I am wondering why lens reviewers never try to shoot handheld video during review. Non-native lenses work not as good with active stabilization as native. And camera resolution also matters, if you have 24+ mpix sensor you can use prime in aps-c mode, if 12 mpix then use zoom.
Wow what an incredible video. I follow and watch a number of RUclipsrs and this is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen. Well done and thank you Jason
Great comparison! I'm however stuck between the Sigma 17mm and the Samyang 18mm. For video, which lens performs better in low light with less hunting and keeping focus? Do you think the MFD in favor of the Sigma 17mm gives it a much better chance of keeping things in focus while vlogging in low light?
You did an unbelievable good job here - thanks so much! Helps me out a lot because I'm looking for a wider option for my E1 right now. So - your video is pure gold ... Thank you!
Great video really enjoyed it. What do you think of the Sony 16-25 f2.8 G for vlogging with the ZV-E1 in dynamic stab? It’s newer and a bit more expensive but lighter than say the Viltrox.
Awesome! Thank you for watching Brandon and the very kind words :) Short form I have had no issues with the ZV-E1, but longer form I would be worried about overheating for sure... All the best, Jay
Amazing coverage and analysis. I just have one question (rather a dilemma) - would you suggest a Sony 11mm/1.8 or a Sony 20mm/1.8G on a Sony APSC (a6700) for casual landscaping, low light/night street/astro photography. I dont do vlogs so really not bothered about that at all. thanks!
I would go with the 11mm f/1.8 lens for the a6700 👍 Unless you plan on going full frame in the future or if you have other cameras, then it might make more sense to invest in full frame glass, but otherwise I would stick with APS-C lenses for the ofter much lower cost, smaller size, and less weight...
That will certainly work. If you can only get one lens I would go for the 16-35mm for the versatility. I do prefer the faster f/1.8 aperture on the 20mm for vlogging type stuff, but you might need more than 20mm at times.... The kit lens will also work if you have that as well.
Good call Tom, I have not used that lens and I thought it was a bit expensive for a Samyang option personally, but until I try it I clearly don't know how good it is... The latest few new Viltrox lenses are awesome for example, so it's totally possible that Samyang is also really good, but I need to look into it before recommending...
@@TomScryleus No I have not used the Tamron lens yet, but I did test the new Sony 20-70mm f/4 lens geni.us/eDAL5 last weekend and it is incredible, although a slower f/4.... The Tamron appears to be an excellent option though for sure!
Such an informative video! How far were you from the lens filming this? I'm stuck between a 16 mm and a 23-24 mm lens, I'd be about 2 feet away from the camera and need more of a head shot (neck up). Do you have any advice?
thank you for responding! it’s a APS-C camera (Sony ZVE-10 to be exact). I’d be okay with using stabilization to crop in during filming or even while editing.
I was using a full frame camera in this video, so the distance to camera was about 3 feet. For a crop factor camera at only 2 feet away, I think around 16-20mm would be needed...
I did watch your other video like 5 times through!! it was so helpful. and okay I will look more into that range 😊 i was looking into the sony 15 mm lens but i feel like it’s a little too wide, i don’t want distortion of the face for being so close.
Sony A7C and yeah it was mostly the focus breathing I think because I was rocking towards and away from the camera... It very rarely loses my face though, but every once and a while it does usually because of my hands I think.. I did have facial recognition on also, just to let you know...
I just recently got Sony FE PZ 16-35mm f/4 Lens and had no idea about its big brother gmaster.. do u think I should return it to get the gmaster? thanks for the video
Well that depends on your needs? If size, weight, and cost are of no concern and you want the faster f/2.8 aperture then absolutely the GM geni.us/1mz45 would be a better option.
