could be a Sad Giallo as well.

    Another excellent outing, Katie..as always. I've been watching these films all my life(growing up in the 70s was certainly a trippy time)...nice extensive research. Interesting names for some of your categories...love it!!
    Three more for your list: Bava's Blood and Black Lace(1964), Armando Crispino's Macchi Solari (Sunspots, Autopsy [some prints, the on-screen title is The Victim])(1975) & Luigi Cozzi's The Dark is Death's Friend(also known as The Spider or The Killer Must Kill Again(1975))... another great jet-set/destination/and to sleep to(haha): Bava's Five Dolls for an August Moon(it's got your girl Edwige in it...looking very sexy and 21 in that flic, and a killer sndtrk. Could also be Seaside... 😉)....I will definitely chk out those links..thnx so much for all you do!! Just thought I'd let a ho kno 😂..... Ciao!! 💀🔪💀🔪💀🔪

    How’d I miss this video? 😝
    Yes, there’s definitely a lot of Giallo sub-categories!
    I agree with the other comment about a “jet-set” Giallo, which always seem to showcase the classic TWA or Pan Am jets taxiing the runway at some point. They’re centered around models/fashion, set in Rome and everyone has an affluent lifestyle (probably quite a few that category).
    I definitely have an “iconic” Giallo. Set in Rome, red phone, spiral staircase, generous displays of the legendary J&B bottle and it MUST have the iconic look of the assassin that we all know and love. Black Fedora, black trench coat and gloves.
    For me the iconic Gialli are Blood and Black Lace, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (2 obvious ones) but also So Sweet, So Dead.
    I also include The Case of the Bloody Iris and Black Belly of the Tarantula in this group (overlooking the amber color gloves on the assassins in those movies). The Case of the Bloody Iris may be thee iconic jet-set Giallo??
    There definitely needs to be an old school iconic jet-set Giallo made. No modern takes and fresh twists!! Give us the classic, done perfectly and it will be a success!

    This maybe would fall under your "funny giallo" genre but "Parody Giallo"? As in the point of the movie is to parody the gialli films (while also being a giallo itself) rather than just being a giallo that is funny, if that makes sense? Off the top of my head, I would say Il Mostro (1977) and No Thanks, Coffee Makes Me Nervous (1982).
    How about "Not Quite a Giallo" or "Giallo-Adjacent"? Movies that feel like a gialli or are similar-to or inspired-by, or films that are often incorrectly thought of as gialli?
    I have quite a few recommendations in this category:
    Suspiria (1977)
    Malignant (2021)
    Dressed to Kill (1980)
    Last Night in Soho (2021)
    Frenzy (1972)
    Berberian Sound Studio (2012)
    Eyes of Laura Mars (1978)

    SPOLERS for The Red Queen Kills Seven Times!!!!!!! ----------------------- I wouldn't call it supernatural, because there was nothing supernatural going on in the end. And after the prologue they kinda reveal the main culprit and as a viewer you already know at that point that someone is just toying around with the so-called curse? But I absolutely love that movie, a perfect blend of "modern" giallo and gothic horror. And that theme song has been stuck in my head for years.

    • @KatieoftheNight
      @KatieoftheNight  2 года назад

      Yeah, but i would still consider it a supernatural theme as this paranormal legend shapes the story!

    As someone who is just starting to get into giallo films I have a question. Would suspiria be considered a giallo film or no? I can see why maybe not because of the supernatural aspect but it has a lot of giallo elements and I always see a lot of people debate whether or not it fits into that category. Btw I just saw it for the first time and it’s one of my favorite horror movies I’ve ever seen.

    • @KatieoftheNight
      @KatieoftheNight  Год назад

      Ya know... this would be a good video topic! Maybe someone else has already done such a video. It's really a hot debate but it seems like most seasoned giallo fans say that it is not a giallo. But like you say, it contains so many giallo elements AND it's the reason why a lot of people even found giallo. I always call it The Gateway Movie for that reason. Personally, for me, while I don't have a problem with supernatural elements in a giallo, I do think the story of Suspiria grows to become something MUCH BIGGER than what a giallo is, if that makes sense! I am so glad you loved it, it's such a great movie.

    • @michaellt2386
      @michaellt2386 Год назад

      @@KatieoftheNightthat would be a great video as I dont think I’ve seen many on RUclips about that. Suspiria is the gateway to giallo films because it was the first one I saw ever since I was introduced to them in my international film class in college. Ever since then I’ve been trying to watch as many as I can from Argento to bava to martino. Giallo films are so good they’re just not talked about as much. Thanks for the reply by the way.

    A Blade in the Dark and You'll Die at Midnight from Lamberto Bava can go in the slasher group. Have you seen You'll Die at Midnight?
