I voted against Romney in 2012, and didn't agree with 80% of his politics. But, especially today, you can't help but to respect him. He, like all the other reasonable Republicans have either been forced out or are sick of the rot and decay of the party, and chose not to run again. This is a shame. He can still work with those he disagrees with and puts the country above his own self interests. Unlike 95% of today's GOP.
Being a sheep with no mind of your own and not doing what the people who elected you, sent you there to do is 100% wrong. All the Dem sheep doing what Hakeem (Nancy) tell them to do is not governing. That is corruption.
Especially considering he signed the "Romneycare" in 2006 as the governor of Massachusetts. Romneycare later was copied and modified into "Obamacare", proving that if Republicans and Democrats worked together, a lot of good things could happen.
Well I agree there are too many old people in high places in government. So I'm not broken up that this 76 or 77 year old decided to pass the torch. And I am a not so young boomer.
Didn't vote for Mr. Romney for president, as my views were better represented by his opponent in that election. But I have great respect for his integrity and political courage.

So much respect for Sen Romney. Like others, I didn't vote for him but I always respected him. I agreed with some of his ideals, and disagreed with others; his politics didn't resonate with me but that doesn't mean I didn't hear things I didn't like. I always felt he was dedicated to the United States in a holistic way. His voice has been an important one in American politics and values. He's a good man and he and his family are good people. I wish him well and will read his memoir. I hope his departure from politics does not mean his voice will also exit. I can tell him how I judge his legacy: a good man who contributed true commitment to the country, some great ideas and some not, but always a good man and good American. I wish I could say the same for as many other politicians.

@@al-bot1094 It’s fair to say that there are many garbage politicians in every era regardless of party. You’re only stating the obvious. I think more and more about a movie I saw on TV, "Rhinoceros". It was originally a one man play. Gene Wilder starred in the movie and was magnificent. If you understood history, economics, global affairs, philosophy, and/or political science as much as you think you do you'd realize how much of a mistake you're making. I lived in MA when Romney was governor. I don’t remember anyone saying anything terrible about him. MA is very, very blue and he worked with the Dems that controlled the rest of the state. Admittedly I was a postdoc and not paying attention to politics like I am now because I never comprehended how truly fragile our democracy could become, slowly and then all at once. Hemingway really nailed how we perceive things happening.
Our democracy is fragile but not for the reasons you likely think. It is the Left, which has gone insane and that is not hyperbole. The counter reaction is the populism and Trump. When Obama voiced seeking to fundamentally change the USA and then attempted to do that, therein was the genesis of the issue. No one sought to overturn the Constitution on Jan 6. That is a foolish assertion. Also, Romney voting for impeachment, was so embarrassing and such a politically stupid thing to do. It was based upon hatred of Trump not the merits of the impeachment articles. Romney thinks he is standing for principle, but he fails to look very deeply. He does not see where the actual threats lie. It is with identity politics, the denial of fundamental biological realities, institutionalizing racism and overtly flirting with Marxist-socialist economics. The country cannot stand if any of these succeed.
And in 2004 when he was governor the Democrats were sure that John Kerry was going to win the election and were worried that Romney would pick a Republican. The Democrats could not let that happen so they passed a law taking that power away from the governor and called instead for a special election. When Ted Kennedy was dying of brain cancer Democrats needed a Senator in Kennedy seat to help pass Obamacare. There was no time for a special election because that would take months. At the time the governor of Massachusetts was a Democrat so the Democrats wanted to change the law again and give the power to appoint a Senator back to the governor. Their dirty plan failed and a Republican was elected to replace Ted Kennedy.
I also was living in MA when he was gov. and I thought he did a great job. If only there were at least a few more voices of reason, decorum and maturity in the House,I would have more hope for the future.
...and, some of us did vote for him because of the work he was successful as an Economist. At the time, job creation was critically needed. I did vote for him, over Obama's second term---as a Democrat. ...because I didn't see that the job creation that Obama was working on---in the Healthcare and Education sectors---was coming into fruition. Those results didn't show up until his second term. What I've learned since is Republicans are obstructions. We're seeing it, at its worst now. They'll do anything to stop the business of governing to occur; getting paid millions each for doing so; and, wasting the people's tax dollars for themselves along the way.

