  • This lecture was recorded at the Paulist Center in Boston, MA on October 1, 2015 (apologies for the poor lighting on location, but the audio is very good).
In this presentation, Franciscan friar Daniel P. Horan, OFM, places the new encyclical in context, offers an overview of its contents, discusses key themes of the text, highlights what is new about it, and suggests ways this teaching can still be developed.

The words "the greater good" puts individual people second. So we don't really matter as individual human beings. Also population was mentioned as one of the problems of planet earth. What is that inferring? Just wondering.

The earth needs relief from "dominion" rulers. The pope(s) are not excluded from this type of rulership for many, many centuries, including from the beginning of papal rulership. Why the change of heart now, and where is the global apology, and repentance on the part of the pope, or does he actually believe he is God. Just wondering.

Don't blame humanity for climate change. Blame a certain segment of individuals for ruining the earth; ie. Your pharmaceutical corporations, big business, conglomerates, religion, and politicians. They have harmed the earth, and it's people. The world of people are not at fault, but have suffered the blunt brutality of "dominion" rulers for centuries. The people have suffered, and require rehabilitation to learn to love one another. I believe love is the cure; not the pope.

Kangaroo charred where it stood. I will see that in my mind the rest of my life. For the first half of the last century we acted in ignorance. We know better now, so (rhetorical question) what's our excuse?