Nice video! Do you think Dynamic Stabilisation work better on Sony lenses than Sigma lenses? Also I am planning to buy either Sigma 17mm F4 or Sony 16-35 PZ with ZV-E1 for family trip, video focus, no gamble, which one you are more recommend? :)
Hey Jason - like what you’re doing! Got the 20m Sony prime to go with the ZV-E1. Also got the PGYTech backpack because of you! But… need some help. Noticed pretty crummy focus pulling. The 20m is not stable. The kit lens didn’t have this problem. Settings? How can I make this problem go away? Thanks for your help.
Focusing pulsing is very annoying and I honestly don't no what causes it. I have seen it happen to me only a few times over the years and it appears to be when it looses facial tracking or something like that. If possible in those scenarios I would change the focus area to a smaller area to see if that helps. Worst case you switch the camera to manual focus or stop down the lens to like f/4 for example to see if that helps also. You can also try changing the focus sensitivity a bit more towards locked on as apposed to responsive...
I keep flipping between an a7c with 20mm 1.8 and the zv-e1 but I’d struggle to budget anything more than the kit lens which I think isn’t wide or fast enough, I will be making outdoor/camping videos, any thoughts?
Tuff call for sure.... The ZV-E1 takes better video with the lower resolution sensor and 10-bit 4.2.2. color.... Viltrox makes a t 20mm f/2.8 lens for $158 which I just reviewed and for the money its good and sounds perfect for your needs. See here: ruclips.net/video/ExpAzgpqksE/видео.html
@@Jason_Hermann thanks, unfortunately the viltrox isn’t that readily available here, did you ever figure out the issues you had with the Tamron 20mm? I like the fact that’s weather sealed over the Samyang 18mm.

I was originally just going to stick with prime lenses, but I figured I would show the versatility of the 16-35mm since I own it... Thanks again for sharing, Jay
Not wide angle enough in my opinion, so I stopped at 20mm for the prime lenses for this video. Zooms do go beyond 20mm though.... It is a great lens for sure, but I would not consider it a good option for vlogging with the ZV-E1 which is what this video has in mind... All the best, Jay
@Jason_Hermann oh I understand thank you for explaining that Would you rather pair ZV-E1 with Sigma 17mm f4 or the new Viltrox 20mm f2.8? I'm looking for a compact carry-everywhere on-the-go vlogging setup and already have tamron 17-28mm and sigma 28-70mm So I'm looking for the smallet lens for vlogging
@@Jason_Hermann In the future you should throw in the Sony 11mm F1.8 and Samyang/Rokinon 12mm F2 in the test for super wide looks even with the Dynamic Stabilization on. They'll also be super lightweight. That would be the the only video that covered this topic fully. This video is 1 of the best for for full frame wide angle lenses as is though. Thanks for the upload.
@@v3zMedia I appreciate the kind words and suggestions, but I didn't want to include aps-c lenses in this video since it was for full frame coverage. I do agree though if using the camera in crop mode those are great options for sure 👊
@@Jason_Hermann To stay in full frame mode and keep as much quality as possible many of us are using the 1.2x Clear Image Zoom Technique. It's pretty cool what you can pull off with these Sony bodies. You're right, the A7iv specifically need these crop wide angle lens to fight against that dramatic 1.5x crop you get with 4k60p footage.
Can you help me 🙏 if you don't mind 🙏 please I want to buy new camera so which one are best from these: 1). Samsung BX250F 2).sony cyber shot WX300 3).sony RX 100
I may have missed you mentioning it, but Active and/or Dynamic Stabilization only works with Sony lenses (beside breathing comp). Also, you want to consider the 11 or 15mm Sony APSC lenses.
This is a full frame camera, so when using the 11mm of 15mm APS-C crop factor lenses the Dynamic Active Stabilization crop will help with that, but you will still have some noticeable vignetting I would imagine? Also, the dynamic active worked with all the lenses I tested in this video just to be clear.
@@Jason_Hermann Question for you. 12 MP is 12 million pixels right? 4K is only 8mp pixels right? In video, 12MP is more than what's needed. So even with a crop wouldn't there be pixels to spare since ZV-E1 is down-sampled for video? Thanks for clarifying for me.