Mitt Romney, like John McCain, is another one-time GOP presidential nominee who is just plain wrong on the issues but was of the Old Guard, a man who you could trust on character, to do know that he at least some idea of the ideals, principles and integrity that he was supposed to live up to. Growing up in a military family, I thought I was a Republican, and despite attending one of those East Coast liberal elite colleges, I remained one. Until one day while listening to that buffoon Rush Limbaugh, I realized I wasn't. Right up until the 90s you could expect House Republicans to be decently mannered. Right until Newt Gingrich happened. To me, he really set trend in motion for where the GOP stands today, a hollow caricature of itself. Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney were the last of the Old Guard House Republicans, as young as they were. These remaining Republicans can't find two scruples to rub together among them and couldn't hold a candle to the old ones. The Party of Lincoln is dead.

@@user-rn9pq2qs6bYou’re inferring a lot from someone saying he’s respectable especially compared to his contemporaries in the party he is a member of, user.
I have a lot of respect for Mitt Romney and I do believe he is a man of integrity, but he outlined exactly the problem with today’s Republican party with a simple comment: “I come from the party of Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, George W. Bush, John Mccain…” Those men, particularly the first three he mentioned, laid the groundwork for American politics today. They may have had a more respectable appearance to the outside world, but the policies they actually put in place hurt millions of people and endangered the most vulnerable communities in our nation. They contributed to the dissolve of social programs that uplifted the poor and pumped all that money into a military industrial complex and police state that has become a blood thirsty monstrosity terrorizing innocent people all over the world, even within our own nation. That was their true character- not the polite presentation they performed on television. Trump may be unbearable, but he is the personification of the ugliness these Republican policies have always represented starting with Reagan. That’s why his supporters like him. He isn’t afraid to say and do what they all secretly want to say and do but were too afraid to because they wanted to be perceived as polite even if they really had no compassion for the poor, no concern for people of color or immigrants, and had no desire to achieve equality in this country. He is the truth of what most Republicans really are deep at the core, hidden underneath all that well written, elusive, neoliberal rhetoric. What good are niceties and cleverly worded speeches when it’s only a cover up to push a racist, misogynist, imperialist agenda?
Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush, I can understand why people don’t like them, and recognize the mistakes they made, especially George W. Bush, but John McCain? No absolutely not. John McCain was one of, if not the only politician who wasn’t the stereotypical politician. He worked for the people, not the party. Reagan was more for the party instead of people, but not entirely. I can’t say the same for the Bush’s. I don’t know if their politics are what caused this chaos were in now, because before Trump got into politics, people didn’t care if you were a democrat or a republican. Today, everything is based on politics.
And what did saints Bill Clinton and Barack Obama do about this? They were even more interventionist than their predecessors and made no economic reforms.
Very one sided - Romney got the subject of expanded health care on the table in Massachusetts- if he hadn’t shown this could be a bipartisan success Obamacare might not have gotten off the ground, he was right-the ONLY potus candidate- about russia, arguably the most important foreign policy insight of the past two decades-most importantly, he is a decent ethical empathetic man- whcih in case you haven’t noticed, we ALL desperately need right now, far more than anything you mentioned .
I never really hated him. 2012 was the first election where I was mature and cognizant enough to participate even though I was still too young to vote. He NEVER seemed like a bag guy. I just did not like his policies. I thought they were incorrect and inappropriate. There was no way to know that would be the last election which was "normal."
He’s an out of touch elitist like Donny but that’s where the similarities end. He still has integrity and love for the country and the constitution, Mitt that is.
Not supporting craziness, hatred and violence should be a basic attribute of any leader. Mitt is amongst the few left in the Republican party. I may have to change my vote to democrat after he leaves or look for reasonable republicans to support.

