- Here are some helpful tips for beginner backpackers and thru-hikers planning their travels through the Colorado Trail backcountry via the Collegiate West rather than Collegiate East. Enjoy and be safe!
Best advice for Segment CW1 is to access it from the Willis Gulch TH 1 mile west of Twin Lakes. Saves that God awful trek around the lake! The trail intersects the CW1 segment around MP 4.
Oh man! This might be the best tip I've learned about the trail so far. That walk around the lake can be great if you do it early early early or late late late, but I also love the idea of getting an early start up Hope Pass. Thanks, Lebowski!
I’m so glad you decided to do a guide for the Collegiate West! That is the route I’m planning on doing. These videos are so helpful....(and are helping me sort out the planning etc.) Cheers!
You won't regret the decision to go CW! I can't wait to hear about your adventure and all your plans as you get ready for it!
Cheapest Best Gear for us on the CT: For Miller, Frogg Toggs. We don't use rain gear all that often in Colorado, so it was a great lightweight find for those occasional afternoon showers, not to mention seriously cheaper than the other popular brands. For Debbie, Cascade Mountain Tech carbon hiking poles, $30 at Costco vs the other guys at $300. They held up great too, she used them all day everyday and they were very lightweight.
These are great additions to the list of things where cheaper is actually better or at least as good. I LOVE my Frogg Toggs setup, and if it ever gets torn I can buy a new one for 15 bucks. Details and I were just talking today about how so much of the best gear is often middle-budget, too. Thanks, MAD!
Absolutely love the videos brother! I set off on trail the 5th of July this year. I will be going Denver to Durango. I truly believe your video breakdowns are some of the best on the internet. Love the info and the sense of humor. Keep up the great work. Lol I always feel I’m behind your giveaways!
Thanks, Austin! I really, really appreciate the kind words. Your name is in on the next drawing for the double-walled camping wine glasses, and if you hit me up with your address I can get a sticker in the mail to you first thing Monday morning!
I AM STOKED YOU MADE THIS VID!!!!!!! "treat yo self"..... (huge parks and rec. fan BTW). great info, great tips, you should hold off a couple weeks and head out with Toejam and me... lol
Absolutely! I wish I could go later this year, but that pesky 'work' thing, haha! Maybe we can coordinate a beer somewhere during a town day for you guys in the middle when I make my trek back to Georgia!
Very useful beta; thanks for taking the time to make these planning videos! Someday, hope to get down there and hike a section or two of the CT.
Thank you, SBA! Looking forward to seeing more of your adventures soon!
Good running into you on CW 2 . Love that section!
- Slow Motion
It was great to meet you, Slow Motion! That climb up to Cottonwood was gnarly, right??
@@OutsideComfortZone yep, it kept going. I ended up making camp by the lake up top due to time and storm, hitched to BVista in the AM.
Thanks SnackBox. Not super unique, but the Toaks 750ml is cheap, and used by many a thru-hiker. To me, it’s the best pot AND super affordable. Nice when this type of thing happens in life 😊
I love that Toaks pot! Great addition and thank you Balsam Bill!
Perfect detail so no need to shorten (actually like to see clips of the trail on each section you cover) and will be rewatching later in the year prior to setting foot at the TH in Waterton!
Thank you, Melanie! I am getting so excited about my hike and everyone else's, and I can't wait to see how yours unfolds!
@@OutsideComfortZone Realistically, I will only have time this summer for Waterton to Breckenridge! Too many other family and other backpacking commitments. But section by section, Ill get the whole lot done at some point and that's all that matters to me since getting mileage on other trails too!
@@melaniegarden3416 That sounds like a great balance between the CT and other commitments. I did my first pass of the CT in three separate segment hikes, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Happy hiking!
Re watching and making notes...man you speak fast!!! And I am told I speak fast!
Love the video, but a bit too short on description. Please don't rush the process.
Thanks, Joseph 🙌🏼
so if we get into twin lake in the morning- is it realistic to make it to avalanche meadow that day? that's where we wanted to camp so we can tackle Hope Pass first thing in the morning.
Yep! I think that’s super doable if you start the trek in the morning. Can’t wait to hear how your trip goes!
For a useful and cheap piece of gear, my $5 collapsible umbrella proved itself over and over. Rain, sun, and wind protection all in one.
I doubted the umbrellas until last year in Segment Two. I think I will have one for that segment at the very least if not the entire hike. I'm getting amped with every day.
I’m actually thinking about spending my time before we start doing some trail magic around the dry strech past section 20.... still thinking about locale so I might run into ya...
That's a killer good plan. You could likely do some water trail magic on Segment 2 as well since 20 might still be pretty far down the trail for many hikers, but regardless trail magic is one of my favorite ways to spend time outdoors.
Appreciate the videos! Not sure why you feel they need to be shorter :)
Thank you, Leslie! I am glad you're finding them helpful! More soon, promise!
Hopefully hitting this segment around July 16 or 17. Best value BRS stove, $17 on Amazon and under 1oz!
That's a really great tip! I picked up a AOTU stove last summer, and I think I might grab a BRS stove to compare. Thanks, Larry!
Cascade Carbon Trekking Poles are $15 a pop and nearly as good as once’s that are 20X that price.
Awesome tip, thank you!
Despite CW having spectacular views, I plan to go East for the lower altitude.
I think this is a totally perfect plan. The East is the original route, so I think everyone needs to do it at least once!
Lower altitude BUT almost the dame elevation change. Yale Ridge on a hot day rivaled CW.
@@lebowski5192 For those of us that struggle breathing at high altitudes, it's not the elevation change.
@@M2Abi I understand that! A lot of people go east because they think its easier. Not true at all. But you may breathe a bit easier! Good luck and have fun.