Both lenses are great options, but the 11mm has a much faster f/1.8 aperture which will give you more separation from the background compared to f/4. The zoom lenses are more versatile though and offer the power zoom feature which is also awesome! Hard to say which is best, but I would go with the 11mm for vlogging while talking to the camera... If you plan on turning the camera around to show off stuff when talking then the 10-20mm powerzoom might be a better way to go.
Well that is for crop factor cameras, but yeah it will work above 15mm @ f/4 which makes it a good lighter weight, more affordable option for some. Thanks for sharing, Jay
@@Jason_Hermannby using this lens with the ZV E1, the lens has to be between 12-13mm with DAS on to avoid any vignetting. This gives the widest possible view currently available. And lightest in the same time. The 11mm Sony prime will show vignetting so you have to take care of that in the post.
Great points, but I only wanted lenses that are fully compatible on the list encase people want to use a gimbal with no digital stab cropping like the footage I illustrated towards the end of this video using the 16-35mm lens...
@Jason_Hermann oh I understand thank you for explaining that
Would you rather pair ZV-E1 with Sigma 17mm f4 or the new Viltrox 20mm f2.8?
I'm looking for a compact carry-everywhere on-the-go vlogging setup and already have tamron 17-28mm and sigma 28-70mm
So I'm looking for the smallet lens for vlogging
Hi, in terms of sharpness and colors for photos and videos, which one do you think is better? The Sony 7Cii or the Sony ZVE1?
Hello, The Sony A7CII would be the best option for both photo and video in my opinion.
You gotta add the A7cii and A7cr to the title now 😂
ahh, you are correct! haha
Can you help me 🙏 if you don't mind 🙏 please I want to buy new camera so which one are best from these:
1). Samsung BX250F
2).sony cyber shot WX300
3).sony RX 100
Sir I have one large dobut, in the sony Alpha mark ii camera, how can i set (fps ) for slow-motion video shooting
The Sony A7 II does not offer 120p video footage....
I may have missed you mentioning it, but Active and/or Dynamic Stabilization only works with Sony lenses (beside breathing comp). Also, you want to consider the 11 or 15mm Sony APSC lenses.
That's not true. I'm using a few Tamrons with DAS, they work.
@@Jason_Hermann Doesn't zv-e1 have apc mode? I have this camera, and it has a mode to use any and all APC E mount lenses.
@@dmvfilms Yes, but the megapixel is not high enough to maintain 4k video in crop factor mode....
@@Jason_Hermann Question for you.
12 MP is 12 million pixels right?
4K is only 8mp pixels right?
In video, 12MP is more than what's needed.
So even with a crop wouldn't there be pixels to spare since ZV-E1 is down-sampled for video? Thanks for clarifying for me.
zve10 best lens between this two E PZ 10-20 mm F4 G
SELP1020G vs E 11-mm F1.8
SEL11F18 need to know for vlogging in wide angle
Both lenses are great options, but the 11mm has a much faster f/1.8 aperture which will give you more separation from the background compared to f/4. The zoom lenses are more versatile though and offer the power zoom feature which is also awesome! Hard to say which is best, but I would go with the 11mm for vlogging while talking to the camera... If you plan on turning the camera around to show off stuff when talking then the 10-20mm powerzoom might be a better way to go.
@@Jason_Hermann I am having kit 16-50 which is best to buy e11mm f1.8 for vlog
Tamron.
Sony FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS:
Zeiss.
"Hardcore Cinematography" with autofocus? 😅 Idk about that.
Sony 10-18mm is not on the list.
That's the best wide angle for vlogging.
The 10-18mm is like a hackers trick which is fantastic if you own the lens and are aware of the limitations, but for a new user it's hard for me to recommend due to the limitations. I will add it to the list with a "limited" warning... Thanks again for the sharing all the info... Jay
By the time you account for FE vs E, 10-18mm is really only a 15-27mm Full Frame