When he told George Santos that he didn’t belong there in congress while other republicans said nothing , it made me have a newfound respect for him. I could tell he was just so over what’s happening in the GOP lately.
Yeah, that was a real shocker and accomplished nothing except for a modest show of disapproval for a fraudster who should have been booted out of the congress by now. He is "so over what's happening in the GOP" now that he's retiring and can speak a little louder. It's not "lately," either. This sinking of the GOP into a toxic swamp has been going on for many years, before the deranged demagogue occupied our White House. The military wrote a paper saying they’re reliant on China for inputs to fight China. Listen to luke gromen. The issue is the monetary system and inflation and ever bigger deficits or debt to promote credit creation so we can avoid a Great Depression if credit contraction happens. Now that he's retiring and is the subject of a book coming out authored by his favorite apologist, he's finally mustered some real courage? Where have we heard that before?
We have vastly different social and political views, but without doubt he has the courage of his convictions and he is a person of high moral character.
Let's not forget this was the same guy that told wealthy donors that food, housing and healthcare was an entitlement and he wasn't concerned with those who didn't have it.
As I do agree that was something that was highly wrong and messed up, I think sometimes we forget that people do grow up and learn from mistakes including our politicians. I think that it's time to honor those who do at the end of the day care in some regard about human decency and truth.
This. He loves Republican radicalism when it was about hurting poor people and stealing democracy from them. Democracy has to be avoided in regards to poor voters and their votes have to be skillfully sidestepped. But getting rid of all democracy? Switching elections off completely? Even for rich people?! *clutches pearls and begins hyperventilating*
I'm not trying to be one of those guys that is deliberately trying to detract from your comment. But do you have a source? I would just be genuinely interested in hearing or reading that.
When Romney told wealthy donors that "food, housing, and healthcare were an entitlement he wasn't concerned with those who didn't have it," he was no different than the high majority of Republicans at that time. The fact is Republicans have been radicalized far beyond that. As Radical as Romney was then, he is considered a moderate now.
The last few seconds of this video says it ALL!!!!! NEVER FORGET 1/6/21 NEVER! FOR OUR COUNTRY!!!!!!! Great respect for Mitt Romney! He is only 1 of 2 or 3 republicans that have a spine and will tell the truth!!!!!
May not like some of his politics but he's a good decent person, who didn't let pear pressure tell him who to vote for, especially within his own party
Not a Republican by any means and an atheist, but I really admire Romney. He is the only member of the Republican Senate that has any balls at all. Even his stepping aside involved a great deal of courage, and I applaud him for that.
If Senate Republicans had voted with Romney on Trump impeachment, that party would be rid of Trumpism by now. That doesn’t mean they would have policies that would help the majority of Americans.
I could listen to Mitt Romney speak all day and never tire because he speaks the obvious truth in a mature and sincere manner. No baby talk or lies like you hear every time Donald Trump speaks.
I was raised by parents who admired Senator Romney's Father to the point that my dad had a photograph of him from some event where they'd crossed paths. I have known the name since my childhood (I'm in my 60's) & I have been aware of who Mitt Romney is/was most of my life. I, unlike my parents, have never been a Republican (nor Democrat) but in 2012 when he ran for office I was torn between who to vote for. More than I've ever been before or since. I know what he speaks of when he says "character". It has been difficult to watch the current cast of characters (clowns) do their malfeasance upon America. Senator Romney held to the "rod" his faith speaks of & he stayed true to himself, his family, his faith, and I think to US. Didn't agree frequently, but isn't that what it's about? Agree to disagree but still get things done?
Hey, I'm a Pratt. Honestly, I'm ashamed to be distantly related to him. I found his "68% don't pay taxes" statement insulting as for a time I was indeed part of that percentage.

Mitt Romney, no matter how you may feel about his policy positions, he has character and he's not going to be bullied to stay in power. What i wish he could understand is that the unfettered capitalism of his party has brought us to the conditions we all experience today. The Republican party is as much a threat to this country as were the southern secessionists. ...but he can't see that, apparently, yet!
He's proven his integrity in many instances. If you think it's easy to stand for truth in Washington, you're mistaken. You might be a Trump supporter (and yes, I'm a republican)
I give him credit. He actually voted to impeach Donald Trump twice. He stood by his principles and he's speaking out further now in his book and in public. Maybe Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger rate the same, but Romney was the party's presidential candidate. His word carries weight. Too bad most of his party isn't listening.
That was a very bad idea. Voting to impeach a President for non-crimes, no felonies or misdemeanors but fabricated offenses, was a horrible idea, which flew in the face of the Constitution.

Ole Mitt is a good dude. That was one of the best elections we ever had (in my life anyway), both parties would have made us proud. Keep up the good fight
Id be willing to vote for Romney, Liz Cheney or Matt Kinzinger. America can survive 8 years of them over 4 more of Trump. But im voting Biden even if he has full blown dementia and SS has to wheel him around in a wheelchair. Hell if he is dead and on ballot i would vote for him if its Dead Biden or Live Trump. Im Also good w Harris, Newsom or Cuomo. Republicans need to lose power for 4-8 years to be motivated to fix their broken party
I am from Massachusetts and thoroughly thought Romney was a great governor. I think had he been elected in 2012 we would be living in a much different America now. A more proud to be an American type of America.
I was going to say the same thing. I voted for Obama both times. But I always thought he and Mccain put Country over party every day.

