  • Its late in the day, but the conditions are perfect for some more COLD, WET AND WINDY WINTER DARTMOOR WILD CAMPING!
    Managing to pack all my Winter gear into my 35/45 Litre Lowe Apline backpack, I set up to West Mill Tor and pitched up my MSR Freelite 2 tent, ready to give it its first real wild camp test in some heavy wind and rain. Get ready for a long night on a cold, windy tor, a closer look at how I set up my tent, a look through what's in my winter backpack, and the obligatory Dartmoor Legend!
    And I'm out again in the MSR Freelite tent, which even second hand was more money than I had so far spent on a tent. But is it worth the extra money?

    In 500 years in cold and stormy nights or in nights with rain and thunder you may see a pale figure tirelessly roaming dartmoor! Wandering from tor to tor setting up a tent for a while, making a brew and then packing his rucksack and get on the way again!
    And if you come to close to this restless soul you can hear a whisper in the wind .... "Hi,Trevor here! Summit or nothing! Today with my new tent!" 😵

      No, I think you're right. The weather is unpredictable and even more so on Dartmoor due to exposure and altitude. I tend to check met office as they do cover a few of the tors and generally in the ball park, besides I think they tend to be who supply the other apps information 🤔

      @@SummitOrNothing partly due to your reviews I own a Cloud Up 2 with snow skirts, I've been wild camping now for 7 months in Scotland's Highlands, a brilliant tent for the money, I use it in all conditions wind rain and snow, it's done me proud, in the Cairngorms at present where it's been cold at times so I just cover the inner netting with light weight plastic sheet (half a dust sheet from Poundland :) leaving the front a rear netting free for ventilation works great and I've kept warm well below zero camping on a few feet of snow. Thanks so much for your video's, love your honest reviews and down to earth style, filming even when things don't go quite right it shows part of the fun is in the learning and that wild camping is available to all no matter your budget. Cheers 😁

    You don't need a garmin to tell you when sunset is when you are out and about if you can see the sun. Just use your fingers. 15 mins per finger.

    • @SummitOrNothing
      @SummitOrNothing  2 года назад

      Great tip, cheers Graeme, but you'd be surprised how often I refer to the garmin for sunset and sunrise times ahead of time, handy having it on your wrist throughout the day, gives you an idea of what time you're have to aim for when hiking etc

    For the ruling price of the jacket it better provide ducking warmth same with the tent.

    • @SummitOrNothing
      @SummitOrNothing  2 года назад

      The jacket is a great insulative layer - but not a bad price, about a third of the price of Rab and North Face jackets. The tent was fairly toasty - but then it could have been my sleeping system.

      The same reason that I wasn't wearing the down jacket on the way up, it was packed. Must admit, it was was bit misty, but as soon as I started to pack up the tent, the heavens opened. Was a mad dash to get it packed away and yea, I was soaked to my underwear 🤦‍♂️
