Yeah brah yk what you’ve improved a lot too since you’ve started your channel. It’s crazy seeing how much you’ve grown!
i love you nathan
Thank you bro. Trick is to play fewer notes! 😂
@@bettersax Got that right Jay!
Dude! You were playing blues language based on the blue scale! I have so much respect for you, you’re interviewed all my heroes, you’ve done wonders for the Jazz saxophonist community. Let me know when you’re in San Antonio. There’s a good place that I think would love to have you Play at. JazzTX. If you’re ever here, let me know so that I can hopefully get a lesson! Jose Suarez, Berkeley College of music,‘ 94.
Thank you.
Very good stuff!!!
Sign me up!! Vincent Herring has quickly emerged as my model for jazz alto saxophone for sure!
Studied with Phil Woods!
thank you for this information and greetings from Vienna! ;-))
Yeah Jay!
It's really called Major Pentatonic b7
I'm a North Texas State guy, 1982-1986
I mean, it's called what people call it. So you're not wrong...
NAMM had the bari and soprano pro types there or….🤔🎶🎵🎶🎷
I can't see: is Mr Herring playing a Buescher true tone? Thanks for the answer
He is playing a Yamaha 82ZII with a ton of extra engraving. There is a video on RUclips somewhere highlighting the instrument. It is very beautiful and made just for him!
What are your thoughts on the D’Addrio select jazz alto mouthpiece, is it worth it?
It's alright. I started on a select jazz, and it sounds good. Definitely has a good feel as well. It's really between that and a modern meyer for beginners
Get a Meyer 7MM, the real sound of jazz alto!
@@grantkoeller8911 dude you are offering the worst advice for beginners
What upgrades or modifications would you make to a saxaphone to play different? Thanks!
Reed choice, mouthpiece, the sax itself, but mostly you. You make up 80% of the sound
brass tone boosters, killer mouthpiece, bare Brass body, no lacquer, and over sized thumb screw
play good reeds, like Rigotti 3hard or Vandoren Green box java 3.5
@@crazycrafter1236john definitely don't just straight to 3.5s or anything like that. In fact, in jazz it's much better to use softer reeds. Tone boosters are a myth that don't actually help, no lacquer and bare brass body don't change your sound very much, they just make your horn look older. And an oversized thumb screw only helps if you have large hands.
@@crazycrafter1236john definitely do not listen to a guitar player for sax advice as well
Those kind of thumbnails are really 🙈
So, it's a major pentatonic with a flat 7
Normally, a major pentatonic is - 1, 2, 3, 5, 6
This one is - 1, 2, 3, 5, b7
The minor pentatonic would be 1, b3, 4, 5, b7
To get to the blues scale from the minor pentatonic, simply add the b5. - 1, b3, 4, b5, 5, b7
The dominant (mixolydian) is basically a major scale from 1-5 and then a minor (Dorian) on top from 6th scale degree to the octave (1/8). That means that the 7th is flattened.
With the natural 3rd, this makes the scale a 'major' scale. The defining characteristic is the flat 7.
(1,2,3,5,b7)