Not working 9-5 every day, not working outside, not eating processed food, having good genetics, and having a balanced head on your shoulders can do wonders.
I did not vote for him, and I did not agree with any of his ideas, but he is no MAGA Republican.

Nobody cares
I respect Mitt Romney’s values, and I’m not a Republican. I think he would make a great President upholding the constitution of our nation…
Any Republican president will have to rubber stamp the anti-ecology, anti-social justice and tax cuts to the super wealthy, its the Republican agenda.
...and, some of us did vote for him because of the work he was successful as an Economist.
Funny. Romney should ask himself what has he done for the people that elected him to represent them. All he did was just get rich while in politics
Moderate Democrat here, I now wish he would have beaten Obama because maybe Trump would have never been president.

He didn't have any character until it's too late
Crazy when Romney seems reasonable.
Me too!
I have disagreed with Romney on many things but have immense respect for his conviction.
What have you disagreed with him on?
Gotta say Mitt looks ridiculously good for a 76 year old lol

How’s Biden and the democrats working out for you? I guess you’re rich and work from home. Lucky you.
Yes, but he waited until he retired to release this information.
I have a lot of respect for Mitt Romney and I do believe he is a man of integrity, but he outlined exactly the problem with today’s Republican party with a simple comment: “I come from the party of Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, George W. Bush, John Mccain…”
Those men, particularly the first three he mentioned, laid the groundwork for American politics today.
Excellent. Well written. Pitch perfect, thanku.
well said!...this is exactly how the 'free' World outside the US see it!
Odd I hated him in 2012, but now I have a totally different perception of him now. A respectful Republican and I wish there were more like him.
Makes you realize how normal old school Republicans really were compared to what we have now, a party of kowtowing cultists.
Trump did for Romney what the Star Wars sequels did for the prequels
I never really hated him. 2012 was the first election where I was mature and cognizant enough to participate even though I was still too young to vote. He NEVER seemed like a bag guy. I just did not like his policies. I thought they were incorrect and inappropriate. There was no way to know that would be the last election which was "normal."
He’s an out of touch elitist like Donny but that’s where the similarities end. He still has integrity and love for the country and the constitution, Mitt that is.
Romney never planned on winning in 2012. His job was to make sure Obama was reelected.
Not supporting craziness, hatred and violence should be a basic attribute of any leader. Mitt is amongst the few left in the Republican party. I may have to change my vote to democrat after he leaves or look for reasonable republicans to support.
While I don’t always agree with Mr Rodney’s politics I do highly appreciate his character. He is an unabashed follower of the Constitution. He adores his wife and family. He loves America and we Americans. He is an honorable man. 🇺🇸
no he's not hes a poser & the people of Utah wised up to him..That's WHY HES RETIRING FROM POLITICS..
It's been a pleasure to see him act as a beacon in the midst of the storm of insanity that's become the Republican party since then.
Can I ask, what is it in your opinion that makes the republican party so insane right now?
@@matthewwalton4133 Is that a joke? As a small and personal anecdote: Some of the smartest people I've ever known have been lifelong Republicans. They believed in small government and low taxes. Now these same people are completely disregarding logic and reason based on obvious lies and following a man whose knowledge of his own countries' government, the world at large, and general common sense could be generously described as pathetic. That’s a joke. Most people I know voted for trump because he’s not a corrupt career politician wanting to do insider trading legally etc. All politicians are rich through corruption.
People voted for trump like throwing a wrench into a machine of gears hoping something breaks. Democrats wanted to shut down the west for instance and trump supported the economic use of public lands.
Mitt Romney a Mormon really doesn’t care. He’s fine with destroying most of utahs economy outside of big cities.
Trump supports being government but wake up! Each party doubles the deficit every eight years basically. I will say trump helped point out the issue with China. Chinas not a problem. The problem is the monetary system promotes rich people and offshoring jobs and hollowing out the e US. The military wrote a paper saying they’re reliant on China for inputs to fight China. Listen to luke gromen. The issue is the monetary system and inflation and ever bigger deficits or debt to promote credit creation so we can avoid a Great Depression if credit contraction happens. Which today we’ve had massive credit contraction just like the end of 1920s. I used to think politics controlled the economy. Obviously Biden being against oil makes sense why Saudi Arabia is being better friends with China. But the bigger economic problems seems like the president can’t really control those just try to postpone it.
